Good system

What's great about it: Good sound, good looks, good price
"Great system. Really easy to set up, sound is very good. Picture and sound on DVD's is good with the regular AV hookups that come with the unit, and excellent if you splash out and get an HDMI cable too.
A few notes:
The display is on the top of the unit, so if you want to use the really neat touchpad feature you'll have to have a space to put it where the top can be displayed and easily accessed. There is no display on the front - in the picture you are actually seeing the top of the DVD player. This is not a major problem in my opinion though.
It is really easy to connect this up to a cable box or other receiver so that you can hear your regular cable or tv channels through these speakers. However, as another reviewer noted, the manual ignores this option. To do this, just get a regular audio cable (one of the ones with a red and white jack on either side) and then plug one end into your cable box and the other into the subwoofer. Then select 'Aux' under 'EZ' on the Home menu of the player. You should be able to hear your cable sound once you've done that.
Also make sure everything is turned off before you begin hooking up the unit to the TV, cable box etc."

What's great about it: Easy Set Up, Great sound for only 2.1 Ch.
What's not so great: Can only view certain menu options on Screen
"This was a very simple sound system to set up. We chose this because we did not want a lot of wires/speakers all over the room. The sound is 1000% better than through the normal television. I highly suggest this for someone that does not want something overly complicated, but with great sound benefits."

Great Surround System for a Bedroom

What's great about it: Easy Set Up! Super Clear Sound /w/ Movies & TV-Dialogue is Clear! Great Design! Looks Cool!
What's not so great: Only one-must be on HDMI Input To View Menus To Change Functions
"I wanted a quality surround sound for my small bedroom without the hassle of putting one together by scratch or 5 speakers out of the box system(don't want to go there!). This fits my needs totally. It was so easy to set up/sounds so clear-checked it with Ratatoulle DVD-awesome!-TV sounds clear-I found everything easy to navigate from the remote control. The only negative is that to view the menu(functions), you must have it on the HDMI input to view. But this is not a deal breaker, I just accept this. I like it sooo much , I want to buy one for my other bedroom.
Also, I don't want to leave my bedroom-just want to watch TV all day with this sound quality. (Using this system with a Toshiba LCD 24' Flatscreen )"

Amazing quality

What's great about it: small,great surround sound,very easy to use,upconverts normal DVDs to 1080i/1080p
What's not so great: not easily expandable
"The LG LFD790 is by far my most favorite 2.1 virtual surround sound system, it has clear sound it's XM satalite ready and upconverts normal dvds to a higher resoultion. I own this and a 5.1 bose surround system and I perfer this one."

Love What It Looks and Sounds Like!

What's not so great: Manual is poorly written. Awkward use.
"I bought a Bose 321 in November and had so many problems with it. (wouldn't play several DVD's, sound blasting out of it at weird times, quality not up to Bose standards, price, etc.) I have been looking for a small unit to replace it and finally found this one.
No problems setting it up - I thought. The FM radio worked (beautifully), the DVD worked (beautifully), the CD worked (beautifully), but I couldn't get the TV to go through the speakers. The manual completely ignores the possibility of a cable box being in the picture....so I more or less guessed about how to hook it up.
I slept on it, still couldn't figure it out and finally called Best Buy on a Sunday. I can only say there were impeccable - excellent - patient. The tech walked me through a couple of things and I finally got it hooked up correctly. He waited on the line with me while I did things and tested them.
Then he explained how to switch back and forth from radio to TV to DVD, etc. (Again the manual was woefully lacking.)
I can't be happier. It absolutely looks gorgeous and it sounds really nice. My room is about 12 X 15 with a wide opening on one side and it still sounds great. It is small and matches my LG TV of course.
The only improvement would be a button to switch easily to the TV instead of having to go to Auxiliary. And, of course, a manual which was written in English first instead of being translated into English.
Great purchase. I'm only giving it a 4 because of the poor manual. And Best Buy rocks!"

"Thank goodness for these reviews! I was ready to box this thing up and take it back to the store until I read some of the reviews. I hooked it up and first got a horrible noise because the unit came on at max volume! Then, when I figured that out (hard to do with no display screen and no "dials"), I could get the CD to play but no sound from the TV. I finally called Best Buy, told them how I had it set up (optical from TV to unit), "Yep, that's right, must have a bad cable or bad unit". WRONG! After reading the reviews I changed the optical to run from my Dish STB to the unit -- voila! Excellent sound for the price. I still can't figure out how to switch back from DVD or CD to the TV without going onto the menu on the TV and switching it back to optical. Very weird. Worst part is that I will never be able to explain to my spouse how to do that so I'll have to make sure I always leave it on Aux/Optical after using it!!"

