What's great about it: everything is good on this system
What's not so great: none
When I was shopping for a home theatre system I took about 3 months looking, and listening to different systems and I finially found this one. I have my tv hooked up to it, my playstation 3, my cable, and the dvd player hooked up to it. The nice thing about it is it has the HDMI out and inputs. If you want soft and quiet sounding or loud and clear sound I reccomend getting this system.

What's great about it: Great Movie sound.
What's not so great: Cables should have been included.
I use this Sony Home Theater System for watching TV and movies. It has more than lived up to my expectations. A gamer buddy came by and thought he would want more bass for his purposes, but overall I'm pleased with the performance. Do some homework, be prepared, and the setup should go smoothly. I had a hi tech friend standing by just in case, but didn't need to make the call.

What's great about it: Features: Digital audio, HDMI, Component inputs, DVD
What's not so great: Poor crankability: No bang for your buck
I particularly bought this home theatre system because of it's features. But I was not expecting mediocrity from Sony. I recently had a 800 watt Panasonic that had more boom than this. The first thing I did was pop in a Hellboy DVD and then played some Lynard Skynyrd. The speakers performed well with crisp sound, but when you crank the volume there is no boom in the subwoofer and the speakers don't pick up in loudness. Even if I played with the various speaker modes and DTS, I still wasn't enjoying the movie as it ought to be and "Free Bird" sounded like you were in the nosebleed section at a concert. Don't get me wrong, the Sony HT 7100DH is a nice looking home theatre system that fits pretty much anywhere you want it. But buyer beware: If your looking for a home theatre system that blows you away, this is not it. Don't make the same mistake I made and settle for this system. And if you have to settle for it, don't pay more than $400 for it.

What's great about it: The unit does what I wanted--plays great surround sound from my TV and DVDs, plus it nicely upconverts my DVDs.
What's not so great: It takes time and patience and many extras that must be purchased separately
This is my first home theater unit. The unit does all that I wanted and expected. But you can save aggravation if you purchase the several cables and other accessories that you will need to hook it up that don't come with the unit. The other reviews were very helpful to me in learning this before I made my purchase. For example, if you have HDTV, you need to buy an HDMI cable (which cost $70 at Best Buy) to connect to the DVD to the TV to get the upconverted picture from DVDs that Sony advertizes. You will also need to buy 2 digital optical cables to get sound from the DVD and from the TV (another $30 each). In the case of the TV, I had to connect this cable from my DVR to the receiver. Finally, some other reviewers suggested purchasing banana clips to hook up the speakers. I purchased these and was very grateful as these makes it much easier to hook the speaker wires to the receiver. All in all it took me about 5 hours from start of installation to finish. So be patient.

What's great about it: Enough inputs, HDMI, 5-DVD Changer player, Auto Audio Calibration, plays multiple formats
What's not so great: Flimsy Wires, Noot working on some devices, Can't hang front speakers to the wall, Subwoofer is very bulky, huge box
The title of this review says it all. I bought this system from Best Buy. From the looks of it, it looks like a great system, with enough inputs to keep me satified with the equipment that I have to give me great surround sound. Those equipment are: - 42" 1080p HDTV - XBOX 360 - Playstation 3 - Nintendo Wii And now, thanks to this system, I got a 5-DVD changer Player. Ok, here it goes downhill. The speaker wires are not great. It's not plug and play. Connecting the wires on the back of the receiver is crazy and so difficult. It's like a screw and you stick the wire in, and then you screw it in again, but the wire is so flimsy that I have to do it again over and over again, very frustrating. And, oh my god, trying to hook all those equipment that I mentioned before into this reciever is such a headache. I followed the manual and hooked up the DVD player via HDMI cable, but since this receiver doesn't give me sound when I use HDMI, I have to use a Optical cable, which I did. Not luck, no VIDEO, WHAT THE HECK!!!!!!!!. I do not want to use the Composite cable, which gives me 480i. The composite cables work, NO AUDIO. I didn't buy a HDMI cable for nothing. Believe me, the set up is all correct. The only one that worked with this receiver is the PS3, which is my BluRay player. That worked fine. I haven't tried the Wii yet, if you were in my position, you will be tired to get into that. My next grip is my HDTV. I have a Built in Tuner, so I watch HD channels. It's a cable wire straight to the wall to the TV, but now how do I get surround sound with my HDTV is a puzzle that I have yet to figure out. After two days, I'm so frustrated with this system that it's not even funny. And packing this system is going to take me a day because the package is crazy and the box is HUUUUUUUGGGGEEEEEEEE. I'm still wondering why this system came with a DVD player when HD is the future, it's nice, but ..........why?? Anywayz, not happy, I may after I get everything hooked up, but from the looks of things, it will take me awhile, plus the customer support hasn't been helpful, bunch of people who don't have technical reads back what I read in the manual, and I'm standing there listening to these people who can't figure out why I can't even hook up the DVD player that came with the system via HDMI. It could be because my TV is 1080p and the DVD only gives out 1080i, but if that is the case, than why is the PS3 working in full 1080p. Not to mention the DVD menu is like somebody drew it with crayons.

