When I bought the item I knew I was not getting high quality, but the one feature I needed was the ability to play CD-Rs that I had made. The description states it plays CDs, CD-Rs and CD-RWs. The ones I tried to play worked in every other device up to this point, but none would work with this player. Retails CDs I bought worked fine so the device was working, but not as I needed it to. A total disappointment.
What's great about it: The price
What's not so great: Does not play CD-Rs

We use this in the car only to play books on cd. We were able to use it two times and this last trip it wouldn't play - at all. Wouldn't even turn on. Used both car power source and brand new batteries. It's only twenty bucks for reason I guess. Though any more, it doesn't seem to matter the amount, just it came from China (Taiwan, etc.), it will break or not work for long.
What's great about it: It sounded great the two times it played.
What's not so great: Didn't hold up at all.

I recently bought a similar product from another manufacturer at a different large retailer and it never worked right. I was hesitant to try again, but I am pleased to report that this cd player has worked like a charm everytime I've turned it on. The sound is good.
My only complaint is that the headphones are not adjustable. They were too small for my head and did not reach my ears. Luckily I had others that I can plug in and use.
What's great about it: Good price, good sound
What's not so great: Headphones

Like so many other portable CD players these days this one had a short lifespan - maybe hitting a record - one week before it started squealing like a banshee! That first week of sound wasn't bad for listening to books on CD (what I use mine for) but musc sound was gritty.
Also the accompanying earphone wire came loose within hours giving me a psychedelic back-and-forth sound experience from that point on.
Disappointed yet again!
What's great about it: It's round.
What's not so great: Everything else.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

This twenty dollar baby really rocks!
I bought this at Best Buy only a few days after another player (a name brand) just didn't cut it. I use it mostly when I'm running, so my first test was, hop on the treadmill at the gym and see if the player skips. Nope, not a bar of music lost. It also became immediately apparent that the quality of the sound was impressive; I used Sennheiser PMX80 behind the ear sport phones and the music was sweet.
Then I got the player home, and hooked it up through the "Line Out" jack to my sound system; a very good feature I might add.. "Hah," I thought, "this will turn the sound from the Insignia to dust." NOPE! Even through my high-end system, it sounded great. Admittedly, a bit less in bass than my component cd player, but not enough to justify the some $480 difference in price! Still totally impressed.
Final test: play it through a set of the studio quality cans I have. Again, totally impressed by the excellent sound quality.
Oh, by the way, the CD I played for all my tests had many complex passages. Insignia handled them extremely well.
So, bottom line....If you need a new new portable CD player, and have an extra twenty some-odd bucks kickin' around, I can't see how you could do any better than this one.
What's great about it: Ease of use, quality of sound, "Line Out" jack, price.
What's not so great: Nothing.

Got this for my 9 year old son. It is his third portable cd player. His other two were for children and this is more generic. He loves it and listens to his audio cds lots.
What's great about it: light, inconspicous colour, works

I purchased this CD player after buying 2 others that didn't work (not from Bestbuy). This player is better quality and does not "conk out" like the others, which just stopped working. The others were burning batteries like crazy ... this CD player appears to work especially well when using Duracell copper top batteries. The sound quality is excellent (I use other headphones that are better than the ones with the set). The player has a better "grounding" than the others & won't usually skip unless the batteries are low.
What's great about it: It's still working after a couple of weeks!
What's not so great: It periodically skips & turns off

I enjoy listening to audio books on my player. Every unit I've had in the past (not Insignia) allowed me to stop and when I restarted I was back at the point where I had stopped.
The Insignia unit I received takes me back to the beginning of the CD so I have to fast forward to where I ended (assuming I recall where I was).Very annoying (especially if I haven't listened to this CD for a couple of days)
I purchased this because the price was so attractive and did not expect such a problem.
I stopped in another Best Buy store today and was told they had never heard of this problem with the Insignia unit in the past . i'm hoping it is just this unit and will attempted to exchange it for one without this problem. Otherwise I will return to a SONY unit
What's great about it: Good Sound and price
What's not so great: Not good for audio books

I got this little cd player to play on my commute on the bus, and to listen to audio books at work, since the rentals don't allow computer play without downloading extra stuff. It did not skip on my bumpy bus ride which was my big concern. Sound is surprisingly good.I'll want to stay on top of recharging my batteries, though, unless I find a good AC adapter.
What's great about it: price, good sound
What's not so great: no AC cord included, dependent on battery

This product works great. The only problem is that a power cord is not included. You must buy the cord separately. (Jensen 1700 universal power cord) As long as you follow the directions for the power cord properly, the power cord will provide endless power. This power cord will save you the trouble of continually buying batteries.
What's great about it: works great, sounds excellent
What's not so great: does not include power cord which must be purchased separately
