Love it!02/10/2008
By MichaelOnefrom Central NJ
What's great about it: Ease of use What's not so great: The long way
"I am so glad I finally bought a GPS! This unit does exactly what I need...gets me where I'm going. I recommend using it first in an area you are familiar with. The first time I used it, I was not used to the mileage countdown to the next turn and I turned too soon several times. The unit counts down fractions of a mile and then feet until your turn. Once you have this down....no more getting lost! The only problem is that the GPS sometimes sends you "the long way". I tested the unit near my home and it always attempted to put me on a major highway rather than local roads. I can deal with this if it gets me where I need to be."

Better Than Expected02/10/2008
By Lynettefrom Tampa, FL
What's great about it: Very fast and accurate. Gives great advance notice for turns and speaks clearly. Handy size for pedestrian use. What's not so great: Lacks a power cable for recharging at home and also should have a USB cable for downloading.
"This is a great GPS system for the money. Easy to use, clear directions. Great for pedestrian use as well as for the car. Easy to read screen. Very easy to program and very fast. Would want it to include a power cable for recharging at home and a USB cable for dowloading updates."

Pretty good, but not precise02/10/2008
By 1fromoverseasfrom Durham, NC
What's great about it: Relieves a lot of the stress of driving at night in unknown areas What's not so great: Hardly ever gets the exact address right
"I usually get to the latest gadgets with a lot of delay, even though my navigational skills would have argued for buying this earlier. I settled on this model because of the many good reviews, its small size, and price. It was very easy to use from the start (no need to even look at the manual) and I first tried it on places that I knew exactly how to get to. The voice instructions are clear, and it is good to see what streets you are intersecting, given that the lighting where I live is very limited compared to the places in Europe I know. When you disobey the instruction, the unit is generally very fast in recalculating. The main con I found so far is that the civic numbers are often quite off, sometime more than one block wrong -even for places that have not been modified in the last 35 years. Also, but this is hearsay, it seems that updating the maps is rather expensive, which is one of those things about commerce that really annoys me (like when you buy a printer real cheap, but the ink cartridges cost as much as the printer). Overall, I like this unit, and it is easy to carry around in a pocket. I have had it for two weeks, and when I had to go somewhere where I did not know the exact area it made the experience considerably easier."

What's great about it: Easy to use, small size great for travel What's not so great: Smaller screen also means less to see, no case
"This GPS basically does what we need it to. We input the address and it tells us how to get there. No complaints, no problems so far. We have only used it in our home town so far, but bought the small one so we could also travel with it. Since it is a travel size, it would be nice if it came with a case."

BEST Entry Level Unit - by FAR02/10/2008
By YukonEricfrom La Crosse, WI
What's great about it: Superbly easy-to-see-and-read Menus What's not so great: Nothing Significant
"The debate is almost always between the Garmin Nuvi 200 and TomTom One, 3rd Edition. Take it from someone who owns BOTH:
IF PRICE IS NOT AN OBJECT, BUY THE NUVI (TomTom often on sale for $50 less then Nuvi.) HERE ARE THE FACT-BASED REASONS WHY:
1) Nuvi menus SUPERIOR to TomTom - FAR, FAR, FAR more intuitive and easier to use!
2) Nuvi has a separate TRIP DETAIL screen that is SPECTACULAR.
3) Nuvi windshield mount SUPERIOR to TomTom. (Your TomTom WILL fall off your windshield; your TomTom WILL get scratched.)
4) Nuvi is THINNER than fatboy TomTom - easier to hold in your hand and program.
5) Nuvi is sentence case sensitive (it knows which words to capitalize, TomTom does not, forcing you to delete and re-enter any destination name with more than one word - a PAIN in the you-know-what.
The Nuvi is WELL WORTH the extra money over the TomTom"

Good Purchase02/10/2008
By Aimeefrom Boston, MA
What's great about it: gets you to where you need to go What's not so great: hard to follow directions when in the city, has to reload alot
"I find garmin to be very useful, i was very happy with my purchase. As long as I am going to a town not a city the garmin is great. I am the worst when it comes to reading directions so it is preety fantastic that a voice prompts me to turn at a precise time to get to my locations. The only issues I have with garmin is it needs to reload alot, but i do live in the city and go through many tunnels, over passes etc. I really find garmin helpful when my husband and I want to go out to eat and have no idea where. It is awesome that we can grab garmin punch in what kind of food we are craving that night and it will give us options from nearest to the farthest place. I would recommend garmin to my friends, i actually have!"