What's great about it: Sound, Price
What's not so great: None so far
This system is everything I have wanted. I have been waiting to purchase this HTIB for a long time now, and after hooking it up I'm 125% satisfied! There is no need to spend thousands of $$$ on a system because this one is fantastic.
I recommend upgrading to digital audio cables for your DVD and or Cable Box, when the little blue light comes on your receiver it is pure heaven. (Those who own this, understand what I mean).
GET THIS! YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!

What's great about it: Terrific, clear, full sound with nice separation. DTS decoder and HDMI hookup
What's not so great: HDMI hookup only passes video not audio, center channel could be better
I purchased this system a year ago. I have been more than satisfied with it-the sound quality during dvd playback is amazing on DTS. Dolby Digital movies sound good but is not nearly as rich as DTS on this system. The only thing i dont like is that my center channel tends to clip at high volume, over 60. Max is 70. But that could be the thin cheap speaker wire and is an easy fix.
A major con was when i hooked up my PS3 last nite, i had no sound. I bought another HD cable only to find out there is no audio that passes thru the reciever HDMI input. You'll need to buy a seperate cable. I had to go back to the store and buy a digital optical cable to hook from the PS3 to the receiver. IT sounds great now though. For the money, it cant be beat.

What's great about it: Good sound for the money, Sony brand
What's not so great: Crummy included wire, NO HDMI SOUND VIA HDMI CABLE
All in all good product. Great sound for the money, automated setup (once you get all the connections made) is easy (and loud). I must say I am baffled by the known limitation of the product that there is no audio carried through the HDMI cables when you use them with this receiver. You have to use a separate connection. Ideally HDMI cables would drastically shrink the number of cables you need as they are high-def and multi-channel audio all in one, but I had to use separate optical cables to get my sound. Once I did it sounded great, but it seemed that a few extra $$$ on Sony's part could have enabled this feature and saved me the headache and the money on the optical cables. Not a bad buy if you know what you need ahead of time and can avoid another trip to the store for more cables. Additionally, I think the receiver can only pass 1080i video, not full 1080p, but check on that. And if you want the better sound, grab 100 feet or so of decent speaker wire. The stuff they give you is pretty weak. You can also custom name your inputs, so "video 3" can become "Xbox 360" if you want. Kinda neat.

What's great about it: Sound quality, Sony quality, HDMI cross-over, many adjustable features, traditional Receiver look, three digital inputs
What's not so great: No sound cross-over w/ HDMI switch, pesky speaker wire inputs, short Sub cable
For the money, this is a great system. I helped a friend purchase this system about 6 months ago, and after hearing the impressive sound quality, I then purchased this for myself (replacing an older, less wattage Sony Home Theater system that served me well for 3 years).
The sound quality and volume are great for a room no larger than 20 feet x 20 feet --> that's the size of my room, and I've mounted all five speakers (fronts up high, rears mid level, cener above plasma) and I have this at 45 to 50 (sound level) at most times (maxes at 70). So if you wanna crank it, you don't have much more room at the top. The sub is fairly tight bass, but it's probably pretty average for your home-in-a-box system, it's self powered which is good, and for the most part does a pretty decent job. More of a sound enthusiast would think it's not that great and want to purchase another sub, i would imagine. For 5.1 movies and digital tv, it's great.
Cons include the dinky, cheap plastic toggles for the speaker wire inputs at the back of the receiver. They seem like they can easily break, so be very very careful when you hook up the wires. I read other reviews where owners have already broken these. The Gauge wiring they give you is also fairly cheap, it's about 18 to 20 gauge i think (just eye-ballin' it) -- I'm sure you could squeeze out a little improvement in sound quality if you purchased some after-market speaker wire.

