Excellent for Regular DVDs   02/10/2008
By PabloofDallas from Dallas, TX

What's great about it: Fast loading, convenient. reliable, great picture
What's not so great: Frequent audio gaps at beginning of shows

"As the owner of both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players, I became frustrated playing regular DVDs, which are still the majority of movies available. The high definition players are slow, quirky and very fussy when it comes to minor scratches so common with rental DVDs. They often require several re-boots before they'll play some DVDs. And they'll quit altogether (usually near the end of the movie!) when they encounter a minor defect.
In frustration, I bought the Pioneer. What a gem! The picture and audio are just as good as the upconversion of the hi-def players. But the unit is so much more convenient. No hassle, just play. The aspect ratio adjustment is convenient for old movies or tv shows on DVD (my Blu-Ray just spreads the square picture, making all the characters fat!). The time remaining feature, also lacking on the Blu-Ray, is also helpful.

Perfect player before HD or BLRy   02/10/2008
By rafirivera from Tampa, FL

What's great about it: USB port, Info display, Price, Quality brand, DVIX
What's not so great: None yet

"If you have movies on your external hard drive (like the Western Digital Passport), this is the player to choose! With the 2.0 USB port just plug and play all your movies, music and photos on your TV.
I still have my Accurian DVD player (from Radio Shack) but even it work fine, info display (like movies or song titles) is way space short and look cheap. Now is at my bedroom just in case.
I tried first the Phillips player (with usb as well) but did not read the external hard drive, just the jump-drive.
This Pioneer is the best player you can find with USB.

Great Product for Price   02/10/2008
By Dcfly040 from Maine

What's great about it: Easy to setup, Easy to use
What's not so great: none found yet

"I compared many upconversion DVD players. There are many with more features and a much higher price. However, for the price I found this product to be very, very good.
This picture quality, sound and more importantly to me, the ease of set up was wonderful.
I have a Pioneer Surround sound system and have owned other Pioneer products in the past and have always been pleased.
For the money, it's a very good buy.

Will play many different types of discs.   01/26/2008
By amnegrin from Texas

What's great about it: Many different formats
What's not so great: Has a audio glitch

"Well I had to write this over some concerns that I have seen with this model. I have had three of these units and the one thing I noticed is the DV-400 has a audio glitch where the sound will drop out some times for about a second. Other than that this player seems to be a really nice DVD upconvert. I've owned many DVD players and this one seems to be a good unit other than the audio drop outs that happen sometimes with movies, sometimes when playing CD or MP3 discs.
The one thing I also noticed is that the Best Buy outlet on Ebay sells a lot of returns on this unit so it makes me wonder if the returns are over the audio dropouts that happen.

Great product for todays TV   01/18/2008
By peepsboss from Virginia

What's great about it: Compatibility, picture quailty, options
What's not so great: Tad slow on start-up. Thats it!

"This machine is not only a DVD player but a full blown media extender. As others stated no need to repeat the great pic quality etc and a huge plus that the best-buy sales rep was wrong in: the player WILL play divx/avi files from USB! He told me only from burned DVD-R's otherwise the usb support is just for pictures and mp3 songs. Go figure..
I suggest this box for any of you who have lots of avi files and can just plug in their external drive or flash key. Superb!

Best DVD player I've seen   01/03/2008
By mack308

What's great about it: Outstanding Quality, tons of menu options to play with, Divx support, USB port, Breathes new life into your DVD's
What's not so great: There is a delay between turning power on, and the unit turning on, buttons are a tad small.

"Pioneers are known for their excellent product quality, very solid feel, doesn't feel flimsy or plastic like other models do. Tons of menu options to customize, Virtual surround sound works great, and the screen saver is excellent(especially if you have rear projection/plasma).
The only con that I have noticed is that there is a noticeable lag time between pushing the on button, and the receiver turning on. At first glance I thought I had to return the unit for being defective. Besides that little annoyance, this is an excellent value, I'd buy it again.

Great Purchase   01/02/2008
By Paulb from Texas

What's great about it: Great Upconvert, Easy to setup, Love the Audio Options
What's not so great: The manual stated that Component Video gives the best picture which is wrong

"I bought this unit to replace a previous standard pioneer for our 50" Plasma with HDMI. After buying that absurdly priced HDMI 1.3 cable, this unit rocks. The upconvert is near HD quality and really made our standard DVD's stand out. Note to owners of DVD TV Shows...you will see little difference since these were produced at a lower quality for broadcast.

