Decent Sound, Bad DVD Player03/05/2008
By MADDOG6154from Oceanside, CA
What's great about it: Decent Sound Quality What's not so great: DVD player is faulty
"I purchased this item and ran wires, mounted speakers, and even watched a movie on it. I was thrilled to show it off to my wife when she got home from work. Lo and behold, the DVD player wouldn't read my disc...even after numerous troubleshooting attempts. This was not a burned disc... just a regular DVD. This system got returned the same day, and I was given a replacement. This replacement system (same exact model) lasted approximately three(3) months and the same problem happened with the DVD player. I returned it for a refund and decided to go with a Sony instead. I do need to mention that I was somewhat pleased with the sound that the system put out for the money. However, the sub was a little weak for my taste."

What's great about it: Cheap What's not so great: Everything
"I recieved this for Christmas and had to return the first one because it made an ear wrenching high pitched noise when playing a CD. I had to return the second one because the sound card blew for no apparent reason the day after I hooked it up. The third one has since stopped playing DVDs and CDs altogether. I guess you get what you pay for."

AWESOME Sound Quality; CHEAP price02/14/2008
By mugmugmugfrom Brick, NJ
What's great about it: Great sound, low price (about $100), easy use/set-up What's not so great: limited functionality of USB port and only 2 AV inputs
"I purchased this product a little more than a month and a half ago and it has been great! After about a week of going back and forth to the store trying to buy it (it was out of stock), I finally got it on sale for about 90 bucks (about 100 with tax). When I got it hooked up and the speakers set up around my room (my room is about 10 ft by 12'), I turned it on and was amazed. The system is quite powerful and really surprised me for the price. Also, the system was really easy to customize some settings and get it working to my enjoyment. ----------------------------------------------------------------- I have tested out all of the features and have some things to say about them. The DVD player is excellent and I have used it primarily for playing music through VCD format. There are only 2 AV input jacks which did become a slight issue for me (3 would have been helpful but it worked out well enough with 2). I currently have my TV hooked up to one of the AV ports (using the suplied RCA cable) and a Playstation 2 in the other. The USB port has seemed to be rather useless to me because both the Apple Ipod (Nano 2GB) and the Microsoft Zune (30 GB) do not function through it. I have tested a Sansa MP3 player as well and it worked though. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Product Includes: 1 DVD player/5.1 Surround Sound System, 5 speakers and 1 passive subwoofer, 1 remote (includes batteries), 1 RCA video/sound/sound cable (male/male ends), 1 AC power cord, full instructions for set-up and usage. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Overall, this is definitely a great starter system that has a low cost and spectacular sound quality. It has made watching movies, playing video games, and just watching TV so much more enjoyable. If you don't want to spend a lot of money, have a small to medium-sized room, and want bang-for-your-buck, then I would suggest that you should buy this product. AWESOME!!!"

Great for Small Space02/14/2008
By Bassett
What's great about it: Price, Home theater good for a bedroom What's not so great: Sound system limited
"This was the best purchase I've ever made in a small home theater system. I was practically broke & having a bummer of a birthday. Was at Best Buy to find myself some DVD with a $50 gift card when I found this theater system. It was an OPEN BOX ITEM marked way down. It helps my birthday is after Xmas. I kept asking if they were sure it would work!! It did. I study film and needed a small system for my bedroom. I wouldn't set this up in a large room if you're used to higher quality or even a digital sound system. The remote allows you to set the volume on each speaker, that's nice. Yeah, but I still like my Panasonic Thrusters ;>), I've dropped the cheap plastic remote a couple of times and it still works. My one complaint for studying is it could be easier to view the film frame by frame or slowly. Thanks Best Buy."

