What's great about it: None
What's not so great: Sound quality is aweful, little bass if any.
"I bought this when my Pioneer receiver died after 17 years of loyal service. I bought it b/c I thought it would be easy and convenient to install and that Sony is a good name. Well, let me tell you.......that was 45 minutes of my life I will never get back. First the speakers were hardwired. The auto calibration was nice, but it would have been nicer if you did not have to turn the volume up to 50-55 (out of 70) to get adequate sound. My pioneer was too loud at 1/4 volume and the bass was outstanding. In fact I did not have a lot of the features required for "good" sound today and my pioneer still performed high above this unit. DO NOT WASTE YOU MONEY OR TIME! YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED!!! After all was said and done I went back to Pioneer and got the vsx 1017 receiver. A bit more expensive, but MANY more options. Home theater in a box is GARBAGE! Get the individual components!"

Confused

What's great about it: Seems to be a good value for the price.
What's not so great: RCA connectors would have been much better for hooking up the speakers.
"I have a newer UpConvert DVD attached from the Digital Coaxial input, and an old vcr/dvd player combo hooked up using the TVs Digital Optical connector. I have adjusted the DBs on all the speakers (the default seems to be 0 decibels –which I would think would be no sound at all?), also the Distance on all of them. And I have tried about all the options through the AFD button – Dolby Dolby II, etc. and tried the Movies and Music options. No matter what, the Master Volume has to be in the high 40’s to low 50’s range (IE 48 to 54) for any speech. For music that uses the Subwoofer and especially anything with LFE - then I have to turn it down. First time I watched Phantom of the Opera, and that subwoofer started, I got complaints from family watching TV upstairs! Anyway, does everybody have to have the Volume that high for ordinary dialogue? If I’m STILL doing something wrong, I like to hear suggestions as to the right way to adjust this gizmo."

Great system for the price

What's great about it: Fast and easy setup
What's not so great: Nothing significant
"Bought this system for bedroom because I was pleased with a similar model that I bought about a year ago for my living room. This system is ideal for a bedroom, average sized family room or living room. Buyers should keep in mind that the system is designed for movie and television viewing not playing music at high volume. If you want a "loud system" you probably want to buy separate components and larger speakers that are more suitable for music playing.
I agree with one of the earlier reviewers in that this system sounds much better with an optical cable. If you don't want to spend the money on an optical cable digital coax cables yield similar sound at a cheaper price and are actually more durable. RCA plugs are adequate but the sound is not as good.
Overall terrific system for small to medium sized rooms and for the price you cannot go wrong. If you position the speakers properly and calibrate the speaker levels you should have a wonderful home theater experience."

Know how to set it up right, and it's amazing.

What's great about it: Absolutely Top of the Line sound, at entry level price.
What's not so great: You MUST use digital inputs for good sound. The Receiver is way better quality than the speakers.
"First and foremost, know how to set this up right: USE THE DIGITAL INPUTS!!!!! If your media devices do not have digital outputs you will not be impressed with this receiver. If you have digital output capable equipment and don't use the digital inputs on this reciever you will be sorely disappointed with both volume and sound quality. If you use the digital (coax or optical) inputs, you will be ABSOLUTELY BLOWN AWAY. The sound quality of this receiver FAR outweighs the quality of the speakers. The lack of tweeters in the speakers hurts them. I hooked up this receiver to my own high quality speaker set, and quickly found out the receiver is AMAZING in terms of tweakability and awesome sound quality. I can't tell you how impressed I am with the performance for the price with this kit. You get a fantastic receiver and very good sound quality overall, with plenty of bass in the subwoofer, and once you find a good deal on some top of the line speakers, you have as nice a HT system as anyone, for very little. There is a TON of bang for the buck in this deal. Highly recommend."

