What's great about it: Amazing Picture Quality for both DVD and Blu-Ray
What's not so great: Slightly slow load times

"This is an amazing Blu-Ray player. The only thing i didn't really like was the fact that it took some time to load discs, but you will get that with any blu-ray player on the market."

What's great about it: Easy, Fast, Affordable, Convenient....
What's not so great: That it takes 1 whole day to arrive! (They are fast)

"This is amazing! Check it out and you will know what I mean. I went from a 7 yr old player to this and the difference is enormous! I looked at a few other places to compare pricing and they had nothing. Either sold out, discontinued, or outrageously expensive. I will always come to Best Buy first."

As advertised   06/21/2008
By HDfanatic13 from Edison, NJ

What's great about it: great HD picture, bitstream audio
What's not so great: load time

"There are a ton of customer reviews on this product. All of them are on point. The picture quality on all formats is excellent. The option to put out bitstream audio on blu-ray discs is great. In fact I have been more impressed with the audio performance than the video. I have the player hooked up to a Yamaha rx-v463 receiver and the digital audio signal never sounded this good from my old upconvert DVD player. Load time is an issue, but that is an issue with most blu-ray players. You can pay more for some higher end players, but you will not find a better blu-ray player under $500."

Flawless performance   06/09/2008
By DVDWilly from Haymarket, VA

What's great about it: Best picture out there; sound has to be experienced
What's not so great: Slow compared to standard DVD, but who cares...

"I had resisted buying this Blu-Ray player because my receiver at the time, an Onkyo TX-SR703, did not have the audio CODECs for the new lossless audio formats. I was waiting for the DMP-BD50 because it had onboard processing of those CODECs.
After reading opinions that the audio decoding should take place on the receiver plus the fact that I needed more HDMI inputs than I currently had, I jumped off for the TX-SR705. The 705 has 3 HDMI inputs and switches flawlessly among them. The decoding I will get to. I am running the Blu-Ray through the Onkyo to a Sony VPL-VW50 on a 92” Stewart Firehawk screen. The speaker system is Klipsch, RB-61s for the fronts, RC-62 for the center, RS-52s for the surrounds, with a SVS PB-12 subwoofer. I also have a Toshiba X-A2 HD DVD player in the system.
I have Blade Runner in both HD DVD and Blu-Ray. I was originally and still am a fan of HD DVD for a number of reasons…however, the audio on the Blu-Ray version in the lossless format edges out that of the HD DVD. Picture-wise I would call it identical or at least too close for my eyes to discern. The theater is roughly 15’ by 20’ with seating positions at 11’ for the front row and 13.5’ for the back row.
Get “Sunshine” on Blu-Ray. I have never seen a better picture on any screen anywhere—direct view TVs, commercial theaters, plasma—nowhere. With the lossless sound track selected the sound field in this movie is simply amazing. The presence of the sun’s surface is felt as much as heard. If something moves on screen from explosions, vessel disconnects, the movement is felt as it would be if you were actually there. For me, this is the ultimate demo disk. Try it, you’ll like it.

Outstanding   06/08/2008
By Beargizmo from New Hampshire

What's great about it: ease of set up, quality of sound and picture
What's not so great: Huh?

"I've been waiting quite a while to find one of these available somewhere, ever since 3 different sales people at 3 different places rated it the best. Finally found one this weekend, set it up yesterday and put in my first blu ray purchase "Twister" (no comments please)..I thought it would blow the windows out..Also bought the Planet Earth Series which I can't wait to watch..
This is an outstandingn product...and I highly recommend it.
Hooked up to a 4-5 year old just above entry level Onkyo and a Panasonic 50" Plazma. Don't have HDMI on the receiver..but I'm find with coax for now, and a new receiver can wait.

Great DVD player and system   06/05/2008
By CoachRobert from Atlanta

What's great about it: Great video and audio
What's not so great: None so far

"Have this blu-ray, hooked to an Onkyo 705 receiver and a Klipsch SL speaker system with a RW-10d sub hooked to a Hitachi 50" LCD HDTV. Entire system simple to set up and modify. It really rocks both with blu-ray movies and videos, standard DVD's and music CD's. The ability to bitstream the latest audio technology is impressive and combined with the rest of the system, really provides superb entertainment. PCM uncompressed is absolutely awesome. Best Buy was helpful in assisting me to decide how to construct my system. Best investment I could have made for the performance I get. Bring on some more Blu-ray movies!"

Awesome!   05/25/2008
By dragyn from Phoenix, AZ

What's great about it: Pic quality and especially the Sound
What's not so great: audio tweakage needed for T2

"Ok, I did my research before buying a Blu-Ray.. and went with this one and I am very pleased. Yes, it takes a little time to Read the discs but I notice thats how they all are. I noticed its different for different movies, some loaded in 30 seconds but so far only Terminator 2 took 1 minute and I also had to tweak the audio settings for it. It was only playing background noise and music but no dialogue.
I figured I would have to do the firmware update but still haven't had to yet. Oh, I went ahead and d/l the update, was kinda surprised u can only use CD-R... not CD-RW(no re-writable discs). I didnt even think they sold CD-R's any more but I found a 5-pack for sale.