Worth the money, but not much more02/10/2008

What's great about it: price, easy to operate, usb, radio What's not so great: limited number of inputs, no hdmi input/output
"Overall, its a pretty decent system, especially for the price. Its a pretty basic system, nothing spectacular. The sound is pretty good and bass is sufficient. It would be nice if it had some kind of HD input and output, i cant use it with my HD cable or my PS3, but i like the usb input so i can listen to music from a hard drive. if your just looking for a dvd player with surround sound and a couple of inputs then its great for $100, but if your trying to use multiple devices and transfer them through one amp to speakers then i suggest you get something a little more expensive. but overall im satisfied with the performance."

What's great about it: Price
"I've had my home theater system for three weeks and have experienced no problems. The DVD player works fine and the sound is great. The only word of advice for people with older TV's, if your TV doesn't have an audio output jack you will not be able to hear regular TV through the home theater system unless you have a cable converter box or you have a VCR with audio output jacks."

What's great about it: price, easy to install, small and lightweight What's not so great: Back speakers
"i have no problems with with this product other than the fact that the back speakers are too low.the center, subwoofer and front left and right speakers are perfect but whatever volume level i put it at i never notice the back speakers. all i did was replace the back ones with older speakers i had and now its perfect great volume for small-medium sized room"

Excellent Apartment Theater01/24/2008
By mrCanfieldfrom Milwaukee, WI
What's great about it: More than enough power for apartments, bedrooms, etc. What's not so great: Way too short wires for speakers
"I had bought two "theater in a box" systems before so I knew what to expect. This system met what I expected - power levels, ease of set-up, and instant performance. With any of these systems you find three or more selections for sound characteristics. You have to play with them in order to find the sound that suits you and they change with what you are listening to. The reviews that I have seen have mentioned "can't hear the subwoofer". I think that the only reason that might be said is because it 'sounds' like the bass is coming from the surround speakers which it definitely is not. You cannot hear the sub because it has no directionality at all. I hear the sub well. Music from CDs delivers all of the sound that I expected once you select the proper setting. When I tried to crank this system up to it's max level I knew that I would get complaints from neighbors. It sounds super in my apartment at sound levels that I can be comfortable with! The selection of modes that are available on the remote make a major effect on what you hear. The tone settings require some playing with, but that was the case with every "box" setup that I have had. This one is worth keeping. For the price, I will simply give it to someone when I have money to get something more powerfull. Until then, it's a perfect setup."

for the price...fabulous system01/08/2008
By Anonymousfrom blacksburg, va
What's great about it: good overall sound What's not so great: my comcast remote didn't recognize the system
"Before I get into it, I got this system for only 80 dollars, and I am taking that into account when I give five stars. In the grand scheme of things I would give it 3 stars. It doesn't have hdmi inputs or anything but I am using for sound only. I have a PS3 hooked up to my LCD so I don't use the dvd player except for cds. It was super easy to hook up, all the speaker wires are color coded so even the most techno-inept people (myself included) can put it together. The sound is so much better than I had anticipated with an 80 dollar system. The bass isn't booming, but it does have an active sub out if you want to get one later. I have a medium sized living room and the sound it fills it just fine. Watching movies is much better then the tv speakers and playing games like Call of Duty 4 sound great, the explosions are nice and loud. So if you are looking for a 5:1 with pretty good sound for a basement price you can't go wrong."

