Good, but could be better07/21/2008
By Hecklerfrom WI
What's great about it: Great screen, ease of use, Point of interest database What's not so great: Sometimes goes weird ways, poor detouring capability, spotty Bluetooth, is not tolerant of misspellings
"I had been wanting a GPS unit for a while and had put off buying one expecting to buy a phone with GPS capability. After looking at a few and seeing their limitations, I decided to go with a dedicated unit. I looked at the Navigons, TomToms, and some other Garmins and after lots of research ended up buying this when they had a special at Best Buy. The unit has a great screen that was much more readable than the others I had looked at and I found it more user friendly (at least to me) than the other brands. I also liked the Bluetooth functionality, which is good for me because I plan to travel to New York and California a lot. The database of points of Interest also comes in very handy and I cannot tell you how many places I've found even in places I travel frequently. All has not been perfect though. It sometimes takes odd routes to locations and sometimes even wants to take different routes than it has taken before without me changing the settings. I have tried out the traffic service and it will allow you o detour around delays, but sometimes it goes around the initial part of the delay, but puts you back in the same traffic an exit or two down the road. Also, if you want to change this or make your own detour it does not do a very good job of going another route. If you don't like the detour it selected for you and you push detour again, it usually puts you back on your original route. A few times when I've tried to make or receive calls using my phone the unit has reported Bluetooth lost, but within a few seconds reconnected to my phone after I've already lost the call. One other thing I wish Garmin units would do like other units I've used is to gray out characters that do not exist in the database as you type. I have had a few occasions where I have misspelled words and the unit cannot find what I want. Other units that I have used in rental cars have left only letters of names available in the database has often gone a long way to solving this. Besides those few annoyances, it has been a good unit and from what I've read and seen there is no unit that can do everything great. I have been happy with my purchase and given the units currently available would buy the 760 again."

Good GPS07/21/2008
By NattyBfrom Colorado Springs, CO
What's great about it: Generally easy to use, provides good directions, easy to find points of interest What's not so great: FM transmitter staticy
"I bought my boyfriend a TomTom XL in February and recently decided that I needed a GPS as well. It seems to work well for him, but I wanted something different. Since I travel to CA frequently, it needed to have hands free capability with my cell phone - this is easy to set up and usually works well, but sometimes it cuts out/is hard to understand. The nüvi also plays mp3s (a big pro when in the middle of nowhere and there aren't good radio stations), but the FM transmitter doesn't work very well so I can't listen to them through my car's stereo. The mp3s are easy to load onto either the hard drive or an SD memory card. Compared to the TomTom, I found that it was much easier to find waypoints of specific types, such as grocery stores, except that it always takes me a while to remember how to change where it's looking for them. This unit also says street names (so long as you make sure to have it set to the correct voice - mine was set wrong at first) which is nicer than the TomTom. After having used both, I prefer mine, but I found it at just a bit higher price than the TomTom which is about right. It hasn't steered me wrong yet and I love having it when I travel for work or play."

What's great about it: small easy to use full featured What's not so great: MSN updates are slow
"I recently purchased a Garmin Nuvi 760 through Best Buy. Before buying I researched similar products and found the 760 to be the best for the features and price point for me. The software is similar to other Nuvi units. I did upgrade to the MSN Direct power adapter. The only thing I will say is that sometimes the updates from MSN are a bit slow, but it's definately worth it. Love it."

Excellent GPS07/20/2008
By zandivefrom New Haven, CT
What's great about it: Great routing engine, fast satellite fix, trip log, nice screen, bluetooth What's not so great: FM transmitter, battery life, no custom avoidances, confusing menu system
"For the right price, this is an amazing GPS. It has a brilliant interface, it's easy to connect to a computer (including Mac compatibility), and it's packed full of great features. My one issue with the interface is the somewhat cluttered and confusing Tools menu (the icons are grouped in a way that makes it hard to find what you want quickly, as related icons are not always in the same submenu). It has a great routing engine that has never gotten me lost (so far) and always picks the most logical route. It's easy to avoid highways, toll roads, unpaved roads, etc. However, I wish there was an easy way to set custom avoidances, likes avoid a specific road or bridge. I love the trip log feature, that leaves a breadcrumb trail as you drive. You can view this as a blue line on the GPS screen, but also download it to your computer to keep track of all the places you've been. Another great feature is bluetooth to connect your cellphone (I have a Nokia 6103). The device downloads your contacts and text messages, so you have everything available on the GPS screen. My only other issues with the GPS are the weak (and for me, unusable) FM transmitter, intended to play the sound through your car's speaker system. However, the system's internal speaker is plently loud and clear, and I use the Line out to connect to my car stereo. Also, I wish the battery life were a little longer (just under 4 hours), but this isn't an issue if you always keep it plugged in."

What's great about it: Easy to use, Clear dispay, Never gets you lost. What's not so great: The lady voice that tells you directions.
"I have had this GPS for a couple of months and I had used it numerous times. Not once has it taken me in circles like my old gps. You can chose your type of route such as shortest distance or faster time and it always works. I would recommend this GPS to all of my friends."

