No Mistake Here   02/14/2008
By RollinRoger from Sevierville, TN

What's great about it: Lover Everything About the Item
What's not so great: None

"Was not sure when I bought the unit about the true picture quality in my home versus the store. Once I got the TV hooked up with the new HD DVD player, and 5.1 surround sound receiver I was amazed. The unit is very user friendly and sleek in appearance. I really appreciate the 120 refresh feature as it dramatically reduces the "ghosting effect" that is typical with action sequences. I would recommend this unit to anyone with no hesitations."

We love it!   02/11/2008
By us10402

What's great about it: Clear picture and sound
What's not so great: only one "acceptable" output

"We love this TV! There is clear picture and sound, it looks beautiful... a wonderful LCD TV. The only con that I can think of is that apparently there is only one "acceptable" output (though are are many other outputs) for our dvd player and our Playstation 2 (at least according to my husband). One of the best purchases we ever made."

A fine TV with a few minor quirks   02/11/2008
By BillH from De Forest, WI

What's great about it: Beautiful picture, very good sound, lots of inputs
What's not so great: Picture adjustments can be complicated, some minor motion blur, pricey

"This is a very fine TV overall. Picture quality and color are great. Sound from the built-in speakers very good with good range of treble and bass. External speakers really not needed unless you want to scare the neighbor kids.
There is a bit of blur with fast-moving subjects, but it's minor and not bothersome. A similar Sharp LCD TV shows a little less blur when displaying the same programming (football).
Sometimes the backlight seems too bright in a dimly lit room, even when turned all the way down. That may just be me; it looks fine to my wife, who prefers a brighter picture than I do.
I would certainly look at a Sony XBR-series TV again if I were in the market, but only after I compared it with the equivalent Sharp models. The Sony sound is just a bit better than the Sharp, but the Sharp picture is just a little bit, well, sharper.
We're very happy with our choice.

What's great about it: EVERYTHING
What's not so great: nothing

"This tv is absolutely amazing. It has more than enough inputs to make even the biggest tech-freak salivate.
It has the best display I have ever seen, and the sound is fantastic, too. The variety of inputs lets you hook up multiple HDMI devices, your PC, DVD, HD-DVD or Blu-Ray players, multiple game systems, etc. The tv even allows you to label the inputs through the on screen menus so you don't have to remember which input goes to which device. There are also a TON of customizable options for each input that can be set.
The menu system is wonderful. It is easy to use without the manual, and very intuitive. You can customize the picture and sound in so many different ways, it blows your mind. But there are also preset options that are awesome if you don't want to fool with intricate settings.
The remote control is the best pre-packaged remote I have ever come across. It instantly works with any other SONY devices, and does not need programming. If you do need to program it for other devices, it's a snap. PS: the remote lights up for you, too.
If you want to get the most out of action movies or sports, turn on the motion enhancer for a really amazing experience.
The timer function is the coolest thing ever, if you want to wake up to a certain channel. And this feature can be preset for different days of the week, weekdays, weekends, whatever you need.
This is the most advanced flat-screen on the market. If you want th best flat-panel on the market, GET THIS TV. This model is EXACTLY like the XBR5, except it has a matte-black finish on the border instead of the a glossy black finish. You will save yourself a lot of money by buying this model instead of the XBR5.

Best 46" TV for the money   02/10/2008
By kgmn from Plymouth, MN

What's great about it: Non glare screen, picture quality
What's not so great: none

"This TV is awesome, the color and ease of installation and being compact. Also the non-glare screen is outstanding, I have huge windows and would basically have to have the blinds closed so I could see the TV screen on my old TV. This one for the money and quality with the XBR Engine is outstanding."

What's great about it: great picture, ease of use, great sound
What's not so great: price

"I have looked at t.v. for months . went into Best Buy to buy a Sony. came out with Samsung lnt4671. as it was cheaper. mistake. the picture was at times distored, had green around peoples faces also green spots on their clothes ect. well after 3 days of that I went back to the store and got the Sony which did cost more but worth every penny. the picture is just wonderful. I can't say enough about the service I received from Best Buy and the Greek squad. they are truely the best."

GREAT for movie watching!   02/10/2008
By CoralGoose

What's great about it: MANY MANY inputs for later growth!
What's not so great: Clock doesn't display on TV

"I agree with the other reviewers - the tv picture is GREAT, particularly on HD shows. DVD playback is better with upscaling (an older, poor quality Barry Manilow concert was really awful until I switched to an HDMI cable and turned upscaling on). Another thing...standard def can actually be a bit worse on such a nice tv. I sometimes switch to cinema mode that actually blurs the picture a bit and makes it closer in appearance to my old Sony tv.

