What's great about it: Very Easy Installation and sound
What's not so great: The bass can be a little weak

"I purchased this unit and it's mounting bracket and had it setup and running within an hour. The sound is crisp and clean. The sound setup is easy and flexible. The multiple sound settings are great. The base is a little weak but overall I am very happy with it's performance."

I am a believer.   02/26/2008

What's great about it: Real surround-sound experience.
What's not so great: I had to put in a subwoofer for a complete sound experience.

"Ever since Yamaha's debut with the first model YSP-1, I became fascinated with single-speaker virtual surround system. Glancing over the Bose 3-2-1 system, I took a chance with this speaker. Although I was skeptic of its technology, I was really impressed by the true surround sound. But mind you that I had to rearrange a few furnitures to get the optimal sound (because the technology works by reflecting sound off of side and rear walls so it works better on bare walls rather than bookshelves).

You really can't expect 5.1 or 7.1 quality experience, but for what it is, you'll be impressed with its technology. You may also want to invest in a decent subwoofer, just like I did. Overall, my movie experience has improved without the hassle of all the wires.

Best single point surround ever!   02/19/2008

What's great about it: compact, great sound and features
What's not so great: if they can make it for less would be great! but worth every penny

"I needed a clean surround system that would require no wiring to the rear of my room, cover atleast 5.1 ch and no need for a separate amp and dont forget the Ipod dock!. Yamaha delivered this unit does it all! hdmi, dig coax,optical,decoding,fm/am radio and even "my beam" a feature that directs sound only to you!. Buy it if you need an all in one that sounds great without all the extra hassle of an amp, running wires etc...or the upper models!"

Great for med and small rooms   02/16/2008
By Zero2700 from Yonkers, NY

What's great about it: Compact sleek design, customizable input lables, customizable sound settings, subwoofer output
What's not so great: Not meant for oddly shape larger size rooms

"I have been in the market for a compact virtual surround sound unit for a couple of months now and I finally narrowed it down to the Bose Cinemate and the Yamaha YSP-900. After careful researching and sound comparisons, the YSP triumphed.

One feature that was really a nice touch is the customizable label inputs on the YSP screen. You can literally change each audio input to whatever you like (up to 10 characters) with things such as numbers, upper and lowercase letters, symbols and spaces, and once you have done so, you will see the new label on the screen of the YSP. Mine currently says "APPLE TV", "HD DVD", "MP3/AUX" and "HDTV CABLE". The only draw back is that the remote control already has preset abbreviations on the buttons for each input, I worked around this by using my label maker and just pasting my new inputs in the space right above the buttons, and it turned out to be pretty cool looking.

Another nice feature is the Auto or Manual calibration of the "Virtual Surround Sound". You can use the Setup Mic that comes with the unit and it can perform an "Auto Sound Calibration" (different pitches of sound shoot out into the room and the Mic calculates the distance and volume and adjusts it to the proper settings). I first used this feature when I took it out of the box and it worked pretty well, but once I got familiar with the "Manual Setup", I quickly learned that you can get a much more accurate sound out o the YSP. You can customize the YSP sound in so many different ways. You can control the angle at which the sound bounces off your walls and the total distance the sound will travel. You also have individual volume for each channel (Left, Right, Center, Rear Left, Rear Right, Subwoofer) and also can change the treble and bass for each channel. You can also add any subwoofer that you want which is a pretty nice feature (especially if you already own one or if you just want to keep it simple and purchase a inexpensive one, most systems come with a subwoofer already but most of the time they are cheap and don't sound well).

If there was a downside to this unit it will be that this unit will probably not sound good in a oddly shape room and you really don't get the same accurate sound as a 5.1 surround sound setup, but given the fact that a typical 5.1 setup consist of many components (Receiver, Five Speakers, Subwoofer) and can cost $1000 and higher and will consist of strenuous wiring and sound adjustments, you will probably overlook this downside. I believe that the Yamaha YSP-900 is a simple and stress free solution to someone who wants good quality sound, sleek flat-screen friendly design and can due without the clutter and complications of your typical surround sound setup.

best system to buy   12/20/2007

What's great about it: A LITTLE SHORT FOR THE TV
What's not so great: LOOKS GREAT ON THE WALL

"I purchase this system for the master bed which had a LCD
hanging on the wall. Not only did this system sound fantastic but it looks good too. The surround sound is as good as those with five or six speakers with sub. All you need is this for your bed room.

5.1 system was better but...   09/22/2007
By smiley62 from sw mich

"this unit does alright, but I had a 5.1 set up and the sound is around you whereas this unit you do not get the sound directly behind you. Reason for this unit no wires and speakers throughout the room but I am going back to a 5.1. If you have a small room and do not want wires this is a good system."

Technological Triumph   09/18/2007
By ekarjala from New Hampshire

"Great things do come in small packages. The sleek stying of the YSP-900 shows that form and function do follow in the best of products. From the ease of component integration (just plug in your audio source and a sub-woofer), to the fantastically effective auto-tuning procedure it is clear that no engineering corners were cut. A wide choice of DSP listening modes ensure that you will have an optimal listening experience with any material. I enjoy everything from MP3, CD-A, DVD, and even vinyl through this device. The surround sound is amazingly effective, considering that there are not discrete speakers for all the surround channels. I have found that placing the unit just above the TV enhances the presence of the side and rear channel presence. The fact that there are no wires to run and no speakers to hang make this a fantastic solution for the discriminating audio fanatic looking for a minimal installation."
