Good value   12/30/2007
By JohninBirmingham from Birmingham, AL

What's great about it: On-sale cost, overall performance
What's not so great: Speakers a bit weak

"Very happy with set until after six weeks the HDMI suddenly stopped receiving signals from my SONY Bravia HT. Confirmed problem wasn't with SONY or HDMI cord, requiring visit by techie to look at TV. He unplugged set, replugged, then HDMI worked. Seems "smart" TVs are like computers sometimes. Luckily, I had bought four-year in-home service plan. Strongly recommend for any large TV purchase--at least until these things are as established as CRT sets. At on-sale price, this is good value set. If I had more money, I'd probably go to a bigger name hoping for longer life and greater dependability. However, I don't understand paying more for some specs, like higher contrast ratio. This picture is like being there for me. I read about bad blacks with this set, and sometimes they seem washed out. However, this is not always case, so I suspect some signals rather than screen are the problem. One other note: Had the unplug tactic not worked, the techie would have had to junk the set for store exchange, since no repair parts are available. Maybe this is because the set is going out of date. More likely, it was designed and built for junking, rather than repair. All the more important to buy that service policy!"

Great deal on a Good TV   12/29/2007
By MKIIIPlinker from Southern Maryland

What's great about it: HDTV looks great on the HD channels from Direct TV
What's not so great: Haven't seen any at this time

"I bought the 42 inch Westinghouse 1080p LCD after doing a lot on on-line research. It had the features I wanted and I couldn't beat the price...a lot less than comparable LCD HDTVs from WalMart and Circuit City.
I brought it home, unpackaged it, and plugged it in. Setup was too easy. Nothing to do really, so we began watching HD TV within 30 minutes of opening the box. I called Direct TV and ordered a new HDDVR satellite receiver. When it came in three days later-WOW!!!! What a difference...I was happy with the reception and picture I was getting before but it was nothing compared to the full 1080 HD picture! The depth, color and clarity are breath taking. Watching a NFL game in 1080 is like being at the stadium...had the TV for two weeks, now- great TV...no problems, no complaints- exceeds my expectations.

Just try to get service!   12/21/2007
By FloridaJD from Tampa, Florida

What's great about it: Good picture - lots of connectivity
What's not so great: No service available from Westinghouse

"While the picture and features of this TV are great for the price, you will be very unhappy should you have any problem with it. Mine keeps switching inputs for no apparent reason and going blank. Also the sound does not work with the HDMI input. Westinghouse service admits these are problems when I call but the only solution is to ship them the TV in California because they have no parts for it already. Neither do they have any local service center where it could be returned. The freight to ship it to California is $245.00. Great warranty, isn't it? My advice is to pay more upfront and get a brand that has manufacturer's support."

The BEST LCD TV   12/20/2007
By MasterYoda from Maryland

What's great about it: Very high resolution, perfect exterior design & best for the money
What's not so great: None

"I bought this TV last month after searching for 6 months. I used to have a 32" LCD TV Sony Bravia but I gave it away because I am not satisfy with the pictures. When I saw this Westinghouse TV in Bestbuy, you can see the difference. The pictures having 1080p is so clear and bright than Sony & Samsung TVs. The sound is wonderfull to hear. It is clear with deep bass & highs. This is comparable with Boss audio system. Go to Bestbuy and buy this unit."

Super Color!   12/17/2007
By Anonymous

What's great about it: Superb Color,HDTV tuner,Price,Input-Output
What's not so great: Gray Black,Opitcal Audio from TV

"This is a great HDTV ! The color is superb and the input-output on the this TV rocks! Its meant for the future! The TV automatically selects the input when you pop-in a DVD etc! The black is no true black. It's grayish. (but good black for the price!) The only problem I had with this TV was the Optical Audio from the TV does not does not output a 5.1 surround sound. This was a big deal for me as I watch a lot of Over-the-Air channels. This is known issue of the TV and hence I had to return and pick a Samsung to replace it (expensive!). I would suggest this TV if you do not care about the over-the-air channels! Good TV for the money!"