Amazing Deal

What's great about it: 2 digital inputs, deep bass, clear sound
What's not so great: none (for the money)
"Those who are complaining about low sound output are not hooking up to the correct inputs. The sound is amazing for this price! I hooked up my cable DVR to the optical digital input and my DVD with to the coaxial digital input with the included cable. I use the basic audio inputs for my satelite receiver and cd jukebox. A few small adjustments to the equalizer and the system cranks....... yes, the surround speakers, too (read the manual if you think the sound is too low... you can boost any/all of the speakers). Distortion free, full, rich sound, even at MAX volume. I think some people are hooking up using their TV output. BIG MISTAKE, and those are probably the same people who say it's not loud enough. You can change the display of the inputs to match your component. I made mine say FiOS TV, BlueRay, etc. (again, read the manual.... there are many options). True, the speaker wires are permentantly connected to the speakers, but seriously, how much can you do for this price?? Amazing deal and one of the best purchases ever. I plan on getting another one for the game room."

What's great about it: sony product, simple to put together
What's not so great: back speakers are quiet, speakers have built in wire, wire might be alittle short
"great system for a small room, simple easy pictured instructions, all necessary cables, very simple model. the front speaker wire can be alittle short especially if your trying to run the wire on the ground and come up behind a shelf like me. great bass. rear speakers can get drowned out by the left, right, and middle speakers if placed to close to them. im sure if i tweak the settings ill get more sound out of them. out of the box an OK system."

What's great about it: power & features
What's not so great: limited ports
"Excellent Home Theater for the money (I got it on-sale). Even-so, for a low-cost Home Theater, it does a nice job. Cranking-up the volume to 'MAX' (does get too loud) & it has lots of 'bass'. The only problem was connecting it to a Sony HDTV, the sound was way too low---the solution I found was to by-pass the Sony HDTV audio-out port, and run the audio directly from the cable/reciever to the back of the HT-DDW790's DVD/digital coax audio-in port. It got a definite boost in volume, but instead of the display reading 'TV', it would read 'DVD'. All-in-all....decent system for the price-"

Great System for a Small Room

What's great about it: Great sound and value
What's not so great: 2 digital inputs only
"If you already have a DVD player that supports digital audio and you intend to use this in a small room, den or bedroom get this system. The sound quality is excellent, the setup is easy, and the mic to calibrate the speakers is very useful. The only downside is the 2 digital audio. You can run digital audio from your DVD and cable/satellite and experience awesome surround sound. However, if you have a PS3 or other system supporting digital audio, get a theater system with at least 3 digital inputs. The left right front and surround speakers are small enough to mount to the wall with the included screws in the back of the speakers. Even though the subwoofer is unpowered it provides plenty of bass for the smaller room.
Excellent for the $140 I bought it for."

THIS SYSTEM IS AWESOME AND IT ONLY TOOK ABOUT 30 MINUTES TO SET IT UP! THE SOUND AND BASS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR AND IT SOUNDS LIKE I'M IN THE THEATRE!! WELL IN MY ENTERTAINMENT ROOM ANYWAY. BUT WILL KEEP YOU UPDATED BUT WOULD RECOMMEND AT THIS POINT!!!"

What's great about it: Everything
What's not so great: needs more speaker wire
"I read some reviews about people having to crank the volume way up to get a sound out of this system to hear voices. The reason people are having these problems is that they dont know how to use this system to optimize its capability. When you are running your television thru this sytem, turn your tv speakers off. Only use the system for your tv audio. Also, make sure you hit your afd button until it says multi ST. This gives you the best sound for all of the things you want to use the surround feature for. I run my DVD player and ipod thru this system and it sounds awesome. Would deffinintly reccomend this to anyone."

What's not so great: Worthless as a GOOD Home Theater System

What's great about it: Many
What's not so great: Speakers Prewired
"I read other reviews about this product on this and other sites before making the purchase. They were all very helpful. Since the speakers are permanently attached to the speaker wire my only concern was the length of the wire on the rear speakers to place them where I wanted them. I asked people at the store and called Sony, but did not get a precise answer. I decided to take a chance and bought the system. I was relieved to discover the rear speaker wire length was about 40' which was ample for my application. The set up was easy, about 2 hours, and the auto calibration is great. This is an excellent, full featured, powerful and cost effective system."
