Tom Tom GO 91009/17/2007
By StLouisDavefrom St. Lous, MO
"I really like my investiment in the GO 910. The selling points for the device are the millions of preloaded destinations, directions and the 20gig harddrive...tons of room for MP3's and Pictures! Plus, it has has an audio out funtion that can plug into any AUX ready radio to play your tunes back. The only real downside to the GO is trying to stop a route once you start one. I have the 910for 3 months now and still haven't fugured out how to stop a route!"

Works way better than expected.09/17/2007
By Moveritefrom San Mateo, CA
"We just got it 2 Days ago. It's the same price at Best Buy as on the web, and Best Buy offers real person customer support, so we got it here. Plus BB stocks the item and has demos so I brought my co-pilot ( my wife) to compare the programming between Garmin and TomTOm and she liked Tomtom better. This works way better than we thought. Straight out of the box I plugged it into the computer and downloaded the updates and latest maps for free. We went to visit my older son in Sacramento from San Mateo on the day we opened it. On the way there was an accident after 20 miles and we took an alternate route. As we traveled it tried to get us back on the original route, but after 15 minutes it corrected and reprogrammed the new route. On the way back, it took us home on a route we always thought was longer, but we saved 20 minutes. In Sacramento we went apartment hunting for my son in college at the dorms. It took us exactly to the location every time, over a 20 mile radius to six locations. Seeing an address in the for rent section of the paper, typing it in and then getting there in a town you don't know is great. Even when we stopped for gas or food off the route, it immediately corrected and got us to the right place every time. My younger son, a 10 year old, was able to program the itinerary and locations. We used it to locate hotels and restaurants, as there was a convention in town and everything was full. One thing, if your place is not in the POI list, type in the name, such as "Embassy Suites" and usually it pops up and will be added. We have not used the Blue tooth or FM yet, but so far we see no reason to spend $ 200.00 more on the Garmin 660. It missed one item all weekend, an exit had a north and south direction and we should have gone North, but it took us south, got on the other ramp and had us exit immediately north instead of just taking the north exit. It could have had to do with it being faster that way and missing one light. Other than that one thing, this works perfect. Use the Computer voice selection instead of the human voice and you get more information, such as "Left turn in 250 feet at Watt Ave, then left again". "Go one quarter mile then left on El Camino". You can touch the screen and the latest command will repeat and update if you forget as we were listening to the football game on the radio. Every one in our family loves this."

Buy a Garmin09/12/2007
By Ptown27from Houston, TX
"Bought this unit, and the mapping software is horrible. You can put in an address, and follow the directions, and end up in the middle of nowhere. Traded in the original for a new one with the same results. Best Buy finally traded it for a Garmin which we love."

Solid Purchase09/11/2007
By DavidLfrom Manhattan, KS
"I have been involved with the purchase of GPS navigation units for our agency for more than two years but had not purchased a unit for my own use. The department uses a mixture of Tom Tom units and Garmin. I had done quite a bit of research regaring the 720 prior to purchase. My first unit was exchanged due to a handsfree issue but have not had any problems with the second. There have been other reviews regarding the lack of accessories available for the unit and some of the early issues with some of the aspects of operation. Overall I am very satisfied with its operation. I am quite sure the problem with the ETA estimation will be solved in the near future. This unit has features comparable with much more expensive one of other manufacturers and I believe a solid product."

I Once Was Lost...But Now Am...09/11/2007
By LawGalfrom Brooklyn, New York
"A TOMTOM GO 720 Owner!!! And I will NEVER be lost again with this device. I cannot tell you how awesome it really is. The screen features are colorful and bright...and so easy to read. I travel throughout the tristate area a lot so I needed a navigation system that was really user-friendly and easy to understand. On top of all that, it's fun to use! When I accidentally miss my exits because I wasn't paying attention (radio on too loud!!!) my TomTom instantly re-calculates my location and gives me a new route. I also enjoy the many voice options and other fun features. I especially love the Bluetooth feature which lets me talk without my uncomfortable wireless earpiece. I highly recommend this product if you hate wasting time (and expensive gasoline) getting lost!"

Could be much better09/10/2007
By morestufffrom Mass
"I've used the TomTom GO720 for about 30 days. Before buying the 720, I had a Garmin M5 for 3 years. Pros - You can update maps and download updates from other users. It has a large screen. Less expensive than similar Garmin model. Fast calculations. Lots of voices to choose from. Cons - Bluetooth has horrible interference w/ blackberry 8700. Real-time traffic and weather doesn't work w/ blackberry 8700. FM transmitter too soft, have to crank up volume. No voice command on USA model. As a GPS, this model works well; but the extras don't work really well and you could buy a cheaper TomTom if you wanted a basic GPS with a large screen."

