What's great about it: 1080p output and Audio output What's not so great: Price and HD-Audio
"Purchased this player to replace my XBOX360 HD-Drive and a 1st generation Samsung Blu-Ray. Neither did the newest Audio formats. This handles all the newest audio formats but it may require you to do a firmware update. Picture quality is good and audio is good. For some reason I get a high static sound(with HD-DVD) when bitstreaming from player to Pioneer Receiver, but allowing the player to handle it, it is flawless. Overall, a great improvement for anyone wanting to upgrade an HD-DVD player. But to purchase just for Blu-Ray, get a different player since HD-DVD is dead."

What's great about it: Both formats well in single player. HDMI 1.3 HD audio support. What's not so great: Only one - 4:3 DVD content is stretched on wide screen.
"I wanted to enter the blu ray realm while not abondoning my old HD-DVD material and minimizing my equipment requirements. This has the added benefit of the bit streamed audio, which works great with my Onkyo TX-SR805. Boot-up is faster than my HD-DVD player, and the status lets unsuspecting users understand the delay. Guests used to think my HD DVD setup wasn't working as the player sat for 45 seconds while it booted. Firmware updates are easy and user interface is straight-forward. Image quality has been great with HD and DVD formats. I am glad I got one of these before dual format players disappear."

What's great about it: Combines HDDVD and BluRay into one player, great upconversion of SD-DVD What's not so great: A little slow recognizing discs, but that's the tradeoff
"Unlike the previous reviewer, I have had no problems playing DVD+R and/or +RW. I suspect that he has a problem with the way his discs are burned, or he needs to update the firmware and/or driver.
Thus far, I have had no problems playing any HD-DVD, BluRay, DVD, DVD+R, or DVD+RW.
QDEO up-conversion of standard DVDs looks impressive, as good as the Toshiba XA2 with the Reon Processor. In fact, I prefer the BH200 because the LG automatically switches to 1080p/60 with standard DVDs and automatically does 24p with HD-DVD or Bluray (using a Sony A3000 TV). My Toshiba XA2 would stay in 24p with standard DVD and cause very bad judder. I had to manually switch back and forth to get the best picture. The nod goes to the LG in this department if only for convenience.
This player passes the bitstream of TrueHD, Dolby Digital+, and DTS-HD Master to my Onkyo SR805 with no problems.
BluRay playback seems smoother at 24p than with my Panasonic BD30. This was especially noticeable with landscape panning shots in the Planet Earth BD discs. I noticed considerable judder with the Panasonic no matter how I set things, but none with the BH200. I'm not sure why, but that's what I can report.
HD-DVD playback looks every bit as good as with my Toshiba XA2.
Firmware updates are a must since LG has improved this product greatly since first release. There are 2 updates that must be performed: Firmware and Driver. The easiest way to do this is first, download the latest firmware from the LG Service website. (currently, in August, this is file name LG_BH_LV221BH_0620A.zip)
After downloading and extracting the zip, you can either burn to a CD, or copy to a blank USB thumb drive (I prefer the USB method). Upon inserting the USB or CD, you will get the choice to update. Follow the onscreen directions for the update.
After the newest firmware is installed, connect the player to the internet using the Ethernet port in the back. Enter the setup menu and go to the network section. In there, you will find an option to do a 'network update'. Select this option. This is the only way to install the 'driver' update. The driver update helps with disc compatibility.
For those who would like to keep their HD-DVD collections, but want Bluray as well, this is a perfect compromise without the need for dual players."

What's great about it: Great video quality, plays all SD and HD formats What's not so great: slow boot-up & load time, poor handling of 4:3 DVD, a little pricey
"This player makes a great "transition" player for adopters of HD-DVD now making the switch to Blu-Ray. It upconverts standard DVD quite competently. My only complaint is a lack of proper aspect ratio control for 4:3 DVDs, which are automatically stretched horizontally rather than offering the option of being displayed with sidebars."

What's great about it: Simple hookup and menus What's not so great: Price is little high.
"Picked up this week end. Upgraded from a Toshiba A2 HD DVD. Watched a HD Dvd before upgrading firmware and it played whole move with no problems or glitchs. Picture and sound is just as good as the Toshiba. Have a good collection of HD DVDs so wanted a player to support HD and Blu-ray. Had to put firmware on CD as firmware was to old to upgrade with network. Firmware loaded fast and with no problems and after it was updated just went in to network upgrade and it see the device software needed a update it updated in about 30secs and shut itself off. Powered up and watch a regular dvd and picture is great and no bars or green anywhere to be seen. Just a great picture but of course it was not as good as the HD DVD pricture. Just have to get some Blu-ray movies to watch. Menu and setup was so easy. You won't go wrong here."

