What's great about it: SDTV Digital Tuner
This machine is a delight for folks who do not subscribe to cable because it will pick up all the regular local channels with a regular roof-top or rabbit-ear antenna system with the added bonus of picking up the digital broadcast channels that are available over-the-air for free from PBS, and the major networks.
So, even if you have cable, you can connect both it and an antenna and switch back and forth between the two sources with the press of a button.
Excellent picture either way and Dolby Digital 2.0 audio recording to boot.
I would recommend this to a friend!

What's great about it: lots of features and extremely easy to use
What's not so great: Doesn't record from T.V.
I picked this recorder up for my wife as a gift. I was amazed by the simplicity of the hook up and the ability to record instantly. (We were hooked up and recording in under 5 min.) It is easy switching between HD channels, records well off of VHS and as-well as other DVD Players with the push of one button. I have already recomended this recorder to my family and friends.
I would recommend this to a friend!

What's great about it: Appearance, Installation Ease
What's not so great: Copy Protection, Timer, Recording pretty much anything, Digital Tuner Doesn't Work
Where to begin!
The Philips DVDR3505 Looks decent, boasts a ton of features, and is easy to hook up.
In fact, it's insanely simple to hook up with the supplied instructions!
Just don't expect anything to happen after you get it hooked up. The copy protection doesn't let you record ANYTHING! No recording direct from tv or Satelite. No recording from a VHS, and no recording from a Camcorder.
No matter what I tried, I recieved an error message stating that the program is copy protected, and can not be recorded in +VR mode.
So essentially due to copy protection, I CAN NOT RECORD WITH THIS DVD RECORDER!
Kinda defeats the real purpose of actually purchasing the machine now, doesn't it?
Moving on...........
The Timer Recording DOES NOT execute, and gives no reason or error code. It Simply Does NOT work.
Once More..........
The Digital TV Tuner DOES NOT pick up any channels. Automatically or Manually, there's nothing; even though I do live in an area that does have DTV Channels available.
Philips web and phone support was nothing short of completely worthless and non-existant.
I've had the DVDR3505 hooked up a total of 48 hours and spent a large majority of my weekend trying to get it to work to no avail.
Considering this is the second Philips DVDR that has done this (Same issues with the other) it's going back.
I can not in good faith recommend the DVDR3505 to anyone. It simply DOES NOT WORK!
The copy protection issues make it unusable. It's even too big for a paper weight.
Don't buy this one!!!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

What's great about it: Tons of featurs
What's not so great: read on
Accepts almost all media types, has lots of features, DIVX, HDMI with good upscaling picture quality, and the SD channels come in clear.
This recorder does have an integrated QAM tuner that allows free reception of unscrambled digital programming sent "in the clear" by your cable provider. The instruction manual does not state this fact and neither does most websites.
The only down side is that in my area Comcast provides cable service and ABC, CBS, and NBC are on channels 86-431, 85-433, and 86-432.
This recorder's tuner only accepts two digits of the sub channel number. Therefore if you have three digits like in my area you have no chance of watching or recording any of those stations.
The digital channels I am able to get do come in clearly and picture quality is an A+ on recordings. If you don't have this problem in your neighbourhood then this is a great recorder for the price.
I did end up returning this unit for the Panasonic DMREZ27K because of the problem with the two digit sub-channel.
I would recommend this to a friend!

This is a pretty good recorder.
What I like about it:
1. HDMI output.
2. Vacuum fluorescent display. Many brands have switched to the cheaper LED outside display.
3. The SDTV digital tuner is outstanding! You can switch between analog or digital with a button unlike others where changing channels involves going through both analog and digital together.
4. Records closed captioning. There are two types of captioning with this model, the internal one and one that gets displayed via the TV. It won't capture the digital captions but will the analog. In other words, you will see two sets of captions if you set both the recorder and TV on captions. Be sure to turn one of them off. The recorder won't record it's internal captions via digital recording. However, if you set the TV on cc, you can still see the "normal" closed captioning after making a digital TV recording.
5. This plays my homemade recordings that I made with my two other DVD recorders flawlessly without hiccups (as cheap players will do).
6. Silver/black case. Matches well with other black or silver equipment.
What I didn't like about it:
1. Does not record widescreen! I tested it and it states that it won't recorde widescreen in the manual. If you set the settings to widescreen, it records with the sides mashed together in 4x3. If you set it to 4x3, you will record with the black bands top and bottom. If you record pan&scan, it will record pan&scan and you will lose the right and left sides. I did some research and the new Panansonic w/SDTV only records 4x3 unless it is recorded in DVD-RAM (not compatible with many players).
2. The record quality did not beat my Panasonic recorder.
3. The types of recommended DVDs are limited per the manual. My Panasonic took any DVD that I put in.
I would recommend this recorder. The workings looks very much like the Funai line of recorders (could be a rebadged recorder). It has a i-link DV input. The SDTV tuner is excellent (note: it is not HDTV).
I would recommend this to a friend!