Great Sound

"We bought this system to get better sound in our small family room from our analog tv and also needed a new dvd/cd player/tuner. The setup was not too bad, but it took a while to figure out that you have to connect cables from your cable box to the aux-in on the subwoofer to get audio from tv shows. There is a small display screen on top of the unit that shows the status of the unit but not the menu so you have to go into video mode on the tv to see the menu. You also have to use the menu to hear the aux sound from the tv. That's a little tedious. I haven't figured out how to do it from the remote and the manual is no help. Overall the manual explains setup pretty well but it is not complete when it comes to functions.
The first night I set it up I was playing around with the remote and the menu stopped working. It wouldn't come up at all when the tv was in video mode. After a quick google search I found that the unit was in demo mode and if you hold the stop button on the front of the unit for at least 10 seconds the menu would come back. That worked for me. Then the next morning I was trying to eject a dvd and the display kept saying "eject lock". This time a google search didn't help but I held down that stop button again and eject lock turned off.
So when it works it sounds great. If you're not a very technical person, pick a different unit."

"The major flaw it has is that it must be hooked up to a TV. I bought it as a small system for my room with the plan to use it with a tv later. But it has no usable screen on the system. You must have it hooked up to a tv to use the menu and even switch between functions. Otherwise you must memorize the order of pushing the menu button. Very inconvenient since I just use it for my ipod and cd player. It sounds good and great for the money, but just that one thing is a major flaw. I've never seen a system that doesn't have it's own display for set up."

Bad Setup for Wall TV above Fireplace

What's not so great: Most input/outputs on woofer not dvd/receiver. Awkward setup...
"The system looks awesome and is a good price. However, we bought it to use with a wall lcd above fireplace. Problem is most of the input/outputs are on woofer which we wanted to set on the floor. As a results lots of cords are running up and down the wall. Looks bad. The cord from the woofer to the receiver (included) is very thick and black. Not very appealing to the eye. We are returning it for a system that has input/outputs on the receiver/dvd which we are going to set on the mantle along with the 2 speakers. This way the only cords running down the wall to the woofer will be 1 clear wire to the woofer...."

"My wife and I didn't want the 5.1 mess of speakers everywhere, but wanted to be able to hear the conversations as well as the sound effects. This LG system delivered! It sounds great, especailly on the XTS sound setting. We listened to the Bose 2.1 system and it caused the sound effects to drown out the conversations. The only problem, with the LG, is the instructions did not cover hooking Directv to the unit. I had to call LG, which took a while, but finally got a very nice and professional rep, she said you have to hook the Directv convertor to the sub woofer with an audio cable and select Aux on the settings. My wife is very picky about her entertainment sound, but loves this system!"

"Purchased for main living area where we didn't what a stereo system taking up room and being obvious. Intent was to combine with a wireless media center (to play the music on a computer located upstairs) and for FM & XM Radio. Everything went together easily and worked right away. Combined with the D-Link DSM-520 Wirelesss Media Center and a small 15 inch Insignia TV. This is GREAT stuff! Highly recommend."

"I just received this LG for a X-mas present and I couldn't have been any happier! This goes perfect with my plasma TV (which is also a LG), and the sound quality is excellent. I'm still playing around with it but I was able to set this up in minutes. It's small, compact design was easy to set up in my TV unit. I was even able to hook up my iPod in no time (you need additional wiring for that). It has everything I need, which is great sound quality and ability to play my DVDs/CDs. Your DVDs are going to look great as well (HDMI available). Now, I'm no expert on home theatre systems, which is why I wanted to get an all in one system with out ever having to buy anything a la carte. This is a great product; you will not be disappointed. It recieved the red dot design award for 2007. Very Happy with it!"

"I love this. Went and was really wanting to get BOSE 321 system. But for the price I decided to check this out. Now obviously it does not sound as good as the BOSE but then again it is WAY cheaper. It does however sound nice and in virtual mode does beat out many 5.1 systems. The HDMI conection is awesome with my 47 LCD 1080p. I am very happy with that look. I was curious if I would even be able to tell a difference between this and my old progressive scan DVD and .. yup big as daylight difference. So... unless you have change to spare to buy the BOSE... get this. You will enjoy it."

"All of the connections are on the Sub unit, so instead of all the wires going from one component to the next on shelves - they all have to go over to the sub (a big problem if you want the sub located further away) The sound is pretty bad also. I would recommend a stand-alone receiver and a pair of bookshelf speakers."

"This is a great system with amazing sound quality--I would say that this system sounds better than some of the cheaper 5.1 systems out there! The black ceramic design is beautiful and looks great next to my flat panel LCD TV. Hooking it up with a HDMI cable to 1080i resolution will make your DVD movies look amazing. If you're interested in an elegant system and don't want to bother with setting up 5.1 speakers and running wires all over the place, this is the system for you."

"Out of the box the unit is very easy to setup. Very few cables and very little tweaking needed to get it just right. The on screen menu is used to navigate between Movies, Music, Pictures, XM, and FM. The sound quality is nice but you are very limited in adjustments to the soundscape. Overall it does anything you could ever need a home theater to do and more. The best feature is its design and look."

"I purchased this system a couple of months ago and for the most part I have been very happy with it. I have had some issues with it, however, and that is why I could not give it a perfect 5 rating. A couple of times right when I first bought it, when playing a DVD the screen would just go blue and play an annoying screeching sound. I do not know why, I was playing a new DVD so it was not scratched. However, for some reason it only did that a few times and within the first week (right when I was about to take it in to have it looked at), and it hasn't done it since! The sound quality is amazing for the small speakers and it looks great for any entertainment center. For the price, I could not have made a better decision for my new TV."
