What's great about it: Sound, price
What's not so great: Nothing
I bought these because I have an M-Audio Audiophile 192 sound card and have been very happy with it. M-Audio products are oriented toward musicians. The AV30 speakers are very clear, with good bass, midrange and treble. They sound great at high volume with no obvious distortion. Nice to eliminate the subwoofer from my desktop and very handy front connector for IPOD or CD player. These speakers are an incredible value for the money. Paired with an Audiophile 192 sound card, they are superb.

What's great about it: Sound Quality
What's not so great: Left speaker will quit within a year
I mix on these and they did a pretty good job for awhile until the left speaker started dropping in volume. Now it is very noticeable so much so that in a recent recording I thought I had messed up when I tracked a guitar part that was panned left. It turns out that the speaker is at fault. I researched this issue and found that it this is very common. I will not be replacing with another one of these and will look elsewhere.
The frequency response and clarity is very good for mixing and they sound good while they last but I didn't get much time out of them. I will either mod them to be passive speakers or if I get real ambitious pull the amp outside of the cabinet and/or try to find the faulty component and replace it. Either way they are now useless for their intended purpose. I've got cheap amplified speakers (no good or mixing) that I've had for 15 years that are still going strong - so at this price point I am very disappointed in the quality/engineering design work that allows these speakers to fry themselves in such a short period of time.
If you want to spend another $100 or more within a year on speakers then feel free to go for it but I would save my money and look for something that has more longtime reliability.

What's great about it: The sound
What's not so great: Nothing
Most computer speakers are easily over driven and bass deficient. The M-Audio Studiophile AV 30 speakers can be played loud without distortion. There is no need for a subwoofer with the AV 30.Technically these are inexpensive studio speakers, for a computer they are great speakers.

What's not so great: expensive, bad sound, gets very hot
I've had these for over a year. I use them with my cable and blu ray. These things sound terrible out of the box. They do get loud though and the back of the left speaker housing the amp gets very hot. This is not good at all for electronics of any kind.
The highs are distorted and has muffled bass. Why is this: cheap capacitors on the circuit board for the amp and crossover networks for the speakers.
I bypassed key capacitors with much more expensive film caps which really opened up the sound and cleaned up a lot of distortion and used better speaker wire-it was the only way for these to emit bearable sound which they do in spades now.
I rated them low as they are in stock form. If you plan on using them a lot I recommend having a fan blowing air on the back of the left speaker to keep the heatsink cooler. Inside there is a heatsink but the metal part of the back speaker is also a heatsink.

What's great about it: Easy to set up, cabinets look great
What's not so great: Sound is eh for the price, sound bleeds past headphone jack to the speakers
The speakers themselves look great and the sound quality is alright. Unfortunately the first set I got didn't work properly. There was no audio coming from the right side speaker. I have read that this is a common problem. I exchanged them for a different set and it works great for the most part. Sound is alright but it could be better for the price. They are located on my desk at work so most of the time I use headphones. Well that is where they kinda fail. When you plug in headphones, a bit of sound still bleeds through to the speakers. It isn't bad a low volumes but when you crank it up you can hear it. I just keep them off and I plug in my headphones to the PC. If you are looking at these for the headphone jack then skip them. Invest in a headphone amp instead. I wish I did.

What's great about it: Great highs and sound stage
What's not so great: Flat lows
These can be a great pair of desktop speakers if your musical pallet is limited to classical, acoustic, or anything that doesn't have lows. If you listen to anything else (rock, country, blues, rap, gaming, etc) you will be disappointed. The highs are great and it sets a good sound stage at any volume with very limited distortion, but the lows are flat and do not exist. There is a HUGE difference between the AV30 and AV40! If you are looking at these speakers, do yourself a favor, spend the little extra and get the AV40. The AV40 are what I would expect in a studio monitor from M-Audio... the AV30 are not! I am shocked and disappointed that M-Audio would put out such a product that clearly does not accurately reproduce the full range in audio at any price... they should have stopped at the AV40! I will be returning these speakers!

What's great about it: Appearance
What's not so great: Sound Quality
If you crank these things up more the 3/4 volume, it distorts like crazy! Even with bass boost OFF it still sounds like rubbish while at high volumes. They do look attractive but they do not sound too good! You are better off with the BOSE companion 2. It's the same price and the sound quality is a lot better! The bass was depressing and very weak also. JUST GET THE BOSE COMPANION 2!!!!!

What's great about it: Nice sound for the price
What's not so great: Left speaker gets HOT! Nothing a little fan can't solve!
I owned the Logitech Z-5500 and sold them. Too boomy for me and the sound seemed way too processed for me. Don't get me wrong the Z-5500's are a good sound system for those wanting the boom. I was looking for a pair of speakers that had a more natural sound without spending mega bucks. The M-Audio Studiophile AV 30's were it.
These speakers sound great, clean, crisp and clear. I found that you need to raise them to about ear level to get the full effect. Although cranking the volume (it can handle it) up I believe these speakers perform much better at lower volumes (about 1/4 on the volume knob). I've read reviews where these speakers take a week or two to break in. It's true, I found after a week the bass seems more deep. One thing that concerned me was that the left speaker gets hot, I mean HOT!! Blowing a fan keeps it much cooler.
Great desktop speakers for listening to music or watching movies for 99.00.

What's great about it: Sound Quality
What's not so great: Nothing yet.
Just purchased these speakers. I was looking for an upgrade to the 6 year old speakers I had. The old speakers were doing just fine, but I wanted something a bit louder, punchier, with lower bass. I sure found them with these.
I went to BB just to listen as I have been reading alot about speakers and wanted to listen to the AV 40s and Z523s. Of course the 40s were out of stock and the Logitechs were not hooked up. The 30s were choice C for me. I spoke with the salesperson ( who makes mixes on his computer as well ) as he steared me towards these. I made the purchase with the intent on promptly returning if they did not do what I wanted. These speakers far exceeded what I wanted!!!!
The profile is not too big... but looks like they can throw sound ( they can ). Plus, its 2 speakers not the 5.1, where are you going to put all those on your desk?
Sound quality is there, even if you don't tweak the EQ of your media player. For the ITunes EQ, I use the Bass Reduction preset, and turn the higher frequencies up about 5-10 percent, but also use the Bass Booster on the speakers.....
For under 100 bucks......... please let me know if you find something better but I have to say they sound great.

What's great about it: price, sound quality, size, overal performance and quality
What's not so great: nothing
I bought these speakers today and I have no regrets. It was down to the Bose Companion 2 speakers or the Studiophiles. The speakers are overall, much better. They both have excellent acoustics and mid/high range tones. Don't expect these to replace a sub-woofer, but the base is surprisingly strong, for the form factor. Don't forget that these have an optional bass boost feature which add a bit more punch to the bass. For the price, these are the best you can buy.
