What's great about it: Graphics, Horror What's not so great: Gameplay, short story, not intense
"As everybody knows, game-play is the key element in making a game an icon. Like Halo, or the COD'S. this game lacked the 'INTENSE' game-play. It seemed casual. I would rent this game first, or borrow it from a friend. Be cautious!"

What's great about it: Awesome Darkness abilities What's not so great: A lot of load time, some entertaining though
"The Darkness seems to be a little underrated (not here, people that play it like it) on a lot of sites. I got The Darkness and loved every minute of it. I would say the game is a little short and easy, but I play a lot of FPS games and I played it on normal where I normally play on hard. So I suggest making the game more challenging by playing on hard. The load time is kind of annoying because there is a load screen before every new area (or going back into an old one) in the beginning it isn't bad, but once you start helping people and running from this place to that it gets annoying. There are load screens where Jackie (the main character) talks or plays with his guns, very interesting way of doing the loads. I guess as an actual review though, the darkness is based on a comic book of the same name where you play as Jackie, the game starts on your 21st birthday and so does "The Darkness" a demon hiding inside you waiting to come out. You use its powers while running away from and to your Uncle who is now trying to have you killed. Achievements are decent. I got more then half my first time through and a lot of the rest are multiplayer achievements (which although the multiplayer is fun, no one seems to play so it's hard to find a match). All in all I think a great buy."

Frightenly Good02/06/2008

What's great about it: Graphics, Storyline, Atmosphere, Controls What's not so great: Sometimes Confusing
"The Darkness is based on the graphic novel of the same name. You take the role of Jackie Estacado, who, at the age of 21 has just "inherited" dark supernatural powers. As the protagonist, you are thrust into a symbiotic relationship with a supernatural being know as The Darkness.
While the controls of this game are easy to pick up and learn, they are the same as most other first person shooters, it can become quite hectic with a lot of enemies on screen at once and the targeting can be a little difficult at times. This doesn't detract very much from the overall experience.
The graphics, storyline, and atmosphere are what makes this an excellent game for any Xbox360 owner who enjoys first person shooters and horror. The end will leave you wanting more.
The only significant complaint I have with this game is the tendancy of the games design to make it difficult to know where to go next. This could just be my problem, but I think the designers could have made it a little more obvious in some areas where the player must proceed to next."

What's great about it: Amazing Approach. Fun to play. Darkness Powers What's not so great: Can Be frustraiting [going from one place to another].
"I did have fun playing this game, but at time, it was really frustrating. The A.I. would sometimes not co-operate with you, they would totally ignore you, and that sort of thing. On the other hand, the powers that you have are just so awesome to play with. I had a blast messing around and playing with these powers."

Despite sketchy storyline, great FPS game!10/18/2007
By vespa55from Hercules, CA
What's great about it: Your Dark Powers come in handy in most situations. Aiming weapons is made very easy What's not so great: Far fetched storyline. Repetitive/annoying monologues from Jackie everytime you take the subway or cut to a new scene.
"This FPS is very interesting in which you are literally in conflict with yourself and "the Darkness" which has control over you. The storyline is little bit far fetched and at times - rather corny - but the feel of the game is spooky and very cool considering that the game environment is very eerie and believable and accurate. You'll be needing to go back and forth via subway to take on different tasks and to go after Shrote and Paulie, but other than that, the gameplay is fairly easy on "Casual". Aiming is assisted by the game itself. If there is any disappointments in this game, it would be the storyline and the constant monologues Jackie (main character) gives each time you take the subway or cut to a new scene to wreak havoc. Other than that, passing the game and the final ending (no spoiler here) was disappointing. Still, this game makes for an interesting FPS game."

Good game for FPS players10/11/2007
By holdolfrom Virginia
What's great about it: Story, Graphics What's not so great: Loading Time, Glitches
"Overall, I felt this game was good. The story and the use of the different demon powers was entertaining. The graphics were above par. It was nice to have the mini objectives in the game in order to break up the story. Also, the special up-close kill moves were a nice touch. The two major problems with this game is character control issues and annoying loading times and images. When trying to move the tentacle around, it can take several tries to get it go where you want and once in awhile it will stop completely and freeze up. The loading screens were entertaining in the beginning; however, after awhile they start to get annoying once they start recycling through the same ones over and over again. After seeing the same scene numerous times, it starts to seem like the loading time are too long for a game on the 360 console."

