Best but for one thing

"Bought this product exclusively for the USB, DivX and HDMI. HDMI & DivX are excellent. However on the USB, it accepts flash drives/pen drives that have been formatted in FAT or FAT 32, and does not recognize NTFS Format. Typically if you want to add an external drive greater than 32 GB, the dvd player will not recognize it. The alternative is to use a 1-4 gb pen drive."

"I've owned this DVD player for 3 weeks. It has an excellent picture when attached to my 61" LDP at 1080i. There are a few weaknesses however: The remote control is difficult to use and needs to be pointed directly at the DVD player; The on-screen menus are difficult to maneuver; The unit takes too long to boot up; and the biggest problem is setting up the audio. I haven't been able to get a Dolby Digital or DTS signal to the A/V receiver I can only get PCM."

"The 1080p upscaling feature works great on this player, it makes all of my standard def dvd's look much sharper on my lcd television. This player has also done an awesome job of playing back any kind of media I throw in it. Highly Recommended"

"The unit has a nice, sleek black finish to it. I have it hooked up to a 42 inch Toshiba LCD and the upconverted picture quality is pretty good. The unit does have a few drawbacks however. The included remote control has a very cheap feel to it, but I use a universal remote anyway so that wasn't too much of a problem for me. The on-screen menus seem poorly designed. And on a whole, the player is a bit sluggish in terms of booting up, ejecting discs, and navigating menus. However, for only $60, I would definitely recommend it to tide HDTV owners over until the format war between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD comes to a conclusion."

"This is a pretty decent DVD player. It "up-converts" regular DVDs to 1080p resolution, and for the most part they look spectacular. The best part about this system is the ease of use. Seriously, if you can't learn to work this DVD player, you will have trouble with all others."

"I own this DVD player few months ago. The player is very good and price is excellent. I got everything what I expect from a very good DVD player. I can play photos or videos by just plugging jupm drive as it has usb cable port. The most usable part of the system is that, I can play a movie from the same point after put it off for few ays, which is just excellent.I highle recommend this products to buy."

Works as advertised

"I purchased this model at Best Buy a few months ago. It has played all my burned DVDs fine. DVD-R/DVD+R/DVD+R D/L... all play without a hitch. One of the great features is the USB port. It has had no problems playing DiVX and XViD movies right off my USB thumbdrives! I can definitely notice the difference in quality using the upconversion setting on my HDTV. I like the fact it has HDMI out to plug into the TV. Remember it will only upconvert if you are using HDMI to hook it up. My old Phillips DVP-642 only had componet out and although it still works fine it will not play the newer XViD codecs like this new model does."

"This little player is wonderful considering how much it costs. The strengths are: hdmi output, all region DVD, Dvix, xvid, upscale to 1080p, usb support, hdmi.
The weaknesses are: slow startup time, occasional HDMI initialization problem, can't play hd video files, slow photo rendering.
But those problems are not unusual in DVD players, and for this one, it's well worth of its 60 to 70 $."

"This is a great dvd player with upconvert for the price...bonus that it plays divx files! HDMI sound was bit difficult to configure at first, but once I did it was running sweet!
USB 2.0 is a big plus for reading pics and movies off of a stick, the vidoe can be a bit choppy but overall OK."

Interest feature about Remote Control

"I thought this would be interesting, on the remote that comes with the player, there is not a button for "HD Upconverting" - the first button on player itself to toggle from 480, 720 and 1080i. But if you have phillip's previous legendary model DVP642's remote, you will find the play button will pause and pause button will "UpConvert" for some strange reason. So I'm using mostly the old remote for my DVP5982. For those ones have letterbox problem, read the instruction to get a full screen on HDTV's 16:9 resolution"

poor setup

"This DVD player requires the user to adjust it's settings every time you play a DVD. While using an HDMI hookup the viewer will be unable to see and/or hear the signal from your DVD player if the DVD player is not setup correctly, which happens every time you turn the DVD player on. I would recommend spending the extra money on a Blu-ray player."

AMAZING UPCONVERSION

"I have now RETIRED 3 VCR's, 2 NON-progressive DVD players and 2 Progressive players that do not support DVD-RW. Will probably donate to charity. Anyway, The Philips DVP 5982/37 is a BARGAIN! I set it up using component cables and then using the HDMI output to my HDTV. What a difference! With HDMI you will experience VERY CLOSE to HD viewing. Beautiful picture on my DVD collection and greatly improved on my DVD-RW's recorded from 2 different HD recorders. A minor complaint is the remote-very small and you must aim directly at the unit for it to work. I recommend this player to anyone with a 1080i/1080b HDTV. You will not be dissapointed-you will be smiling!"

Best purchase I have made in a while

"I had my doubts at first, I mean an upconvert DVD player that plays DivX, has a USB port to play from flash media, and has DTS decoding??? And there are claims on the internet that this player can be "hacked" to be region free?? I took the chance, and I recommend you do too. It is VERY slim, and delivers all that it promises. The quality for the price is very impressive. Some notes that weren't as obvious to me before I made the purchase: To utilize the upconvert functionality you have to be using an HDMI cable. I was first using component video and couldn't get the upconvert to work. The remote is not so nice. It is very very small, and some functionality (upconvert) can not be activated by the remote. I plan on getting a Logitech universal remote, so this isn't a huge problem for me. The "hack" to make it region free is very easy. Don't let the word "hack" scare you. All you have to do is press a few buttons to access the preferences menu where you use the built in menus to change to another region, or region 0 (region free). It takes all of 30 seconds and it works like a champ. Just google and you can find the instructions; that's what I did. Overall, a very sound purchase. I recommend this to my friends."

Should seriously consider...

"This DVD player is awesome! It plays all of the movies that I own. Plays movies on all media formats... (i.e. DVD-R, DVD+R, et cetera). Also, if you have divx movies, it plays them in high resolution. The USB port is very nice feature. I've played my divx movies that I have transferred over from my computer to an external hard drive, my IPOD, and my thumbdrive.
The only catch is that all of the devices that you are considering to connect through the USB port must be FAT32 only."

Nice player for decent price

"Got this player las week to replace another broken DVD player. I was looking for an HDMI upconvert player with the ability to play DIVX. De player performs great for movies. Features to play MP3 music files are a bit limited. To this day I've not found the ability to play MP3 files randomly. The player is capable to play through a folder, using a "repeat" function. But the information on the screen is not updated to reflect the track list positioning."