Oh and I knew picture quality is what we're looking for here but the Sound is what I really noticed. So clear and crisp. I dont even have surround sound, I just have 2 sony speakers.

Overall, great product and worth the extra money, which is really only $100 more than the cheap Sony that you were gonna buy.

Panasonic DMP-BD30K and Samsung LCD Looks Great   05/17/2008
By DavidATX from Texas

What's great about it: Great Picture, Quick Loading
What's not so great: Sound Quality on standard DVDs - just average

"Read the reviews stating that this Blu-Ray player and Samsung LCD TVs don't play well together. Contacted Panasonic support prior to purchasing this product to ask about this issue.
Panasonic provided me a link to Firmware 1.8 (release May 1, 2008).
Purchased the Panasonic Blu-Ray player, installed the firmware provided, and all is well at this point.
Will write a more detailed review after I have had a chance to test this product more, but if you have a Samsung LCD TV use the latest Firmware for the Panasonic DMP-BD30K and this will work.

Its finally here   05/17/2008
By Abrats from Honolulu, HI

What's great about it: Every detail was promised
What's not so great: Dont loose your remote

"This player shook hands with my 47 inch Vizio 1080p display and it wont let go of each other any time soon. My DVD collection looks impressive, outstanding, clear and sharp when viewing it with this player, its almost near HD quality. The blu ray movies puts you in a place of realization and in the center of the action. The load time is worth the wait and it doesn’t bother me. I purchased a certified 1.3 HDMI cable to handle the signals required for optimal performance for video and audio. This is connected to my 1000 watt Sony Digital Audio Control Center as the last piece of the puzzle. Let me tell you, when you are watching Top Gun, it fells like you’re on the runway with those fighter jets. Regarding the settings, be sure to read the operating manual carefully so that you can get the most of what this player has to offer. The price is very reasonable and I expected to pay the amount that was suggested. I really enjoy this player and I would recommend it to my friends and family."

Outstanding Player   05/12/2008
By Dukke

What's great about it: Great machine. Does everything expected and more
What's not so great: Price

"Before purchasing this player, I did lots or research. Looked at many models and compared specs. This player had the most compatibility. I have it connected to my 50" Panasonic Plasma 720p via HDMI and it looks great. It up-converts my regular dvd's with no problem and they look great. I have it connected to my Yamaha sound system via optical cable and the sound is great (it just scares my cats). I'm looking for a good price for another one of this model so that I can put in in my bedroom"

Better than HD players   05/03/2008
By TheHero

What's great about it: Picture is beautiful, sound is amazing
What's not so great: None

"I purchased an HD DVD player (toshiba HD-A20) when they first came out, and started reading tons of reviews for Blu Ray players after I heard they were going to stop making HD movies. After hooking up the Panasonic to my 42" Toshiba HD TV and putting in a movie I was thoroughly impressed. The load time is ten times better than my HD player which is one thing I was looking for when I set out to buy one. The picture itself is on par with any other HD movies I've watched...stunning in 1080p. At first I had a little bit of trouble getting the optical audio output setup right...I wasn't sure of the difference between PCM and bitsteam entirely, but after reading over the directions really quick it was fixed. The audio to me sounds better than it does when I watch HD movies (which I own about ten of). Personally I thought the remote looked kind of goofy, but I use a logitech harmony remote for my entire setup, so it's not an issue.
I can't really compare this to any other Blu Ray player, but it is amazing, and does a superb job of unconverting normal DVDs as well. It's also nice to know that if I were to get a receiver that could decode HD audio signals...that the player itself can bitstream the signal to it.
If you're looking for a Blu Ray DVD player, I would highly recommend this one.

What's great about it: upgrade software with product fixes for new blu-rays
What's not so great: none

"This player is great. It had a slight glitch until I upgraded the firmware of the player. glitch no more. I really like that the display dims when a movie plays. The link between my panasonic plasma and this player is very nice. It is very easy to upgrade the firmware. Definately consider this player."

Best standalone available   05/01/2008
By SmokinBert

What's great about it: Reliable performance, Bitstreams audio
What's not so great: Not speedy as the PS3

"If you're in the group that refuses to own a PS3 for Blu-ray play, then this is the player for you. With it's firmware updated, it has zero problems playing Blu-ray discs. It is profile 1.1 compliant. So, if you're into Bonus View features, you're in luck. The ability to bitstream HD audio codecs was a selling point for me, which is one thing the PS3 cannot do.
With respect for startup/loading times, the PS3 wins that hands down. The BD-30 is the smartest choice for standalone BD players right now. But look out for the BD-50, coming in the near future. But that's another story...

