What's great about it: Very Good Sound Quality and Feature Set
What's not so great: Manual a little fuzzy to understand in a few areas..
I bought this unit to replace an aging receiver used to power my home theater system. After doing some research online I found this unit and then made a trip to a Best Buy to make my purchase.
I was VERY pleased once I had it home and installed in the system. The sound quality is very nice from all of the inputs including the built in FM tuner. I live in a rural area yet the tuner with the supplied FM antenna has no trouble at all bringing in lots of stations with clarity and definition.
The automatic setup utility worked great too all using the supplied microphone mounted on a tripod at the listening position. I ran it several times and just for fun I tested it once by reversing the phase on one of the rear speakers. It caught this right away and notified me of the wiring error.
The built in DSP is a mixed bag. I like some of them like the enhancer which is designed for use when playing back compressed audio or other sources which are not as high of quality, FM radio, cassette etc. When set to the lower setting this seems to work well much like a BBE Sonic Maximizer where it brings out some harmonic content and gives the sound more life. The other ones, Hall, Jazz, Pop/Rock I guess might be good in a room that's really dead but I tended to think they were a little heavy and not suited to my listening environment. To me they have little usefulness.
The Dolby Digital, DTS and Prologic decoding all works well and sounds excellent.
The controls are intuitive including those found on the remote. This is the first remote I've managed to find which is able to control ALL of my components including a 15 year old Optimus VCR. It can control my TV and the DVD player without problems even though every component is a different brand and none are from Yamaha. A+ in this area.
All in all there's not much difference that I can see between this the 461 and the lower 361 model. This one does have onscreen menus which is a nice feature as well as S-Video switching. If you don't need this you can save about $100 by going with the 361.
Fit and finish and overall quality seems to be very high and everything you'd expect from Yamaha.
As the main audio component of a modest home theater setup I highly recommend this unit. It sounds great and it does a lot for a very modest price driving my little home theater speakers with authority. My previous receiver sounded ok for movies but lousy for audio this Yamaha changes all of that for the better.

What's great about it: Clean, crisp output of audio. Easy i-Pod connectivity. Lots of manual adjustments can be made if desired.
What's not so great: No HDMI connection if needed.
This Yamaha unit is replacing an older Sony receiver. Even though it's the same wattage output (500W total), the difference in clean audio power and clarity is stunning. My speakers seem "alive" again.
Easy to use with optional i-Pod docking station....very convienent for parties. The FM radio stations even come in with extreme clarity - I've had people ask what CD I was playing. They were surprised that it was actually an FM station.
Overall, a very good product at this price point.

I purchased this receiver to replace my aging Sony STR-DE675. (While I was at it, I also replaced all of my speakers, my sub, my DVD player and my TV.) I am very pleased with the Yamaha receiver. It does not support HDMI, but who cares? I believe this is part of what keeps the cost of this unit so reasonable, and all of my research indicates that optical connections are still best for audio anyway. I use HDMI from my DVD player and my cable box to my TV for the video signal, but use optical lines from my DVD player and cable box to my Yamaha receiver for audio signals and get the best of both worlds. The Yamaha was simple to set up, performs very well, and is an outstanding value. I highly recommend it.
