Caution - Iffy Upconversion

What's great about it: Plays almost anything you throw at it
What's not so great: Does not play HD DivX files
"Bought this DVD player specifically because it upconverted and plays DivX files. Well... sorta.
Yes, it plays DivX files, but only those that were encoded at 720x480 resolution, which is standard DVD resolution. I happen to record HDTV through my computer off cable. I can encode 1280x720 DivX files (high definition 720P quality). These files play OK on my computer and burn OK to a DVD disk. However, this DVD player will not play them, instead, gives me a message, "resolution not supported."
So, not really what I was looking for."

What's great about it: Does what it says
What's not so great: N/A considering the price on this item
"First of all the box lists all accessories included and specifically indicates no HDMI cable included which other dvd players do not provide as well. Second, the PS3 does do upconvert on all DVD's to 1080p - Make sure you download the latest software update from PS3
In any case I bought and set this up for my parents and and its great. Well worth the price."

What's great about it: Cheap/looks nice
What's not so great: Poorly made/Doesn't state you need different cables
"I got this dvd player since I've seen that mostly everyone was happy with this dvd player. I cannot say that I am. I have a 42" 1080p flat panel, and I also have a playstation 3. PS3 does not upconvert regular dvds. Anyways, my point is, in order to get progressive scan, I need to connect component cables as well as my HDMI? I thought HDMI was for Hi Def? I think its a scam that they make you buy all these extra cables to get the picture it says it is capable of giving. I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone. The startup menu is very cheap looking, and is somewhat hard to navagate, and I am usually pretty good with electronics. It just looks like poor quality. I think I will return this DVD player and go get me a high end Sony dvd player instead."

What's great about it: Good looks and great picture quality
What's not so great: None
"When i first started looking for an upconverting dvd player i was stuck between this and the Sony model for the similar price. I ended up picking this one because i think it looks a little better. After popping a dvd into the player, i noticed a noticeably better picture from just a regular dvd player. The image is definitely sharper and clear. I believe it is definitely a good alternative to Blu-ray and HD dvd players because of the price and uncertainty of the HD war. The only thing i would say is that you need an HDMI cable to get 720p and above since component cables only produce up to 480p because of some conflicting barriers with all the upconverting dvd players."

What's great about it: Upconversion, All Formats playable
What's not so great: None
"Phillips does it again with this one! Not only will it play anything you put in there - PAL, NTSC, All Regions, MP3, DVD-Audio, Kodak, DivX, etc... but the 1080 upconversion is flawless! It even makes animated DVD look better on my brand new 56" Samsung DLP!"

What's great about it: 1080P upscaling and Multi region support
"The rumor that the new Philips DVP5960 has corrected the bugs that plagued the Philips DVP5900 upscaling DVD player appears to be true! Very clear picture on 46 inch LCD TV. Able to play multi region DVDs with out having any problem. I am very happy with this product performance and price range."

What's great about it: Upconvert
What's not so great: Pic adj menu makes it hard to see changes unless you exit
"This replaced a standard Philips DVD Player in the bedroom. Bought it to go along with my new 32" Panasonic LCD TV. It does it's job, providing an excellent pic. Menu options to adjust the video and audio are included at a value price!"

"it looks really nice and the price isnt half bad. but the usb prot wont read half the drives you try. the picture quality is not as good as a 100 dollar dvd player. the remote is very cheap and small. But it is quiet, the usb is nice when the pics work. And its very thin."

What's great about it: HDMI and USB support
What's not so great: Limited USB features
"This DVD player gets the job done at a low cost. Once agian Phillps as made a decent product. I use a 480i TV using RGB cables and you can still tell the difference in the picture from an average DVD player. HDMI support for a non hddvd player is hard to find at a low cost. Not all things work with the USB port obviously, but the big shocker was the lack of ntfs support, which is a very common external harddrive format. This is what your looking for if your a dvd person who likes good picture, but if you want good harddrive support, look for another model. -kris"

What's great about it: Slim DVD player
What's not so great: None as of 10/09/2007
"Hello, This Phillips DVD player is slim in addition condensed with a tight fitting disc slot; these similarities are huge features in choosing new products. Note down this DVD video player coordinates adequately with HD TV presenting brilliant DVD video and CD sound without comparison in my 40 plus years enjoying TV and music. The Best Buy agent coordinated Phillips DVD video player after listening to my detailed features I wanted within my finances."

Big Features, Small Price

What's great about it: Inexpensive, HDMI, USB port for External Storage
What's not so great: Cannot run mutliple audio out...HDMI overrides other audio so can not split HDMI to TV while audio to receiver.
"I am actually very impressed with this player thus far. One great feature is the USB out which I have an external 320GB drive hooked to, and can now run a cheap media server through my TV or stereo system. I can also run my pictures from there as well. Picture quality is excellent...but requires some tinkering with the settings to make just right. Good remote...simple. For the money spent it is really hard to complain about this player...even the physical design is sleek and appealing. Under $70 you really can't go wrong!"

Nice product

What's great about it: DIVX certified
What's not so great: will not play NTFS formatted drives
"This will play every format that I found except mkv, which can only be played on a computer. It played every form of media from DVD R/RW + or - as well as CD and CDR/RW and plays from a USB 2 flash drive or hard drive formatted fat 32. However, it will not play NTFS formatted drive. Upscaling the few movies that I tried did not seem to change the picture quality, but the quality was nice. I may by another."

What's great about it: Great Picture
What's not so great: Set up menu is kind of weird
"Great product. The picture looks great with HDMI and Component hook ups. Regular dvd's look very good. The set up menu is a little funky but you get used to it after a while, but for the price you can't beat it."