I recently purchased and set-up the Sony HT7100DH system with a digital cable box to my Mitsubishi 52" DLP TV. The setup was easy enough, except you cannot connect the DVD sound via an optical cable - I had to use the (supplied) digital coax connection. Everything worked fine until I ran the quick setup per the User Guide - then the DVD audio was lost. After a bit of fumbling around, I found the Audio setup menu and by selecting the DVD audio mapped to Coax (which it was already) the system began responding. That was a strange glitch to say the least.
Upconverted standard DVD content looks amazing on my TV, I can only imagine what true HighDef (HD-DVD/Blu_ray) looks like.
The Auto Calibration worked very well for my speaker placement and room size - the sound is rich and clear. Having HDTV from cable and the DVD ported into the receiver via the pass-through HDMI is a nice touch - we can control whether we are watching TV or DVD by selecting the mode on the receiver and having dedicated audio inputs (one optical, one digital coax) means both are in surround sound. Listening to music from FM stations or CDs is also very clear and rich - the whole house seems filled with music easily, without being obtrusive.
All in all, I am very satisfied with the system and would recommend it to my friends and family.

This receiver has a lot to offer for the money. 5 disc upconverting DVD player for your new HDTV, HDMI compatibility, an actual AV receiver (unlike the all-in-one receivers in some HT systems- look for the receiver/dvd player in one unit) for lots of connections, improved sound quality and many more audio tweaks, the auto calibration mic (for those that want an automated setup), and sound quality that's not too bad! It's a perfect addition to anyone's first home theater, especially when on a budget.

I bought this product for a small home theater and it works very well. Instructions are easy to follow, and it took about 30 min to set-up. Dual HDMI is a great feature. The system gets loud enough for a smaller space, but will not be enough power for larger living rooms. Only issues I have with this home theater was having to spend BIG money on cables (3 HDMI, 1 Optical) and that the cable connectors in the back of the receiver are low quality and break easily.

This system is worth the price but it is not a great buy at all. The sound is good but the only way to connect the dvd player to the receiver is using a coaxial cable; which the receiver for some reason has trouble processing the 3/2.1 output. One thing that is very good on this product is that there are two HDMI inputs in the back with an output so you are able to connect one more component to you TV using HDMI. The biggest downfall of this system, besides it's coaxial issues, is the sheer size of the speakers and the receiver. They are bug and bulky and is clearly the first thing that is noticed when walking into a room.

This is a great system. I run both my computer and a DVD player via HDMI cables to the control unit and then connect the unit to a 32" Phillips HDTV. It works great and the quality of picture is great. The only thing that I was disappointed with was that the HDMI inputs are a "pass through" only. This means that the audio from my computer and DVD player have to be separate from the HDMI cable (kind of defeating the purpose of HDMI). It only has one coaxial audio input so I had to use a regular RCA audio cable from my computer. I hardly noticed a difference in the sound quality so I'm not too upset. You definitely have to be learned in audio/video equipment if you buy this because although I had no trouble setting it up and getting all of my other electronics to work with this unit, it seems that other people had troubles.

I bought this to replace an old analogue Bose Lifestyle system that is intermittently shorting out (despite factory service).
Setup & Connections: Fair to Good
I purchased the Rocketfish transmitter for the rear speakers--works fine. Connections between the receiver and components are logical and easy to figure out. The main speaker connections on the receiver are very difficult to connect and the instruction manual is very vague about them. I had to reconnect at least 5 times to get all the speakers to operate. I almost took it back. Bose speakers connect easier.
DVD Performance: Good
I'm using it with an old TV so I'm not getting the optimal performance--but it works fine and the remote is easy to figure out. I wanted to have the ability to connect to an HDTV when I get one--believe this will fill the bill and I like the fact that I can replace the DVD later if I want to...not so with my old Bose.
Receiver Performance: Good
The remote is a little busy compared to a Bose, and it requires line of sight to operate, but it's easy enough to figure out. There are a few pre-programmed sound fields for movies, music etc...Which is nice. AM/FM reception is pretty solid with the included antennas. Not so for my old Bose.
Sound Quality: Very Good
I am no expert on sound, but the system sounds very good to me and met my primary goals: good performance playing DVDs, CDs, TV or the radio.
XM Radio: Didn't try that yet. Don't have a subscription or an antenna for it.
OVERALL: Good to Very Good performance. I would recommend this (and the Rocketfish wireless kit) to a friend with a warning about the main speaker connections to the receiver. They are cruel and unusual.
