What's great about it: Sound, setup and price.
What's not so great: Non so far.
"I just purchased this over the weekend but I have been looking for over a year at this and other products like it. I am very happy with the ease at which it set up and how well it sounds. I have to admit that I am a bit put off about the volume difference at the lower levels but over all a very small thing. I also saw that one reviewer had an issue with not being able to play your T.V. through it and that is not a problem. It is plainly stated how to in the instructions which are very well writen."

What's great about it: Pretty good for it's type
What's not so great: Nothing really....will be explaining in review
"I first saw this as a demo at our local Best Buy store and I thought it was pretty good for it's kind. By kind I mean, it's a Home Theatre in a Box (HTIB). What I don't get is why people expects more than it can give or any other HTIB for that matter. If you want something really good and loud enough to wake up your next door neighbor, you wil need to build one from scratch which could get expensive. To expect more from it would be like asking a Honda Civic to perform like a Lamborgini or a Porsche. With that said, you get what you pay for and this one is actually a good buy.
Any average Joe will like this product but not someone who's audio savvy."

What's great about it: Great sound, easy setup, looks great
What's not so great: None
"1st bought a panesonik unit but had trouble with the remote speaker system took it back. Then bought a an expensive 123 systme with only 2 speakers and a woofer, didn't care for it ( no base) so then after reading reviews I got a Sony hdx 501w. Love it.
Best system I have found. Great sound, easy to hook up and it is easy to use. Remote speaker system works well. I am thrilled with the system. I listen to alot of cd's and they sound fantastic.
I had a HD movie on Sat. When the buffalo seen came on the sound woke up my oldest son, I was in the shower and could hear the sound. As most of the other reviewers have said, Sony has done a great job on this sytsem. I don't think anyone will be disappointed. Highly recomend this and give it a 5.
The ony Improvement could be the remote control. The layout of the buttons is a little backwards but I have adjusted quickly to that.
Rarely do I ever post reviews of anything anywhere but this is worth it. Especially if this review saves someone the time and effort I have spent ( packing and hooking up then packing back up)looking for a good system. Look no more. THis is it."

What's great about it: Gr8 Upconversion, easy to install & Gr8 sound
What's not so great: No wireless adapter included
"Great system! Originally purchased the Panasonic SC-PT950 1200w wireless rear spkr w/ upconvert system... it was terrible. System did NOT upconvert as it should have. Panasonic SUGGESTS you purchase THEIR HDMI cable for it to correctly upconvert. We returned it and purchased this one... works like a charm. I was able to use my existing HDMI cable and even connect the XBox 360 to the system. Great picture and quality sound. Wouldn't trade it for anything else... I LOVE it! The Digital media port for our iPod Touch is amazing! Excellent choice!"

Great system

What's great about it: Sound quality, DVD HDMI output
What's not so great: None
"I read the previous reviews and felt compelled to respond. I found the system to be lacking in the volume department as well. I found out why that was. Hook up a analog audio signal from an audio source - be it a sat/cable box or something - then hook up a fiber optic audio cable. The difference is quite shocking. Average volume for analog is 20-25 for decent sound. Average volume for fiber optic is 12-18. There is quite a difference in sound quality and bass analog vs. digital. I find myself having to turn it down for fear of neighbors getting angry.
I have to say the fiber optic cable made all the difference. I too was skeptical, but I purchased a Dynex 3ft optical cable from Bestbuy here for $20 and was amazed. So much so I purchased another for my PS3. So now the PS3 runs a HDMI for videio and Optical cable for audio. Blue-ray sound is now quite nice. Prior to the optical cable for the ps3 I had the a/v red/white connector hooked up to the back of this sony system for an analog signal - the ps3 HDMI cable was on the tv.
I do wish this sound system had at least 2 HDMI Inputs and 1 output. That would have been nice.
When this sound system is connected with Fiber Optic ...it is a wonderful sound system. With analog, it doesn't sound as great as it could.
I love this sound system, and the dvd player is wonderful. I would recommend this to anyone I know. Yet again it is Sony at its best."

What's great about it: automatic speaker configuration; great sound for the price
What's not so great: wish dvd was a seperate unit from the receiver. more inputs wouldn't hurt either
"great little dvd/receiver combo for the price. of course one pays a little more to have the sony sticker put on the front of it. too bad it isn't manufactured by someone other than sony (hate the company). i installed this in my media room and it gives great sound without breaking the bank."

What's great about it: Looks Great, Sleek/Clean, Sounds Great, Easy to use, Easy to Assemble
What's not so great: Wish it went a bit louder
"This is my first Home Theatre, and I am extremely pleased with it. This is ideal for someone who wants a great home theatre without spending thousands on various speaker, a receiver, and components. It sounds fantastic, is very easy to use and I was surprised at how fool proof the setup was. The most time consuming part of the setup was assembling the front right and left speakers on the tower. It took about 30 minutes. All the cables are color coded, as is the receiver with where you need to plug them in. Has an HDMI output for your DVD player that comes with the receiver and I am amazed by that as well. I previously owned a Samsung 1080p upconvert DVD player and this Sony upconverts to 1080i, however it is MUCH better than the Samsung I had. The speakers are very sleek and modern looking, and brings a great contemporary look to your living room/basement/sports bar or wherever you may place this. The Center Channel is about a foot or so wide and only an inch or so tall, so I have it set up directlty in front of my TV on the TV stand, and it looks great! The MAX colume output is 35 I believe, and I watch movies at about 20 or so. Anything under 20 it is kind of difficult to hear, so I just wish that the volume level was a little different. It has an automatic calibration mode, which is incredible in its own right. Instead of testing and tweaking all of your speakers individually, which can take hours, you just plug in a microphone (supplied) into the receiver, set it up at ear level wherever you will be watching your TV, and it runs through about 30 seconds of test tones and automatically calibrates the distance the speakers are, and volume levels. All-in-all, I highly reccomend this product to anyone who wants a nice Home Theatre without dishing out Buku bucks on a Bose or other type system."

