What's great about it: Everything almost What's not so great: Needs the 2GB RAM to run Vista, and all of the AOL stuff
"I had to buy an emergency laptop due to my current life in IT. I had a MB crash on my old laptop. This was going to be a temporary replacement, but I have grown to love it. Once i deleted all of the extra software junk(as everyone says), I also upgraded to the 2GB RAM. This makes a big difference. I really wanted the Core2Duo, but the dual core is fine for now. I am now sold on Sony. Sometimes you do only buy the name, but this time it included a great inexpensive(not cheap) product! Plus I caught it on sale cheaper than the Acer, HP, and almost everything with a dual core processor. Thanks"

"I bought this computer on sale and I was very pleased with my purchase. I upgraded the memory to 2 gigs and the performance greatly improved. I can run itunes, media player, surf the internet, and burn a cd with minimal slow down. This is a great computer for school work, music, and videos. As for all the preloaded junk I would recommend that you uninstall all of the AOL junk and most of the Sony Vaio software too...its useless."

"I bought this for my daughter for college. This is a perfect student computer. Runs fairly fast on 1GB but is worthy of an upgrade at some point in the future. Ran the internet, MS Office 2007 and burned a CD with no slowup of speed. Huge hard drive, runs a little hot but not uncomfortably for the lap. Wifi picks up signals from outside a mile. This is a perfect laptop for the money. Only downside is cleaning out the registries to get rid of all the AOL spam."

"If you want a laptop that is both nice to look at and easy to use for a good price then this is the computer for you. It has a good size hard drive (I'm used to an 80 so it seems huge to me, especially for a laptop), dual-core processor, bright and sharp screen. The RAM is a little on the low side for running Vista so I might upgrade it eventually but I have not found it to be too slow with 1GB, even while running several programs. For basic uses like e-mail and word processing you should be just fine.
Making this computer even nicer is the size of the touchpad, one of the biggest I've seen on a laptop and nice large metal buttons beneath it. The keyboard has a good feel and is very quiet. Overall the design is very classy and simplistic. This is the kind of design you would expect to be paying a lot more for. It does get a little hot around the vent but not bad compared to other laptops I have owned and used. It also runs very quietly.
The few complaints I have are more minor annoyances. First, this computer comes with lots of pre-installed stuff that you probably are not going to want, specifically lots of trial software and AOL gadgets. This takes a while to remove. All new computers come with some wanted stuff installed but the amount on this one seemed a touch excessive. Second, it does not latch closed. Some people might like this but I would prefer that it did. It might also be a bit heavy for those who care about portability. It weighs more than other computers of a similar size that I have used and isn't exactly super-compact. Again, these are minor issues.
This is a great computer for the price. I am extremely pleased with mine."

What's great about it: I cant think of just one What's not so great: Junk programs/AOL software
"This is an awesome laptop. I bought (2) 1 mg sticks of memory to trade out for the (2) 512 sticks. That way it will run a little faster. I have not had any problems at all with it. It took me a while to go through all the junk programs it came with (mostly from AOL) and delete the stuff and trial programs I will never use. But that is probably like that on any new computer. Like other people have said-- it is a little on the heavier side and does tend to get pretty hot on the bottom. Not to the point where it burns, just keeps my legs warm. I would buy this laptop all over again. I did a lot of shopping around before I purchased this Sony. This was the best thing for the amount I paid."

Sony quality at budget price10/24/2007

What's great about it: Nice size, easy set-up, great price What's not so great: Too much AOL based software installed; model so new it's absent from memory configurators
"When I first considered buying a new laptop, my thought was, "I'd like a Sony Vaio, but those are a bit out of my price range." The more I've dealt with consumer electronics, the more I gravitate towards Sony whenever possible. I've had the best quality and reliability results with Sony products, and when possible I'll pass by a cheaper brand to get Sony.
I was quite pleased to find this Vaio on sale for $599, and checking on-line I found that Sony had launched a line of budget-conscious laptops with this model. So far, I'm very pleased with it. It's easy to use and handle, and while the vent-port gets a bit hot, the unit itself stays cool enough to comfortably hold on the lap while working (some older laptops I've used got too hot on the bottom to hold on the lap). I've used both the wired and wireless LAN features, and both work well.
I did have to go through and remove the default AOL settings, as I dislike the AOL toolbars, home pages, and other nonsense. This was a matter of familiarizing myself with the new Vista and IE controls as opposed to my older XP machine.
I'm currently using the trial versions of Norton Security and MS Works. I've had several people tell me about Open Office to use when the trial period for Works expires, so that is one budget option to explore for those balking at the price of the full version of the Microsoft product."

"The laptop is visually stunning, with looks worth double the price. Looks are similar to the more expensive VAIO CR model. The silver model is definitely very professional looking.
The processor T2310 is a CORE 2 DUO offshoot and hence performs extremely well, with very good battery life (~4hrs). The memory is sufficient for most purposes. Remove junkware.
The VAIO comes with nice SONY multimedia softwares as well video editing softwares.
I wish they had made the computer a little smaller, considering the wasted borders around the screen, which didn't have to be that wide at the bottom or top. Overall good design, slim and sexy.
If you like good style, this is a premium style statement feeling that you are paying too much just for the style. $599 is a steal, definitely."

"The notebook is an overall pretty good deal but there are a few things to take into consideration befor opting to purchase this or any other notebook. The operating system, Vista, tends to burden the system a bit if you only get 1G RAM (much better to get 2 G now since upgrading will run you $300-500 depending). Also, the software package. This comes with MS word and Acrobat Pro but only trial versions. If you buy the reader or the MS Office aftermarket you are looking at at least $300 and probably more. You should take this into account when deciding how good a value this is."