Garmin Nuvi 76007/12/2008
By cowdocfrom Saint Louis, MO
What's great about it: Accuracy; ease of use; portability What's not so great: POI could be easier to use
"I've been using this Nuvi 760 all over the country for the past month. It's accuracy in choosing the best route has been excellent in several cities. It has also saved me a great deal of time by avoiding traffic jams and rerouting me. Also, I have been surprised as to how often I have used the bluetooth capability of this device. I would recommend it to anyone who travels around the country, as I do, rents a car and may or may not know a creat deal about getting around a city."

Don't leave home without it!07/07/2008
By PastorRobfrom Asheville, NC
What's great about it: Bluetooth, Quick Satellite Reception, Accuracy, Small Size, Big Screen What's not so great: FM reception could be better, and battery life a little longer
"I am a Pastor who recently relocated to Asheville, NC from the Atlanta area. I don't know what I would do without my 760. Easy to navigate and finds most streets without a hassle.
It even blew the realtors mind with the accuracy as we looked for our new house. She went and bought one on our second trip out house hunting.
It left a special impression on my members when they just give me their address and I show up at their house without the hassle of confusing them with getting directions. They actually think I am gifted with directions, but it's my 760.
This is a must in my car and my wife now wants me to get her one too. (Thanks Garmin, just what I needed!)
What are you waiting for ... go get one and stop getting lost or getting to your destination late.
You will not regret it!!!"

By wrelessbfrom Atlanta, GA
What's great about it: bright, easy to read display What's not so great: no text-to-speech in this expensive unit
"I use the Nuvi to guide me through the maze of Atlanta that I just moved to. I would not have been able to find everything as easily as the Nuvi is great for guiding me throughout Atlanta. It is VERY quick to acquire satellite signal. Also the touch screen is much easier to use than my previous GPS."

What's great about it: I've only used it around town so far. It seems to work quite well.it's easy to use,and brings me back quickly, when i go What's not so great: there's no way to charge the battiers, unless i'am in the vehicle very dumb
"I would recommend this unit to a friend. I would also advise them to wait for a sale price like i did. Like i said (cons) i can't believe the company couldn't throw in a battiery charger for the price their charging"

Excellent GPS06/29/2008
By Dexter999
"Although the Nuvi 660 served me well, I upgraded to the Nuvi 760. Overall, it's a better unit than the 660. If you're deciding whether to get the 660 or 760, opt for the 760 because it has a newer map version, faster boot-up (but still has difficulty picking up signals indoors like the 660), no flip-up antenna, slightly brighter screen, QWERTY keyboard, better suction cup mount, and a few other feature enhancements. On the downside, the traffic receiver marginally works and the FM transmitter is still staticky like the 660. But if you already have the 660, no need to upgrade because it's also a very capable unit.
Garmin has a 2009 MAP that one can upgrade for FREE if request within the 30-day period of the unit's registration date. My unit came with 2008 preinstalled. Since I was unable to get the free upgrade via Garmin website, I had to call in and was put on hold for 25 minutes! Anyway, the tech support guy was very helpful in taking me through the steps to register for the free map update. I opted for the CD instead of download. It costs $10 for the shipping/handling via UPS Ground, but he waived the fee for me. Nice!"

What's great about it: Saves time and fuel What's not so great: Adding phone numbers, quality of speaker, no truck routing
"Well took out of box set up turned on and got signal within 15 seconds. Use it in my truck. So far so good. Just a few things. Noticed when adding an address to the unit you have no option to put in a phone number. You have to save the address to favs and then go back in to favs and edit it to put in phone number. A pain and takes a few more steps than it should. The other item was no option for truck routing. Had i known I would have bought a different unit. And so far no maps for this unit for trucks. But even with those things its been great. It helps alot when figuring out my eta. How far i have traveled and how far i have to go. Its worth every penny . perhaps in the near future truck routing maps will be available. Would certainly buy another. Hope you get one and good luck."

Great Buy, highly recommended06/27/2008

What's great about it: Bluetooth enabled, FM Transmitter, Fast start-up (compared to Nuvi 350), Bright Display What's not so great: MSN Direct Optional (it should come with the GTM 20 already), No leather case included.
"First off the physical aspects. Okay best buy has this GPS as an exclusive in a piano black slick color (it looks very nice). It is very light in weight and can fit in your pocket because it is just big enough. Now for the internal aspects. Okay internally it is beautiful. There is a new interface, (which is nice and big) compared to it's predecessor it is just beautiful. I like the bluetooth when it is connected to your phone. The reason I really like the bluetooth on this GPS is because it syncs with your phones contacts and also call history received and sent. Onto the FM transmitter feature. The FM transmitter feature is really nice because you can hear it very loud on your car speakers. I like that Garmin left in the MP3 player on this model because on the 260W they took out the MP3 player and leftout bluetooth plus the FM transmitter. I have had this GPS Navigator one week shy of a month and I would for sure recommend this GPS because it isn't only nice on the outside but is even nicer on the inside. So buy this GPS and don't look back at any of the competition GPS's."