Fantastic system

What's great about it: The unit sounds awesome, it looks good and the ipod dock is the cherry on top.
What's not so great: the head unit is kind of deep it barely squeezes into my TV shelf.
"The system has plenty of power. I had a 6 year old Sony Dream System and this system blows it away. The old system never had a problem very reliable so I had to go with Sony again. The included microphone calibration was easy to use. The Ipod dock is really nice it allows you to view the music playlist on the TV you control everything from the remote. Very simple speaker setup. The sub sounds way better than I imagined. I figured the sub would sound like my old system, but it sounds like a sub with amp built in. It shakes my windows. I definitely recommend this unit the 500/i is an amazing deal. I looked at the Sony DVIS10 unit and it didn't sound any better than the 500/i system and it cost $300 dollars more. I guess you are paying for the tiny speakers. I hope this helps."

What's great about it: sound quality, ease of connnection, ease of use
What's not so great: needs dvi input
"Bought this unit to replace an older sony system. Got the unit home and began to set it up. Color coded system on speakers and wires make setup a breeze. Upconvert standard dvds to 1080 AWESOME. Sound quality is awesome as well, very clear. this thing is so easy to use that there should be a law against it. It does offer multiplt rca and rgb inputs for multiple systems. I was able to condense my surround sound , dvd, cd, players into one unit. not only that when you do turn the system up to about 24 it shakes the windows. It has plenty of sound to spare and them some. The auto calibration mic also also really helpful. if you are looking at buying a good affordable unit GET THIS ONE."

What's great about it: 1080 up conver. Bravia connect, looks good
What's not so great: sound quality.
"Bought this system, hooked it up and was expecting a great sounding system. well i was very dissapointed. i first tryed a CD i thought that there was something wrong. i had to turn the volume up to 24 to really hear it. no matter what format i tryed it all sounded horrible. then i put in a DVD and still kept going through the different formats and not really any better. there is no adjustments for bass, the sub has no seperate power. i then tryed to hook up the speakers to my Sony 5.1 receiver and still did not like the speakers. I am packing this system back in the box and bringing it back to the store. i am going to buy just speakers and use my reciever."

What's great about it: Easy to understand directions and set up. Great sound.
What's not so great: Havent really found any.
"I installed this on a Sony Wega wide screen projection telivision and sounds great. It is in a 14x14 foot living room and has power to spare. I also installed the rear speaker wireless kit on it and it works and looks great. The auto calibration feature is good to get you started but after using It I went into the advanced settings for the speaker settings and tweeked them to where I liked them best. I also used the hdmi hook up to my tv and it makes the dvds I play look a lot better than the old 3 plug hook up.The Am and Fm radio reception is good. Ive read people have complained about the volume only goes to 35 but they dont tell you that starting at about 26 the increases get extremely louder. At 35 it is VERY LOUD and extremely clear. I run mine at 30 to 32 and its LOUD AND CLEAR! I would highly recommend!"

What's great about it: Nice sound, lots of features, easy to set up, nice built-in front adjustable speaker stands.
What's not so great: Only goes to a max of 35 when even at 12 you can barely hear it.
"For an all in, one this system is pretty good. The speakers are modern looking and very clear sounding even on max. Lots of nice sounding bass too. System has plenty of power and lots of features. On the bad side, you have to have it turned up to 50% or more before you can really here the system. I thought for a 1000 watts total, it should have had a better spread than that. The unit is also somewhat retro looking, not so modern. The other thing I wasn't pleased with it is it is not an open carasel unit. You have to load each disc one at a time. I wish it was more like my sony 5 disc cd player it replaced, where the whole carasel extended. Other than that, it is a great sounding unit, especially with action movies and jazz music. I like it more each day. I would recommend this system for the lower to mid range buyers. If blasting your neighbors house down is what your looking for, go spend about 4 car payments more and you can do better than this system."

What's great about it: Front speaker stands, nice style, Ipod connector, 5 disc dvd changer, auto calibration
What's not so great: none so far
"Bought this system a few weeks ago and it has great sound and bass...Very easy to set up the suto calibration and even with the volume turned way up the bass is not overwhelming...it is nice and thin not bulky like some other brands, so it does not take up a lot of space in the entertainment scenter...Great buy for someone not wanting to skip months of food for Bose"

What's great about it: Decent Sound; very loud; aesthtically pleasing; easy to setup; useful interface with ipod
What's not so great: sound isn't as crisp as top tier systems;
"I am very pleased with this home theater system. For the price range I was looking in, I think it gave me the best bang for the buck. The system is very loud, although not as crisp as some of the top tier Bose systems (still pretty good though). Setting the system up is very easy and took about an hour. Its great for playing DVDs and music. It looks great in my living room with my Sony TV. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to a friend."

What's great about it: Good bass,Good quality
What's not so great: VOLUME, LOOKS
"I completely agree about the volume stuff. i was also pretty sad when I found out that the max volume is only 35. But I would say it depends on your room size. I just got a samsung HDTV and hooked this baby with it, it sounds perfect . I got no complaints ...the only bad thing is the volume and also the looks..it looks a little outdated but who cares it it works fine."