To touch on a few features others didn't mention...there are TONS of input plugs for just about anything you could ever want to hook up. I thought that 3 HDMI connections were a bit few, until I realized that my ATT Uverse hooks up via the component connections, DVD goes into HDMI and my computer can hook up to the VGA port. My old tv had a "video" setting to switch to the VCR or DVD. Now, there's an "input" button and you switch from the different connections. Each connection can be renamed to "real" names like BluRay, DVD, Computer etc, instead of "HDMI 1", "HDMI 2" etc. Because the TV has so many inputs, my "home theatre" receiver is almost an antique. I originally bought it because my old tv didn't have inputs for newer DVD equipment. I wish I could plug my external, surround sound speakers directly into my tv. Until then, I'll be waiting for a Sony Receiver to have all of the features I want. I'm sold on a Sony receiver because it'll be able to be controlled through the TheatreSync feature of the tv so that you can just "watch a DVD" and have it turn on the DVD player, receiver and TV without having to do it all separately (similiarly, the sleep timer will turn it all off).

Another cool feature, you can do picture in picture with different inputs. For example, you can watch tv and have the internet (from your separately purchased computer) on the other side. Sometimes, I see something on tv and there'll be a reference to the website so I want to hop over and check it out. You can do the same with DVD, etc...but you choose only one signal for sound (you can't listen to TV sound and DVD sound at the same time).

Another GREAT feature that wasn't on my 10 yr old Sony...a wake up alarm. I saw this at a luxury hotel in Europe and it was really nice. You set it to wake you up on a particular day, or M-F or every day at a particular time and particular channel/volume level. If you don't have a cable box, you can have it select a cable channel. This worked well...but I then switched to ATT Uverse and the tv can't control that. I've told it to use the TV antenna and switch to a local network channel. When I actually wake up, I manually switch it to Uverse for my morning news in HD.

Since the TV has a clock, I wish it would allow you to display the clock. It will do so SOMETIMES, but I would have liked it in the corner all the time (particularly with standard def when the corners are black anyway). I found a clock that has 2" numbers and will put that next to my tv.

The only issue I've had with the TV is the size and weight. I thought I had planned ahead and made sure I had furniture to support a 85lb large tv. One thing I've learned is that the weight ratings on some of the TV furniture you'll find are not correct (the furniture claims to support 250 lbs but it doesn't, in practice). Also, most TV furniture for a 50" tv is very low, 16-22". I know of very few people who want to look DOWN at their huge tv and I am not interested in watching tv while sitting on the floor. I didn't want to mount the tv on the wall for various reasons related to the house construction. I bought shelves that bowed under the weight of the tv, despite assurances that this would be ok. Finally, I purchased a custom piece of furniture that is 30" tall and would support the tv and will tie the new furniture to the studs.

Another thing...I wouldn't advise putting the tv facing a window because the window reflection does show. The matte screen helps significantly, but it is disturbing. I finally put blackout curtains over the windows and changed to a torchiere lamp in the corner (instead of using the center overhead room light that also reflects against the tv screen)

Top of the Line HDTV   02/10/2008
By busdriverrandy from Golden, CO

What's great about it: Best Resolution and Color Processing
What's not so great: None at all

"I looked at this model for a year and it is the best picture available today. This HDTV is the perfect match for my Blue Ray DVD player. Buy this and you'll be well pleased.
The LCD display is crisp and bright beyond other technologies. I chose the 46" set since it weighs only 85 pounds. This is within the weight range for a $20 TV cart on casters.
The effective size of a 60" set is gained by wheeling it 19" closer. Yet, the detail is so much more interesting that the effective screen size is secondary.
The remote is easy to use and has larger print on the buttons than most.

Excellent TV   02/10/2008
By JayOH

What's great about it: Picture, clarity, sound, ease of use controls and features.
What's not so great: Motion enhancing stinks.

"This is our first HD TV and it is fantastic! I do not have anything else to compare it to as far as ownership, but if you are getting one, take a good close look at them in the stores and you'll see the XBR4 is the best around. Spend the extra dollars and get this TV. The motion enhancing that they advertise for this model is somewhat of a joke. It makes watching sports seem like you're on drugs. Just turn that feature off. If you notice things aren't right out of the box, play with the features and setup. You'll find what your looking for. If you're a hockey fan and get this plus a HD package with cable or DirectTV, you can see and watch the puck the entire time! No more loosing where the play is!"

Great LCD TV!   01/29/2008
By ChefGene from Dallas, TX

What's great about it: Fantastic Picture with Blue Ray and HD Source, Sports

"I did a lot of research and my decision came down to the Samsung 4671 or this Sony. Read that Samsung had some problems with 120H refresh so I got the Sony which was a great decision. No problems with refresh. Sports look amazing. Most major sporting events are broadcast in HD and you can see the texture of the field when watching football it's so clear. Movies on blue-ray look like you are watching it being filmed in front of you wtih the 24p setting. The tv itself is very good looking and it performs well. I picked up the tv and set it up myself. Set up was easy. The menus are very user friendly. There are lots of picture settings so it took a couple sessions of making adjustments before I got the picture with the tones I like. I recommend this tv to anyone. The price was a little higher than the Samsung but it's worth it."

