What's great about it: Plays all three formats, and cheaper
What's not so great: slower load time
I had the LG superblu, and it was garbage. haven't had any problems with this yet, have yet to update firmware but as with everything that constantly evolves its a must. better price than the lg, even if it is slower at loading even dvds. the savings though are worth the extra 5-10 seconds at most. plus it works well with everything i played so far, and i keep a steady flow of movies going through it.

What's great about it: One player for three formats
What's not so great: Still has some bugs
Bought this a few weeks ago and I love it. Plays all of my movies so I don't have to have two players taking up space. Firmware update is a must and it has played everything I have thrown at it since. Great machine.

What's great about it: Having both HD and BluRay formats in one player.
What's not so great: Had a few problems
When I first bought the player, the first movie I played did not work properly and got stuck in machine. Got BestBuy to exchange the player and was issued a new movie. After that, had a couple of little problems. First, the audio from one movie, the new Jessie James, audio dragged 15 seconds behind the video (occured during the last hour of movie). Second, the video from another movie, No Country For Old Men, only showed the coming attractions. I exchanged the BluRay movie, but had the same results, ended up with the standard def. version (very disappointed). Loading time for each movie takes a while. However, I have not did the updates for the player. It is possible that these issues could have been or soon will be resolved.
The plus side of it, picture and sound quality is very good, if using the HDMI connection. Do consider spending the extra money on buying the higher end cable. With the war between both formats, which finally ended a earlier this year, you did not have to worry about who will win, because you had both in one machine. I recommend this player only if you want to purchase HD movies, good luck finding them, or want some minor problems.

What's great about it: Plays Blu-ray and HD-DVD
What's not so great: None so far
No issues with this player so far. I like that it can be connected to the web via an ethernet cable. It makes it nice for the firmware updates and HD-DVD updates. Hook up was simple and the instructions are very clear. The remote lacks the ability to control the volume of my sound system. Blu-ray and HD-DVD both look fantastic. If you invested in HD-DVDs, this combo player is the way to go. Unlike some reviews I have read, the loads times are not unreasonable.

What's great about it: Good Picture
What's not so great: Lock-ups and lack of HD Audio support
This player locks up within 30 minutes every time I try to watch a movie. Only happens if the unit has been off for a while. Contacted Samsung and sent it in for repair over 3 weeks ago. Still waiting for Its' return.
The player would also have problems playing many discs that play successfully on my panasonic BD30.
Finally, the UP5000 does not support TrueHD or DTS MA outputs (either Analog or digital). Although the advertising implies that it should.
The latest firmware "update" actually removed network capability (bug that will have to be fixed in the next firmware).

What's great about it: No more switching around
What's not so great: Just wish it had upconversion capability
I wanted a DUO model so that I could buy whatever format my favorite movies would be released on. And now that HD is going away, I will be able to scoop up HD movies for CHEAP too!!! Waited for this 2nd generation model by Samsung so they could work out the bugs from their first DUO player model... seems that they have since Ive had no problems yet! I love it-- Got the very first model that arrived before Christmas... store mgr even saved it for me to buy and he bought the next one! And again, Ive had no problems!

What's great about it: audio and video
What's not so great: expensive early adoption
Bought the unit and it is great. I am running audio via analog because I did not want to/need to upgrade my pre-amp processor. The fact that this unit will decode both HD audio formats is perfect for those of us that want to take advantage of the onboard decoding and backward compatability with existing audiophile equipment of both HD audio formats.
I am not running 1080p as yet, but the 1080i projector I am using shows the Samsung as quite competent.
My suggestion is that if you are looking for backward compatability for the 'expensive' gear you already own, this machine is the ticket. If you are one of the blind sheep that absolutely MUST HAVE an HDMI connection [or frankly your equipment is newer than mine!] then I cannot comment.

What's great about it: 1 item replaces 3
What's not so great: HDMI cable not included
I've been using it for the past few days, easy hook up, I have all Samsung products (40 inch LCD, and Samsung surround sound), now the package is complete. I purchased 4 blu ray movies, the picture is remarkable, and the upconvert feature on my normal dvds looks great. I called the 2 closests stores to me to see if they had it in stock, at they time they did not so "Matt" from the Concord NH store took my number and called me back within 2 minutes to tell me they had one left in Manchester and he had them hold it for me. Within 2 hours I was on my way back home to hook it up. Product was great, the service from Best Buy even better.