DO NOT BUY -- YOU WILL BE SORRY   12/05/2007
By upsetowner from Virginia

What's great about it: Good From the Box
What's not so great: Poor Quality Over Timte

"I purchased this product in August 2006. The TV was good out of the box. I thought it was a great TV for the price. But, I have owned this set now for 15 months -- just outside of the warranty of 12 months. The TV screen is deteriorating with streaks forming vertically down the screen. The streaks are apparently a failure of the liquid crystals in the display as the streaks are digital in nature. I fear that the set will be useless in a few months -- currently the 1080p clarity has been compromised by the deterioration. It is obvious to me that the way Westinghouse is able to sell this set at such a low price is because they sacrificed quality -- in fact, Westinghouse admitted in a letter to me that they expect a failure rate of 2% due to defects in materials. I am not a plant -- I am an actual customer. I suggest ... DO NOT BUY THIS SET OR ANY OTHER SIMILAR WESTINGHOUSE LCD HDTV. You risk just throwing your money down the toilet."

Just cause it's 1080P don't mean it's better   11/30/2007
By jonzer2049er

What's great about it: Price
What's not so great: Contrast ratio

"I purchased this television mainly because it was in my price range and I was fixated on getting a 1080P display to replace my current 32" 720P Polaroid. After getting it home, it was apparent that the blacks were awful on this set. Several white lines went through the screen when trying to produce blacks and it looked almost blue instead of black. If you can get by this major problem then you will probably enjoy this television, I couldn't and decided to return it for a Samsung 720P HT4254 Plasma in my price range and even though I went back to 720P (only way I was going to get a true 1080P signal was through a PS3 or my HD-DVD's on my 360 anyway) dispaly I couldn't be happier. Don't get fooled into buying this television based on the 1080P display you wont be able to use it for your television broadcasts. I would recommend this as a large computer monitor if that's what your looking for and probably not much else."

westinghouse tech sppt awful   11/29/2007
By MayoMurph from annapolis

What's great about it: HDTV picture great for the price 4 HDMI
What's not so great: audio options unchangeable, ts no call back, strange HDMI

"Went to BB due to a breakin and TV theft and bought this 42" and looked great in the store. Replacing an olevia 37h system I got in may 06. The picture looked as good as the best Samsung in HD. Got it home and setup was easy, plugged in 3 HDMI cables, 2 gaming systems, and another coaxial cable from the FIOS box.
This TV had trouble switching from HD to digital TV, and digital TV was fuzzy. checked everything and went online to Westinghouse tech support. I then checked the options for all the TV and set as much as I dared. Being colorblind, grays and blacks and shadows are obvious. SOooo, I finally got to a setting I thought was good until my son told me that in every black area, there was a red ghost, and again settings did most of the trick, but there still was some ghosting.
Then I did the audio portion, just because I had a middle speaker for surround sound. I called West TS and discovered that I had to wait until after the weekend. I had this TV for a week before I brought it back due to the lack of TS from westinghouse. Some things are better left for them if they'd step up.
I ended up purchasing a Samsung 4061 for $1349 from a competitor who a a store within range, about $500 less than BB, and $250 more than the westie. Well worth it and have NO complaints from my son or wife.

1080pURE   11/28/2007
By Redundant from Atlanta, GA

What's great about it: 1080p on all HD inputs
What's not so great: I'm not that much of a critic...

"My nephew got this set on my recommendation, but because of other expenses I had to wait a month or so. Then I purchased the HP 42" 1080p on Black Friday because it was on sale, but it didn't suit my needs - only 1080i on component, 1366 x 768 on the VGA, and massive overscan on HDMI.
So one salary advance later I returned the HP and bought the Westinghouse. The Westinghouse supports 1080p input on the Component, VGA, and HDMI connectors, has 4 HDMI inputs, and selectable overscan.
Although some may not know it, the XBOX 360 ~ pre Elite with HDMI ~ supports 1080p on its component output - plus one. My PCs, hooked up via a KVM switch, connect at 1080p via the VGA input with both my ATI X800pro and my nVidia evga 8800gts ( the later in Vista as well with the latest drivers - nVidia finally fixed the 1080p bug ) - plus two. My PS3 via the HDMI inputs look pretty sweet too, with the overscan set to standard to see as much as possible ( I have a 1920 x 1200 24" PC monitor that does 1080p via HDMI - it has VGA, HDMI, Component, etc.. inputs - and it only shows a little more on screen than the Westinghouse 42" HDTV -- But its a Westinghouse too! L2410NM ) - plus three.
I particularly enjoy the automatic switching to the most recently activated input, and the direct input switching via the somewhat lousy remote ( the only *real* negative that I would report - but I have a harmony programmable - so hey... ).
Some people may talk about PQ, black level, HDTV tuner discrimination... Whatever.
I see a good, great in 720p up, picture on the tuner, and a great picture everywhere else, ease of use, and an inexpensive center to my HE setup.

