This player is excellent overall. I own a new 50" 1080p Plasma, and I believe the up conversion does a great job. I've watched about 10 different movies so far, and have never seen a single glitch of any kind. Audio quality is outstanding (using optical out).
My only gripe with this unit is with its zoom feature. I wanted to watch a movie while zoomed, in order to eliminate the top & bottom black bars that Hollywood seems to think are cool for some reason (bars exist even on 16:9 display). When zoomed in, a little text based indicator appears in the upper right corner of the TV, and it stays there until you exit out of zoom. I found this really annoying!!
If you need/want to use the zoom feature, you may want to look at other models. Otherwise this player does a great job with most other functions.
What's great about it: Display and Audio are Excellent
What's not so great: Zoom leaves indicator on screen

I bought this DVD player to replace one that would skip with the slightest disk scratch or smudge. I get movies from Netflix, so often they aren't in the best condition. This player is much better at dealing with disk imperfections - the few times it started to have a problem, it "powered through" the problem area instead of skipping to the next scene. The upconversion looks great on my plasma TV (interestingly enough, the picture is better with my TV when connected with an S-video cable, not an HDMI cable). I also like how the player will remember where you were in a movie and will pick up from that same spot (even if the DVD player has been opened). No complaints so far - I'm very happy with my purchase.
What's great about it: great picture, good at dealing with disk imperfections
What's not so great: none

I recently bought a big screen tv, so I knew I would need an upconvert player. The player runs nice and just as expected, no problems, and displays the video nicely on my TV. Over all, its a good buy.
What's great about it: good this, good that, it's what I expected
What's not so great: none that I see

I recently purchased Casion Royal and found that it would not play in my 3 year old Toshiba. At the time, I could not justify paying $500.00 plus dollars for a new Blu-Ray player and decided to buy a stopgap unit. After reading some reviews, I decided not to skimp on the interconnect and also purchased a Monster 1000 series HDMI cable. Hook-up was straightforward, and in abour 15-30 mins I was watching DVDs. Right out of the gate, the picture appeared grainy, with noticeable video noise. I am not sure if the upconversion caused this, or perhaps I was expecting too much, (which I doubt, because my old Toshiba looked better playing all DVDs) but either way, the picture was sub-par. Reccommend saving the purchase price and apply it to a Blu-Ray player.
What's great about it: moderately low price
What's not so great: noisy video

After suffering through TWO count em' TWO upconvert nightmares from Magnavox and Phillips...I finally went back to what I was familiar with...SONY! And guess what???...It was beautiful. The picture, the sound and of course the pausing...Purchase one and pause a frame and look at the clarity! It will astound you. I am running it through a Samsung HDTV 50inch Plasma with a Sony Home theater for audio. You will not regret this DVD player purchase...especially at this price!
What's great about it: Everything you come to expect from Sony!
What's not so great: None whatsoever!!!!

This DVD is near-perfect. Set up is easy, the picture is outstanding, and it will play all my JPEG discs, whether CD-R, CD-RW or DVDs. You can adjust the picture mode for DVDs to your liking, changing the brightness, contrast and sharpness. And for the JPEGS, there are several different modes to change from picture to picture. Also, get this: if I take a DVD totally out of the player, then put it in later, it starts where it left off. I love this thing.
What's great about it: picture quality, set-up ease, features, price

I just purchased this product to go with my Sony Bravia 32" LCD HDTV (Model: KDL-32ML130) and couldn't be happier with the results. It's a great buy for those who are not ready to spend a few hundred bucks on a Blu-ray DVD player but want to enjoy a higher quality picture playback for their standard DVD library. Before I bought this player I hooked up my standard DVD/VCR combo to the HDTV only to get a distorted, grainy picture. Once I hooked up this DVD player via HDMI cable (recommend BELKIN brand) the picture was instantly noticeable! Watching movies with higher resolution, awesome picture quality and color. If you're looking to improve your current standard DVD library this is a great buy for the money!
What's great about it: Great picture quality playback on standard DVDs, easy to setup, works great with HDTVs!
What's not so great: None