What's great about it: It works & plays everything What's not so great: None found
"I was going to get the Panasonic, but since I have 3 LG HDTV sets, decided to stick with a brand that I knew worked & was backed up by service.Hookup was simple, one HDMI cable from player to tv HDMI,plug in ac power & you're done.Set TV to HDMI 1,turned on player & off I go!Prior to first play, loaded in the firmware update .Just loaded disc onto tray ,pressed close tray & it automatically started, loaded ,& turned off.For theatre like sound,I simply increased the audio volume.Test run with BluRay disc was with Independance Day.WOW!,last time that I saw it like this was in a theatre! No green lines, dropouts,or any other glitches.Tracking was smooth,I could mark a new starting spot & changing menus was a breeze.SDVD's were almost HD quality as well. The player recognizes a different format & switches automatically.BTW,as opposed to other players, disc loading took all of maybe 15 seconds.LG is really trying to make a name for itself in North America.Because of my experience with their products,I got a new LG cellphone the other day as well."

What's great about it: Plays everything, Easy Updates, Continued Support from LG What's not so great: Some disc glitches, mostly momentary and far between.
"Got it for $445 with a 12% coupon. Great price! Being a HD DVD enthusiast with nearly 100 HD DVD's in my collection and limited room for another player a dual format player was what I wanted and needed. At first I was really pushing towards the Sharp, but with the LG getting much better reviews I decided on the LG. Looking at pics on this site of the LG it does'nt appear as attractive as the Sharp, but in person this thing looks every bit of a $800 player. Sturdy, High quality build, Piano finish, touch-buttons (yes, you don't need to press them) and cool lights showing the type of disc look great. It also has a very easy setup with great menu's and many tweaks to get a awesome picture. The speed of loading surprised me too. Every disc I've tried has played easily, from HD DVD's/BluRays to DVD-RW. I have had a glitch or two but thats expected with something that plays everything like this does. Also the updating process has never been easier, just download the file to a thumbdrive and plug it into the LG, it does the rest for you. Overall a high quality great player thats plays everything in your collection."

The Best Option In HD Media
05/10/2008
By MrMMfrom New Orleans, LA
What's great about it: Plays All Formats, Plays New Dolby True HD and DTS Master HD with compatible Receiver What's not so great: NONE!
"I purchased this product because my Samsung BD-UP500 universal player all of a sudden stopped playing discs. I did a lot of research and found out that all of the problems with the LG BH200 had been corrected with the latest firmware update. I burned the latest firmware update from the LG website onto a blank DVD and completed the firmware update. It was very simple. After I completed the update the player was able to pass the new Dolby True HD and DTS HD bit streams to my compatible Onkyo receiver. The sound was simply amazing! So detailed and clear. The picture from the LG is simply amazing also. It is wonderful to now have equally impressive sound to match a glorious HD picture. If you have a large HD-DVD collection like I do, and do not want to get rid of your HD-DVD's or replace them with Blu-Ray, or if you want to get into HD media after waiting to see who would win the format war BUY THIS PLAYER! It is well worth the money."

What's great about it: dual format; great upconversion; sends new codecs over HDMI What's not so great: price
"Even though I became aware in December of 2007 that Blu-ray would probably win the format war, I have an extensive collection of high def DVDs in both formats. I have owned quite a few models of both formats (Sony BDS1, BDS300, BD S500, Samsung BDP1000, BD UP5000, Toshiba HD-A1, A2, A35). Was eagerly awaiting the Samsung BD UP5000, but too many glitches, including audio dropouts and failure to play a number of both Blu-ray and HD-DVD titles. Waited for the new promised formware update, but it never materialized - the one that did appear did not solve the problems I was having. Tried the LG, and was disappointed at first. Numerous audio dropouts with standard DVDs and no multi-channel output of the new codecs (True-HD and DTS-HD MA). Then came the March firmware and all was well. Has played everything I have thrown at it without a glitch. I have read of the "green line" bug and I never had it, but the forums on the net report that those who had the problem had it no more. Sleek styling and fast loading. I liked it so much that I bought another for the bedroon system. 1.1 and rumored compatibility via firmware update to 2.0. Very happy camper!"

What's great about it: Plays all three formats What's not so great: Does a bad job of it; bad price
"When i got this i was excited about playing all my discs in one machine. I justified the price by saying you get what you pay for. In this case though it wasn't true. Getting it to run the 1080p took to much work when i was running only hdmi. When playing DVDs there was a green line about 1/4 in thick and 5-6 in across the top right of the screen. Also ran into the same problem with the movie sunshine, commentary cutting in and out randomly and at will. took it back and got the samsung duo, works great and is easy to use. Also the extra cash back in my pocket feel better. Bottom line, get the duo."

What's great about it: Plays everything. What's not so great: No analog 5.1 audio
"This is one of the best players I ever purchased. Plays Blu Ray, HD DVD and has a good quality upconversion for regular DVD. After LG released a new firmware update in April 2008 it can bitstream advanced audio codecs through HDMI and is BD profile 1.1 compatible. It also has all the hardware to potentially support BD profile 2.0 as well, and , in my opinion, is one of the best Blu Ray players on the market. This player can also be made to be region free for DVDs and play PAL DVDs as well. It plays every single video disc I have in my library. I am actually thinking about getting a second one."

