What's great about it: Cheap ink
What's not so great: Doesn't work
"I wish you could rate this 0 stars, it makes you pick a minimum of 1 stars. After 2 printers, we ended up with a HP.
What a disappointment this was. I have had a few different Kodak cameras and printers and have been very pleased with the quality and customer service until this printer.
We purchased this printer based on the brand name and the advertisement of saving money on the ink.
I got the first printer hooked up and never got past the "print head missing" error. After multiple times of removing and reinstalling the print head and ink cartridges I attempted to get hold of Kodak. After 45 minutes on hold I packed it up and exchanged it for another printer. The second printer came right up with no problems. It printed the calibration sheet and we "thought" we were good to go, then we got the dreaded "print head missing" error. After reinstalling it the error went away, but when printing all that came out was a huge ink smudge across the paper. We tried the head cleaning but nothing helped and we still kept getting the "print head missing". Took it back to Best Buy and ended up with the HP C7280."

What's great about it: Cost of toner is only $15 per cartridge
What's not so great: IT DIDNT WORK
"I was all excited to receive this product. I got home and set it up and was ready to begin printing all my photos. I printed ONE photo and then received an error on the screen that the print head was missing or not install properly. I removed it and reinstalled it multiple times and still recieved the same error. I tried looking for a Kodak support phone number but only found a web-site which wasn't helpful. I returned it two days later."

What's great about it: good quality
What's not so great: too many problems
"I have owned 2 of the the 5500s for a week and have had to take out the cartridges and the printheads every day to get them to print. Kodak will not answer phone or return e-mails. I am returning printers today. I do not recommend this printer to anyone."

poor card making prints

What's great about it: good quality on kodak brand photo paper, cheap ink
What's not so great: poor quality on card stock and non-kodak brand paper
"If you plan to use your printer to make cards or any documents that have pictures on card stock pick another printer. The quality on my previous printer was far superior. If you load Kodak's software you can not print efficiently from other print shop programs.
If you don't mind using Kodak paper exclusively then you will get your money's worth. The quality on Kodak paper was great, but this printer did not serve my purpose."

What's great about it: Inexpensive photo and color printing
What's not so great: Setup was difficult
"I love this printer, its cheap, easy to use, and does a great job. My only complaint about the machine was as I was setting it up the status screen gave me an error message that directed me to contact technical support. It was a very quick fix, I was directed to remove the ink, remove the printhead, reinstall the printhead and turn the power off for a few minutes. When I turned the machine back on everything worked. Having that bit of troubleshooting information available in an owner's manual would have made me give it 5 stars."

"I finished the installation process and did the trial run. It quickly went blank after giving me an error code. I called Kodak and talked for an hour with tech support. They finally determined that it was a bad printhead. I notice with the other reviews that this problem has surfaced with others. Kodak offered me a new one but I am going to take it back and look for a different company. Why should I risk more problems?"

What's not so great: Replacing the entire machine month after month rather than just the ink
"I have in my possession right now my third 5500 since June 30th ('07). I have had trouble from the start. Jamming papers. Error messages, faxes not working. Latest one now is since an upgrade to the firmware, the incoming fax does not accept nor does the scanner work any longer. I'm totally fed up and will be demanding my money back as I promised I would if I had to send this 3rd one back. They want me to 'try again' but I am unwilling to swap out yet another Kodak 5500 for the fourth time in four months This one lasted the longest.... probably all of 6 weeks. I am just a private individual who prints every day but not excessively by any means. It's a home printer and it's lousy! Sorry, Kodak... I think you rushed to the finish line on this one when it was not ready to be marketed."

"I am super happy I bought the Kodak printer even though the best buy sales people tried to dissuade me from getting it. The set up was super easy for both Mac and PC, both of which I use to print from.
I was most amazed at the printing quality on both photo paper and regular printer paper - AWESOME and much better than other printers I tried at the store.
I was also really impressed by the speed it prints at and finally the best thing is how long the ink lasts, waaaaay longer than my last printer from a two letter company; and its much cheaper to buy...CANNOT RECOMMEND THE KODAK EASYSHARE MORE HIGHLY!!!"

Great quality low cost prints

"I am very happy with the quality of prints for both photos and documents. The ink does not run when using a highlighter on black text documents, and the photo picture quality is great for being at home. The printer is very fast in draft mode, but much slower in high quality.
Scanner and copier work well too. The Document feeder is a great asset.
The low cost of ink with high picture quality makes this a great buy."

