What's great about it: Easy set up, compatible to Vista, prints pages quickly, doesn't take up much space, and it's quiet.
What's not so great: It's not a colored printer.

"I recently replaced my old laptop with a new one. However, my new laptop came with Windows Vista and my Epson laptop was not compatible. Between work, school and personal projects, it became frustrating that I could not print using my new laptop. My boss ended up getting this printer from Best Buy for me as a birthday present, knowing fully well that it would benefit me for work and school purposes. I can't begin to express how happy I am to have this printer and many thanks to my Boss for getting it for me.

This printer is a small dainty thing and it doesn't take up much room like my old Epson printer. This is a major plus, because I live in a tiny apartment. Setting it up was a breeze. The installation CD was user friendly, so anyone who's not tech savvy could set this printer up with ease. The printer is quiet, which is great when you're printing late at night. When you're living in an apartment, your neighbors can hear everything. This printer prints pages fast like lightning. This is helpful for me when it comes to school, because I'm always doing essays and large scaled projects. Not to mention, I was able to network my printer for when I work remotely from home.

However, this printer does not print colored pages. Which is totally fine with me.

If you're an on-the-go kind of person, you need your prints quick, and you don't require any fancy smancy stuff... then this is the printer to get!"

"This is a great printer. Cheap paper curls with the heat but if you use HP paper it does not curl. Very fast and quiet. Compact. Great Printer!"

HP printers have gone down. 11/21/2008

What's great about it: It is easy to set up.
What's not so great: Continues to jam repeatedly though there is nothing wrong, now will not even turn on.

"It worked great until it got its first paper jam, then afterward, it continued to jam though there was nothing wrong. Now it will not even turn on and I have only owned the printer for a few months. Even before it stopped working, It would take up to five to ten minutes to even print."

"I bought this printer 3 days ago and couldn't be happier. I had a much bulkier laser printer that I loved but was not compatable with Windows Vista. I was not happy about having to give it up, but after using my new hp laserjet P1006 I am thrilled.
I'm a student and find myself printing alot of information for my online classes. This printer is so much better than my old printer!
It was easy to set up (no manual required), even for a person so technologically inclined such as myself. And it's so quiet you won't even know its on, unlike my old printer, and the print quality is great.
I highly recommend!!!"

"I am a fulltime student and i have to print up on a regular bases tons of reserach articles for school , and when i was printing on my inkjet - it seemed that i was buying ink on a monthly basis for my printer . When i got the laser printer I use to print up my school articles - i get a more crisper print quality and the toner lasts a lot longer . I bought my printer along with toner and June and still the print quality is premium and i can't even begin to tell you how many forms , articles , and other stuff i have printed . I wish i got this sooner. I;m only using my ink jet printer for printing out pictures . !!!"

Rough start, great finish 08/06/2008

What's great about it: small size, low price, speed of printing, great print quality.
What's not so great: Broke after two days.

"The included Cd had a great tutorial and made the instillation of the driver a snap. The printer worked great for two days of light home use, before simply ceasing to advance paper into the print area. Best Buy came to the rescue by swapping it for a new one. I was tempted to buy another brand or model, but the small size and low price was so attractive, I took another model 1006. Even a new printer can have a flaw, but I like HP and I love Best Buy standing behind it.
It works great, its fast, pretty quiet, speedy, and the print quality superb."

Not Happy With This Purchase 05/10/2008

What's great about it: Small, Simple, Low Cost
What's not so great: Software Issues

"I am CONSTANTLY having to stop and restart the print spooler on this printer. After only 2 months I have found myself trouble shooting with HP 4x's. I don't have this problem using same laptop with other HP printers I have in different offices. (HP laptop running Vista Pro)
Something is wrong here. Don't know what. I do not recommend."

"we got this to replace an older inkjet, hoping it would be both economical and faster. for our application, printing invoices and statements in a mobile environment, the heat of the laser printer curls the paper and slows down productivity. will go back to an inkjet type printer."

Printer is OK. Driver software poor. 04/28/2008

What's great about it: Decent print quality. Inexpensive. Fast.
What's not so great: Untested, poorly designed driver software.