Can't live without it06/26/2008
By PamBfrom Chicagoland
"After recently buying this, and using it on a trip to Florida, I wondered how I ever lived without it! It took us everywhere we wanted to go! The only issue that I had was the way that the nuvi told me to get to Florida from the Chicago area was not the most optimal route according to my family members, who have made the trip several times. However, this is correctable, as I was able to to to "Routes" and create my own route, by adding "Via Points" along the way that I wanted to go. For example, the nuvi wanted me to take I-80 to I-65, which I was told to avoid. I was able to enter 2 via points-- I-57 and I-24E. If I only entered I-57 as a via point, it eventually directed me back to I-65, but by being able to enter multiple via points, and enter I-24E, It ultimately took me exactly the route that I wanted to go, and I avoided the congested I-65! You have to play around with it to figure this out. Also, you are able to reverse routes that you create by "manually reordering" the destination points, which was pretty cool, and saved me the time of searching for the points etc. So that way, I was able to take the same route back to Chicago, and once again avoid that I-65 that all map sites (mapquest, etc) seem to want to direct you to. Also, while in route, we were able to find restaurants along the way that we wanted to go to very easily, and knew when they would be coming up. My daughter wanted to go to Sonic, so we just entered the name Sonic, and it told us where they were coming up at. The only thing is, besides giving us the locations of local Sonic drive-ins, it also gave us maSONIC temple, and things like that! But we just love our new Garmin Nuvi! And apparently, you can update for free to the new 2009 maps, if you do so within 30 days of registering the product. The website will try and charge you 69.99, but if you call customer service, you can do it for free within the 30 days."

Good effort at GPS06/23/2008
By Com1from Milwaukee, WI
What's great about it: Clear readibility and instructions What's not so great: No AC charger
"Intially got a competitive unit but returned it for the Garmin Nuvi 760. A much better quality GPS system. The touch screen is more rugged. I like the repeat last instruction feature with the 760 and the layout for the planned trip.
At times, it could not find the desired intersections I punched in. Also, it would at times give the turn direction while I was at the intersection. (The competitive unit would inform you well in advance and with a "ding" sound in case you weren't paying attention. It would be nice for Garmin to incorporate this feature)
While no AC charger, Garmin provides a PC USB cable which does take 4-5 hours to charge. This information is not in the online manual. Had to get from Garmin support.
Controls and options are easy to access. I especially liked that you can change keyboard layout to QWERTY.
A good GPS, but not quite ideal."

Unreliable(ish)06/17/2008
By Bimmer007from Washington, DC
What's great about it: Sleek design What's not so great: Unreliable routes, traffic inaccurate
"I drive to work 25 miles and always take the same fast route (highway). When I got this GPS, it gave me anoter route, which would have taken me another 15-20 more minutes! And yesterday, it was raining hard, not sure if the traffic utility really works, the route it gave me was heavier than the main highway and it says no traffic! Like, duh! so had to take a lot of detours which I think the GPS did a little justice in directing me to the main highway. Apart from that, I don't think this GPS (or Garmin in general) is efficient in providing best routes. I live in Metro Washington DC. So, I expect that routes would be updated. But guess not! Google map is totally better!"

What's great about it: very accurate and percise What's not so great: doesn't come with a case
"This is a good product and is very easy to use right off the box...although it doesn't really have an instruction book it's still o.k. because there is a help option. The screen is bright, clear, and able to adjust itself. Before purchasing I was worried about the danger of keep having to look at the screen while driving, but with garmin 760 telling me when to turn..I never had to look at the gps. The gps also warns you twice before having to turn and also let you know the street that you have to turn. Bluetooth seems to work fine, but I haven't play with that feature awhole lot yet except for a few short calls(I have the blackberry pearl). Touch screen work better than I thought. Basically this is a excellent gps and would like to tell you more about it's feature, but why take away the fun. Would recommend it and would buy again."

Best Purchase06/04/2008
By RareDiamondGemfrom Denver, Colorado
What's great about it: User friendly What's not so great: Hard to find good FM reception for radio choice
"If you are looking for a user friendly, safe GPS then consider this one. We bought this fm Best buy and had the Geek squad install it. Had no troubles whatsoever and really ennjoyed using it on our trip last week. We went to Vail & Apsen and only once did it get confused on our journey (all GPS do, especially if there are new road changes and sometimes you get freeway confusion) The thing we liked the most is as soon as we passed a sign for the change in the road speed, the GPS displayed it instantly. If you like to tour in your car then this is a great help when you are continuously wondering just what the speed is in certain area's. I read all the reviews and found them helpful, I am yet to try the pedestrian mode. To find your car in an arena would be fantastic! When typing in a store/place you want to go to, it automaticly offers every store of that name fm closest to furtherest away. I just put in the first 3 letters and it then opens a page with all the info I need. Bluetooth is a great help too - considering all (good) GPS with bluetooth are so expensive, this one does everything we want it too yes, well done Garmin!"