The Darkness is a fun, different FPS09/16/2007
By dsolditfrom Ohio
"Graphics: Excellent 9/10 The graphics are very well done and they are sharp. The mouth movement when the characters speak is weak, but the attention to most other details is remarkable.
Sound: Great – 8.5/10 You can tell that there is gun fire, and there is something behind you - nice touches for surround sound.
Gameplay: Great – 8.5/10 The gameplay is well done and the physics are fun to play with and there are plenty of variances to keep your interest
Replay Value – Above Average 7/10 This is a great single player campaign game, but the multiplayer was thrown in because it could be.
Overall – 8.5/10 This is a fun game that gives a new spin to the first person shooter genre, though nothing revolutionary, and makes an entertaining and engrossing game. The gameplay brings you in, but it is the weak multiplayer however, is what keeps this game from really shining.
The Darkness from the makers of “The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay” is a first-person shooter where you use the lack of light to your advantage. You play Jackie Estacado, who quickly earns the ability to generate tentacles from his back, and by staying out of the light, you gain powers to dominate the game, and your enemies. You can use your darkness powers to create black holes, take out lights in a stabbing motion, sneak ahead and along walls like a snake to areas you can't reach on foot, pick up and toss around objects, etc. You will want to make sure that you take out the lights in this game as you battle along to make sure you have as much of an advantage as you possibly can.
This is not your average “run and gun” first person shooter. This game has a lot of dialogue and downtime talking to individuals that it feels like Shenmue at times with all the questioning, and there is a descent amount of time that is spent traveling. The semi-open structure allows roaming to ask questions and fight, but the game makes sure to leave enough with clues, tasks, and signage to streamline this game if you wanted to finish it as quick as possible you achievement hunters.
Like Riddick, the main story here won't take you long to get through (it's in the 10-hour range), but because of the game structure, you can spend time getting lost and messing around in the wrong parts of town if you choose, or if you are looking for all the hidden items.
Once you complete the game though, this game lacks replay value due to the very poor multiplayer. The multiplayer structure is simple and the Starbreeze team inadvertently admits that multiplayer shouldn't be taken too seriously, as this mode relies on a gimmick: the ability to shape shift from a human to a Darkling. The multiplayer is fun, but it is not a reason to keep playing the game.
The story on The Darkness, along with the unique first person shooter elements, makes this game definitely worth checking out. It is a polished, sharp, single player game, with a complete ending, and great story line."

A Fantastic FPS from beginning to end09/12/2007
By Sinning
"The Darkness enraptures its players from beginning to end. You play a ex-mob hitman accused of betraying the mob who suddenly becomes aware of a darker power engulfing him.
From the excellent voice acting to the well written script as well this game is a cinematic FPS with high replayability factor.
I would highly recommend The Darkness to fans of Painkiller as well as Condemned: Criminal Origins."

A great game from 2k.09/12/2007
By Glowzinskifrom Glen Burnie, MD
"I liked this game so much. I never beat any of the games I own. I guess I just find other things that take my intrest, but this game I couldn't stop playing. In the game you are a man who is tied into the mob. You start to find strange things happen to you. You find out that it has to do with something an ansestor did in like world war 2. You wisit this place in the game. Well you visit h3ll, and in h3ll there are men still fighting as well as an ansestor of yours. He tells you why the things are happening and how to win against them. I got a real resident evil feel when playing this. I'm not talking about the bad controlls of R.E but the story and the fun. It is like your reading a book or watching a tv show. When your not playing you will think about the game. The voice acting is also very well done. I must say buy this game. Well rent it first, just to make sure you like it. I am sure most people will. However this game is not for kids. There is alot of violence and language. The only thing people might get mad about in this game is movings from location to location. You have to watch cut scenes every time and they are ALLWAYS the same. This is not so bad though because you can hit B after like 10 seconds and skip them."

A Soprano superhero a bit south of heaven08/19/2007
By Drykerfrom Long Beach, California
"Some of the best voice acting I've ever heard in a videogame as well as some of the best "acting" (animation that corresponds with the dialogue ). A good story and superb graphics. The ability to rip the hearts out of your fallen enemies, through the wielding of two fanged eel-like demons that sprout from your body, never gets old. Only complaint, at times I wished there were more people around (enemies or otherwise ) to use my darkness powers on, but I suppose that would allow one to advance their darkness powers too quickly for they are improved through the devouring of hearts. From the highly tally-hoed halls of Starbreeze Studio that brought us the critically acclaimed Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, The Darkness is every bit representative of their talents. One of the best games available for Xbox 360."
