What's great about it: Picture quality
What's not so great: none so far
I purchased this upconvert player to go along with a 50" Insignia plasma TV. The pair works great together. There was no need to pay more for brand name prices. Also if you have an Insignia TV, the TV remote will also control the DVD player.

What's great about it: Good price point and features
What's not so great: Poor quality
I purchased two Insignia upconvert DVD players in a two week period. Initially, both units worked as expected. However, one of the units has gone on the fritz in the last week. Unfortunately, the unit is out of Warranty by two months. Now I have to purchase another player (definitely not a Insignia). Lesson learned....stay with the NAME BRAND products because the quality in not built into the "off brands".

What's great about it: good price
What's not so great: no hdmi cable included
purchased product just over 2 weeks ago. it worked well in the beginning but then began to not read discs and eventually stopped sending audio signal to display. good initial price but must include cost of hdmi cable in total purchase price. in addition, potential quality issues may warrant purchase of additional warranty. even with this added on, the total cost (dvd player, cable, warranty) makes this a potential good buy for a 2nd home dvd.

What's great about it: CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP
What's not so great: Won't upconvert copy protected DVD's!!
An upconvert that won't upconvert copy protected DVDs? What is that all about?
I hooked this up using component cables but this machine will only upconvert to 720/1080 using HDMI connections. The Component can opnly go to 480p on copyright protected dvds, but it will put out 1080i component out on un-protected DVD's...Are there any unprotected DVD's out there? I don't own many, if any at all, this is going back tomorrow, I demand a refund! DO NOT BUY THIS!

What's great about it: Nice Picture, Remote
What's not so great: Upconvertion
This is an great player overall. I watch movies and TV shows on it quite a bit and it has been a surprising well run workhorse. No issues with the player except it has a difficult upconverting the DVD's. I sometimes need to reload the disc several times to get the upconversion to take place. Other than that, it runs like a charm, great picture, easy to use remote, and excellent reliablity as well.

What's great about it: really cheap
What's not so great: picture was horrible
was originally going to hook this up using component cables but this dvd player will only upconvert to 720/1080 using the hdmi out. component is set at 480p on copyright protected dvds, but it will put out 1080i component out on UNcopyright protected dvds. even hooked up through hdmi the quality was horrible, dark sceens in movies look VERY pixelated. will be installing this in the kids room for elmo dvds.

What's great about it: cheapest HDMI upconvert
What's not so great: dvd drive door takes an eternity to open
I noticed my parents' JVC upconvert dvd player and remote looked kind of like my Insignia. I brought it over later that week, and behold: same remote, same hookups in the rear, same LCD "hello, open, close, off" display.. EXACTLY the same. It was a pleasant surprise until another thought: Is it a JVC rebadge or vice versa? Most likely not the same player, but definitely shared parts the same way Matsushita makes Panasonic/Quasar products that look alike utilizing same technology but entirely different build quality. And both seem to play various disc formats not possible on my Samsung and Sony. So I'm keeping the Insignia while waiting for Blu-ray to drop in price. This might be the best of the cheapo catagory.

What's great about it: A bit high in price
I just purchased this little gem, and I must say so far I am please. I purchased a more expensive dvd recorder and it doesn't playback -R/RW or +R/RW DL, this little baby does. I think its a little high in price but it is working just fine on my SDTV. Picture quality is great. Its worth buying if you're not into HD. My rating is more closer to a 3.5 star than 4 but it is better than a 3 star.

What's great about it: has HDMI output
What's not so great: Not all its cracked up to be!!!
I bought this thinking it would give me a slightly better quality picture than what im getting from my regular dvd player that I currently have hooked up thru component cables but I was wrong! This Upconvert dvd player which I hooked up to my hdtv thru hdmi cables gives me the exact same quality as what I was getting from my regular magnavox dvd/vcr combo player that im running thru monster coponent cables.... and yes, I did change the resolution to 1080i!!! It really isnt worth it in my opinion!!! Unless you just want to go a step up in quality from a dvd player hooked up thru av cables this player isnt worth it. Ill be packaging it back up and taking it back!!! Was going to wait for the format war to be over but might just suck it up and go w/ a HD-DVD Player!