An overall great product which does everything ver09/10/2007
By Reviewer1from San Jose, CA
"I have found the TomTom Go 720 to be very reliable. Certainly it doesn't contain every POI that I have searched for and that can be a little frustrating but overall it has found and guided me to locations. The basic GPS portion seems to work well. Connection to satellites has been great, usually within seconds and I have had no problems with reading or seeing the display on the windshield. As for the other features that one is paying extra for, these have seemed to work well too. As for the FM transmitter, if you simply turn up the volume on the TomTom, it works quite well over your car stereo speakers. I have put a couple songs onto the TomTom and they play just fine. I have also connected up my iPod and the interface is quite similar to the iPod's for playing all of your songs. The bluetooth connectivity has done good and seems to be comparable to other cars that connect up in terms of ease of use and call quality. The TomTom Home software seems to work quite well as well....and I was thinking about downloading the Mr. T voice to guide me around! Overall, I have been very satisfied with my purchase."

Good enough09/10/2007
By sunbeerfrom Boston, MA, USA
"There are some really great things about this gps system:
1. easy to program simple navigation stuff 2. lots of different voices and languages to choose from 3. the ipod controller and bluetooth phone connection work seamlessly--very cool 4. you can buy an add-on antenna for traffic. 5. screen is big, clear and easy to use
Some things I wish were better:
1. route planning involving more than a few places is cumbersome 2. POIs are not great 3. I've had SD card troubles with mine--customer support is a big pain. Specifically, the people are nice, but they consistently have me calling back to talk to the next line of people, whom I can't call directly. So I've spent too much time calling and waiting.
All in all it's a pretty good device. The 720 is, I think, still a little buggy. But it's clear that TomTom are working to resolve issues."

Disappointed09/09/2007
By AK99507
"I used a loaner TomTom One on a recent trip and it worked GREAT. So I thought purchasing the upgraded TomTom 720 would be the way to go, but I am pretty much disappointed in the features of this more expensive model.
First of all, the navigation is the same as the One, so I am pleased with that.
But, this model doesn't even have a manual and when I called TomTom, they weren't able to help me with that either. There is no manual for the United States! What company would release a product with NO manual?!
The FM transmitter is a total disappointment. I don't think I'll be using it and that is one of the reasons I purchased this model instead of the One.
I plan on recording my daughter's voice but haven't done that yet, I am hoping at least this feature works right.
There are a lot of menu options but I don't think it is too cumbersome, as other reviewers have stated. I've been able to figure it out and once you're familiar with the menu, it's not hard to navigate through.
Another big disappointment is that there are NO accessories available on TomTom's website. They all just say UNAVAILABLE! What's up with that? I do see that Best Buy is offering a case, which I will be ordering after writing this review. I hope TomTom is able to catch up and offer the accessories very soon.
Overall, I am disappointed in this purchase, especially since it was several hundred dollars more than the One. I feel that the advanced features are not worth that added cost. And I should have a manual for what I paid for this model! Crazy!"

Great product over all !!09/09/2007
By Atiffrom Orlando, FL
"Every thing is great about this product except the FM transmitter. One of the reason I bought this model instead of the $100 cheaper ones is because of the ability to play music through my car speakers via fm transmitter. However the sound quality is compromised when using this feature. Other than that this model is great in every way. It is slim and easy to carry around. Love it."

Would be great if everything worked09/09/2007
By Anothereviewerfrom NY
"Read the specs for this unit. It supposedly has every feature you could possible want. What all the specs and words on the box don't tell you, is that most of the special added features don't work or work so poorly they are unuseable.
First, as a basic GPS, this unit is good. The maps are not perfect. It's routing algorithms are not perfect. It can do some pretty crazy things but as far as current model GPS systems go, its no worse or better than anything else. It gets things right where Garmin gets in wrong or somestimes its Garmin who has it right. The 720 has its own set of quirks, not any worse or better than anything else.
But the list of features that don't work is where the 720 loses points.
First, this unit has real time traffic updates, weather updates and unit updates that work by pairing your phone with the GPS. It sounds good but the 720 is extremely picky as to which phone/carrier combinations it will work with. It is so picky, that it is safe to say most phones will not work with it. So these features for most will be unuseable.
Second, you can pair your phone with the 720 for use as a speaker phone. Pairing is more similar to pairing a bluetooth headset so most will be able to pair the two. But, call quality is so bad, you probably don't want to use it.
Third is screen contrast. The 720's screen is easily washed out in bright sunlight. The Garmin unit I had before did not suffer so severely. The windshield mount that comes with this is so short that the 720 sits practically right on the windshield. This exposes it to light a lot more and makes it hard to reach in some cars.
Fourth is the Tomtom method of Favorites and POIs. For reasons unknown, Tomtom only allows a limited number of favorites. So, you have to store most of your favorites as custom POIs. This is not so bad except for the was Tomtom lets you store Favorites and Custom POIs. The unit does not store the address anywhere that user obtainable. So for instance, if you store a Favorite or POI as "Joe's Restaurant", and you want to give the address to someone, you can't retrieve it from the unit. Even if you navigate to that place, the 720 only shows you the street and town. House number is lost. By default, Tomtom wants to save them as the address. Thats really no good as you will never remember what a bunch of random addresses are. What I wind up doing, is saving them as "full address - name". Its very messy and hard on the eyes but at least I have the information.
You could move to a Garmin unit and get most of the 720's features but Garmins cost a lot more. So I guess look at it this way, you are buying a basic GPS at a lower price. If by chance some of the added features work for you great, you got some bonus stuff. If they don't work for you, you didn't really pay for them. If this was advertised as a basic GPS, it would get 4 stars but as a full featured GPS that doesn't live up to its hype, only 2!"

