EXCELLENT DEAL FOR THE SIZE01/19/2008

What's great about it: EASY AND FAST SETUP, FAST TRANSFERING, GREAT SALE PRICE What's not so great: SIZE OF HARD DRIVE 500GB DOES NOT GIVE YOU THE FULL AMOUNT
"After further research on pricing, customer reviews, and specifications on hard drives. This hard drive is an excellent deal for the price comparing to other manufacturers that are selling hard drives of 120GB or more at the same or higher price. I reformatted the hard drive first before I started to copy from FAT32 to NTFS. It went smoothly and but takes a little while to to a clean and good format. I notice one thing bad where the hard drive is 500GB where it shows a free space of 465GB and 79MB being used. That means you have 35GB unaccountable for and don't know why made due to a reserve. I recommend to get this hard drive for the easy setup and price if you are in search to locate a back up for all your files. Good luck!"

What's great about it: Looks nice What's not so great: Absolutely no instructions that are relevant.
"I bought this drive as an emergency back up drive. Our hard drive is on the brink of extinction and I needed something to back everything up before it goes. The drive came with no instructions on how to use it, other than how to plug it in. I don't know if my instructions just got left out of the box or what. When I plugged in the unit it did come up with a user manual. However, this did not explain HOW to use the drive. I went to the website and it was absolutely horrible. I couldn't find ANYTHING it was so poorly organized. One thing that was unsettling was in the FAQ there was a question about what to do after the drive lost all your information. If you know how to use an external hard drive then I think this one will be fine. But if you don't know the least bit about them, like me, then this will be a very frustrating experience. I do not recommend this at all."

What's great about it: Compact, Quiet, multiple interfaces What's not so great: 1 year warranty. none yet, we'll see about that....
"I got this item on a sweet deal when it was on sale. Lots of space. Very quiet, compact, fits just about anywhere. Comes preloaded with some software and the drive is formatted to a FAT32. I was able to reformat it to NTFS with no problems. Is working great so far. Has firewire, eSATA, and USB 2.0 interfaces. power button, front panet led light that indicates freespace. powers up and down along with computer. very convenient for saving power. only thing that was a bummer was the one year warranty from western digital. However, an extended warranty can be purchased directly from western digital for external drives. Highly recommended! SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT 2!!!! =("

Miserable Failure12/24/2007

"I purchased this drive two days ago to store all the videos that were slowing down my computer. After formatting it to NTSF to accommodate files larger than 4mg, I thrilled to be able to transfer via firewire. Today, it wouldn't even power on. I phoned Geek Squad, and was told it was likely a hardware problem b/c "WD's are no good." I brought it back to the store for testing, and was told it was defective. The Geek Squad rep. said he's seen this happen several times now -- units died after a week or were dead right out of the box. He recommended Seagate, which is what I'll try now. Problem is, the firewire version is only available online and I don't know if WD will recover all the data on their defective hard drive. Since these devices are often used as a backup for crucial files, I find it deplorable that they're so poorly manufactured."

"This drive is perfect for small work spaces. It won't take up much room but still provides plenty of storage. I tried the firewire connection first and then the usb. I found the usb transfers faster on my laptop with a dual-core processor and 2gb of ram. Setup was easy. Just plug it into your computer. I didn't use the included software. It is working fine without it. It also turns itself on and off with your computer. You don't have to do anything except plug it into your computer."