Good Value for the Money01/07/2008

What's great about it: Easy to set up, sounds decent, variety of inputs. What's not so great: Cheaply made, weak subwoofer - but what do you expect for the price???
"I bought one of these and had to take it back when the very last thing I tested, the built-in DVD player, didn't recognize any kind of disk. I called tech support at Insignia and they were very helpful - basically said it was a bad unit and to take it back to the store. Best Buy promptly took it back and gave me another.
The second unit worked just fine out of the box. I am an electrical engineer, and it is simply amazing to me that you can get this kind of functionality for only $80. I also learned that you should be VERY careful about looking into the details on inexpensive units like this. For example, Circuit City sells a similar unit that has NO inputs for things like your TV, video game, etc. Really! Can you believe it? Anyway, this unit has two auxilliary inputs, a built-in tuner, and DVD player. It even has a powered-subwoofer output in case you have a good subwoofer to use with the unit. Fabulous!
Lots of functions on the remote, and even multiple bass settings for the included (albeit weak) subwoofer. I am an audiophile, and would say that the speakers are absolutely the cheapest thing you could make and still have sound. However, the sound you get is pretty good - especially the mid-range. Not to say you couldn't do better with just about any other speaker - but then again, you'd have to spend about twice as much again for a couple of better speakers than you paid for this entire setup!
Perfectly adequate for an office, dorm room, or medium sized living room. If you are a big-time audiophile and/or have expectations of big, thumping bass, go elsewhere. Otherwise, I suspect you will pat yourself on the back after you set it up an turn it on. Way better than the standard stuff provided with most televisions.
Usually you get what you pay for, but in this case, I am comfortable saying that you get quite a bit more."

Better than I expected for price01/06/2008
By Kammfrom Atlanta, GA
What's great about it: easy to set up, looks good, sounds good What's not so great: Only 200 Watts
"I bought this system the other day and it sounds fine to me. I just wanted something simple that plays dvd's, cd's and has an am/fm tuner. All the sales people told me that it didn't have a tuner, but in fact it does. It may only be 200 Watts, but if you play around with the bass, the surround feature and arrange the speakers properly, then you will get a whole different sound. At first I thought only some of the speakers worked until I changed the surround sound from stereo to movie, then all the speakers were on. If you are looking for something inexpensive, easy to work with and looks nice, then I would recommend going to get this product."

What's great about it: SOund and ease of setup What's not so great: No DTS, no digital input
"I was looking for something to spend a few gift cards on and came across t his system at a great price. I thought, why not? I purchased the item online and picked it up in a local store. My only problem was that the unit i recieved was defective and I did have to exchange it for a new one. The new one I received works fine. The sounds is great for the price and the only slight limitation is the sub, but this can be expected from a passive sub powered by the amp in the unit. I am happy that there is an active sub out though. Hats off to Best Buy and thier new Inisnia house brand. Well done."

Great Product at a Great Price01/03/2008
By azjefffrom Phoenix, AZ
What's great about it: Price, size, color coded speaker wires, performance What's not so great: low wattage, but feel I got more than I paid for!
"I have always wanted a 5.1 surround sound system in my bedroom, but didn't want to spend hundreds of $$$ for this. I have a 37" LCD in my bedroom and was not satisfied with the sound from the TV only. I was reluctant to go with this system after reading several of the reviews. However, I did purchase a Insignia MP3/Video player that was so inexpensive and was thrilled with it, that I decided that I would try this Insignia Home Theater. It was on sale for $79 and I thought it sounded like a bargain. I was right. I hooked it up, with no problems. The speaker wires and contacts are all color coded which is a great idea. The wires on the rear speakers are longer, which they should be, but I still needed to add some wire to them and the sub woofer for proper placement and running the wires beneath my carpet. Placing the subwoofer as close as you can to where you will be viewing I found provided the optimal results. Everything works great! The 30watts per channel is not fantastic, but it's sufficient for my bedroom which is 14x14. I only use the system for the audio, and have hooked it up to the output of my TV. I can not evaluate the performance of the DVD/CD player capability. I additionally purchased a RCA to 8mm cable so I can play my MP3 player through the system. It also works great and gives my bedroom a great stereo sound. I'm thrilled with this system and I that I only spent $79 and have a home theater experience now in my bedroom."

What's great about it: Great sound, built in dvd, outstanding price, easy setup What's not so great: sub is alittle weak
"What can i say? This is a great purchase especially for the money ESPECIALLY when on sale. It was way better than your standard tv speakers and are very clear. These are better than I expected. However, I would only purchase these for a bedroom or small room. I play my xbox 360 using these and i play halo 3. I can hear everything around me i can tell when footsteps are near me and from what direction."