Buggy performance, poor menu system09/07/2007
By bribrifrom Rochester, NY
"I got this after looking at all the reviews and feature sets and thought this would be perfect. Navigation wise, it seemed to meet my expectations and the voices were a nice touch. However, the menu system is overly complex, nearly impossible to use while driving and definitely not recommended. However, the real killer was the poor hands-free speaker phone feature. My phone was listed as being fully supported and I was able to make one or two calls. However, the microphone is horrible on this unit, which makes it virtually useless for any car with cabin noise. Also trying to call certain people causes my phone to freeze up completely. My phone has never once frozen in a year of use. I couldn't even power the phone off, I had to remove the battery to get it to reset. This unit is going back to the store ASAP for a refund."

Best decision after a lot of research.08/26/2007
By Clicksandfrom Farmington, MN
"I had never owned a GPS before this purchase. I had spent a large amount of time researching them and was leaning toward a Garmin 660/670 and Dreamed of owning a 680. Until I saw the TomTom 720. I have been extremely happy with my purchase! Especially since I had a lot of hesitation buying a TomTom, mainly because of the brand recognition of Garmin in the US. The features that stood out on the TomTom: (These feature were not available on the Garmins I looked at in my price range.) -!!!!Multiple Waypoints/Destinations and Route Plans- This feature worked great for me as I travel to multiple businesses in a given day. I can plan all of my destinations in to a route plan including adding via points. I can plan and save the routes days ahead of time. -Editable maps - Easy for me to use. Some, less technically savvy may have a little trouble at first. You can mark the map for correction while you are on the road. Then go back later an make the appropriate correction, decide if you want it to be temp or perm, and if you want to share it. You can edit, add roads and POI's. -MapShare- I like the concept as it is still a new service and only offered on two TomTom models. It will get better as more are purchased giving it more users. Corrections are shared and you can set your preferences of what you want to accept from other users. You can sync the Tomtom in its cradle through your computer. Requires the use of TomTom Home software which it comes with. -Size, I love how thin it is. The 4.3 screen perfect size. I was able to see it fine in bright sunlight. -Help me! - I won't get into too much detail. It allows you to quickly find help. The main feature I like in it is the Where am I? It give you precise location and GPS coordinates. This will eliminate the problems I have had in the past trying to explain to a 911 operator where I am. -Voice Navigation - record your voice for the navigation prompts. I recorded my daughters voice and it worked well. I also tried the FM transmitter which also worked well. The first time you start the device it may take longer than normal for its first time obtaining a satellite fix. Additionally, from the TomTomHome software you can download patches that will speed it up even more. After applying the GPSfix's, it took only about 10sec to go from off to having its satellite fix. As for the cons: -It does not come with a case. I have been having difficulty finding the TomTom case #9M00.001 in stock. They seem to be backordered everywhere. Unless you want to order from the UK. -Not until looking at the manual do you find out MapShare is only available for a year after you purchase. After that you will need to upgrade your map to continue receiving shared corrections from other users. As of 8/26/07 Tomtom also has not released any information as to if this will be a fee based service after the first year. -POI- This is a small issue, but it is the one thing I liked on the Garmin. For restaurants you could select the cuisine to narrow your selection. The TomTom will show you restaurants but does not have them categorized. -Removed Feature - In the user manual you will see information on Voice Recognition. The feature would have allow you to speak the City, Street, and Number of your destination. The story I have heard is that this feature was removed just prior to the US release. Not sure why. As I understand this feature is available in the UK models but they do not come preloaded with US maps. In summary, with all these features plus its screen size, its overall size, and lastly the price, I couldn't pass this one up. I am very please with my purchase. I hope I have provided you enough info to help you make a decision as well. -Clicksand"

"This unit is very good looking, solid and has some great features. The screen is gorgeous and the route calculation is pretty good. The only thing I don't like about it is that the estimated time of arrival functionality is not accurate at all---a 2 hour trip the unit would calculate as almost 5 hours but would change as we got closer. Garmin has TomTom beat on this."

Best TomTom Ever!08/18/2007
By PugsRulefrom Bloomington, IL
"I've had this for a few weeks...Very good investment! This is by far the best TomTom device that has come out. Extremely easy to use and reliable. The MapShare option allows you to make ammendments to the map instantly where in the past one had to submit map errors and hope that TomTom would have that correction made when a new map was released. Has lots of cool features aswell like recording your own voice instead of using one of the preinstalled ones. Also has the option to change pointer, comes w/ several preinstalled but you can upload any picture of your choice as long its no larger than 80x80 pixels. Built-in FM transmitter is a plus. Would highly recommend it."
