Happy until the dead pixils

What's great about it: Bright and Sharp! HD Blue Ray Looks INCREDIBLE! What's not so great: Dead Pixils within 2 months of purchase!!!!
"This had the best picture in the store! none other came close. fell in love and took it home, my friends couldn't believe how real everything looked. 2 months later dead pixils show up upper right hand. They developed into a long 20" red & blue horizontal line. called sony and was given #'s of techs they deal with. someone came to see it and ordered the new screens! quick turn around time! whole thing took 1-1/2. today is sun. aug. 03, 08. the screens will be installed tuesday the 5th in my home, hope it goes well! go with the new SAMSUNG! It is the only tv that beats this one! (it came out after I bought this one)"

Awesome TV

What's great about it: Great Picture What's not so great: The extra glass around the edge makes it wider than necessary
"I love this TV. After second guessing myself for a couple weeks after the purchase I'm now convinced this was a solid purchase and a great deal. This tv has a great picture and plenty of connections. My dilemma was that I have a relatively small living room so my wife wasn't sure how a 52" would look when our old tv was about half that size (a Sony 27"). I was torn between getting a 46" and 52" LCD, but in all of my research nobody ever said they wished they would have gone smaller. So I went with the 52 and after replacing our entertainment center it fits into our small living room fine. Yes it took a little getting use to, but HD looks so much better than what we had before it was worth it. I'm using directv for my HD and the content is so crisp and clean. I love it."

What's great about it: its a sony What's not so great: poor black contrast, poor sound, menus hard to navigate
"I have had this tv for 4 months now. I bought it even though the metal and glass surround around the screen made it look not as sleek as the samsung. However I went with the sony name. I have not had a single problem with the televsion. However the picture although great has been disappointing especially with the black color. The black color does not show up as well and appears more as grey. The sound is poor and the volume has to be turned up quite high to hear. The 120 hz motion technology has not been that noticeable. Trying to change display etc can be a bit challenging. Overall although a satisfactory television, considering this is a sony it is a bit disappointing."

What's great about it: Clear picture, great 1080P quality, PC monitor connection without any over scan What's not so great: PC connection with HDMI treated as TV not PC
"I bought this one last X'mas to replace my old SONY projection TV. I like SONY TV, always high quality and full function. When I connect my media to my old projection TV on my TOSHIBA 42" plasma 720P TV, I alway have to deal with over scan problem -- the display area too big or too small. Need spacial software to fine turn my PC signal. But, when I connect my media PC to this TV with VGA port. I can set my resolution to 1920x1080 without any over scan. And the picture quality is great! I use my media PC with POWER DVD to play back blue ray movie -- the picture is great. I did try to connect my PC to HDMI port with a DVI to HDMI adapter, but the TV treated it as TV signal instead of PC signal."

What's great about it: Exceptional video quality even on non HD channels What's not so great: Have to turn up sound up to 40-50 just for normal hearing
"Had the tv for more than a year and loving it. It stays on good 10hrs a day, still no problems, picture is great even on non HD shows. Only thing is that, speakers have to be cranked up to 40-50 just for normal hearing. I'm just too lazy to hook up my external speakers to it but other than that its the best TV ive ever had. Best part of it (for me!) is the price of the tv has gone up by 300 bucks since i bought it. This is unreal in technology world."

What's great about it: Everything! Color, Clarity, Definition, Brightness, and yes, the 120Hz system! What's not so great: $$$$
"Even though it's a big price tag, it's worth it. This unit is beautiful. I LOVE it hanging on my wall in my home. It has a very stylish framing and contrary to many posts, does NOT distract you from the picture. How could it, the picture is PERFECT! . Okay, so I'll admit one small issue.... . The picture does lack a little bit (very little, but noticeable) on standard definition channels. It's definitely made for a seating position at least 10 feet away when viewing standard def. However, you get that thing on some HD 1080p picture and you can sit 2 inches away...it's beautiful. . Oh, and my XBOX360 and PS3 look INCREDIBLE on it."

What's great about it: size, quality, clarity, color, no glare, an awesome piece of furniture What's not so great: Flaws in SD feeds are emphasized, but who cares? No other cons encountered in 9 months.
"The house is dusty, the grass is long, and I haven't washed a car since I bought this TV. I won't get off my couch any more. My wife wonders why I laugh during shows that aren't funny, it's because I laugh out loud every day at how rediculously superb this TV is. I question whether I deserve this TV, and the 3-yr no interest plan I used for it and the 2 Bush-brand glass stands I bought. 52" spoils History Channel and other SD broadcasts, so you will spend more time on great HD feeds like Discovery HD and HDNet, and the quality of NASCAR and NFL will change your world and ruin your lawn. This TV will exceed your requirements by a laughable margin. This makes 2nd class citizens out of Plasma's, and sends ALL Projection Units to the trailer park."

