If you do buy get protection plan

What's great about it: cheap
What's not so great: constant problems
"I bought an Optoma HD70 projector about 2 1/2 years ago. Worked great for the first year; after that I have had to send it in about every six months to have it fixed. Two of those times just before the super bowl. Luckily I bought the protection plan after it runs out i will buy another projector, but not this same brand."

Good but some caution for over-heating required

What's great about it: Good resolution for the price
What's not so great: Heat becomes an issue over time
"All around a good unit. Can be used in a lit room but you need to set it to bright via the menu. It performed great for the first couple of months. After time it becomes color unstable when the projector heats up. Colors start fading to different colors what has a flicker effect. Imagine the blue transtioning into green and visa versa. Then over saturation sets in and all lightly color varying objects seem very blocky. A fan blowing colder ambient air into the inlet side, looking from the front it would be on the right side of the lens, takes care of this issue. Note: make sure it is a quite fan. This however was only a temporary solution for us, after a month it shows a banner of lines (scrambled signal) ours got bad so we needed to replace it."

Um... Why wouldn't you get the warranty?

What's great about it: Excellent price, with great quality. Bright enough for many lighting situations
What's not so great: Who wouldn't like a few more manual controls?
"And those of you who didn't buy the extended warranty through BestBuy, I feel sorry for. Its an absolute no-brainer! You get one bulb replacement, which is more than the price of the protection plan anyways, plus you get all of the extra coverage and convenience of the plan. People need to stop discrediting protection plans and really start reading into them more. They really are worth their price, and in many cases, much, much more!!!"

Astounding!

What's great about it: Bright, sharp film-like widescreen images with excellent color saturation
What's not so great: No problems thus far
"Projecting onto an eight foot wide screen. LBX mode produces sharp, bright, saturated widescreen images of the correct aspect ratios: 2.2:1 (Todd-AO and Super Panavision 70); 2.33:1 (CinemaScope); 2.55:1 (Original CinemaScope); and 2.75:1 (Ultra Panavision and Cinerama). An astounding little projector (footprint is smaller than a standard sheet of paper) at a remarkable price."

Great projector for the price

What's great about it: Small, great picture, good lamp life
"I had this projector for a year and a half now and it has been great. I don't have a scree, but I do have a huge wall to project on and the picture quality is great. Even in light, if you adjust the brightness enough you can see well. I did have one problem where the control panel on top broke, about a week ago, but the remote still worked. I took it back to best buy anyway and they replaced it immediately. These things happen though, with all units."

Best bang for your buck!

What's great about it: Amazing Picture Quality, Easy To Set Up, Quiet Operation
What's not so great: Only 1 HDMI Input
"I had reaserched other projectors and this one fit my criteria and was still under $900 (got it for $859.99). The lumens and contrast ratio numbers were decent enough for the type of application I was intending to use it for. If I wanted the numbers to be any higher I would have paid well over $1500. The instructions are pretty straight forward and the unit comes with everything (except and HDMI cable) that you would need to to get started. I have mine hooked up to a Samsung Blu-ray Player ( Model: BD-P1600 ) and I am projecting and image onto a basement concrete wall that I have painted using Behr Silverscreen Paint (#Silver Screen 770E-2) and the picture is truly amazing. I intend to purchase a screen once the basement is finished. I can't imagine a picture any better than the one I have already. This is really a great little projector!"

Things you might want to know

What's great about it: The picture is very impressive for a unit at this price.
What's not so great: had a very short bulb life, not even close to what was suggested.
"06/11/09. I bought the HD65 projector in June of 08. I am blown away by the picture. When people come over to watch a movie they can't believe how great the little HD65 works! O.K. Here is the problem I had. The suggested bulb life is 3000 hours on reg/low setting, or 2000 hours on bright. My bulb only lasted about 700 hours/six months. My projector was installed with the mount that Optoma recommended. I sent the projector to Optoma and they told me the bulb warranty only lasts three months. The replacement bulb is about $300.00 ! May I strongly suggest to buy the extended warranty, Optoma provides different options....contact them or you can buy the store service plan. I did buy an extended service plan and had my bulb replaced at no cost to me. I love the picture quality, the price was good(not as good as now), very disappointed about the bulb, I would still buy it again...with warranty."

worth every penny

What's great about it: Great picture and color. affordable price
What's not so great: need dark room
"I researced the net looking for the right projector for months. I finally went with this one when it went on sale for $809. I had a 47" 1080p lcd and this was going to be my first projector.I didnt know if I was going to like it but I am happy to report that I am very pleased with this little projector. It is very bright and produces very good color. If this would be your first projector I can tell you what to expect.
PROS: huge screen with theater like picture. Blu rays actually look really good although not in 1080p they still look good and run at 24fps. some movies like the scenes in "The Dark Knight" that were filmed in IMAX look absolutely breath taking. for the price of a 40" lcd, this is soooo much sweeter.
CONS: Your room needs to be pretty much completely darkened for it to look any good, with any light on it severly affects the picture quality wich makes this not for everyone. the "screen door" effect is a lot more visible than I thought it would be, especially if you are close. 80% of your video games will look horrible on a large screen( mine is 110" and gta4 looks like its on PS1)
overall I definetly reccomend this projector. If you want it to mostly watch movies at night or have a room you can completely darken (mine is in the garage so I have excellent lighting control). I have had this projector for 6 months now and have put over 600 hours on it, I cant remember the last time I turned on my LCD. Sure as much as I use it the lamp will probably go out next year but I will happily buy a replacement. its well worth it."

