What's great about it: Sound quality
What's not so great: ..None

"I've had this for about a yr now, and it's been great for me! I seriously think some of the negative reviewers may not fully understand how to set this up, IDK? I have to turn the sub down from 10 to 2, and the bass down from 6 to 2 because it is too much for my apartment.. espc. movies. I prefer Multi Stereo mode vs 5.1, and all speakers sound very crisp. I bought some speaker stands from Walmart, 25.00/nice, and love my set up. My father has a far more expensive Samsung unit w/ DVD player built in, and this has more options to shape the sound + sounds better. You can't go wrong, just take the time to really learn how to set it up. I pd 200 at BB a yr ago, so price went down."

Good sound system   08/23/2008
By cavyracer711 from Akron, OH

What's great about it: Nice clear sound, lotsa power, cheap
What's not so great: small speakers hard to mount, wish the base hit a little harder.

"After getting an hdtv, it just wasnt right to not get surround sound. so being tight on money after paying for a 50'' tv, i went with this cheap system. After hooking it up i could immediately tell a difference. The sound is clearer, and it puts you in the moment. Wether its games, movies, or music, everything sounds a lot better. I just wish the base hit a little harder."

Amazing quality and value.   04/01/2008
By JRockDetroit from Detroit

What's great about it: Cost. Simpilicity. Quality product from a known brand.
What's not so great: Inputs. Individual speakers are hard wired (No jack on speaker)

"I purchased this system before the holidays but wanted to wait a little while to write a review. I am a huge supporter of Sony Home Theater equipment as I have never been let down. I picked this system up (as opposed to a dvd-included package) because I already had a silver Sony DVD player. I could not have made a better choice.
I currently have my Sony DVD hooked up to the digital coaxial input, my 360 hooked up to the optical, and my PC hooked up to the stereo composite via a Creative Soundblaster external sound card. Every device sounds amazing through this receiver. I was truly surprised as to how well my computer sounds actually. I love that the included AV remote works for my DVD player as well. Programming of the inputs is an awesome addition and I cannot believe the quality of the product for the price.
To sum it up, this "strictly audio" system is great. A few years ago, this would have sold for $400. Could not be more pleased!
Also, for anyone without a dvd player (who is that?) or someone looking to upgrade on the cheap, I highly suggest one of the models with the built in DVD player and HDMI input. I hear from a buddy that his system is just as amazing for about a hundred bucks more. Sony is the way to go for a quality, affordable system."

Unbeatable for the Price!!!   03/31/2008
By g00fy from Mahwah, NJ

What's great about it: Autocalibrate, High Sound Quality, Pretty Loud
What's not so great: No speaker stands, but you get what you pay for.

"I bought this system for my college appartment to replace a 400watt 2.1 system that failed on me just recently. When I saw the price and read the specs I couldn't believe it. I ran out and bought one immediately, and let me tell you it is a spectacular system for $150.
I was a little nervous at first because some people complained of volume issues, and that they couldn't hear voices, or that the bass was weak. I read the manual, setup the system, and it's perfect, the 5.1 works great, I can hear all the voices, and I turned up the subwoofer a bit to get more bass. I don't want to upset anyone but I have a feeling most of the bad reviews on here are from people who did not read the manual and setup the system properly.
After doing the auto calibrate I connected the system to my media center computer, set the receiver to auto detect the incoming signal (if it's 5.1, 2.1, etc) and it works great. I'm thoroughly impressed with the sound quality and power. It boggles my mind how much sound the tiny little satellite speakers can push out. This truly is a great deal, and if you can, pick one of these up before they're gone."

great for the price   03/28/2008
By JDBIV from akron, oh

What's great about it: good sound for bedroom
What's not so great: calibration is a bit tricky to get right

"i got this sony system for my room mate for his bedroom, set up was easy, but getting it on the right setting so it put put in 5.1 was a but tricky and he was about to return it untill i fixed it, which made it sounded amazing. calibration makes the set up easier so the speakers are at the right volume. when the set up is done right it sounds great, when done wrong which i believe happens most of the time it sounds awful. also an optical cable also makes a world of a differance. the reciever is a bit bulky but for how cheap it is you cant complain...."

Simple and Cheap and it works great   03/28/2008
By Gizzard28 from Clinton Township, MI

What's great about it: Cheap and simple.
What's not so great: Wish it had more digital audio inputs. Mainly optical

"I have had this system for over a year now and I love it. It was cheap and for the price you cannot beat it. The only down fall is the fact it only has one optical input making it a hassle to switch from my 360 to PS3. Oh well for the price I shouldnt complain. Its basic and the fact it will auto calibrate makes it a breeze to set up. This is the definition of plug and play. Guy this if your wanting to put together a simple system for a great price."

Good for the Price!   03/21/2008
By Kurb from Philadelphia PA

What's great about it: The PRICE
What's not so great: HUGE Receiver

"I bought this unit 3 days ago on sale for $127.49 and you can not beat that price!!! You get a great sound for your money and it's a Sony! The receiver is pretty huge however but still not too bad. I would definitely recommend this product if someone is looking for a more inexpensive surround sound."

Good inexpensive system   03/06/2008
By jediwright from Wisconsin

What's great about it: cost
What's not so great: it's not Bose

"I needed to replace my system. My old one had given up the ghost. I can't afford a Bose system so that was out. I could have spent more to get a system with a upconvert DVD player but the more I thought about it it just didn't make sense. BluRay has all but one out in the battle with HD DVD so paying $400+ dollars on a system with a DVD player that will be the newest beta max is just not a good option. I can get a decent amount of use out of this system and when BluRay players finally get in a realistic price range I'll buy it and upgrade my sound system. By the way I'm glad I didn't jump out and buy a HD player or worse both HD and BluRay like some people I know."