Great TV if it makes it

What's great about it: size, clarity, crisp picture What's not so great: Didnt' make it three months
"As with many of the other reviewers here, I did plenty of research. I'm big on Consumer Reports, and this was the best buy in the size and price range. When I set it up, I closely examined the screen for dead pixels. I found only three (which is within oem spec). However, there is a major difference between dead pixels (gray/no action) and what I've encountered. The problem began with three small vertical lines towards the upper right corner of the screen. The cluster of pixels act as if they are not getting a signal. Only red and green shine through. Then they started grow, horizontally. One of the lines is now 16 inches long. I immediately called Best Buy (didn't drop the $550 for BB extended warranty) to explain what was happening. BB tells me they only deal with tv's 27" or smaller in the store, I'd have to call Sony. Here is where it get's interesting. I've never had to deal with Sony's warranty service before, and boy was I in for a shock. Sony doesn't do any service work themsleves, they vendor it out to local companies. I get a call from the service tech and he improbably diagnosed the problem over the phone. He tells me they're going to order a new LCD panel. Normal delivery time 2-3 weeks to get one. However, they are on back order (common problem? idk) which will add another 2-3 weeks to the delivery date. So I'm going to be watching my new $3500 tv for six weeks with three extremely long, extremely annoying lines running down the screen. Now I don't know if I just got a Lemon? I can deal with that, it happens. What I'm upset about is the two options you have when you buy this TV, or any high dollar item from Sony/BB: Spend 15-20% of the items initial cost for the extended warranty or be stuck dealing with a defective item while Sony takes their time to get around to fix it. I personally don't like either option."

What's great about it: Sony Brand, AWESOME Picture! What's not so great: Price
"This TV is awesome, awesome! The price might seem high - but trust me, you get what you pay for! The picture is clear as can be. I use a receiver for my components - all work perfect. The Sony Blu-Ray hooked to this TV is crisp, sharp - wonderful! This TV is worth the price - it is beautiful to watch when on, and beautiful when off. Art on the wall, all the time. What's great about it: Similar to 3D, Color, Crystal Clear Display, 120Hz Refresh! What's not so great: Can't stay home to watch it all day
"Purchased from Best Buy with a Price Match! Gotta Love it! Could of bought it somewhere else but Best Buy people are always happy to help and made my purchase experiance exactly what I wanted. TV Box was much larger than I thought. When you pick it up have a LARGE SUV or have Best Buy deliver it (recommended). Unpacking was easy, cut two straps and the box comes apart to unvail a beautiful black glossy screen. I strongly recommend using HDMI, and there are 3 total on the TV. Comcast HD is Very Good, but some HD channels have pixelation. NOT the TV but COMCAST issue. Many features, too many to list but out of the box it works fine. I haven't had to make any adjustments yet. I recommend buying a Samsung DVD-1080P7 from Best Buy, use it with a HDMI cable, then watch Transformers. I swear Megatron was about to come into my living room! the 24P on this thing is amazing, I didn't know what they meant by that but it looks REAL!!! If you are considering a TV, Buy this one! It costs more than the others but those tv's cant even compare to this. Great Job Best Buy and Sony!"

