Major positives and minor negatives   08/09/2008
By jetlite

"Positives
+Full frame sensor: allows me to acheive true wide angle photographs with no crop factor
+Image size: I have had a number of large (20"x30") prints made and the results are flawless
+Ability to shoot in RAW: While the files are huge (12MB+ each), the information and options this format provides has really expanded my technical and creative abilities.
+Build quality: While I haven't tried the true Canon Pro series (1 series), the 5D is pleasantly sturdy and feels solid in my hands. I can see how some might find it too heavy, especially with an L series lens.

Negatives-
-Lens requirements: Because of the full frame sensor, the 5D brings out the best (and worst) out of the corners and edges of your lenses. You will be able to tell a lesser quality lens more easily on the 5D than on a cropped sensor lens. The obvious negative is that better lenses like the L-series are generally much more expensive ($600+)
-No flash: Not a big deal to me but I've noticed that people are surprised when they see the 5D has no flash. This doesn't matter that much since built in flashes are rarely useful in most situations.
-Dust in sensor: Make sure you get a good sensor cleaning kit shortly after getting the 5D. There are steps you can take to minimize dust like changing lenses rarely and always indoors but you will need to clean the sensor every few months depending on use. To test if you need to clean (on any DSLR), put the camera on a tripod or flat surface, point it at a white wall , focus, and shoot with a long exposure and small aperture (5+ seconds and f/16 or smaller). If there is any junk on your sensor you should see it."

One of the best SLRs today   07/20/2008
By Moti

What's great about it: Excellent image quality
What's not so great: None

"I originally bought this camera for its full frame sensor. I needed a camera that can shoot at high ISO with little noise. And indeed, this camera can really shoot in low light conditions while maintaining a very low noise.
Overall picture quality is superb, auto focus is very quick and precise and shutter lag is minimal.
If you can afford it, go for the full frame sensor. It will provide you with excellent picture quality in every aspect: low noise, color saturation, ability to cope with very bright situations, etc.
Thanks to the full frame, the accompanying 24-105 is an excellent all-round lens that will allow you anything from a decent wide-angle (no cropping, remember? - it is a full frame) to a medium tele-photo. As this lens is from the L series, it matches the camera top notch quality with the glass used in this type of lenses.
You will enjoy every moment of using this camera."

What's great about it: Full Frame, Good Build, Fits well in hand.
What's not so great: "slow" frame rate [3.0] not weather sealed.

"So it is a little older technology, but what can you say? I got this a year and a half ago and just love it. Put a decent lens to it [it can't take crop lens] and unbelievable results come out. the iso is great, you can put it all the way to 800/1600 and barely get any noise. This isn't too cheap, but currently [07-20-08] it should go for 2000 and thats great, you're getting really pro quality stuff at this price! the picture along with this review doesn't do it justice, i didn't have time to broswse, but you can see it took a sharp picture with just candlelight!"

Excellent quality and resolution   02/10/2008
By NCPhotoBug from NC

What's great about it: Versatile, High ISO w/ less noise, High MegaPixel resolution
What's not so great: None

"I've used the Canon 5D for 10 months now. No complaints. Excellent quality even when cropping the image significantly. High ISO settings allow for dim light shooting w/o flash and little noise. Easy to clean full size sensor. Use Sensor Swipe with Eclipse solution. The included zoom lens has lots of versatility. Fast auto focus, and image stabilizer for hand-held slow shutter speeds. Recommend the 580 flash for spectacular results."

Full size w/o 1ds weight   09/13/2007
By pumpkinpony

"Quite similar to the 20D it was based on with controls that are logically placed and easy to use. Comfortable to hold and weight is tolerable for long periods of shooting. Battery lasts for multiple days of continuous shooting. Sturdy build and feels more "professional" than the Rebel series. Full frame sensor produces bright, clear, contrasty images. Have blown images up as large at 20x24 with amazing detail. Depth of field preview button sticks out further than other canon models and is much easier to use. Love this camera and look forward to using it for many years based on previous experience with canon products!"

Pricey but worth every penny   09/11/2007
By photopro from San Diego, CA

"This camera really shines with big telephoto lenses. You can crop down on a small area and still end up with a tack sharp image. I use this body for my long lens photos at NHRA drag racing events. It's not quite as fast on multiple shots as my 30D, but still good. The high-res makes up for the slower speed. If you need the high-res feature, you will find the 5D well worth the money."

Excellent for advanced Amatuers   08/28/2007
By Papa2Sweet from Youngstown, OH

"I have had this camera for about 2 1/2 years now and I must say that it has been my best investment so far. I mainly shoot weddings and senior pictures and I have been very pleased with the results of this camera. I owned the 10D before upgrading to the 5D and what a difference. The 5D allows you to use higher ISO without the noise. That was the problem with the 10D. Once you were at ISO 400 or higher you would start to get noise in your photos. Not with the 5D. I have shoot inside of churches with the ISO as high as 1600 with great results. If you combine the 5D with any of Canon's L glass, you should get fantastic results. The only negative thing I have to say about this camera is that it is a magnet for dust on the sensor. Also I have tried occasionally to shoot sports (high school) with this camera and the results were not so good. I know a lot is opperator error, because I don't know much about shooting sports. Remember this review is not coming from a Pro, but a serious amatuer wanting to become a Pro. Don't hesitate to buy this Camera."