Perfect Item for HD TV's & PS3   02/23/2008
By bluetwenty6 from Houston, TX

What's great about it: Everything
What's not so great: Nothing Yet

"I did a lot of research on home theatre Systems & this Sony set fit my needs perfectly. I have a PS3 & a 1080p Samsung 40" LCD & all I was missing was the surround sound. I had some Xmas GC's that I've been saving for the right "gift" to get for myself & once I saw this item with almost a $40 price cut from two weeks ago, I decided to finally purchase the system. Installed it within 15-20 mins, sounds perfect for a bedroom & and / or living room. Recommend this item for anyone who owns a HD television w/ or w/out a gaming system. Optical connects directly to the rear of the HD TV...easy install & very loud for the price. Thanx for everyone's reviews b/c w/out it I would have still been skeptical about purchasing this time."

Great for Gaming!   02/21/2008
By RonaldB from MD

What's great about it: Easy hookup
What's not so great: Remote and Subwoofer....

"Right out the box this system is great! Easy to wire. It was hard to program the unit at first but I got a hang of it after actually reading the user's manual (duh!). At first I was thinking to myself "how come I'm not getting surround sound?" Turns out the true 5.1 surround sound are in the the PLII MV and PLII MS settings. This is important to know if you want full Dolby Digital or DTS. Leave the receiver on either setting and you don't have to worry about it when you watch movies or especially when you play video games with in game Dolby Digital like I do. For example, I play Halo on 360 and you hear everything around you as if you're in the game. You hear grenades blowing up behind you as well the gunfire on your left and right sides, you get my drift. Another great feature is the ability to hook up the microphone that comes with the system and calibrate the speakers. Simply plug the mic and put it where you usually sit and use the auto calibration, it will set your speakers to sound more life-like, especially for people like me who have speakers that are not placed evenly. I moved into a house where the wires were already in the walls as well as the speaker mounts. My left speakers are way out to the left and my right speakers are closer to me. Basically, calibrating it helped a lot. Another great thing I love about this is that all you have to do is drive a nail in the wall and since the speakers are light you can just hang them up on the wall! No speaker mounts necessary!

My only gripes with this unit is the remote and subwoofer. The remote is below average and all the buttons on it are too close together and jumbled up and in weird places but a universal remote will solve this problem. The sub is ok, but I wish it was stronger. I don't know if I can agree with some of the reviews here about people saying the bass hits them hard, it doesn't for me and I have the Bass turned up to the max. But for the price I paid for this I really can't complain. It's not great but it doesn't suck that's for sure. The sub can always be replaced but at the moment this is the best system at this price. Go get it!"

Great for the Price   02/15/2008
By Dust from Baton Rouge, LA

What's great about it: Nice looks, easy installation, good sound, FM/AM Tuner, price
What's not so great: No HDMI inputs

"A great system, especially for the money. Perfect for bedrooms, but would still be nice in a living room. Installation was a breeze, even someone with no experience could do it. Manual is easy to follow. The only thing I would like on it are HDMI inputs & outputs, but that simply is not an option for most of these lower priced systems. It does have a decent bit of ports though. I'm very satisifed with this system."

Works great no problems   02/15/2008
By AlexR from Duluth, MN

What's great about it: Easy set up, great bass, great front speaker sound
What's not so great: back speakers quiet (easy to fix though)

"I'm happy about everything about this purchase so far. The back speakers are quiet like other people have mentioned, but you can alter each speaker volume individually, so quiet the front and turn up the back...and problem solved. Bass is awesome, works great with my current tv Insignia 42", and at under $200 just a great buy."

Good Deal-get it quick!   02/12/2008
By mbeav

What's great about it: AWESOME price, good sound
What's not so great: none so far

"I have a fairly small apartment and this system is more than perfect. I know some reviews said the speaker wires weren't long enough but I didn't have any problems. The sound is good and I got it on sale. I had it shipped from a different store to my local one (at no extra cost to me) and I was under the impression that this model wouldn't be around much longer. Thought it was a great deal and will most likely buy my hdtv there soon."

Good value   02/10/2008
By sunnstars from florida

What's great about it: easy to set-up, easy to use
What's not so great: needed to add $150 in cables

"I received a different system for Christmas that I didn't like at all, and was very surprised when I took it back to exchange it for this one - the first was much more money with poor sound. This is a great value, the sound is great, has plenty of inputs for all the different components and it can set it's own levels. I'm not a sound expert, but I didn't have to look at the manual to set it up or use. I would recommend this system to anyone looking for something affordable that brings great sound and features"

Great Buy   02/09/2008
By 4LC4PON3 from Elbridge NY

What's great about it: Sound Quality, Nice Bass
What's not so great: none as of yet

"I went to Best Buy and was looking at the Really High end Denon's and so forth and came across this sony system. me being into Video games already had a system but it was kinda old and started cutting out after awhile so looking at the price I grabbed it. it was a clearance for 100.00 and was the last one.

I got it home hooked it up and for what i paid I def got a great deal. the sub hits Hard enough for me and it does get pretty Loud. I dont use it for anything but my Xbox 360 and PS3, Games and Movies so it sounds Great. Would Def recommend this is you can get it as cheap as i did.

I gave it a 4 out of 5 cause I know there is better out there but not for the Price."
