I am old school and miss the bass that the older integrated amps gave. Hoped this unit would keep up for stereo sound, but I am disappointed. Probably is good for a unit built after the 70's though and compares well to other amps currently available. Does a good job for surround sound, except the manual gives little help in how to maintain the discrete 5.1 (or 7.1) surround signal. For example, does the HDMI cable carry the 5.1 signal from the DVR or do you need to use optical, or which is better? I was told by the salespeople that this is just an HDMI pass through and to use optical, but the receiver acts like the audio signal is coming through the HDMI. I understand the newer version of this amp has more true HDMI switching and even upconverting for DVD and VCR sources. Likely worth the extra cost. This receiver likely does a good job, but the manual does not give answers to how to set it up to maintain the best signal and a true discrete channel separation from the source. (One hint, make sure you have and install an S-video cable in addition to the HDMI. Otherwise, can't set the unit up as the on screen menu does not use the HDMI.) Also very inconvenient to use when switching from various sources to get the best sound.
What's great about it: HDMI is nice.
What's not so great: Very poor manual, not accurate information on decoders

Sounds Killer !!!....has everything that you need, I find the "7-CH Enhancer" Setting Sounds the best...I had this Yamaha upgraded with the Klipsch Quintet III Series and Subwoofer....and the Sound is unbeleivable...Why go spend $60 or so for the Theatre, when you got a Theatre Sound at your own House!!!!
What's great about it: Looks Great, Variable Settings and HDMI Inputs
What's not so great: None

I've had a Pioneer 5.1 digital av receiver for 6 years, and it was a great amp for me but it was time to upgrade due to high-def. I purchased a new pioneer 7.1-ch. receiver brought it home set it up, calibrated it, and to my dismay, no HDMI output which defeated the purpose of upgrading, so I returned it for this amp. My first impression was wow, the sound on this was so bright and powerful compared to the flat sound of my previous pioneer. The Dolby Digital-ES and DTS-ES is wonderful but the best sound comes from the 192khz/24bit PCM audio from my PS3. I found some of the preset audio "scene" settings can be confusing, so I just avoid them altogether. Teamed up with a 50" samsung plasma, Playstation 3, Klipsch Quintet III w/ JBL 12" sub who needs to go to the theater..... Not I !!!!
What's great about it: 7.1 channel audio, HDMI audio, inputs-a-plenty
What's not so great: Amateurs beware

Great receiver with gobs of power, outperforms my Onkyo 602 hands down. Pre Outs for adding an external power amp and all the DSP's you would ever need, great stereo as well. This is my fifth Yamaha I have owned and from a reliability standpoint I don't think they can be beat.
What's great about it: Power, Pre Outs, Many DSP's

This is the first receiver I have bought in 15 years. As I tend to keep my purchases for a long time, I try to look forward when making the purchases, while staying within my budget. This receiver allowed me to do that.
I am still adding pieces to my home theater as the budget allows, so I have not seen everything that this receiver can do, but what I was looking for when buying it was numerous connections and connection types. I needed the receiver to be as to be as compatible with what I already own as with what I hope to own in the future. I am very pleased in that regard.
One feature that I wanted in whatever receiver I purchased was multi-zone capability, so that I can listen to two different inputs in different rooms at the same time. I am only using a 5.1 setup right now, with plans to add the last two speakers in the future, but what I am hearing so far is fantastic in my small-to-medium sized living room.
I put a lot of time into the researching of brands and was very impressed with customer reviews and track record of Yamaha receivers I found online. This receiver gave me all of the features I was looking for within the price range I had in mind. I have been very pleased and would recommend this receiver to anyone looking for the same thing.
What's great about it: Multi-zone, numerous connections
What's not so great: None so far

I bought this unit as I have been a long-time beleiver of the very high quality of Yamaha products - both build as well as sound quality. I was replacing an aging Yamaha natural sound pre-amp and one of the early Yamaha sound field processors. This unit appealed to me because it would still allow me to bi-amp my large main JBL speakers using my seperate HK amps and electronic x-over using a pre-out connection - but still had plenty of reserve power for my other surround speakers - also JBL's. My main frustration with this unit was the owners manual. I consider myself to be somewhat of an audiophile, but this unit was a source of major frustration for SEVERAL days. I made several calls to Yamaha for tech assistance as well as BB to get this to finally operate in a Dolby PL2X format. I had a heck of a time interfacing my Panasonic Blue Ray and Toshiba HD units. There is no mention in the manual about checking your audio out options on your DVD players to match and interface properly with this unit. I literally spent hours and hours and hours trying to figure out my issues. The tech support at Yamaha was not much help and sometimes contradictory. The best info I received was from the Magnolia manager at my local BB store who (at least) got me exploring down the right path. I FINALLY got the two units to interface and am enjoying my concert videos in 7.1 stereo which sounds incredible as well as my movies in 7.1 Dolby PL2X. Now that its set up - its easy to operate and switch back and forth from source to source. The 4 "scene" functions are a bit confusing to me - but I have found leaving it on "scene 1" and rotating my input source from the Blue ray to the HD Player gets me where I need to go. I gave it 4 stars only because it was so difficult to set-up. Otherwise, it's a stellar performer. If I have to do this agian in a few years, I'll call the Geek Squad to have them install and figure it out. My time spent to set this up was extreme and my frustration factor was off-the-chart.
What's great about it: Cost to Features is outstanding
What's not so great: Owners manual is HORRIBLE!!!!

