I did a TON of research and after selling my car I had enough money to buy a really nice entertainment center, which isn't fully complete but will be shortely. I have two mirage tower speakers, a mirage center speaker, and a martin logan sub. First of all the elite series is an eye catching series, it's not just some big black box that has wires running in and out of it, but it has a rich black gloss with a series of blue lights, red and yellowish orange lights that really give it a desirable appeal.
Second of all it has more features than I need at the moment, but is always good to have knowing how I spend money at BB.
Third the MCACC setup, which in case you are wondering is a speaker calibration system using a microphone that comes with the receiver and you place it in the spot that you will most likely be sitting at when you watch tv, movies, etc. and it runs through a series of tests with the speakers you have connected to ensure the best input at that range for your speakers. This was really easy to do almost like flicking a light switch.
Fourth the standard dvd upconversion is amazing, it's not blu-ray but you can tell there is a difference when you look at it side by side.
Now just to finish up: for those concerned about energy useage (or those who need another reason to convince the misses) this receiver is energy star rated. Another note: This is my first receiver, so I really can't compare it to any others but I based my decision on the other reviews and am quite pleased with the product and for whatever reason 8-10 years from now that I desire a new receiver there is probably a good chance that I will again go with the Pioneer Elite Brand.
What's great about it: Very easy setup with MCACC. TONS of features. Great sound. Standard DVD upconversion is really nice.
What's not so great: The remote takes a little getting used to, but really looks more complex than it really is

I have had this item for over a year with ipod dock and also a SIRIUS Satellite Radio in home use! and I also have Klipsch RF-52 Home Theater System speakers with sub woofer as well Pioneer-50" 720p Flat-Panel Plasma HDTV-PDP-5080HD there are some benefits have both a pioneer TV and pioneer Receiver and a playstation 3
The has a really good selection of sound banks as well as THX! and sound quality is amazingly warm feeling One small note is that the tv scrren on ipod connection could be a little more advanced!! also the hdmi connections get loose when you move the unit
and it takes a long time to build up the speaker connection!
What's great about it: wide range of features, Amazing sound !
What's not so great: poor tv connection also some menus are just to plain & a little to expensive

This receiver sounds great and looks even better. I bought it a while back and have it running Definitive Technology surround. I have everything connected through HDMI and it passes great video. Because it is so large it sits to high in my stand and the remote sensor is above the window on the doors so the remote wont work with it. This isnt a problem since i also have a PRO-151 60" Elite TV where I can connect the receiver directly to the TV and use the remote sensor on the TV to control the receiver. I am very happy with the Elite line and think they are great products.
What's great about it: Looks great and sounds great
What's not so great: Big

I just got this receiver about two weeks ago to upgrade from a Yamaha, that is now upstairs connected to my bose speakers. I did not want to spend quite this much but am not at all disappointed after hearing the sound quality. It is connected to my Klipsch Reference Series speakers and a 12" JBL sub. There are a lot of inputs so I do not have to worry about growing out of this receiver like many people do with inexpensive models with fewer connections. There are a lot of receivers to choose from and I was impressed with some of the others such as Yamaha and Denon but after listening to them all in the Magnolia store I believe that the Pioneer delivered the best sound.
What's great about it: Clean sound, connectivity, power
What's not so great: None yet.

The sound quality is breathtaking. I bought it to replace an Adcom high end amp and sound processor. The Adcom setup sounded great, but I went through 3 processors and decided to give up on that brand. I was skeptical about changing from separates to an all in one audio/video receiver. I narrowed my choices to the Pioneer, a Yamaha and a Denon in the same price range. A store demo comparison revealed the Pioneer to have a crisper, cleaner sound, especially at the higher frequencies. Now that I have it set up at home, it sounds even better than my Adcom. It has plenty of inputs and options for processing surround sound. It even has action, drama, sports, entertainment show, etc. modes. The only con for me was the depth of the unit. It needs 19 - 20" overall shelf depth, so I had to cut out the back of my entertainment unit behind it.
What's great about it: clean crisp sound
What's not so great: size of the unit

I was skeptical to spend this much money on a receiver, but it's worth the price. I've had several different receivers over the years, but they are all entry level compared to this unit. The sound is amazing and clear at any level. I have it in my basement with high end speakers and I can't even turn it up all the way. I had the samsung 1000 watt surround sound system before this and I can't believe I waited this long to upgrade. I'm using it for 5.1, but it can also be set-up for 7.1. Although it looks intimidating to install, the set-up process and calibration was painless.
What's great about it: Powerful
What's not so great: None

Great piece of gear.