"I have read many reviews on this printer both good and bad. Picked one up at Best Buy yesterday and it was broken right out of the box. Phone support was good and they will be sending me another printer head out in 3-5 days. I may change my mind later, but as of right now if it doesn't work with the new head I will be returning it."

"I am very pleased with my 5500. The only problem I've had so far is the fax machine occasionally answers a regular phone call even when set to "manual" for taking fax calls.
The picture printing quality is the best I've ever seen in an inkjet printer. But then again, I expect nothing less from Kodak. I did two 81/2 X 11 borderless color prints taken with my Kodak Z740 camera. Outstanding!
I agree with a previous review that the scanner interface could be improved. All of the functions of this machine seem to be focused on pictures. It was a bit difficult, but not impossible, to scan a b/w document to my computer.
I love the cheap ink, but it takes more than that to win me over. Kodak has a real winner here."

A very good printer

"The printer is built very well and the installation went very well. The good parts are that the print quality is very good and the photo printing on Kodak paper is great. The cost of the ink is a very important advantage. I have printed a number of photos and have not made a dent in the ink cartages. I have had Epson HP and Canon printers they have worked well but the durability and the outrageous prices they charge for ink and how fast it disappears when printing photos makes me enjoy the Kodak printer that much more.
I think they could improve their interface software especially for scanning. The Kodak software is very much focused on photo printing. In my opinion the 5500 is is a all in one printer that has the ability to handle home office business functions and in order to fully utilize the printers abilities improvement need to be made in the Kodak software provided.
With that being said the quality and the effective cost of printing makes me believe that I have purchased a printer that I will be able to use for a long time while not being concerned with how much it is costing to print each page."

This is a great printer

"The Kodak perfect picture program included in the software is truely spectacular. You can produce pictures matching the quality of Kodak Labs with little or no effort.
The printing features and fax features are trouble free and work very well. With the cost of the ink for B&W and color being very low this has to be one of the lowest cost methods of producing prints.
In the past I have had problems with Kodak printer software as it was not very compatible with Microsoft, but this time the installation and operability was very smooth.
The features offered are very easy to use and maybe too easy to use as it is easy to look too hard for the features that are already built into the operating system.
You can download the instruction book and if there were one complaint it would be that the instruction book is not provided in hard copy with the printer. There are so many features available on this printer that a hard copy instruction book would be helpful."

So disappointing - FAX problems

"I was introduced to the 5500 sometime in June when I met a Kodak rep. in the Best Buy store where I usually shop. We already had a decent (HP) photo printer, but was tired of paying the high cost of ink cartridges and we needed a fax so this new machine sounded great to me. After checking the reviews online I decided to take the plunge and now wonder if I made the right choice. The first machine gave me problems during the initial setup and Kodak instructed me to return it to Best Buy for an exchange. What a pain, but when I finally got the 2nd one home all seemed to go well until I tried using it with my Kodak Easyshare camera software. After finally getting that resolved, there was a problem getting the fax to work properly - I could send, but it wouldn't receive in the auto mode. I've called Kodak on each occasion and received help, but only after hours on the phone. Bottom line - the fax still doesn't work the way it's suppose to. All the other features of the machine work great, especially the photo quality and, after printing out tons of vacation photos, I'm still on my original color ink cartridge."

WORST PURCHASE EVER!

"DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT! I purchased the Kodak 5500 to replace a Lexmark All in One that used too much ink. The first Kodak unit the power supply failed so did the print head so took it back for replacement. The second unit had the same problem so contacted Kodak who sent a replacement print head which also failed in two days. The printhead is something the consumer installs. After removing the print head it was obvious they had a serious design flaw and you could see the contacts were FRIED! We took the unit back and got our money back! Two wasted trips at 150 miles per trip!
KODAK HAS A SERIOUS DESIGN FLAW WITH THIS PRODUCT!"

Unusable as scanner

"Printer itself seems to do ok printing through normal Windows applications but one of the main reasons I bought this model was for document scanning.
I have tried to install the kodak provided software several times. Every time it says the software installed correctly. When I try to use the scan feature throught the kodak software it gives a program exception and dies.
Kodak Support does not answer emails. So far this product is unusable for my primary purpose."