What's great about it: plays regular dvd's and audio cd's well What's not so great: very iffy on HD and BD discs.
"I've now had the BH200 for about 6 weeks if not a bit more. The movie I purchased at about the same time as the player was a blu-ray movie called Sunshine. I've now tried three players, four copies of the movie; and, all players with and without firmware upgrades on all four copies of the movie and it STILL WON'T PLAY THAT MOVIE PROPERLY ! Except for the movie Chuck and Larry, every HD or BD disc I've played to date, either skips or freezes on any given movie sometimes or sometimes not. After the HD, BD player war ended, I purchased a Panasonic BD player and thus far everything I've played on it including my one remaining copy of Sunshine plays flawlessly. I wound up keeping the BH200 anyway as I hope eventually I'll get some HD discs that will play all the way through without trouble. I started buying electronic equipment back when the standard was components with tubes, and I must say that the LG BH200 is by far the worst piece of electronics I've ever owned. Frankly, I don't think it's capable of handling all the things it's supposed to do; and, for what I paid for it, I expect it to work correctly."

Keep Your HD-DVDs Alive
03/15/2008
By jayszfrom Nor Cal
What's great about it: Great picture quality, simple to use and connect, plays everything (so far) What's not so great: Limited audio connectivity, price
"I've had this player for 4 months and I like the fact that I don't have to think about the player compatibility. I have many different format DVDs and can't keep track what player is compatible. BD, HD-DVD, DVD purchased and made - This unit plays everything I've thrown in it so far. The picture from this player is great (HDMI). The old DVDs look sharper. A big step up from the 480p players. CD playing is average but I have a real CD player for that. The down side is that there are just stereo and digital audio outputs. Many quality movies have an uncompressed audio output that are best heard through direct audio output (5.1 or 7.1). For the price you are paying you would expect this unit to have this. There is only stereo (2 channel) or Optical Digital. Most users will be happy enough with these. As of today this is a pricey DVD player but it does play everything, even the old HD-DVDs. But if you are just getting into the HD craze there are BD players that will play the other DVD formats. You just don't have to worry about HD-DVD anymore. If you need to keep your HD-DVD collection alive, GET THIS PLAYER. This player is going to the everyday system in the family room since it is simple and that HD system needs a better DVD player. I'll have to find another BD player for the home theater."

What's great about it: Quick loading, No format war What's not so great: No Coax audio out
"Great product. Loads very quickly for HD-DVDs, something my true Toshiba HD-XA1 couldnt do to save its life. Plays HD-DVDs that other HD players wouldnt. Only played a few Blu-Ray's in it so far, but no complaints. The best thing is you can play either format. I jumped on HD-DVD very early on and didn't want to scrap all my movies now that Blu-Ray seems to be winning. The only minor complaint I have is that it has no Coax digital audio out. That spec seems to be better for DVDs, but the sound is still great."

What's great about it: Plays everything I have put into it. What's not so great: little slower than my hd-xa2
"I purchased this player a few days ago. I decided to purchase this player instead of the Samsung combo player. Both players have issues but the Samsung appeared to have the bulk of them. I tried the Ratatoiulle BD and it worked great. I didn't have the annoying camera icon everyone was talking about. There have been no audio or video drop outs, at least that have been noticeable. Hd-dvd menus are a bit sluggish, about the same speed as my hd-a2, but slower than my hd-xa2 (which I returned after the WB announcement). I have the first Pirates movie on BD and it looks AMAZING on this player, much better than on my PS3. While it still looked good, the PS3 bd image was always a little grainy (though not as noticeable to my wife!. Hd-dvd's such as Bourne Ultimatum look incredible. As far as upconversion, this player is just as good, if not better than my old hd-xa2. It uses QDEO processing, which is very similar to HQV processing. You have all the same settings plus a little more! I tried various dvds, everything from Frasier to Finding Nemo. This player is great at upconverting. If you have at least $225 worth of hd-dvd's or just want the best of both worlds, this player is for you. So far it plays all my discs without hesitation."

By SCORPHUNTERfrom San Diego, CA
What's great about it: Plays both formats What's not so great: Doesn't play some dvd's in both formats
"I bought this unit a week ago to play both formats since I already have HD DVD's from owning a Toshiba HD-A3. It couldn't play the BD movie Sunshine, it would jump scenes, break up, freeze, and you can hear the Director's commentary dubbed over the dialog from the actors at the same time without me selecting it. I took the DVD back and got another one, and it was the same. It also couldn't play Superman Returns in HD-DVD, the first DVD froze twice, and then after taking that one back the new one wouldn't play at all...froze right on the Warner Bros. logo. It did play Stealth and Apocalypto though in BD with no problems. I then called LG and told them of the problems, and they were the ones that suggested I return the DVD's first and try again. I asked them if I needed a firmware update, and after giving them the unit's serial # and being put on hold I
