Buyer beware   06/26/2008
By Sagan555 from Chicago

"This is the first GPS navigator we ever bought, so I can't compare it to any other units on the market; but as a product on its own, it has been a major disappointment. The routing is terrible. I don't know whether it's par for the course for GPS navigators, but this unit would often send us around a block for no apparent purpose when there's nothing wrong with going straight. (We mostly use it in the area between Chicago and Milwaukee) Perhaps I could have excused the quirky routing if it wasn't for so many other problems with this unit. The car charger broke within 3 months of not very punishing use. I contacted Magellan's service department for a replacement via email (as one is supposed to do according to their website). Now, 2 months later, they still haven't replied. The screen is also starting to show some ink leakage, if that's what it is. It's not cracked or anything, but the liquid crystal is spotting around the bottom left of the screen, and the area seems to be getting larger. The unit is also frustratingly slow in picking up where you are. It's extremely annoying, and we often have to switch it on and off and on and off until it eventually wakes up and tells you are where. Frankly, we think it's a piece of junk."

Buyer Beware   06/19/2008
By Snook from Atlanta, GA

What's great about it: Looks cool... that's about it
What's not so great: Slow & heavy

"I've owned a Tom Tom, a Garmin, and now this -- and the Magellan is BY FAR the worst GPS out there. Its slow... meaning that if you need to turn in 0.2 miles according to the GPS, you're probably already past the turn. Also, it takes FOREVER to correct your route if you miss a turn. This GPS will do you more harm than good when it comes to navigation.

This is an overpriced piece of junk. I recommend Garmin.

Waste of Hard earned money   06/11/2008
By Anonymous from SC

What's great about it: Big screen, clear, bluetooth
What's not so great: everything else

"This was one of the worst purchases I have ever made. The unit will freeze up. Sometimes when I turn it on, it comes up to some street in California. I live in SC. It is slow to reroute. It has taken me in the wrong direction on several occasions. I purchased my Magellan in March.
By May I had sent it back to the factory for a defective screen. The replacement they sent me didn't work at all and wouldn't charge. I am now on my 3rd unit in 3 months. Customer service was great the first time, very difficult the second until I spoke to the person's manager. Resolution manager was very friendly and prompt and sent me a brand new unit.

A little expensive, but worth every penny   06/01/2008
By Jerdrum from CT

What's great about it: Great features, 99% accurate when going to places, easy to use/figure out
What's not so great: a little expensive, have to re-set GPS everytime i turn it on, 1-Speaker not in great position

"If you can for go an extra 100-150 dollars, upgrade to the 4250.
PROS:
-They have an AAA roadside asst. which is great (if you have AAA *required), nice good size screen; it’s not too big, but not to small, tons of P.O.I.s.
CONS:
I have had a couple of negative things with the GPS.
-The very first time I turned it on, it froze for like 10 mins but never happened after that.
-There is also Bluetooth, which is a nice feature if you can mount your GPS correctly. **Quick Note: I went onto the Magellan website and they said that my phone could not be paired with the GPS unit (A Sprint Sanyo Katana II; it paired up within 2 seconds) I must also say that I never use the Bluetooth feature on the GPS anymore because of the speaker location. Since I have to mount the GPS onto my windshield, not dash, it echoes straight off of the window and the person on the opposite can’t hear you at all.
-The biggest issue I have with this is when I get to my destination or if I am close enough to the destination, I will turn off my GPS. The next time I turn it on, it picks up where I last turned it off, therefore the GPS could be 100 feet to 100 miles off. Other then that, I looked at a bunch before I bought the 4250, and I still feel that this one is the best out there!

Excellent GPS Unit   05/27/2008
By jcemme from Detroit, MI

What's great about it: Easy to Use, Large Screen, Accurate
What's not so great: None noted

"Excellent GPS unit. Very easy to use and accurate, with not too many features to overwhelm you. Product comes with all of the assessories you will need, including a nice carrying case. Bluetooth works for sync with mobile phone. I have a Palm Treo, but needed to manually enter the phone numbers and addresses of my contacts. SD card is limited to back-up use only. Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase."

so far so good   05/08/2008
By Sharee100 from Orange County, CA

What's great about it: plug & play
What's not so great: needs a hard copy user manual

"I bought my unit on special sale, so it wasn't pricey. Consumer Reports gives it a good rating. The screen is large and clear. The voice is clear. I have owned the unit 2 days. I used it to check accuracy from the store to home. It argued with me when I stopped for fast food on the way home. It was accurate to get me home. It even adjusted for driving within the parking lots at different shopping centers. The store salesperson was well-informed, polite, and helped me all the way to check out and handed me over to the installation tech who offered to install the unit. He watched while I installed it...plug & play. Distance to turns and street names announced are great. I do have AAA, but haven't figured out what the relationship is and my cell phone has bluetooth, but haven't found instructions for that relationship either. I like the antenna/power cord in one. I also like that I can charge the unit and use it outside of the car. Now I can go exploring on my bicycle."

Handy Helper   05/03/2008
By PeachGA from Atlanta, GA

What's great about it: Helpful, lightweight, easy to move from vehicle to vehicle
What's not so great: maps not always up to date

"I couldn't live without my GPS. Magellan is easy to use and easily moves from vehicle to vehicle. Just plug it in and it finds where you are and helps you get to where you want to go. This is our 2nd Magellan and is far superior to the older models. I'd be 'LOST' without it!!"