Big Disappointment   11/27/2007
By AnonymousA from Astoria, NY

What's great about it: Inexpensive
What's not so great: Operates as if it's inexpensive

"I don't know if we just happened to get a bad one or what, but the picture on this thing was horrible. Any time the screen switched from a bright scene to a dark scene, a ghost of the first would be left, making it impossible to watch movies shot in the dark. The in-store model didn't seem to have this problem, so it was probably just a bad set. We didn't take the risk of having to lug another one back in, though. We went with an LG instead (720 instead of 1080). It looks amazing, and was $50 cheaper. Buy this one at your own risk. It may work fine, but even the store employees said they'd never buy a Westinghouse. They get returned far too often."

Love the TV   11/20/2007
By Goodlistener711 from Omaha, NE

What's great about it: Value/picture quality
What's not so great: None

"After owning and enjoying a Westinghouse 40 inch 1080i LCDwDVD player for a year I wanted to upgrade to a 1080p unit that was a bit bigger. Always watching the ads finally saw it on sale at Best Buy and bought.
Impressed with alot more fine tuning aspects for the picture. MUCH better picture than neighbors LG LCD display..and he paid 100's more for his set. Not a game player at all, just used for TV & DVD play.
I had issues though with how Best Buy displayed the TV. Mounted high on the wall ,and screen not tilted downward like ALL the other brands. (this was at both locations in Omaha) I couldn't help but wonder if it was done on purpose to make picture quality not as good from that angle that high in the air to steer people to other brands($$$) I've heard this happens sometimes with a budget brand.

Great for gaming and much more   11/19/2007
By pmroxh from Starkville, MS

What's great about it: Relatively Inexpensive for 1080p
What's not so great: Odd interference on S-Video connection

"Got this yesterday while the price was still sub-$1000. Mainly got it for my Xbox 360. I have the VGA adapter for it, and the PC input handles it flawlessly and beautifully at the max resolution of 1920x1080. It more than adequately handled a 3-way split-screen game of Halo 3, Gears of War looks fantastic, and Assassin's Creed is a thing of beauty. Also, one of the sticking points turned out not to be one after all, as this Guitar Hero addict detected absolutely no HD lag, which means Rock Band should run on this set with no problems.

Standard DVD's played through the 360 look very good, but with the system running at 1080p, you can really tell that you're not getting a full HD experience from a standard disc. I plan on getting the 360's HD DVD add-on at some point down the line. As for HD content from Xbox Live Marketplace, downloaded some HD movie trailers and they look marvelous.

The built-in tuner works but I need to make an upgrade in the antenna department to take full advantage of HD signals in my area. What signals I did get looked fantastic. I will admit that some reviewers' issues with the black levels do have some merit, as the picture is very bright. Haven't fine tuned any settings yet, but maybe that'll fix the issue. However, I didn't see the same black level issues when using the Xbox as the source.

I'm still running archaic technology in the DirecTV/TiVo department, and for some reason the S-video hookup involved produces a loud hum and upward-scrolling lines in the picture. Possibly a grounding issue, but it's all moot because I plan to upgrade to DirecTV HD/DVR in the next month or so, relegating the old setup to a guest room or something.

Haven't tested the HDMI inputs yet, but I'm sure those will get some use with the eventual upgrade to HD dish or a PlayStation 3 purchase. Component hookups work fine on my old PlayStation 2, and I plan to get Wii component cables today to take full advantage of that system.

All in all, a great bargain, especially for 1080p. For gamers, it's a must-buy.

Good......but not Great.   11/18/2007
By HonestReviewFL from FLORIDA

What's great about it: PRICE!! Great for HDDVD, BluRay, Gaming
What's not so great: Poor TV upscaling compared to Bignames, Black Levels, SSLLLOOOWWWW menu pops ups(but still good stuff), audio delay

"I just bought this LCD over the weekend using some coupons. I definetly can't complain about the price. You can take the price difference fromt he Brand names and get some extras(cables, mounts, ext.warr). Initially when I hooked up my PS3 & HDDVD it was quite impressive as far as picture goes. But if thats all you usually do(dvd movie and gaming) then this is the unit for you.
Me on the other hand use it to its full capability. The black level on this unit is not good, it gets pixeled on dark portions of a scene and i did notice bob costas dialog did not match his mouth. Like a bad Japanese dubbed movie. basically Big HIDEF movie watchers and Gamers this for you, Mostly HDTV program and SDtv program watchers not for you. Plus this thing can put some heat out, so don't get for a bedroom. You definetly pay for what you get for, Low Price for less quality.
