Fantastic GPS unit06/29/2008
By AmoebaChant
What's great about it: Accurate, intuitive UI, great screen What's not so great: Voice recognition not very reliable
"I've had several Garmin units in the past, including one of the original car navigation models, and this is by far the easiest to use unit with the most intuitive UI that I've used. The time estimates are usually right on, as the unit uses average actual speeds from road sections as opposed to the posted speed limit in its calculations. I would highly recommend this unit to a friend."

THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS06/27/2008

What's great about it: OVERALL OPERATION What's not so great: TECH SUPPORT IS UNRESPONSIVE
"I purchased the TomTom 920 a few months ago and have been very pleased with the operation....wide display, fast recalculations....and a great suction mount! A little short on POIs but adequate to find my Dunkin Donuts or BOA and a gas station near the airport. The problem came when I downloaded the software upgrade. Since then, I have not been able to download updates to my device. Tech Support has promised to call me back twice and failed. I have spoken with 2 reps and 1 supervisor and no resolution since 5/31/08......now you know the REST of the story!"

We love our Tom Tom.05/02/2008
By minniebfrom Alvarado,TX
What's great about it: We can use the Tom Tom in any vehicle that we may travel in.
"Our Tom Tom has helped us to get around in cities that we had never been to before and to find restraurants, theaters, etc. in those cities. My husband really loves using his Tom Tom while riding his motorcycle, it is a lot easier than trying to read a map and he can keep his hands on the motorcycle and his eyes on the street while getting the directions to a location."

Great Value04/28/2008
By cmlowe77from Collingswood, NJ
What's great about it: Bluetooth, Good amount of POIs, Map SHare, Widescreen What's not so great: Maps could be a little better
"I am a sales rep in a large geographic territory. The TomTOm720 has been invaluable getting me to appointments on time. I have been able to navigate around traffic when necessary and have the ability to call my office while talking on the bluetooth handsfree phone feature on the TomTom. Although all the glitches in the maps haven't been worked out yet, the pros definitely outweigh the cons. Pick one up today."

What's great about it: easy to use
"i upgraded to this model for the mp3 and pic option which is not really needed and the FM transmission is not that easy to lock in a clear station but over all i found my tomtom to work very well and easy to use and with updates online and the ability to change and add features you can customize it to what you like but i would say for a basic gps and the model i had first was the TomTom ONE XL is all you need so save the extra money ... for gas lol"

Excellent product w/ all the TomTom features04/25/2008
By jd08from Houston, TX
What's great about it: Bright colorful screen, great interface, extra features What's not so great: Outdated maps, price
"I am a realtor so I take my TomTom everywhere that I go. On the fly, it is a great thing to have handy. One of the only negatives is that some of the maps are outdated and it will guide you the long way around because it doesn't realize that there is another newer road. Despite the maps, this is a great product."

Don't wast your money....04/23/2008
By vucatfrom Mechanicsburg, PA
What's great about it: easy naviagtion, basic functions What's not so great: none of the extra features work well
"It is a great basic navigation tool - but don't waste your money on this higher end model. The blue tooth phone compatibilty - large reason I purchased it - is useless. It won't play through the FM transmitter so it only broadcasts out the rear speaker, which isn't loud enough to hear while driving! I emailed them thinking I was just doing something wrong and they confirmed -- how ridiculous! The other features through the FM transmitter are a waste as well -- you can buy a cheap transmitter for your IPOD and get the same functionality. Ultimately, don't waste your money on this model."

What's great about it: loading satellite is a breeze less than 5 seconds What's not so great: Doesn't come with a pouch to carry around
"My first time to experience ease and precise navigation, i located a place not even on the phone book, and it's really easy to use.
For a while i thought GARMIN is the best of the best, now i can say tomtom welcome to the competition.
Love the device and tomtom.
Bluetooth connection to my phone, calling through the device, telling street names and distance PRICELESS!!!
Amazingly nice and fast response and rerouting time."

