What's great about it: Mic input, small, sleek, easy to handle
What's not so great: motor noise, no light, night vision,no mic boot
"I got this as a high school student who wants to expand my ideas from my head to video. Everything is great about this little camcorder except i would like a light and a mic boot. It's one of the only camcorders i can think of with a mic input, but it doesn't have a boot. I'm purchasing an $80 external mic for it, so we'll see how creative i get with tape. I actually want to make movies though, so using the cheap mic on the camcorder would be useless anyway. The boot thing just gets me with the insensibility of the manufacturer. I'm kind of OCD about how things look and go together, so it eats away at me. I think when i get the condenser shotgun mic for it though, it will be as good as any $400 miniDV camcorder, so I'm happy with that. Over all, it's a good camera, not a good camera and audio recorder. It'll hold me over until i can fork out $5000 for a real video camera or get picked up by a network."

Great Entey level camcorder

What's great about it: Mic input, Zoom, 1394
What's not so great: none
"This is a great entry level camcorder, it has a microphone input which completly eliminates the quiet motor noise. Add a BP-2L14 battery pack and an external microphone. Its a great entry level camcorder for home videos or an indy film maker. Five Stars. This is what mine looks like in the picture except that old camera is the ZR800."

What's great about it: Good battery life, Easy to handle, Quality Pictures
What's not so great: Extra H/W requirements to connect to PC
"I switched to miniDV after I found that DVD camcorders consumed battery easily. This budget model was good enough for my home videos. Be sure to check your computer model as some have firewire ports and some dont which might need you to buy extra H/W"

What's great about it: Small, lightwieght, low-priced
What's not so great: Motor noise heard during playback, feels Fischer-Price cheap
"I was happy to get a good deal and my wife was happy because it was "light" and easy for her small hands. I read a couple reviews afterword where people complained about motor noise. I thought how bad could it be...it's bad. Not only is it louder than my 5 year old Sony Hi8, but it sooo totally noticable during playback that it seriously ruins the moment. Especially if that moment is of a quiet sleeping infant or some other special moment that you don't want to hear a whiny motor... Can't wait to return this tonight. Also, I read that others just add a microphone...yeah I don't think so."

What's great about it: Pretty good film quality except for (see cons)
What's not so great: Low light filming is awful. motor noise.
"Well, i bought this camera 2 days ago, and after the christmas rush they did not have many good minidvs left. first thing i noticed that i did not like about the canon zr800 is the por low light film quality, it was just grainy and then when i wat to tun on the low light filming setting, it was choppy. Then i put the tape in and noticed a loud humming noise that was just frankly annoying. This camera is really for the perso who is lookking for a basic camera, its easy to use, and the overall pretty good. But if you are the person looking to buy a camera to make some pretty nice looking films (and not professional just acceptable) DO NOT BUY THIS. this is a very basic camera. that is that.
let me add that i might be returning this for a sony that i saw, its a little more pricy but after i have seen this i think it will be worth it."

What's great about it: Price, ease of use, quality
What's not so great: Lack of advanced features
"I bought this camera to take videos for family events and vacations. I thought the price would make it produce very low-quality videos but I was wrong! Under decent conditions it produces very good quality video.
It is easy to use and thought it for the price it delivered well. It could have better low-light capture and more advanced tweaking setting but this is a budget camera - not for someone looking to produce broadcast quality video. The battery could last longer, but I reviewed other camcorders in this class and they all have the same lasting time.
Get a firewire cable so you can connect it to your computer (its faster than USB), but you will need a firewire port.
For the money, you can not go wrong."

"We just bought this after our old camcorder broke and I must say we are pleased with this purchase. Basic model that it is really easy to use. With a 4 year old and a 7 month old we wanted a camcorder that we could just pick up and use without any hassle. This is it. Zoom is great and we really love how light and compact it is. This camcorder doesn't take still shots but we found that with our old camcorder, which did, we hardly used that feature because the quality was really poor."

Poor quality video

"Talk about poor quality video. Outside is ok, but inside is terrible. Colors are too bright (oranges and reds). Hard to see peoples faces with light in back. Seems like my old camera from the 80's. Dont buy!!!"