"This is a GREAT little printer, at a decent price, if ALL you want to do is straight, 1-up, 'nothing fancy' printing.
If you want to do double sided printing, with say some 'tiling' to center the output etc. -- be prepared to get very frustrated and waste paper/toner trying to get it right. Just ask it to do 2 copies of a double-sided document and it will go for a loop.
There are NO printed installation instructions. You can't just slide in the HP CD-ROM and then use Windows ADD A NEW Printer. Got to use HP's printer installation process -- which is counter intuitive.
As an HP shareholder I applaud the trouble HP has gone to cut costs. But they have gone too far. Add $20 to the price and TEST the driver software. Include at least a ONE SHEET quick install guide in 3 languages.
I will not be buying another HP printer any time soon. I got this for a specific project. As soon as that is done I will throw it away. I couldn't give it to even a charity knowing that the driver software is way below par."

What's great about it: Compact, economical, good print quality.
What's not so great: No instructions, only generic CD for several models

"Upon opening the box, there were no instructions that indicated what needed to be done prior to installing the installation CD. Afrer installing the CD, the pictures did not exactally match the printer I bought, which led to some confusion regarding the paper feed assembly."

What's great about it: Excellent Printing

"I bought this printer 2 weeks a go and found this very helpful in quick document printing. Its fast and produce an excellent results. The only thing I dont like about it that the CD manual for installation is not in detail and which sometimes frustrated if the problem exists. But overall, best value for the best price."

Same HP Quality I've always known. 02/10/2008

What's great about it: Good black print quality.
What's not so great: Only 8MB RAM

"I had a compettitor's laser printer (hecho en Mexico) for about 2 years then it went to pieces. Limped along for another 2 years with an ink printer. Now, I have school age kids and there are more occasions to make printouts. Enter my new HP 1006 laser printer. So far ( about 2 weeks) it's terrific. Printed my Turbotax report and a few other doc's great. The 8mb ram really does not limit output of word doc's, acrobat files, etc. It has solid, quality black print for text and graphics that I have halway's experienced from HP printers where I work. I expect my HP 1006 printer to put out a lot more impressions then the last crummy "budget" model I had."

What's great about it: Relatively fast and great quality

"I recently added a home office and went in search of a good printer. I decided against a color printer because how often do you really “need” to use color when it comes to work? I found this printer which was on sale, I know HP is a great brand, this particular printer had good reviews so I decided to purchase it. I have only had the printer a couple of weeks so far … it works great. It prints fast and the quality is excellent. The only downside of the printer is that the replacement print cartridge is almost as expensive as the actual printer price."

What's great about it: compact (for a laser printer), simple controls, quick start-up time, clear printing
What's not so great: no USB printer cable

"For a student who needs to print several pages of articles and papers, this B&W printer makes sense as an investment for economical (at sale price) and convenient printing. It's small enough to now take up too much place and can handle large quantities fairly efficiently. Though duplex printing is not inbuilt, one can do so manually, without any hassle, and in fact gives one more flexibility and control - the front open paper feed tray (seen in most inkjets) is also convenient for placing paper.
The initial operating instructions are straightforward, and fortunately one is not confused by too many buttons or controls. However the orange new-toner tag, which needs to be removed before operating the printer for the first time was not clearly marked, which was initially confusing. Moreover the printer package does not include the USB printer cable and the choices available at the Best Buy store tend to be on the pricier side, while cheaper options are available, including the HP printer cable itself.
I also use a Mac, and though I have had no problems printing PDFs and from websites, so far I have faced problems printing Word documents (I've been converting them to PDFs and printing) which appears to be a driver-program compatibility issue.
All told, the HP P1006 has been a worthwhile purchase and has freed me from printing hassles and anxiety about printing a large number of pages. I would recommend this product for personal use."

What's great about it: Small footprint, great print quality for price

"I bought two of these printers on sale for $99 each for our small law office and I've been so pleased with them I'm buying a third tonight. They aren't replacing our larger printer which handles the legal sized paper and the bulk of our printing, but for individual offices, they are perfect. I had an old HP inkjet from college that only died this past month (after 10 years of use!), and had good print quality up unti the end!"