Solid BP 1.1 Player, Plus HD Audio Bitstreaming   04/21/2008
By Anonymous from San Diego

What's great about it: Quick Power-on and Load Times, HD Audio Bitstreaming
What's not so great: None

"I've owned this player for 6 months and continue to love it. Even if you don't care about HD audio bitstreaming (now), Panasonic still offers a hard-to-beat BP 1.1 player for the money. It's quick to power up and load, and builds on Panasonic's well-deserved reputation for solid, surprisingly affordable Blu-ray players. Factor in its HD audio bitstreaming abilities (for receivers like my Onkyo TX-SR805), though, and this player is really a steal.
Oh, and if you doubt the benefits of the Panasonic's bitstreaming abilities, watch "Queen Rock Montreal + Live Aid" on DVD and Blu-ray, the latter of which supports DTS MasterSound HD: the difference is undeniable to everyone who's heard the two discs on my system - simply stunning. Many other Blu-rays (the "Transporter" and "Die Hard" movies, for example) offer HD audio too. I look for it on anything I buy or play, smile when I find it, and sigh a bit when I don't. :-) Personally, I would never want to go back....

Best Stand Alone Blu-Ray Player   04/20/2008
By pannyblurayfan

What's great about it: Amazing blu-ray audio and video and very good upconversion of dvds.
What's not so great: Working flawlessly so far.

"I bought this blu-ray player to go along with my 42" th-42px75u panasonic plasma and I am very happy with my purchases. Everything looks and sounds amazing. This player is by fay the fastest i timed mine and it takes 17 seconds to power up and open the disk tray and another 7 seconds to recognize and start playing the disk no matter what the disk is. The sony which is also fantastic was 90 seconds and 27 seconds. Everything works just as it should and for all those Samsung LCD fanatics the updated firmware for the player to version 1.6 fixed Samsung's HDMI problem, on the panasonic end, which also occured when some connected the Playstation 3 and some Philips products to certain models of Samsung LCDs. So that flickering effect is completely fixed. So buy this one you'll be impressed."

Realistic expectations   04/20/2008
By MorninStar

What's great about it: Fast loading, brilliant A/V output, ease of use, easy to setup.
What's not so great: It does not butter the popcorn. :)

"It seems it is always easy to find something lacking in any item. This unit I would recommend to anyone who enjoys home theater. We find this unit to very easy to use, the load time is really fast in comparison to the stories we have heard about other units. The online support form Panasonic for firmware updates were every easy access and the installation was a no-brainer. I am sure we could find something missing compared to other units, but we also do not have that exposure. We just love this unit, it is a pure joy and a wonderful add-on to our A/V system. It was highly recommended by several of the staff at Best Buy. Once again, the Best Buy staff pointed us in a direction that we are so pleased about. Any expectations we did have, it certainly has met them, let alone surpassed them. We just love it!"

Awesome Equipment   04/20/2008
By yag17 from Atlanta, Ga

What's great about it: Dolby Tru-HD and DTS Master Audio Sound Incredible. Picture clarity excellent. Blacks are true black
What's not so great: None so far. Had trouble accessing the extras on one disc but not with any others so it may have been that disc

"Was looking forward to this unit and it did not disappoint. I deliberately waited until a Profile 1.1 player was available. The unit is only slightly slower than my DVD player at warming up. Upon insertion of a disc for play, again only slightly slower than my regular DVD player. The picture detail is incredible and the sound with both DTS Master Lossless Audio and Dolby Tru-HD blows my upconverting DVD player away. Overall I like the DTS Master Audio the best. One strong word of advice is make sure you get HDMI 1.3 certified cables between your Blu Ray player and receiver AND also between your receiver and your projector especially if you have a 1080P projector. That way you will be able to take advantage of the Deep color enhancement that we will be seeing coming up in the near future on upcoming discs. That is suppose to add even more detail to the picture. The price point for this unit is also reasonable. Glad it is finally here. Oh, by the way it does a very good job upconverting regual DVD's as well"

Great Blu-ray player   04/20/2008

What's great about it: Loads disc very fast
What's not so great: None that I've found

"This blu-ray player is the best buy for the money. It loads discs faster than their competitors. The picture is amazing and the sound quality is great. One other plus is that this player will play recorded blu-ray discs which some of its competitors in the same price range don't. I definately recommend this unit if you want to upgrade blu-ray."

What's great about it: Does play Dolby True HD & DTS Audio!! Not all do!! Second fastest Loading unit behind the PS3
What's not so great: None

"This unit for the price is very good. As I said in the Pros it does play Dolby True HD & DTS Audio!! Not all the models you see on here do!! Blu-ray Disc Picture Quality is superb, Standard DVD upconversion is not as good as my Pioneer DV-400V. So if you do not want to wait for next generation go buy this unit!"