Great GPS   04/30/2008
By Windparson from Central Virginia

What's great about it: Ease of Use, voice command
What's not so great: Some weird power issues

"After much research and talk with friends who have GPS units and needing one for work, we picked the Magellan Maestro 4250. We have been almost totally pleased with our purchase. You can understand the "voice" that calls out street names and directions. The screen is good sized with out being to big. The suction cup did not want to stick to my wind shield and we followed all directions. But it sticks great to the suction disk you mount to the dash. Have had some weird power problems. As you are going down the road it will give the message that it wants to continue on battery power even though it is hooked to vehicle power. Magellan is investigating the problem and seem to think it is a power cord issue and have promised a new cord. Overall, we are extremely pleased with our purchase!"

Does the job   04/20/2008
By kitty1070

What's great about it: reroutes instantly when make a wrong turn
What's not so great: Slow voice recognition

"Nice large screen, battery lasted 5.5 hrs. I was driving on I-85 S where it converges with I-40 W. The GPS listed it onscreen as I-40 W; for a moment there I thought I was on the wrong road! I don't know how it chooses which name to use for a multi-name road, can be a little confusing."

Great GPS   04/05/2008
By scedarst from NC

What's great about it: Ease of use, text to speech, Easy to read disply
What's not so great: very few unless you are VERY picky

"This is a great GPS and the voice recognigiton is great. It requires you to turn down your radio(of course) The easy icons are simple. The AAA POI are great. The AAA roadside assistance requires you to have AAA(of course) but since I have a cell phone i wont need it. BTW my Treo syncs perfectly with the bluetooth in this GPS...I LOVE IT Glad I bought this one!!"

forced to use AAA roadside assistance   03/19/2008
By jove from miami florida

What's great about it: ease of use , nice looking
What's not so great: IF you want to use the EMERGENCY icon for roadside assistance you Better be a AAA Road side member

"I just buy the Magellan 4250 GPS an I am very disappointed of the way Magellan is using the GPS to force peoples to use the AAA roadside Assistance, I pay 400 dollars for this GPS ,one of the best fixture is the ease of use on their menu for the roadside Assistance , my wife that is no technically incline if it have more than one button she is in trouble, but you cannot change the number on the roadside Assistance you are force if you want to use the emergency icon to use the AAA roadside Assistance, I do not have AAA roadside Assistance or want it, I have another company better than AAA roadside assistance ,but I cannot use there phone number on that page ,because You cannot Edit the AAA road Assistance number .If I pay 400 dollar for this unit, I want to be able to use all the pages especially the emergency page and no been forced to use the AAA ROAD ASSISTANCE. I am returning this GPS and looking for one that does not force me to use their services.
You can be sure I will post this complain on as much web sites as I can.

Software freezes, Sometimes you have to retry several times to get the unit powered on.

A lot of trouble   03/18/2008
By DSTTechMom from Michigan

What's great about it: Great size screen, clean looking
What's not so great: Freezing up

"I purchased this item being a loyal AAA member for years and I thought I would be getting a great product. The directions, voice, accuracy and the overall look of the unit is 100%.
The cons, I had a hard time getting to enjoy the great features because the unit keep freezing up on me. My Bluetooth (Blackberry) would not stay connected to the unit and when it did connect the sounds was really bad. Getting the unit to re-connect was an issue.
I traded my unit in for the TOMTOM go 720 – so far I have been very happy (see TomTom for my review on that unit). If you do decide to purchase this unit from Best Buy – purchase the extended warranty so when you have to return it you will have fewer issues.

Poor Directions   03/16/2008
By NONICKNAMENONICKNAMENONIK from California

What's great about it: Everything Else
What's not so great: Poor driving directions

"I don't know about other models but this model will tell you to keep going down the street parallel to the freeway for about 2 miles, when you can just make a left, or right at the next street to get onto the freeway. Also it gets confused in Orange County, Ca. Let me tell you, that the driving options (fastest speed, shortest distance, freeway or no freeway) don't wok for spit. This Unit will take you somewhere in one direction and back in a different direction; usually one is not the way you want to go. Otherwise, if you like to zig zag go ahead and get it.
P.S. I have an older model Garmin, its features aren’t that great, but it gives great directions.

Navigate to a different GPS   03/04/2008
By PlymouthROCKs from Plymouth, MA

What's great about it: Sleek design, Screen size and clarity, functions
What's not so great: doesn't work

"I agree with a few of the other reviews. They clearly have some bugs to work out. I bought one yestreday it worked great for one day. I was configuring it the way I wanted it last night when it started to cycle on and off. I could never regain the GPS signal even after the reset. This unit would be increible if it worked. It has all the features and look that I wanted. I am moving on to a Navigon 7100 and hoping to have a better experience."

Good deal   02/25/2008
By GoneFishen from Jacksonville, NC

What's great about it: Good price

"Good price, good product. A GPS and hands free phone device all in one. I have read the other reviews and don't understand why they are giving this GPS such a low rating. I have not had one problem with it. You just have to talk clearly and give it time to react to your command."
