"I first got them to use on a hiking trip with my school, they worked great. We hiked up Mt. Modadnock in NH. The range is great. I was on the top of the mountain and was able to stay in contact with the person on the bottom, and with the people throught the mountain. The MT. was about 3,652 feet. They come in really handy. I also use them at events, and just to stay in contact with my parents. I highly recomend them to anyone interested in purchasing walkie talkies."

What's great about it: Long battery life, durable, clear, NOAA weather boradcasts What's not so great: On the expensive side, a bit bulky, confusing security channel system
"I bought this set to take with me on multiple-car road trips, hiking and camping trips, and photo shoots. The battery life is excellent, often lasting for an entire weekend's worth of use (far from an outlet) with no problems at all. I've tested the range up to about 18 miles. The sound is clear, delay minimal, and I've experienced little interference from other RF devices. Excellent choice in areas where cell coverage is spotty (or completely non-existent). Being able to pick up NOAA broadcasts is a good safety feature, especially when doing back country hiking. The radio can be a bit bulky (we're all used to internal antennas from cell phones), and getting the channel and security code set properly to get both (or multiple) radios to talk with each other can be a bit cumbersome, but that is just a minor setback. Overall, highly recommended. Spend the extra bit of money and save yourself a lot of hassle!"
What's great about it: AA Battery option, compact, easy to set up. What's not so great: Bad sound, like talking through a long sewer pipe. Barely understandable. Going to have to return them.
"Motorola seems to have missed the boat on these. The bad sound quality trumps all the radios' good features. Other user forums have mentioned the same thing. The speakers or sound process application need improvement to make it a competitive radio."

What's great about it: Compact, battery life What's not so great: distance (of course)
"These radios never live up to their distance claims, so I am not too upset about that. These radios are used out at our ranch, and work like a champ!
Comes with the charging dock, so they are always ready. Distance is OK, not great. VERY durable... each has been dropped 6+ feet several times and keep on tickin'"

"I own a cruise travel agency and cruise all the time and these work great on the ship. I am able to give one to my child and let her roam on her own around the ship If we need her we just call. Great battery life. On land we do not get the rated 25 miles, but do get a good 4-5 mile distance with them. I would and have recomended them to anyone who has kids and travel alot (It gives you and your child a little fredom)... great value for the money."

"Note: This radio requires an FCC license to use all GMRS and high power frequencies.
I've reviewed this radio extensively, and will give some short comments.
This radio has a range of about 1.25 miles using Licensed GMRS frequencies. It is always best to disregard all advertising claims on range. It is not possible under most conditions to exceed a couple miles on these frequencies.
This radio has both CTCSS and DCS for interference protection. The QT function allows for further interference protection.
Weather radio reception is a nice function.
The scan function is advanced and will display channel and CTCSS/DCS code. You can also lock out channels you do not want to scan.
Battery life with the supplied packs is not the greatest. Using your own batteries helps some; but the supplied charger won't recharge your own cells.
Sound quality is acceptable, but not the greatest.
