I found the 1740 DVD player to have impressive sound, a good design, and a useful auto shut-off feature. Although it can play many types of media, I bought it to play (upscaled) my collection of standard DVD's through my HDTV.
But nothing I tried (HDMI cable, component cables, S video cable, and settings/feature adjustments) improved the lackluster and somewhat grainy picture quality. Actually, my $80 upscaling DVD player performs better.
What's great about it: Excellent Sound Quality
What's not so great: Poor Picture Quality
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

This dvd player puts out a very good picture as if yyour in the movie!!
What's great about it: Very good picture
What's not so great: loads a little slower than most

Awesome performance from Denon at a great price, Got this for the game room as a budget dvd player and i got something that gives big buck performance!

After such a long time experimenting with other DVD players with HD upconversion, this is one is by far the best! Denon really deserve the award for best home entertainment system products.
What's great about it: Amazing quality picture and sounds

Nice player for the money. Best upconvert player I've owned so far compared to Onkyo and Yamaha. Shadows not as plugged up in 1080i using HDMI and Burr Brown DA converters offer great audio as well.
What's great about it: Good Picture and sound
What's not so great: Noisy at staartup

The upconversion to 1080P is by far the worst that I have seen. The picture is totally distorted. The best picture available is 480P via component video wires as opposed to HDMI cable. You are better off buying a $50 DVD player for picture quality. DENON is a great brand name, but they have dropped the ball on their DVD players. Buy a Blueray or HD def player if you really want 1080P qulaity picture.
What's great about it: High quality circuitry with great sound quality
What's not so great: Terrible Picture Quality
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