What's great about it: Picture quality; easy menu, nice remote What's not so great: Has a little trouble with a lot of full screen motion, remote needs line of sight
"First off, let me say that I'm not going to try to state what's already been said in the other reviews. I'll just give some opinions on it after a couple days usage. I did not read the instruction manual on purpose to give you an idea on how a non-expert would handle/view this TV. I'll read the manual in a few days. Note: I have not used HDMI cables yet, so I've yet to see 1080p on it. local news in 1080i looked pretty darn good, though. +Pros: +the picture is awesome. I don't feel LCD comes close to plasma, but this one is still pretty good. +the sound is awesome for a tv. this doesn't matter much to me, since I'm going to be running my stereo with it 99% of the time. +good glare handling; other tvs have a polished front. This tv works well in a brighter room. +System menu is quick and intuitive. Some of the setttings will require me to dive into the manual to figure out what's best. Very similar to playstation 3 menu. +Used PS3 to upconvert a movie to this TV in widescreen. It looked fantastic. +Played a ps3 game over S-Video connection and the detail was remarkable and clean. Can handle moderate gaming action without much studder. +Easy to unbox. Warning, it's a 2 person job. I'm a fit person and can easily lift 100lb TV, but the bulk and packaging reaffirm my opinion that you don't want to bust this tv coming out of the box. -Cons -Regular TV tooks terrible in wide screen adjusted mode. I strongly recommend you upgrade to a digital or HD format with this TV. This con isn't really a flaw with the TV, but it will accentuate flaws in your older signal. If you chose not to upgrade, watch TV in 4:3 format. -only 1 coax hookup: I list this as a con because of the first con. I would like to hook up an antenna and watch local channels in over the air HD, but cannot because my cable is going into this slot. Will require extra hardware if you want that kind of setup. -glass border makes it harder to carry: the instruction manual specifically states to not pick up by the glass border. -Remote requires line of sight to work. That's annoying. -Has picture in picture, but I don't think it works on the same source. In other words, the second picture needs to be from a different source. (I'll have to read up on it, YOU SHOULD TOO.) -There was some studdering when I took the camera in my PS3 game and rotated the camera view as quickly as possible. The game isn't playable when this happens, but I was hoping the TV would be able to keep up. -Warranty. 1 year warranty on this TV is absolute BS for the price. almost all other tvs have a 1 yr as well, but that doesn't make it right. This thing should last a minimum of 5 years for the price we paid.
Sidenotes: This TV is a 52", but it's 56" wide. It's a good idea to keep this in mind when shopping for a stand, entertainment center. The manual also wants I think a 4" boundary around the TV for airflow.
The manual states not to position the TV in a place where it'll receive direct sunlight. Something about damaging the LCD screen. I don't know why sunlight's a problem, but it's probably a good thing to know BEFORE you buy it, Sony!
Happy TV shopping."

The wife originally said no but loves it now
04/30/2008
By Reddogs77from Boston, MA
What's great about it: Crystal clear picture, Sony quality, streamlined looks What's not so great: I need more wall so I can get an even bigger XBR...
"When the wife finally caved and reluctantly said "Ok, let's get the TV..." she had extreme hesitation. Let's face it, it's a TV that is a bit above the norm in terms of price. However, once the TV was installed on the wall and the crystal clear picture was coming thru, she was a convert. It was wonderful to hear "I'm sorry honey, you were right..." Made the whole purchase worth it. As an XBox360 owner who plays Halo3 and other games, the 1080P quality of the picture can't be beat. (My boys love to play their WII on it as well... when I let them.) Bottom line: I know that there are other TVs that are equal in size and perhaps comparable in quality to some degree, however, I can only say that I have never had an issue with a Sony TV in 30+ years. You really can't go wrong with a Sony."

Great Buy...Period.
04/29/2008
By IANnFlotownfrom Florence, KY
What's great about it: Unbelievable picture quality...especially with Blu-Ray and X-box 360 with HDMI. What's not so great: Sound is actually decent...but if you are spending this much on a TV, $300 for a decent surround sound won't hurt.
"All I have to say is that this TV is absolutely unbelievable. There are so many options that you can utilize to tweak your picture the way you want it. Watching movies are unbelieveable. It makes you think that you are right behind the camera because it increases the frame rate. I considered the Samsung as well b/c of it motion reducer, but this TV blows it out of the water. I guarantee you won't disappointed. Every time my girlfriend comes over to watch movies, she comments about how sweet the picture is every time."

What's great about it: Picture, color, remote, menus What's not so great: Too many options
"This television is a replacement for a 50" Sony Plasma television purchased several years ago. The plasma looked good, but this looks great!! The screen glare on the plasma was very bad - we were trying to close blinds, etc during the day to be able to see the screen. With this LCD, we can have all of the blinds open and not even notice it. The high-def pictures are incredible. The only negative that I have about this television is that there are a ton of picture settings/options, and I don't know what all of them do. After buying a calibration DVD, some of them make sense now, but the manual could have explained some of them better. But, for such a great picture, I'm willing to learn some of the setting options."

Best LCD black levels.
04/28/2008
By GMA1from CA
What's great about it: Black levels for LCD, natural color, no glare. What's not so great: cost
"For a bright room, this is the HDTV to get. Now compared to the best plasma's (Pioneer Kuro, etc.) the contrast and black levels are not quite as good, but compare it with ANY LCD, and it's the best. And because it's an LCD it reflects little to no ambient light. My living room has many windows, and is very bright, this HDTV looks great even at high noon."