Until the whole Blu-Ray/HD thing is sorted out we are very happy with this purchase. Audio options allowed surround sound and another option to enhance dialog and even out the booming sound effects...works very well.

Close but no cigar!   01/02/2008
By JHinDenver from Denver, CO

What's great about it: Menu, features, sound
What's not so great: Grainy on 1080P

"After reading all the reviews and how excited some people were with upconverting DVD players I thought I would buy one. I connected it via the HDMI went through all the initial settings and anxiously awaited the results and was not impressed. I guess it was because I had expectaions of HD like quality and I think it does an ok job of doing that but its not HD. My old Toshiba progressive scan DVD player was pretty good so I was kinda expecting amazing. I think the problem is not in the player but in the DVD, there just isn't enough information on the DVD to make it look High Def. C'mon if the discs are $25.00 and over and the players start around $250.00 and above your not getting HD for $80-$100.00! The bottom line is "if it looks like a duck and sounds like a duck". It's a duck!"

What's great about it: Great value for the money
What's not so great: no optical digital out

"This is to "big kid" This dvd is not 1080p and doesn't claim to be, so you can't set up for it. Get a blueray or HDdvd if you want to get 1080p.
Can't beat this for the money. 90 bucks for a DVD player with these features is pretty cool.

Not high end, but good   12/24/2007
By Locutus from Cuyahoga Falls, OH

What's great about it: Plays PAL discs
What's not so great: front panel buttons too small

"I bought this to replace my stopgap "el-cheapo" player & am not disappointed. My main reason was for the ability to play PAL format (if region 0) discs. This is not listed anywhere on Pioneer's site or the manual & I found the info in a forum. The salesperson was cool enough to hook it to a display so I could confirm before purchasing. Many cheap models can do this also, but I wanted one that had better audio through the analog outs.

Since I have not taken the HDTV plunge yet, I cannot comment on those features.

The build quality is ok for a under $100 player although the drive is a bit noisy. I do like having controls on the unit also. Call it old school, but I hate having to use the remote to access everything. The buttons are a bit too small though, but at least they're present.

This one comes with a decent remote - better than the cheapies! Menu access & setup is pretty easy & intuitive.

I compared the audio to my high end Sony from years ago & it's pretty darn close. When you just listen & ignore the picture (or just play a good CD), the sound is pretty good. Not Audiophile, but it doesn't have the harsh quality that those budget players have.

The EQ & virtual surround modes are garbage & Sony did the VS feature much better 10 years ago. The DRC feature works well & it's good to see different settings for it. Good for late night watching.

One thing I'd have liked is a more detailed bit rate display. This displays the whole signal, but does not have separate breakdowns for the video & audio bitrates. Useful for those that just want to know.

I noticed quite a few were returned & this was cause for concern. The salesperson explained that they come back because others thought it was a HD player & don't understand what the 'upconversion' really is. I accepted that & I got this open box for $79 & I consider it a fair price for what this unit is. Personally I'd rather been able to buy the Elite model for it's Audiophile audio :) & better build quality, but for some reason you can't order some of the Magnolia stuff online even. This one met the minimum requirements.

If you need a better one to replace that piece of junk you thought was a bargain without spending too much, then this is it.

Excellent DVD player   12/18/2007
By Drewchubbs from OKC, OK

What's great about it: Great Picture, all the features you'd expect in a dvd player. USB.
What's not so great: Digital Coax audio only (no optical audio). Not quite as great as HD-DVD or BluRay?

"I love this dvd player. When I first hooked it up, I loaded Transformers in it. At first, I was kinda unimpressed when I watched on my Sony 46" tv (kdl-46W3000). But then, I put the same movie in my older, trusty Toshiba standard dvd player. There was a world of difference. On the standard player, the picture had a slight ghosting effect. The characters faces were soft and at times, blurry. On this new Pioneer DVD player, details were sharp and crisp. No ghosting at all. Details were very noticeable. The action sequences were great. I found the same results with all 5-6 movies I compared side by side with my old dvd player.

Contrary to some reviews, this dvd player DOES have slow motion. You have to hold the frame by frame button until the player goes into slomo mode. Then you have 4 (I think) settings: 1/32 speed, 1/16 speed, 1/8 speed, and 1/4 speed.

Getting started was simple. I was able to get everything set up for viewing without really consulting the manual. In fact, I had watched about 30 mins. of my first movie before I even read it!