What's great about it: This Unit Is A Step In The Right Direction
What's not so great: There Definitely Are Some
Let's not get too carried away here hombres. This unit is not quite the perfect solution.First of all,the company did not post the current firmware update for no reason. There are playback issues regardless if one has personally encountered them yet or not.
Secondly,we can only hope that the second firmware update actually will become available. As it stands right now,the Dolby True HD is only available in two channels and there is no DTS-HD nor DTS-HD Master audio. For those of us who are unaware, these are surround sound formats of uncompressed audio. They are not the same as other inferior types of Dolby or DTS.Since you can't access these (as it now stands) with this device,an optical digital audio cable is as good an option as any however,if they ever fix the HD surround sound, you definitely would need to use an HDMI cable for the audio as well as the video. You could by any optical digital audio (TOSLINK,SPDIF) cable you want and pay 800 dollars for it but,an HDMI cable that supports HDMI version 1.3 is the only cable that can possibly carry the HD audio because of the bandwidth restrictions of all other current audio cables.
The chip in this player made by Broadcom is rumored to be defective beyond firmware update repair so,honestly,I would wait to see if an update comes out which fixes this problem. It may,it may not.We might have to wait until the Holidays '08 (if ever) for an up to par dual format player.
By the way, here is a hint when deciding which HDMI cable to buy : Accell - B077C-007B - 2m UltraAV Pro HDMI-A/HDMI-A . This cable has the same exact specifications as Monster's best cable. This HDMI 1.3 cable supports all HD formats including 1080p and 1440p (not yet available) and transmits an all-digital signal providing the highest quality audio and video. Delivering both uncompressed high-definition video and uncompressed multi-channel audio, the UltraAV Pro series HDMI cable supports an overall bandwidth of up to 10.2 Gbps (340 MHz) for a blazing fast audio/video connection. No other HDMI cable provides better performance. There is no difference between this an Monster's 1000 series unless you fall for marketing ploys. These are the same exact cables and one is 100 dollars more than the other."A fool and his money......"The key here is the 10.2 Gbps 340 MHz bandwidth. There are HDMI cables worse than these two but, there are none better and they are exactly equal down to every last detail.
I'm looking foward hoping a quality company like Yamaha or Integra or Harman Kardon delivers a dual format HD player that gets it right sometime this year.Otherwise, separate units are the way to go.

What's great about it: Too many to list
What's not so great: NONE
I recently purchased the BD-UP5000 and I am completely satisfied and by the least simply amazed with its features, quality, and results.
I read all the reviews from this site and more sites before purchasing this unit and there are some things that I found to be helpful that I must share so that you too will smile with the WOW in which I did.
First off, last year I purchased the Samsung 40 inch LCD 1080p TV. I absolutely love it! I also purchased a Onkyo HT-S680 6.1 home theater system. I am thinking of upgrading to the samsung theater to match the system up.
I have now added the UP5000 to this set up and this is how I did it with NO problems, NO downloads, NO upgrades. I have watched burned dvd-R, DVD, HD-DVD, and BlueRay on this machine and have found no problems at all. The sound...... WOW! The picture WOOOWWW!! Even the regular DVDs were improved.
Important info:
PICTURE
You will need to invest in the best HDMI cable available. This will solve alot of problems some people have with picture quality. The HD & blueray send massive amounts of video to your TV and the cable has to be able to handle this. A regular DVD sends around 347 thousand pixels per frame. The new formats send a whopping 2.08 million pixels. If your cable is cheap, you wont get the picture. I recommend Monster HDMI 1000. Monster will upgrade it free if future equipment surpasses its performance capacity. Worth the extra $$ to me! It is important to send your picture straight from the DVDplayer to the TV. There is no need to send the video info to or through your sound system to be processed or re-routed.
Sound
Since, there is only one HDMI port I used again, the best, optical cable I could find (monster) to go from the DVD player to the digital optical input of the sound system. Since im not inputting video , the sound system only has to process and direct the sound which it did beautifully. A DVD sound stream sends 450 thousand bites per second .... the new formats send 1.5 million bites per second. The picture goes where its supposed to , and the sound gets to the speakers like its supposed to. Even if your sound system has HDMI in/out puts for video, I wouldnt use them. It is not necessary and why overload the system? This set up may/should work with other systems as well.
Using the HDMI and Optical cables worked great. To watch any dvd I only have to push the TV input button once to get to (HDMI input). I put my ONKYO on DVD and set its input to (digital Optical input). BINGO, there it is!
When I want to watch TV... set the TV input back to (Svideo 1 )and the sound system to tuner. I use sattelite and its routed through the sattelite receiver to the sound system (video 1 in ) via S-cable then Video out to the TVs (video 1 input) via S-cable.
This is a very fine product that plays multiple formats of DVDs and is upgradeable through firmware if and when problems do occur. What more could you ask for? I highly recommend this unit. It is worth every cent including the two cables (230.00) and I will recommend this to my friends.
Hang on to your hats...and enjoy the WILD EXPERIENCE!!!
........................and thats my 2 cents.

What's great about it: Plays both formats and great upconverter.
What's not so great: None
Top of the line player. Have tried both formats and it played all movies with no problems. Firmware was easy to update. I had a Toshiba HD-A30 which I liked but had problems with all movies that the picture and sound would cut out two or three seconds three or four times during the movie so I took it back got another one and it did the same and I had the current firmware for it. Might be a HDMI problem with my LCD TV. I have a Samsung LCD TV so I went with the Samsung combo player and the problem was gone. This is just one great player with all the options you need.