What's great about it: so easy to use, good directions What's not so great: sometimes confusing, has a hard time correcting spelling errors
"I was a little hesitant to make such a large purchase, but this product is diffinently worth it. I drive a lot and its nice to know that I never have to worry about getting lost again. I also love the all the places that the navi has stored in it already. This product is very easy to use, the voice is clear when giving directions, though sometimes it can be a bit confusing like when exiting from a highway. But once you get use to that it ok. My only real complaint is that navi won't tell you what street you are looking for, only where and when to turn, sometimes making it difficult to figure out where to turn. But overall this is a great product."

Good entry level GPS02/07/2008
By electroniclookerfrom Rockingham NC
What's great about it: Works like it should What's not so great: Could add some minor features
"I am now on my 2nd GPS and so far this one is working out just fine. For 2 weeks now it has taken me to several addresses (house shopping) with no hange ups. I leave my unit on all the time but I have tested it to see how fast it would aquire signals and it does it with in seconds. Granted it has been good weather here so I cannot say how it will react in rainy/ snowy conditions. Every thing is simple to use so memorizing instructions is not needed. For a basic entry level unit to get you from point a to b you cannot go wrong with this one. The only thing I would like to see extra on the unit is the altitude to be displayed on the map screen (if you mark a location it will tell you then how high you are.) Also I would like to see more detailed information on satalite signal strength. Minor issues at best."

Excellent GPS01/28/2008
By j275from VA
What's great about it: Excellent GPS (does what it's supposed to do, and does it well); great/bright screen, excellent mount What's not so great: Would prefer if the auto charger cable could plug into the base, not the GPS unit; battery life not great
"I bought this GPS wanting just that - a basic GPS unit for the car that would calculate routes for me, get me to unknown/unfamiliar addresses easily, and serve as a good map to always have on hand. It performs these tasks well.
It usually takes anywhere from a very fast 5 seconds or so up to a couple of minutes to find the satellites, depending on weather and terrain. But it's always located them, and almost always very quickly. The car mount is very sturdy and well designed. The screen is clear and easily viewable in bright sunlight; night mode is equally nice after dark (background changes from white to black), and when set to "auto" it will change the background from day to night for you when it gets dark.
The preloaded maps (NT 2008, I believe) are very accurate, at least around here, and I have been suprised at the level of detail (dirt roads, jeep trails, private roads, etc). Rerouting is fairly quick if you leave your main route.
I didn't need/want any bells and whistles as on the higher priced models (I don't really care about Bluetooth to my cell phone, viewing pictures, or listening to MP3s on a GPS unit). It would be nice to have the full text-to-speech capability, but again, with the next model up that offers that feature being a good $50-75 more at the time of my purchase, it's just not worth it.
Only two complaints - I would have preferred if the car charger could plug into the base of the unit rather than the unit itself. But this is a minor quirk and may not make any difference to most. Secondly, the battery life is not quite as good as some other models. (Advertised five hours - I can get about 3.5 - 4 hours out of it). But since I rarely need to take it out and put it into another vehicle other than my daily driver, this is not a big issue for me.
If you want a good entry level GPS that does GPS well, and you won't miss the "extras" of the higher priced models, this one is highly recommended."

Great GPS for the price01/23/2008
By ThePimentofrom Midland, TX
What's great about it: 3D/2D view, Favorites, Points of Interest What's not so great: Doesn't come with a USB cable
"This is probably the best GPS unit for the money. It comes with everything you need to get started: car charger, suction cup mount, dash mount.
The one thing I wish it came with was a USB cable to connect it to a computer for updates. It does have a memory card slot for updates that way, so I guess it evens out.
The audio is very loud and can be easily controlled. The maps are very clear and easy to read.
If you're looking for a GPS unit that doesn't offer the useless frills of MP3 playback, etc., but want a barebones unit that still functions great, I suggest this Nuvi200."