What's great about it: A basic DVD player that does what it's suppose to
What's not so great: Highest HD resolution is only 1080i
For a basic DVD player this does the trick. It of course doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the newer DVD players, but if you're just needing to play DVDs, then this is all you need. Got this as a gift for a family member who is severely behind in technology and didn't want to scare them too bad and this was a perfect fit. Simple controls and decent picture quality and sound. These could of course be better if this family member had at least a digital TV, but remeber she's severely behind in technology and still has an old analog unit which required a video switch box just to hook it up. Would definitely recommend for any TV at the digital level and below, but if you have an HDTV, then you need to go ahead and get a full blown HD-DVD player and let the HD upconversion units be (HD upconversion units don't play HD-DVDs).

What's great about it: does what it supposed to
What's not so great: none so far
Bought this for use with 42in LG plasma. hooked it up through a hdmi cable and set resolution to 1080i and it worked great. Near hd picture. Dolby digital decoder and optical output a real plus. Easy to set up,easy to use. Can't see a reason not to purchase this player.

Does what it says it will do. Picture is good even on the basic set up.
In addition, the remote can be programmed into a universal "All-In One" brand. Just use the PVR setting.

What's great about it: Inexpensive, easy to use, good quality
What's not so great: Lacks high-end features
If you are looking for a good quality, inexpensive, easy to use up-converting DVD player, its hard to beat this one from Insignia. It is easy to use, has a great picture and audio and a very simple remote. Personally, I do not want an over featured, hard to use DVD player with a remote that has more buttons than my laptop. This one fits the bill. Enjoy.

What's great about it: 1080i with Component Cable- easy to switch resolutions
What's not so great: Although it was inexpensive, my wife is going to kill me!
I was looking for good upconverting DVD player for my HDTV. The only upcoverting DVD players I've found only did 1080i over HDMI. A while back, a BestBuy associate told me only the LG upconverting DVD player would do 1080i over Component. After reading some of the previous reviews, I learned that LG manufactures these. With that, I'd thought I'd give it a shot. Indeed, this DVD player WILL do 1080i over Component. This works out great because I have only one HDMI port on my HDTV. Now I don't have to worry about buying an expensive switcher. Keep in mind though, you will only get 490p with commercial DVD's. I couldn't be happier with this inexpensive purchase.

What's great about it: Unconvert, HDMI
What's not so great: remote lay out button are small, takes a moment to open bay.
Nice DVD player upconvert is noticeable unlike others that claim to upconvert. One button operation to upconvert. No need to go into system settings and go browsing for the upconvert setting. Plug and play HDMI unlike other systems you have to active port.
Layout of remote can be better. Insigna not supportted for my univeral remote. --Thinking about buying smart univeral remote now since other one not good for this DVD player--Maybe one of those Logitech smart ones is next--.
Wish the DVD door would open faster.

What's great about it: Price
What's not so great: light and flimsy DVD tray
I was expeecting a close to HD quality picture on my 1080i setting HDTV. I'm guessing that the upconvertion improves the picture but i couldnt really tell. I changed from 480 to 720 to 1080... Little difference.
I will say its alot better than playing off my PS2, And It fits ontop of my VCR perfect!!! Its so thin!
Only thing is the disk tray is very light and flimsy so be careful when loading and removing disks.

What's great about it: Excellent picture at a great price
What's not so great: Didn't notice much difference between 480P using component cables and 1080i using HDMI
This is excellent value for the money. Easy to hookup and excellent picture!!
I'm not sure if it's me or not but when I initially hooked it up, I used the cables that came with it because I had yet to get my HDMI cable which I ordered online for a fraction of the price you pay in retail stores. The picture at 480P is fantastic!
Then I got my HDMI cable and when I compare the upcoverted 1080i to the 480P I didn't notice much difference. It was slightly better. I'm not sure if it's because I have a smaller 19inch TV or what.
It's not much of a complaint but I figured that If I got an HDMI cable and viewed DVDs at 1080i it would have been a tremendous difference and I just couldn't see it.
Overall I would say go for it! You can't do much better for the price!