The only thing I noticed right of the bat was the colors needed a little adjustment going through the HDMI port. However, I didn't realize that my TV had separate settings for each of its three HDMI ports, and I set that up, no problem.

Overall, this is a great DVD player, and it ought to get anyone through the initial salvos of the HDDVD/BR war. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants an upconverting dvd player with a couple of extra features like usb and divx compatibility.

Best upconvert DVD Player   12/16/2007
By Trabmada from Lehi, UT

What's great about it: great quality, name brand

"I think that this player has the best upconversion by far. I have seen a bunch of different players that do a good job, but I like this one the best. You need to ensure that the resolution settings are the same as your TV (i.e. 720p setting if it is a 720p TV). I really like the USB connection on the front of the player. This allows me to view pics from my thumb drive directly on the TV. Really cool idea. Well done Pioneer, as always."

Excellent   12/01/2007
By Eddie2u from Pennsylvania

What's great about it: No more burning Dvdrs
What's not so great: None so far

"Great for what I want it for!
I download alot of divx files, and wanted to be able to play these files from the usb port instead of burning them to dvd just to be able to watch them on my tv. What is so cool about this player is the usb port. I store all my divx movies on my portable 250 gig seagate drive. To play a movie all I have to do is plug the drive into to the Usb port of the Pioneer, hit the usb button on the remote to view the contents of whats on the drive than select the movie I want to play. The file menu is much better than the Phillips and the Tv picture looks great. I think I am going to buy another for the bedroom next.I am not sure if this player works with ntfs formated drives, but I know for sure the player works with my fat32 formated seagate drive

Does NOT play MEPG   12/01/2007
By anderson

"The product features says it plays MPEG. It's wrong. This player cannot recognize any mpg/mpeg files on DVD+R and -R. I read the manual very carefully and found that it never mentions that it can play MPEG.

I tried to burn one mpg, one avi, and one divx file on a DVD-R. The player can play avi and divx without any problems. However, the mpg file just never shows up. It's a shame that a DivX certified player cannot recognize MPEG. What a joke!

Besides, the manual also mentions some restriction on DVD+R disc. This player would play +R disc only when it's a DVD Video (backup DVD movies).

What's great about it: easy to hook up, easy to use, extraordinary picture on HDTV

"I was very pleased that i went with this product over the other upconverts as it dispalys an exceptional picture. i have it connected to my projector tv which i currently have set at 165 inches and it looks amazing. i have never watched HDDVD or BluRay but to me the picture with this product is just like the HD movies I watch on cable.
also, i just bought one of these for my father for christmas and i am confident he will love it too.

Pioneer DV-400 Has Versitile HDMI Output.   11/15/2007
By ScotWm from Berkeley, CA

What's great about it: Pioneer DV-400 delivers outstanding performance at a modest price.
What's not so great: None, when considering the price of this Pioneer player.

"Other reviewers have discussed various attributes of the Pioneer DV-400V DVD player: Sparkling, clear images, great sound, ability to play a multitude of disk formats and ease of operation. Regardless of its other qualities, this Pioneer player has one important attribute that can be found on very few DVD players: The ability to output 480i over its HDMI port.

If a TV or projector has high-quality internal de-interlacing and scaling circuitry, the ability of the Pioneer DV-400V to deliver 480i content through its HDMI port will provide the best possible picture. This 480i output is the native video format as it is encoded on DVDs. The Pioneer player can transport this 480i content from the disc in digital format to a TV or projector. The TV or projector can then perform its own de-interlacing and scaling, often producing better results than a DVD player can produce using its internal processors. In many cases, "jaggies" will be completely eliminated and 3:2 pulldown will be consistently perfect when a high quality TV is presented with 480i digital content. This 480i output is also the ideal format to send to external video signal processors.

Other DVD players can produce 480i output, but only through their component outputs. While other DVD players have the ability to output 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p from their HDMI ports, the Pioneer DV-400V has the unique ability to also output 480i -- an attribute which gives this player a distinct edge over its competition. Quite often, de-interlacing as well as film cadence and detection can be best performed by a high quality TV, when presented with a 480i digital signal.

One reviewer noted that the Pioneer DV-400V cannot perform slow motion playback. This is NOT the case. Page 24 of the Pioneer DV-400V operating instructions details this function under the heading "Playing in slow motion." Slow motion speeds of 1/6, 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 are available. Those having problems with 1080p might want to invest in HDMI cables which are HDMI 1.3 certified.