The Pioneer sounds like no other receiver. It's got an edginess to it that adds punch to the super high and super low ends that no other brand can.
It is THX Select 2 certified (NOT Ultra certified), but the difference is not noticable. Anyone who tells you different doesn't know which end is up. Select 2 is optimized for small and medium sized rooms, and if you're not using it in a true theater setting, you'll never know the difference. Besides, if you need Ultra 2 for a massive theater setup, you'll need more than a pair of surrounds and rear surrounds, and the additional distribution amp negates the primo sounding processing anyways. To summarize, don't let the boo birds tell you that Select 2 is not legit. It adds clarity to the Pro Logic IIx signal, and is a nice feature, but not a deal breaker.

There are plenty of inputs here, enough to go around. If you need a 4th HDMI in (I have a DirecTV HR20, Xbox 360 w/HD DVD, and PS3), then you can always go with the next model up. Otherwise, all the inputs are easily assignable through the menus, you can rename them for your personal use, and it's very simple.

The EQ and Balance setup is very solid and accurate, and requries no tweaking if you place the mic directly in the listener's sweet spot.

The 7 channel stereo Neural processing is very good sounding, and has a variety of options of how wide or narrow you want your stereo to spread based on the sound that's coming in, which is ESSENTIAL. No other receiver I've used comes close with these sounds.

The Pioneer's ability to take in bitstream sources over HDMI 1.3a from BD/HD DVD is there, but still a while off for most players. This receiver is a good 5-8 year investment in my opinion, and in 3 years, bitstream output of 7.1 audio from a HD disc player will be very common, so don't take this feature for granted. For the time being, it seamlessly accepts uncompressed 5.1 PCM, and is able to process it through the PL IIx encoder to distribute the uncompressed audio to the rear surrounds, something that receivers in the past few years haven't been able to do.

The negatives are negligable. The remote is klunky and hard to use, the interface is the same as the Pioneer receivers from 3-4 years ago, and switching between your 3 HDMI inputs from the remote requires cycling through them using a modifier button on the remote. However, the remote issue is solved by simply picking up a Harmony or Learning universal remote, which controls this reciever like a gem (not to mention the rest of your components). If you're dropping this much for a receiver, go get a Harmony, it'll be the best thing for you since sliced bread. As for the menu, you'll use it to set the thing up at first, and forget about it for the life of the receiver. It may still be gray and white, and make you feel like you're editing options on an old dog computer, but it's easy to use.

If you're getting tired of not having enough digital inputs, you want 7.1, and you're ready to really hear the difference with TrueHD and DTS-HD MA tracks, this is the most affordable and best sounding way to go about it. Go get one, NOW!!!
What's great about it: Lossless audio capability, plethora of inputs, THX certification, 7.1 Surround Auto EQ and Balance setup
What's not so great: Remote control is too complex, MS DOS looking interface, Switching between HDMI inputs is cumbersome

I recently purchased this receiver to replace a Marantz I have had for quite some time. I have been impressed with the sound quality, and the MCACC was easy to setup. The video scaler has done a great job of upconverting standard dvd's to HD. I havent had it long enough to use all of its features, but so far it has been a great addition to my home theatre setup. My only complaint is that at this price range it would be nice to get something with the THX Ultra 2 certification, instead of the Select 2 certification. I also had a problem with the amp cutting out on the first one I purchased, but BB has ordered me a new one to swap for mine.