most useful purchase in a while!04/20/2008
By johnfromchicagofrom Chicago,IL
What's great about it: very customizable, sleek, no failed poi search yet, lots of 3rd party apps, mapshare, bluetooth. What's not so great: fm transmitter not that good (but useful anyway),User interface is not very friendly(read below),
"ok...guys...so I have been using my tomtom 720 for like 2 months by now. So here is what i think is good and bad. The map -I have the latest map version(7.15v) and i feel the 720 has a pretty detailed map (atleast in my area- chicago). There are some recent developments which obviously has not been updated in their maps, but which i hope will be added as they roll out with new maps. Routing - If you choose in the preferences to ask every time which type of route to plan, it will always ask about the options for routing like fastest, shortest, avoid highways, bicycle route, walking routes and limited speed. If you choose the fastest route, it will come with a route that thinks is the fastest. Now here is the thing - sometimes, the fastest route might reach you at a place 1 minute earlier than an alternate route which might cut short the distance by 10 miles. So you have to be careful here. Once you put in the fastest route, tap on the bottom right corner and go to find alternative - then choose fastest route again - Now it will come with the route that is 1 min longer, but 10 miles shorter! And the good thing is, you can compare how much time you loose and how much distance you cut short in that screen itself - It will say the original route was this miles long and this minutes duration in that screen itself!!! So, before accusing the machine of bad routing , put a little thought into the widely customizable routing engine it has and use your brains! Walking routes are handy as they also use oneways to reach you at a place through walking - cool! Also, you can customize your route by viewing the details of the route in text or block by block or whole map and then choose which road to avoid, which road to go through by just tapping on those roads! All these that i have talked about also brings in light about one bad thing about tomtom - It is more user friendly for a little tech inclined person. For a grand pa or grandma, i think garmin would be best. But it is not to say that the basic routing techniques can be used by anyone not very tech inclined. Poi database - lots and lots. I actually use the bigger poi database that does not come standard with 720;) If you do a little research in the net, you will get it;). I have never came across a shop or place that is not in the tomtom list so far. The smallest little shop that i thought might not be in tomtom came up in the poi database. that really surprised me. Well, anyway, you can download so many pois for free from so many places. But, i have not yet used any pois other than the tomtom official ones! Blue tooth- very very handy. It downloads all your contacts from the phone! It shows all your contacts on the screen and you can call straight from the gps. The audio clarity - better than my blue tooth headphones! FM transmitter - poor. The loudness has been recently increased after firmware update to 7.481. But the signal is weak. I think it has something to do with the power cable. When i move it around, it changes. If i disconnect the cable, you will still get it. But it is very unpredictable. In general, 90% of the time, i have had good signals. The audio quality is questionable. I have noticed that, though the radio says it receives stereo signals, I really feel that the audio has been downmixed to mono inside the gps and send as stereo signal. So, overall, you hear mono signals which greatly degrades the audio quality of a song when you hear it through the fm transmitter. I would think, the audio quality should be much better with the cables connected to your car audio. But my car audio does not have a line in jack. 3rd party apps - lots and lots. That is one reason why i choose the tomtom. I already have a small calculator, a flashlight tool, a mileage calculator with detailed graphical views, an event logger(tracks your gps anywhere you go and keeps that info in the sd card), a video player - So many thanks to the developers. I dont think any other gps has this many 3rd party apps. Mapshare technology- It is a very useful concept. You see a small error in the map - you mark that location for correction - once you get the time, correct the error - save it - share it with all the other tomtoms! At this point, I have 16,000 errors mapshare corrections! Whoa - so many errors on the map? They may not be huge errors, it might be something like a poi is 100m away from its actual location or something like a road has been blocked for traffic or something like that. But useful, anyway. No other gps has this . But Dash is coming out with some revolutionary ideas. Traffic - Never used this feature( I dont have a data plan with my cell phone, nor do i have an rds-tmc receiver). I dont know how updated or how useful this feature is. Value for money - I would say it is a good value."

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON Tom Tom.04/20/2008
By hcjones69from providence forge, va
What's great about it: sleek devices What's not so great: outdated maps
"tom tom is focused on the european markets/maps. tom tom is headquartered in the Netherlands and a visit to the website confirms their focus on europe. the US maps are 5 to years out of date. my neighborhood has been here for more than 10 years, and my address and most of the streets here are not on their gps'. after calling tom tom numerous times about this they tell me that I need to buy the latest maps; I did this just last month and the maps were still out of date. tom tom gets their maps from teleatlas. I called teleatlas and they sent me a file that they included in the latest map update. this update contained my address and the missing streets. Yet I paid $100 for Tom Tom's latest maps and somehow they still aren't up to date. Hence, the focus on europe. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON Tom Tom."

"grrreat GPS!! took it out of the box and used it on the way home!! had a harman 810, no thanks after using this! lots of different voices to choose from online and on the cd with it. quick recalculating when you make a wrong turn, need to get an SD card so you can load it up with lots of POI's and more TTS voices. It has everything right out of the box but it's nice to have more! bluetooth works wonderful, the reason i bought it, the harman 810 wasn't compatible with my phone. All around Excellent purchase!!"

