A big step up 01/27/2008

What's great about it: delivers stunning picture; great for movies and sports
What's not so great: not much help on how to fine tune

"We decided to replace our old "HD Compatable" Benq projector (which was pretty good) with this true 1080p 1920x1080 projector and the picture improvement is amazing! At this point we are using a simple Samsung upconvertable DVD player (waiting for HDDVD/Bluray wars to settle) and I have to say it provides a great picture with all our old DVDs. HD from our cable provider gives us a great sports picture. If you have not watched an NFL game on a 100" true HD screen it is really something. When setting up the projector, know that you will have to fine tune it (which we never did with our older projector) to get the best picture. There is not much help in the instructions so you need to visit the internet or hire a professional (we did it our selves through trial and error). Also, the zoom is very limited, so use the sizing chart at optoma.com to make sure it will provide the size picture you are expecting. Overall, its a tough decision to move up into this price category, but if you want a picture that really approaches theater quality, this is a great way to go."

A great projector 09/10/2007

"I bought the HD80 after doing extensive research. The main things that swayed me to make the purchase were the 1300 Lumen brightness ability and the 10000:1 contrast ratio. Also, it has 2 HDMI inputs so I use 1 for PS3 (which is the most amazing thing ever) and 1 for cable TV.
The picture of this projector is amazig. I did not thing that a projector could produce this quality of HD. I am shooting it onto a Optoma 92in Greywolf II fixed screen. The darks are amazing.
The only thing that makes it tough to commit to this projector is that the install is very specific...Meaning there is a certian distance that the projector has to be from the screen (can be found on optoma.com distance calculator).
Like I said, the picture is amazing. It shoots out the PS3 blu-ray at 1080P and its seriously amazing.
Dollar for dollar, this is the best purchase anyone can make. Its perfect."