True 24p   01/16/2008
By crunchywyte from FL

"This is one of few sony models(XBR4 and XBR5s) and only LCD's that will playback a blu-ray at true 24p! Alot of TV's claim to support the 24p input, but do so by using the 3:2 pulldown. Once you see video in 24p , it is very hard to watch it regular anymore!"

phenomenal !   01/08/2008
By pete9313 from brightwaters, NY

What's great about it: color, sharpness, ease of use
What's not so great: none

"wasnt sure i ever wanted to spend this much money for a television, but, boy is this just amazing!...color, brightness, sharpness, surpasses anything else i have seen. and DVDs become front-row movie theatre seats.
I had GeekSquad install, and they could not have been any better, or any nicer...and they didnt take much more than 1/2 hr to hook up TV with DVD, DVR, and home theatre...amazing
But the Sony XBR4 is SO worth the extra money...
make sure you get best HDMI cables you can, because they do make a difference
how does one ever watch a 'regular' TV anymore, after seeing this?

Love it!   01/04/2008
By Happy734 from Cincinnati, OH

What's great about it: Great picture. Love the 120 HZ effect and the motion control.
What's not so great: None so far

"This TV is amazing. HD looks incredibly 3D. I love the motion control option. When enabled it removes the judder experienced in content such as fly-overs in nature shows. Smooths out the picture wonderfully. Especially when watching something like the Planet Earth Series. This TV is worth the extra cost. I paired it with the Sony Bravia Home Theater System.. model HT-SS2000. I connect it to my TV with an HDMI cable... and connect my Directv, Sony Blu-ray player, and upconvert DVD/VCR recorder all into the AV receiver with HDMI cables. The set-up works together beautifully."

What's great about it: Too many to list
What's not so great: $$$$.$$

"All you have to do is look at this TV and compare it to every other set in the store. You WILL SEE the difference. Picture is GEORGOUS even when using a non-HD DVD player; just make sure to use some decent cables. After all, if you just spent 3000.00 on a TV, don’t skimp on a cheap HDMI or Component cable set. YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED!! Ask a lot of questions and DO look around. Remember BEST BUY will price match, and the extended warrenty is ~$150.00 less than other stores."

Extremely Satisfied. Highly Recommended LCD   12/19/2007
By MeGo from Boston, MA

What's great about it: Everything
What's not so great: None

"I purchased this TV after doing a lot of research online, and discussing it with several people in forums, and everyone told me that I would not regret it if I bought this TV. They were all right. This TV is just breathtaking. The picture quality is perfect. More than enough inputs for your components, a lot of customization options for picture quality, and the TV itself looks like a work of art. I would highly recommend this LCD TV to anyone. I realize it is a bit pricey, but definitely worth it."

This is the best TV i've ever had   11/15/2007
By hk401

What's great about it: good quality, sound is great
What's not so great: High prices, but it is the best lcd in the market

"i got this sony xbr4 46'' today. I hooked up with my xbox 360 and hd dvd drive in component 1, the picture look really good, i have hd dvd "300,transformer,and king kong" these were looking perfect, and sharp, the sound really good, if you dont have 5.1 channel sound surround then you dont have to buy it cuz this tv have really good sound. If you play a Standard dvd for my opinion i think if you sit close to yours sreen, you can see the quality picture is NOT really pretty, and alot of little dot appears in the screen, therefore you must sit somewhere around likes 6 or 8 feet away from the sreen you can see the quality of standard dvd better. Tomorrow i will go to my friend house and borrow his PS3, i will compare b/w my hd dvd and his blueray and see which one looks better."

An outstanding television   11/10/2007
By Sabres

What's great about it: Great picture, easy to set up and use
What's not so great: None

"I was a little nervous at first, when purchasing this set, with the price tag the Sony Bravia line has on it, compared to other manufacturers sets. However, once I got it set up and running, I was blown away with it.

The set up for the set itself was extremely easy, and took just minutes to get it up and running. Very little tweaking was required after the initial set up. The quality of the image matched what you see on the showroom floor, and it is definitely something that falls into the 'what you see is what you get' catagory.

I can't comment on the sound, as I'm using an external AV solution, but the picture is outstanding. Coming from a CRT to an LCD, my first impression was that the images almost seemed to be 3D in my first viewing of a true HD signal with this set.

It was definitely worth every dollar.

Best TV. Period.   11/10/2007
By tbizness from New Jersey

What's great about it: Great Picture, Great Sound, Adapts To Your Picture Source
What's not so great: None

"I originally picked up the 46" Samsung T4671 and was extremely disappointed for many reasons (see my other post on that TV). I returned it for this Sony XBR4 and cannot be happier - Sony never fails for TVs. This machine delivers a great picture out of the box and is extremely forgiving on lower quality picture signals.
Then when you plug in a HD source, this thing really shines. I could not be happier and would highly recommend this TV.
I have mine mounted approx 4 feet off the floor, and it looks great.