Second Firmware Update In May

What's great about it: DVD Upscaling / Blu Ray HD DVD Image Quality
What's not so great: Second Firmware Update Needs To Be Done (May)
The firmware update that came out last week fixes the playback issues but, there is a second firmware update that should be done which is due by the end of May that will increase the Dolby True HD from stereo to multichannel, fix some BD-J and BD+ issues, and enable the DTS HD.After the second firmware update, all should be well. The first one is crucial and probably should have been done before it was released.
As far as the BluRay profile 2.0 discs go,the movies will play on a profile 1.1 player.Profile 2.0 (aka BD-Live) discs just offer live interactive web features that not everyone cares about. You would need a profile 2.0 player to access the interactive features, though.Panasonic has one due out later this year, the DMP-BD50K, but it is not a big deal to me as I don't care alot about interactive web features. It is far more important to me to be able to watch movies in HD from Universal Studios and Paramount who are HD DVD only.
Once the second firmware update is done, you should not have any problem hooking this up to a capable A/V receiver.I seriously doubt that you need to hook it up directly to a TV as it either outputs video over HDMI or it doesn't.The player has no way of knowing if the video is being output directly to a TV or to a receiver. It sounds more like the receiver's problem.Try the Denon AVR-4308CI for an a/v receiver.

What's great about it: plays most BD and HD-DVD discs
What's not so great: isn't upgradable to the newest BD format
This player doesn't mention anywhere that it has a network connection, which is the bulk of what's included in the newest version of Blue-Ray, 2.0. The older players (like this one) can't play discs made for the newest version, so this player is basically already outdated. If you want a Blue-Ray player that's up-to-date, the only one I know of on the market right now that's 2.0 is the PS3. HD-DVD is a dying format, so don't bother unless you're already seriously invested in the format.

What's great about it: Plays HD DVD's and BluRay Discs
What's not so great: You Need To Install a Firmware Update / No SA-CD
This is a great player that does what it is supposed to do after installing an easy firmware update.
Step one : Download onto your computer (from a safe place) a free software program called 7 Zip.
Step two : Download the firmware update from Samsung's web site.It comes in a zipped folder.
Step three : Download & print the instructions from the link directly below where the link for the update is.
Step four : Extract the files from the zipped folder using 7 Zip and then burn them to a quality CD-R.
Step five : Follow the installation instructions.Make sure not to lose power while installing the update.
After doing this simple update, there is not much to complain about.

What's great about it: Unknown
What's not so great: Incompatible with Top Quality Sound
Major techno mistake! You can't get both true HD picture and sound. I called two separate Samsung technical support specialists, and they both told me that this model must be connected with an HDMI cable from the DVD player's port directly to the TV's port; otherwise, you get no picture. There is only one HDMI port on the DVD, so you have to use optical or composite cables to connect the DVD player to the home theater receiver, which means that you lose the best possible sound quality. Every other Blue Ray and HD format DVD player allows you to connect them with an HDMI cable to the home thater receiver so that you get optimum HD picture and sound. The Samsung needs either better circuitry or a second HDMI port. Also, the remote is cheesy and not user friendly.

What's great about it: One Machine Will Rule Them All
What's not so great: Not a single one......
I have had this unit for about 2 weeks now, after becoming a very lucky person who happened to walk into store and see the lone box shining like a star from above. I have played Blu Ray, HD DVD, and standard DVD's- all of which have worked flawlessly in this unit. It does a better job of Upconverting standard DVD's than my old DVD Upconverting player. And the picture from Blu Ray and HD DVD is outstanding.
I know some reviews have had comments about the audio, but I have it hooked up to a 5.1 surround sound system, and have no complaints about it.
If you have the luck to come across one of these, I would highly recommend buying it.

What's great about it: Two formats in one player
What's not so great: need firmware update for HD sound
I knew this was being released in the stores on 25 Dec., the only issue was they were all closed for x-mas. I went to CC and they were all out, even online all over Texas. I decided to travel to Best Buy to give it a shot, there was one in the very back of the shelf, took it and ran. Brought it to the house and hooked it up to my system, easy install via HDMI, one cable, multiple uses.(to get the best audio/video possible you need to buy the Monster 1000 HDMI cable. It can handle 10.2 Gbps of information and can pass 120 Hz frame rate. Which means uncompressed HD sound and video, and 3D HD for the future. Dont listen to the people who say any HDMI cable will do, you are just robbing yourself of everything HD can do.) Picture is amazing! Sound is amazing! I have it hooked to an Onkyo TX-NR 905 then to a Sony 60A3000 rp. Everything looks good and plays both formats with ease, it even made my sons Elmo movie look good. I called samsung re: DTS Master audio and Dolby True HD and they said the firmware update will be available in January. This is the end of the format war, samsung has the perfect choice.
Also, when I go to the video store and rent HD-DVD and Blu-ray movies at the same, time the clerk tries to explain to me they are different formats and I need to have the right player for each, I just smile and say, "my player can handle both formats with ease." Now there are no limitations. If you can find one, buy it. You will not be sorry.