"7CH ENHANCER" setting combined w/ Dolby Digital Decoding when watching DVD's is F A B U L O U S! Better than the theater. Picked up this baby at steal of a price at BB as open box. More than adequately powers all 4 of my Wharfedale Pacific towers, pwrd Sub and FR+R Ctrs. I tell ya: with the volume turned up to -15b's is TOO LOUD proving 90W/ch at .06% THD is more than sufficient. You couldn't use anymore power in a home theater setting unless your home is an auditorium. Can't wait to use video upconversion feature on my component connected Xbox360, DVD-R to upconvert to 1080p thru HDMI - SWEET!
GREAT ADDITION TO MY SYSTEM!
What's great about it: 7.1CH GREAT CLEAN POWER, MANY DSP SETTINGS

I went to BB to find a all in one system. Wife said lets do this right, get a piece at a time. Of course had to stay in budget to. Already had the monitor Sony KDF-55XS955, with HD programing and Sony DVP-NS75H CD/DVD Player. With the Yamaha, and now with the Klipsch Quintet SL surround I just purchased from BB sounds fantastic! Oh yes, free subwoofer Klipsch powered 12 now with these speakers! (sweet deal) Highly recommend this receiver 2 months on it, no problems

I love this receiver for one feature only. I have a set of outdoor speakers and I can play for example radio outside while playing a movie inside in my theater room because the receiver has a zone 2 feature. It plays two difference sources in two different locations at the same time

My last receiver was a Sony STR-DA90ESG and I loved it. This recevier was half the price, had roughly the same sound quality and many more options. Obviously technology has advanced considerably in the last decade, but this is one nice unit. I don't necessarily agree with others who've stated it's tough to set up, but I can understand getting frustrated. Nonetheless, I am very satisfied with my purchase.
What's great about it: Great value, awesome sound
What's not so great: Display from the 90's

I replaced a lightning-damaged Yamaha 592 model with this receiver. After a few months, I am quite satisfied. Paired with Infinity speakers and a Yamaha subwoofer, this unit provides more sound than I need for my mid-sized living room; I have never max'ed out the volume. Provides every connection I could possibly need. The Ipod dock is great - nice to be able to control the Ipod from across the room with the remote and on-TV screen menu. It does take some extra cabling to be able to watch TV while listening to the Ipod. I like the sound and the fact that it will calibrate itself to your room. The remote is full featured and does a good job of controlling other components (I use it for CD, DVD, TV and HD DirectTV.) Only negative is that the volume adjust is not as responsive as the old unit. Also, be aware that it does not like to mix and match HDMI and non-HDMI connections.
What's great about it: Good sound, plentiful connections

I love my Yamaha!!!
Alot of connections on the back so I can hook all my equipment up! HDMI, component, composite, it has it all.
I have my PS3 hooked up through HDMI, looks and sound great!!! Watching Movies is like being there in the movie itself with that 7.1 surround. The automatic set up with the microphone that is included is cool, it makes all kinds of neat noises and sets up all the volume levels for all your speakers. Even the remote goes beyond its duties by controlling most other inputs like dvd players and the TV too. If I could change anything it would be having more scene presets, 4 is not enough, but at least it has them. Just push a scene preset button once it is set up, and it adjusts all the inputs and sound options and other stuff. too cool.
Yamaha should get rid of the XM feature and switch to Sirus instead IMO XM sucks. See my other reveiws under XM prepaid cards and Mini Tuner.
What's great about it: many connections on the back
What's not so great: could use more scene presets

I purchased this reciever for my main 5.1 setup with JBL speakers. In Best Buy I tried out the different recievers and most sounded too extreme either bass or treble. The Yamaha sounded well balanced and had an acounstic type tone to it which sounded nice. If they Harmon Kardon was available I would have purchased that, but this is easy to use and still sounds great.
What's great about it: Has a woodsy natural tone
What's not so great: may not be as dynamic as others

I am a tech savy person, however this was the first reciever that I have ever purchased that was not a system in a box. Set up was confusing and took sometime to figure out, you have to hook up a s-video or a/v cables to it to see the menu on your tv. Once there it is a breese, but the manual is also very hard to figure out until you get the hang of it. Other then that it is GREAT!!!
We have a samsung hdtv, ps3, 360, wii and blu ray movies come with the 7.1 surround sound and with this it feels like you are in the movie theater. With a nice speaker set this will enhance anyones home theater setup. For the money and value I looked around for a while, but this one for the value is the best. 7.1 surround and enough hdmi, componet and optical inputs to last for a lot of electronic years!
What's great about it: Quality, Price and Design
What's not so great: Ease of setup

I was so happy with my Yamaha reciever, the sound was so clean and realistic.
I'm not sure why it quit working but I wasn't too worried, I had the extended warrenty from Best Buy and it had only been a few months since my purchase. My experience with the Best Buy dealer was terrible.

I purchased this item about a month and a half ago when puting together a home theater and up till now I am still finding new things on it that I need to set up. It is great however and the fact that EVERYTHING can plug in and play through it even video is great. Just wish they would have made it easier to set up right out of the box, Like plug and play. But if given the chance I would buy it again.

I bought this receiver and it does the job, but not the most exciting. The display is plain manual is quite complex. I did have issues with sound from my TV as well. When the station would change from commercials to shows or vise versa, the sound would cut out on some. The television itself would have sound, but the receiver had none. I took it back and got a Harmon/Kardon (AVR-247)for the same price and I feel it blows this one away. It has a much more modern look and is much more user friendly.
What's great about it: Quality
What's not so great: Not User Friendly