What's great about it: Nothing
What's not so great: Doesn't Work.
"My lamp burned out after only 1 month of use. It's supposed to have at least 2000 hours of lamp time. This product is not worth buying considering how expensive lamps are and the pain that it is to use the warranty through the company. I am extremely unhappy with this purchase. DO NOT BUY."

What's great about it: Awesome Quality, Good Price
What's not so great: LAMP DIED WITHIN 3 MONTHS !
"I really wish I could give an awesome review for this projector because the picture quality really was great even with a lot of light in the room.
I thought this was such a good investment until my bulb died with less than 300 hours of life ! Coincidentally, this happened 6 days after my manufactures warranty expired. Luckily I got the best buy 3 year warranty which includes one replacement bulb, but now sometime down the line I am going to have to purchase a $350 bulb !
Great Projector, just pray you don't get stuck with a bad bulb."

What's great about it: Good picure has HDMI 1.3 for fair price
What's not so great: Broke in 2 months
"I have owned the HD65 projector for 2 months, and lamp has already failed. Optoma makes you ship to to them for repair and jump through a bunch of paper work hoops. REAL PAIN. It has had less that 45 hours on it and unit states that it is 3000 hour lamp life. WHATA PAIN"

What's great about it: Great price and impressing picture.
What's not so great: doesnt come with everything.
"Hello, i bought one of these back in december and have yet to have a problem with it. I would say consider all of your options before your purchase as i had failed to do so. i had bought the television and had no speakers for a month and didn't take note that it had a different cable component than a regular television. you have to use the red white yellow cables for cable. you also will need a mount to the ceiling usually unless you want to put it on a table like i did but family pets like to walk in front of the light. i love the t.v. no problems with it but make sure you are prepared with sound and a hd box.
p.s. i have it on a wall without a screen or HD paint and it still looks remarkable."

A great little projector!
11/29/2008
By OddsBotkin

What's great about it: Ease of use, versatility, picture quality
What's not so great: None that I've found
"This projector has been a great investment.
First, the picture is phenomenal. Without that, nothing else really matters, and this projector delivers a a great picture from any source connected through HDMI. A bit of warning, if you are looking to connect cable or satellite through S-video, don't expect the same level of clarity. The Wii connected through the regular video connection is not bad, but nothing compares to the X-Box connected through the HDMI, which is also how we also watch our movies.
Second, the projector packs more of a punch than you might expect. We have found that we can watch television of play games in the room with the lights on, and the picture is still relatively strong. It depends on the placement of the lights or lamps in the room, though.
Third, the projector is extremely versatile. We bought our Optoma in February and have used it primarily in the same room. However, we have also built our own outdoor movie theater and hosted several movie nights outside. We projected the image on a 20'x30' white tarp while using a wireless FM transmitter for sound, and it worked out better than I had hoped. With the white tarp, you have the option of front or rear projection, and this projector is strong enough to handle either. It's strong enough that we were able to start the movies at twilight without a hitch. Plus, it is extremely easy to move from indoor to outdoor.
If you are looking for a versatile, well-made projector, I can not say enough about the Optoma, and if you are even considering it, do not hesitate."

What's great about it: clear picture, small only weighs 4 pounds!
What's not so great: nothing
"I would toatlly recommend this projector to someone. My family bought one for our media room, and we put the optoma projector up and were very pleased. We got the projector first to see how big of a screen we should get, and we found out that it best fits a 120" diagnoly screen! While we were waiting for the screen to come in, we put the projector and played it up against a brown wall and it was crystal clear even on the brown wall. We even had to turn the brightness down! Great product would never trade it for anything"

What's great about it: Everything
What's not so great: None
"I bought this projector about 6 months ago, and I have to agree with what everyone else here is saying. This is awesome. Why buy a regular TV when you can get this? The bulb last up to 3000 hours and its picture is amazing. With an HDDVD player hooked up through HDMI and a surround system, it feels like I have a movie theater in my living room. And video games, imagine a first-person shooter in real-life sizes. And as far as the only complaint I hear about projectors, the bulb replacement, once again the bulb life is 3000 hours. This projector has a hour counter in the menu, and so far, over the past 6 months, and with regular use, I've managed to put just over a hundred hours on it. So I have a feeling this thing will last a really long time. Why buy a 40" TV for $1000, when you can get up to a 348" with this projector for the same price?"