By far the best GPS on the market!01/19/2008
By Jonsan2from Atlanta, GA
What's great about it: Easy to use-Long battery life-expandable What's not so great: None!!!!!!
"After several months of extensive research, I purchased the Nuvi 200 from BestBuy. I've owned the unit for several months now and just love it! The accuracy is phenominal and it has great features. Although it doesn't tell you to turn on "Elm Street", it does tell you when to turn and displays the number of feet from the turn as you approach. My battery lasted almost the full 5 hours as advertised and I've never once lost signal travelling the entire Southeast. It is light, compact and easily fits into your shirt or pants pocket. I signed onto the "MyGarmin" page and through their links, downloaded additional points of interest (Poi's) and vehicle icons. If you're looking fo a very reliable unit with more features than you might expect, I highly recommend this unit"

Terrific GPS01/13/2008
By sooziefrom WA
What's great about it: Sound is awesome, Directions Terrific
"Bought this for my dad for Christmas and we went out and test drove it together. I am hearing impaired and my dad had the setting on 80% for sound and I could clearly understand and hear the directions. It was nice that it gave distance to next turn well in advance and also when to turn with adequate time. My dad is absolutely thrilled with it. I think it is the best gift I ever gave him. It is nice that it has many points of interest with phone numbers on there. I am sorry it does not have blue tooth capability though so it could dial the number for a restaurant or whatever. Still an awesome product!!! We did try to go to someones home and it was further out than what the gps has for maps, but the maps it did have were all very accurate and if we passed our turn it would recalcuate and re route us. Awesome product."

Coolest Gadget ever!!!01/12/2008
By TenGfrom Chicago area
What's great about it: Lots of cool features...plenty of nice extras What's not so great: No charger for the wall... somewhat confusing website to purchase accessories and for map updates
"Just received the Nuvi 200 for Christmas. Wasn't expecting a GPS system, so didn't even know much about them. I drive a lot for my job and it's great. Now that I have a Nuvi, I wonder what I ever did without it. Keep learning about more and more cool features everytime I play with it. I've found that the maps are accurate and up to date, and I've had no problems with satellite acquisition. My favorite component (besides from accurate directions) is probably the "points of interest" feature that you can use to locate a starbucks, panera bread, an atm, or whatever your heart desires. You can even program it to pick up your latte near your starting point, en route, or near your destination. Now that's cool!!! Also like the "avoidances" feature... I hate toll roads and I try to avoid them like the plague!!! I like, too, that you can avoid expressways during high traffic times. I also like that you can program it according to whether you're driving, cycling, or walking around the city. I've read that the Nuvi 200 is supposedly "basic" and considered an "entry level" system. I can't even imagine what the more "high tech" versions do, drive for you? I guess if I had any complaints (and I'm really reaching), it would be that you can't charge it in the wall w/o making an extra purchase. And I wish the "avoidance" feature included avoiding routes with railroad tracks (but in Chicago, not even sure if that's possible). And, I think the Garmin website could be a little less confusing. Kind of hard to navigate for making purchases and updating maps (in the future). All and all, it's one of the coolest and most useful gifts I've ever received. I think everyone should have one. Definately worth the money and I can't wait to use it on a long distance trip!!!"

What's great about it: Easy Use What's not so great: Garmin should include a carrying case
"The Garmin nuvi 200 is AWESOME! I find it very easy to use. I keep learning new things about the nuvi 200 all the time. There are so many features with the unit that you don't really know about until you start pushing buttons. The nuvi 200 is a lot of machine for the buck. "I bought a TomTom One just before Christmas but I returned it because I had to reset it every time I shut it off. It worked well other than that. They were out of those so I bought the Garmin instead. Works very well but my street isn't in the maps, it was on the TomTom also poi don't show on the maps as you drive. What's great about it: Easy to use; great price What's not so great: should come with an AC adapter and case
"I got this as a Christmas gift from my wife while in New England visiting relatives. It was great to use it while navigating through the New York City area trying to avoid the next traffic jam. Easy to use. Nice sized screen. Bright display. Basically a plug-in and go device. Better than that other brand everyone was selling for $150. Worth the extra money. Everyone should have one. Beats using Mapquest hands down and even recoginizes my apartment complex."

"I got this GPS for Christmas to use in my truck. I was originally supposed to be getting the $149 TomTom, but Best Buy was so backordered from Christmas that they gave me the Garmin nuvi 200 instead. Not bad! I haven't got to use it very much but it seems to be a great product. Good purchase overall. 5/5 stars. I reccommend this product!"
