What's great about it: Live view, fast focus, lots of parameters to customize, fast frame rate
What's not so great: No auto focus in live view mode

"This is a great "jack of all trades" camera, usable by amateurs and pros alike. Fast frame rates are great for sports shots, high iso shots are noise free (even better than the 50d), sensor isn't "over packed" so there are less lens/small apeture problems, and it has live view.
I've heard some say they would prefer the 50d but I'm not sure the extra megapixels are worth it, both for the extra money, and because the photos don't seem to have any better quality. And, I've never found a need for the lens corrections the 50d has to offer.
I only wish the 40d had the ability to auto focus in live view."

What's great about it: Picture quality is fantastic. Stop motion for action is terrific!
What's not so great: It's a bit heavier than other models and if you're shooting for long periods, like a football game, tripod is a must.

"I've used this camera to shoot my son's football team. It provides crisp, clear photos. The downside is the weight. If you're not wanting to hold it for long periods, then a monopod will work fine. But overall the picture quality is well worth the weight factor! Great product for the money, and the best part is that ALL my Canon lenses fit perfectly!"

What's great about it: Great price, nice ISO range over XSI/XTI
What's not so great: Gotta study the manual.

"I used the XTI and thought to hold out for the XSI...Glad I didn't. The 40D has great flexibility in a solid body. The kit lense package is better than buying the XTI/XSI and a comparable lense, at about the same price. The ISO range is much better than X series, as there is not jump from 800-1600. 50D looks like a winner too, but are you really going to print that many poster sized prints? At 16-20 and smaller you won't tell the differnce. I love this camera!"

What's not so great: Is a little heavy.

"I love this camera!!!! It is amazing!!! I am a rookie but I have taken some incredible pictures, especially of my kids in motion. I wish I would have waited for the 50d though, sick to my stomach I didn't, but Canon is probably working on a 60d as I type."

What's great about it: A great step up for canon, great for begining professional!!
What's not so great: price

"This camera is great!! not as quite good as the nikon d90 but of course this came out 1 year before nikon. itaccurately handle most shooting situations. For the more daring photographer Canon has partial and fully manual options. The ergonomics and controls are well-placed and easy to access. The built-in image sensor cleaning helps keep the pictures speck-free. Every single Canon EF and EF-S lens on the market is compatible with this body. This is a durable and dependable camera that will provide years of service.""

What's great about it: Speed, quality, value
What's not so great: Horrible neck strap

"This is the best camera I've ever used or had. I have friends with much more expensive cameras but this one take as nice if not better pictures. Very little or no maintenance required with it's built-in sensor cleaner. My friend has a $5k Nikon D3 and he is constantly having to clean the image sensor. I've had my Canon 40D twice as long has he's had his Nikon D3 and I haven't had to do it once yet. The only complaint I have is the neck strap. The neck strap digs into your neck with the weight of this camera. For $20 you can buy a padded neck strap and save your neck some pain. But other than that, you can't go wrong with this camera."

What's great about it: Good sturdy construction, fast, great picture quality
What's not so great: Takes a little more time to learn the features (compared to cheaper cameras)

"I upgraded to this camera from Digital Rebel XTi, which I loved. I "fell in love" with 40D the first time I saw it in a store and held it in my hands. It has a really good feel holding it, and it's very comfortable. All the controls are easily accessible. It works great. Great picture quality. It's quite. Has many features to play with. I totally recommend this product. If you want to upgrade from a Rebel, this is a great choice. A little note: when I had an XTi I wanted to buy a new lens for it--the same one that comes in a kit with 40D. If you buy the lens separate it cost about $580. So I saved that much, but than had an idea. I sold my XTi for $500, plus the money I had saved resulted in me buying the lens I wanted and a new camera. I am very pleased."

What's great about it: Great photos, High Quality Camera
What's not so great: Price, May not be easy for average user

"I originally purchased the Canon Rebel XSi and was proud of my purchase. 12.1 megapixels - wow, I thought I was happily satisified. Wrong! A GREAT sales associate at Best Buy quickly impowered my wrong purchase. When asked "why" I purchased the XSi - the only response I had was "I owned the Rebel XT and 12.1 megapixels." I didn't even convince myself. I returned the XSi in exchange for the 40d. RIght out-of-the box I knew my purchase was BIG. The camera feels and looks like a million bucks. It does take a little while to learn the settings - because they are different from both Rebels I owned. I am an Amatuer Rookie and I love this camera. It makes me feel like a pro. I cannot believe the difference in the speed of this camera. I was told by the Sales Associate "everything about this camera is fast". TRUE - VERY TRUE. If you are willing to take the time to learn this camera and alittle about photography - Purchase the 40d. Love this Camera! THe only reason I didn't give 5 stars - is this camera takes time and patience to learn and more than just reading the owners manual. It deserves 5 stars - even 10 stars. But it will take patience to learn to use it correctly."

"The camera itself looks professional and it fills everybody with enthusiasm. I used it to take picture at night of the city I live in and the result is amazing. There are actually many setting that you can play with on this camera. But if you found the right one, you will be taking beautiful shot everywhere you go."

What's not so great: Doesn't take movies

"LOVE this camera. I bought it to take place of our 20D to become the primary camera while the 20D becomes a back-up. The 40D is a vast improvement over the 20D and I thought the 20D was one of the best since I had it. You could not go wrong with the 40D."

What's great about it: Frame rate (RAW and JPEG), good kit lens (28-135 IS)
What's not so great: Learning Curve

"After years of using point and shoot cameras I finally decided to move into the world of DSLRs. I had been looking for the last year and reading all the reviews I could get my hands on for both the Nikon and Canon lines. Just to be fair I read about other cameras as well. I was settling on the Canon XSi and then talked to a few users of the 40D. The final straw for me was the size because the 40D fits in my hands much more comfortably than the smaller XSi. I didn't list that as a pro or a con because I think that's a personal preference. I did list the frame rate because I hope to use the camera for shooting sports, hockey in particular. I have enjoyed the range of the kit lens and the IS function as well. I'm looking forward to a lens upgrade for shots beyond the reach of the 128mm though. The IS coupled with the good high ISO on this camera has allowed me to take some great museum shots. Finally, the only con I listed was the learning curve. It's certainly not a bad thing, I just think that you need to be ready to read the instructions and search out advice on how to use your new camera. Good luck and have fun. I've had mine for a month and have already taken thousands of pictures."

"This is a great buy for anyone who is interested in photography, but doesn't want to, or has the money to buy a supper expensive cammera. This is an amazing cammera to use. I would recomend you buy a cheeper camera if this is your first SLR(especially if you are still unsure if you want to get into photography), but you should defenently buy this if it is your second or third and you are looking for an upgrade."