What's great about it: Size, Options and Tech Support What's not so great: Won't support Blackberry 8830
"I turned in my Magellan Maestro 4250 because of issues and a co-worker suggested this TomTom. I turned my on and I have been very happy so far.
Pros: 1) Great tech support 2) Love the web site and the ability to customize the screen and voices 3) Like the many options on the screen and the ease of use
Cons: 1) ust can't find a unit that will support my blackberry 8830 2) Garmin comes with a cable to use your iPod with the unit - the TomTom does not but it only cost $15.00 dollars at Best Buy 3) Other units come with a carry case so you will need to invest $30.00 dollars for a case. This is needed since you don't want to leave the unit in the window while it is parked in the summer or for safety."

Lots of features03/05/2008
By LovetheTechfrom NC
What's great about it: Bluetooth, good screen, customizable, easy to use What's not so great: FM Tuner can be frustrating, pairing can sometimes be frustrating, dealing with Tom Tom's site.
"I got this in January for my Anniversary and have used it almost daily since. I use it in as my primary hands-free device. I love how loud the speaker is and how clear it can be. Most people do not ask me the "do you have me hands free?" question while I'm on it either. I have had a few times where it was obvious and they had or I had a hard time hearing or understanding. Mind you when the battery is low the bluetooth struggles.
This device gives you easy to follow directions, re-directs you when you miss a turn or step, tells you in PLENTY of time what you need to know, including if you might need to change lanes or when you have turns coming up so you can get over. You can read all the features it has and the price so you see it is a great deal. I have never had a problem with sat coverage. I like how you can put in an arrival time if you desire and how it counts down how much time it will take for you to get to your destination. I also like how it has an independant speedometer. I do recommend this product. You won't be disappointed."

Tom Tom 720 GPS03/03/2008
By KCeezyfrom Norfolk, VA
What's great about it: Small, Portable & Bluetooth capable What's not so great: None so far
"I recently purchased my 720 and I gotta say that it really is a very helpful unit. It's portable and compact (not like some you see) I have a small sports car and this is just the thing I needed the 4.3" screen lets you see and hear your directions will being connected via bluetooth or the the built-in speaker. Thus far it works like a charm and I couldn't be happier with it. If there is a con I'd say that linking with the car stereo using the fm tuner was a pain with my Iphone but other than that life's good."

What's great about it: Large Screen, Good Features What's not so great: Absolutely Terrible Support
"I bought this in Nov of '07. I've been trying since then to get the download of the latest maps by their so-called "Latest Map Guarantee." It takes over 10 hours to download then crashes at the end. When TT's tech support finally answered my e-mail, they told me that my connection was too slow. I have a DSL connection. I have several friends that have Magellans. I really wish that I would have purchased one instead of the Tom Tom."

"Really a wonderful GPS unit. Nice large screen, text to speech, bluetooth, easy to use... and all for a price that's in between the $149.00 bargain GPS and the much higher cost units priced between $599-$799. If your looking for a GPS with a ton of features for a moderate price then this is the one for you. I love it!"

By Countywifefrom Memphis, TN
What's great about it: FAST and ACCURATE What's not so great: Mount is not very good
"I purchased this unit for Christmas in 2007. I am amazed at how accurate the GPS is. It even shows the dirt road that goes around my barn. We are even in the map program which is a miracle because most manual maps do not even recognize our address because we are so far out in the country. The 720 is very fast at recalculating or redirecting a new route. It also works great with the IPOD going through the 720 GPS unit. Details show up on the 720 and can use just by touching the 720 screen. Voice is loud and accurate. Gives me plenty of time to change lanes to turn. Unit miscaluclated the 1st day I used it trying to redirect me back home, but I think it was something that I did and not the unit. Great GPS unit."

What's great about it: Big screen, FM, Bluetooth, Nice design What's not so great: Map details, couldn't get some things to work
"I love the bluetooth features and the fm transmitter -- reals nice design too -- nice "sizzle". However, I purchased this for the "steak" and it left something to be desired. It gets me from door to door, no question, but when I'm on the highway the map details disappear. Zooming out shows more map detail, however the 720 automatically zooms back in afer several seconds (quite annoying). The screen just turns to "two lines" for the road, and all else disappears. In reading other reviews, I too, could not get the clock to change when crossing time zones. It does confuse "yards" and "miles". Right by my house the map was inaccurate. I've used other units with where this was not the case. I know that mapshare is a nice feature to correct the maps, but it seems to me that this is a necessity. Reminds me of the old marketing maxim: "If you can't fix it, feature it". Overall, I think this product is a good and useable, howver, there are some annoying aspects to the mapping functions."