Sharp, bright image. A few jaggies, but not much, most are cleaned up thru HDMI outputs. Better than average image clarity and motion handling. Color temperature is a bit cool (a Sony trademark?) and preset options are too contrasty but can be fixed with picture controls. Used on SDTV and HDTV, works well on both. Plays DVD-R's that gave my old Toshiba SD-4800 occasional problems. Dimly-lighted and night scenes are surprisingly clear for this price. Audio also better than average, though slanted toward treble with no tone adjustments, but I fixed this on my receiver setup. Zoom is 2x or 4x, which is a bit much, with onscreen icons that won't go away while image is zoomed. Not quite as good a unit as my SD-4800, but the closest thing I've found under $500. All in all, a very accomplished player at this price. I'm keeping my old player, and the SONY as well.
What's great about it: Nice video and audio, good features + adjustments
What's not so great: zooms too much, can't turn off onscreen info

We just purchased a 23" Samsung HDTV 720p for our son. This DVD player does a fantastic job playing everything back in near HD quality. The video is better than the normal 480p straight playback at 720p/1080i.
We tested this player at home first with the DH Labs HMDI 1.3 cable going up to the Sony Bravia XBR4 46" HDMI input 3. A high quality HDMI cable will cost as much as the Sony player.
Very impressive output going direct to the XBR4. No motion artifacts. Excellent sound through our home theater gear. Some blurs and less detail than seen from true 1080 image processor that costs 30 times more...but again this Sony is a great 480/720p/1080i/1080p bargain going direct to the XBR4.
We compared the image to our Oppo 980 that is processed through our DVDO VP-50...which actually upconverts to a true 1080p. The Sony was not anywhere as good...but it is far better than a plain 480p output. The Oppo costs $170 and it has a much noisier mechanism! The Oppo strengths are in the audio playback. The video is on par with the Sony at 480p and 720p.
Again, is you require the better universal audio playback, both players are great, but the audiophile nod goes to the Oppo 980, which has superior audio processing and plays every format.
For less than $100 the Sony is a player that can keep most happy for a very long time and is a true performance-value. If you need an upconverting player that is fast, quiet and inexpensive this Sony is a true videophile bargain. Just make sure you can take advantage of the HDMI input on your brand of HDTV.
Buy it and enjoy.
I bought one at $79.99 on sale at BB.
What's great about it: Quiet, Stable, fast, clear A/V outstanding performance for the price
What's not so great: None

I'm using HDMI and it's good. The surround is good. I haven't tried the component inputs yet. This is my first time using and seeing HD upconversion on a dvd player, but it mostly works on widescreen DVDs. Although I tried "The Descent" DVD and it does not show as big of an improvement as the "Saw" movies or "Rush Hour3". I love the way the DVD player formats the movies into true widescreen. The CD quality is good on this too.
What's great about it: nice HD widescreen picture, good CD sound, a few good setup options
What's not so great: picture could be a slight bit better

I bought this model after my dvd player broke down. This model had good user reviews, so despite the higher price I bought it because I wanted to be able to view HD while the format wars continue. It works well so far, except it is slow to accept a disk and to start playing the disk on the screen. Still I trust the Sony brand and trust it will last a while. I'd recommend it.
What's great about it: Sleek, nice picture, Sony brand name
What's not so great: Expensive, somewhat slow

I bought this as an alternative to a Blu Ray player. Previously I was using a 6-year-old SONY DVD with composite RGB connections. I plugged this player into my new Samsung HDTV via HDMI cable and was immediately impressed. I did not connect this using the RGB cables so I do not know if the RGB improvement would be similar. I saw details my old SONY player could not come close to showing on the new HDTV. I am now watching my existing DVDs with new excitement!
If you connect this through an HDMI capable pass-through receiver for sound, be sure to read the setup instructions for both carefully. Initially I did not and the DVD would intermittently skip or misplay. Once I corrected the sound settings between the DVD and receiver, no more trouble. Again I used the HDMI cable for the sound connection as well. I suspect the other audio connections would give similar sound. My picture and 5.1 sound are truly incredible!
I would certainly recommend this upgrade if you are using a DVD with composite connection (non-upconverting) to a new HDTV with HDMI connections. This is definitely worth the cost! This is the best $100 I have spent for AV equipment in years!
What's great about it: Great upconverting DVD player!

Everything is A-OK with this player. I added it to a sony HD TV I bought in 2002 with 1080i capabilities, easy connect up from the HDMI out put to my HDAVI on my TV ( the old HD connection way ) which HD connection cable can be bought at Best Buy also. Makes my 480 DVD's ( regular DVD's ) look like HD quality 720p on my TV and the sound is awesome. A lot of talk about these units being slow to boot-up. I don't understand where this comes from. I have no problems at all with this unit. A great buy for the buck. Hope this helps someone.
