"I bought this camera because I wanted something more advanced than point and shoot. I had to play with it quite a bit before I got the hang of it but it takes great pictures, especially the action photos. Don't buy this camerea if you are not patient and don't want to read the instructions, however. This camera is great for someone who dreams of taking professional quality photos."

S5 is awesome

"The S5 is a great camera, and everything that I said in my review of the S3 goes for this one as well. However, the difference between 8 MP and 6 isn't that great if the largest prints you want at 11x14 or 8x10. I can't see the difference and I've got a fairly critical eye. (I also disagree with a review in the San Francisco Chronicle this morning that said that the S5 (and S3) "can't shake the digital look."
I've been taking pictures since 1948 (a Kodak Brownie, what else?), and color since 1960. I've used three SLRs professionally, and I'll match the 6 and 8 MP with any 35mm I've used. How can a camera be rated as having a "high quality lens" have less than high quality pictures and still have a digital look ... although there is more noise with the S5 than the S3 IS.
Five stars because it deserves it. The price of the S3 is/was much better, and I really don't have a preference because both have the 12x stabilized zoom, the feature I use most often. And the larger LCD is nice, but I use the viewfinder on both, the first I've had that works well with glasses.
Neither camera is a point-and-shoot even in the auto setting. I do not recommend the camera to those who think they can pick it up and take pictures right away such as those that I and other experiences photo buffs have. If most of your pictures of people are missing heads or feet and you can't center anything on purpose, got to an Elph or Sony or a lower end Kodak. This is not a professional's camera, but it's not for rank amateurs either. Nothing personal: just don't waste money on a hundred features you may never use."

"WOW I love this camera, it is absolutely the best investment that I have ever made!! I took it 2 two concerts in the past 3 weeks and I am so pleased with the way my pictures, video and audio came out!! This camera is def. one to have if you love photography and love taking pictures often. Good for someone that has a bit of camera experience, this thing can be complex sometimes and confusing but overall very easy to learn and very easy to use!!"

"I purchased this camera back in May for my finacee's birthday. She absolutely loves it!! The settings can be changed so she can take black and white photos, or regular color. We can even set the camera to focus on just one specific color!! Everyday use, birthdays, holidays, and vacations we take our camera everywhere. It's lightweight and never weighs me down. The one thing I love the most about this camera is the video option. Because the camera uses a memory card, we can record videos without worrying about a time limit. I would recommend this camera to anyone that wants to be able to take photos on limited notice or for planning big events. This is one Fantastic Camera!!"

"I just bought the camera to replace my 35mm.This Camera has many options and the brand name Cannon for a resonable price. I am so happy with it, that I recommend it to everyone that is looking for one.My College daughter already bought the same one and my friend thinking about getting one also.Sure it's allot to read in the Instruction, but a camera with that many options,needs explainations to operate it and how to put it on the Computer etc.But after you get so used to it, then everything goes easier like everything else in life. I love the Screen, that you can move around.The Zoom is so great when we go on vacation for lighthouses, mountains,ocean, museums etc. This was one of the reasons I bought it,ofcourse there are other reasons that caught my eyes for this camera. And even if it is not small like the pocketsizes,there are nice bags on the market.But when you buy a camera think for what you need it,what is more important. Zoom, price, Memories,Options,etc. Sure it's not a professional Camera, but it does professional looking photos."

"This camera is perfect for the beginner, but has enough bells and whistles to keep a more experienced user busy. Prints are clear and with its zoom capability, it's hard to get a bad shot for framing.
This camera also takes great movies which can be easily published on the web to share with others. This is not a camera to miss and at a pricetag that makes it impossible to pass up - seriously!"

"Granted we bought this product Yestarday. It has great quality and functions, but it is going to take some time to learn them all. We looked at cameras for about two weeks and had looked at this on verse a Kodak. the main seeler was the battier and the shutter speed. Being able to buy new batteries when out in a theme park with the camera is great and not having to recharge a lit-ion."

"The Canon S5 IS is a fine camera. I am particulary fond of the super macro mode, as I take a lot of macro shots. It is an easy camera to use and has many fine features. I have climbed the ladder from the Canon A60 to an S1 IS and now the S5. I would recommend this camera to anyone."

Awesome Image stability and clarity

"This camera has the best image stability compared to other IS cameras especially Sony DSC-H7. The DSC-H9 has a better IS that H7 but compared to Canon S5 it is less.
Canon S5 has an amazing zoom, and clarity. It does have a little color fringe at higher ISOs but at ISO200 and ISO400 it is really good. If you don't care about lower picture sizes/resolution, then canon S5 can take really good pictures at ISO 80, which you can't find in many cameras. But that doesn't mean that you have to use ISO 80 for good pictures. If you are taking night shots, ISO 1600 would be the best bet or even ISO 800.
Canon S5 has a swivel LCD screen which i always use. For people who are short and are standing in a crowd to take pictures of some amazing shows, this would be really useful - hold the camera high above the head, tilt the LCD towards you and take pictures or videos. Sony may have the best Camcorders but canon S5 can take both amazing Photos and good quality Video.
Overall, Canon S5 is comparatively much better than the Panasonic Lumix and Sony DSC-H series. I would recommend it"

"My husband got this for me for mothers day and I love the easy of taking pictures with it. There are many options that I have not figured out yet, but the quality and the ability to zoom are wonderful. I have done the camera's with the batter packs before and will never do that again. With this i never have to worry about loosing a picture as i carry spare batteries with me and am always on the go. I am so happy and the money was well worth it."

Too many "downgrades" from the S3

"I wanted to love this camera ... I really, really did. Especially after owning an S3 I thought they might just have the perfect camera. Unfortunately Canon decided to do some fairly stupid things when they designed the camera.
One major flaw is the inexplicable decision to house the memory card slot in the battery compartment. The batter compartment door is not easy to deal with in the first place, making this placement all the more irksome. Speaking of batteries, as with previous models you can use standard alkaline or rechargeable batteries (instead of propriatary bricks, etc.) which is always a plus. However, you'll want to use rechargeables like NiMh as it will eat through regular batteries VERY quickly.
Some of the other "downgrades" include:
- The removal of the super-highspeed burst mode. You can no longer shoot at 2.5 f/s. If you're into shooting sporting events or even children at play, this is a real shame.
- Time-lapse has been made all but useless
- Limited options on FPS and audio sampling rate when recording movies.
The S5 DOES have its improvemtns of course. The larger and higher-res LCD is nice and really can make a difference. It also appears to be quite a bit brighter and easier to see in sunlight. The extra 2 megapixels seems nice, but in a practical sense I don't see a difference. (In fact, some have mentioned that quality has suffered.) Movie recording has been improved so that you can now record up to 4GB files (about 35 mins.) at a time. The face detection technology in th DIGIC-III is reallly nice as are the safety FE and MF functions. The other big items is the hot-shue which allows you to add an external flash.
Overall this is a great camera, don't get me wrong, it is just a disappointment that they were so close to perfection going from the S3 to the S5 and missed the mark. The excellent picture quality, stereo-sound recording, dedicated movie button, fast between shot times, near-pefect menu and button layouts etc. that make the Canon S-line so fantastic are all still there. Maybe when the S6/S7 comes we'll have the perfect Powershot S-series camera. Until then ... 4.5 stars."
