CHEAP TAWDRY TRICKS
01/07/2009
By asdf0987from Earth
What's great about it: Stupid networking tricks What's not so great: Headphones on flashdrive-based are very cheap, no audio quality adjustments
"If you are interested in playing games or benign networking fluff, then go ahead and buy one. However, if you are at all concerned about the sound quality of your music, look elsewhere. The audio sounds very tinny, there are no tone adjustments. Even my old walkman MP3 had a graphic equalizer, I would at least expect Microsoft to have bass and treble adjustments. And with any flash-drive based models, MIcrosoft ships a very cheap pair of earbuds similar to those that the airlines give away for free."

Bad Headphone Jacks
12/31/2008
By beauzerofrom Atlanta, GA
What's great about it: The software, the $15 service, vidoes, background images, radio, really easy to use. What's not so great: HEADPHONE JACKS are bad.
"The ZUNE 3.1 software is WONDERFUL and I love the device overall...much better than the iPod.
HEADPHONE JACKS are faulty though. I am on my third one in 3 days. Its making me crazy. I am going to upgrade to the 120G version to see if its any better.
I would not recommend buying the 8G version and Microsoft should fire the engineer that came up with this screwy jack design."

What's great about it: the free download of games What's not so great: The difficulty of putting songs on the device
"People, I can not stress to you how bad the Zune is. It is the worst musci device ever! The zune software is SUPER slow and when it saids that it is syncing your music on to the device it really isn't. I didn't know how to put my music on to the device from my windows media player and the zune software is just not helpful. The whole thing is just confusing. I stayed on my computer ALL day trying to figure out how to put my music on to the zune. It's the most frustrating thing in the world! So if you want to save time and most definetly money, listen to me and listen to me clearly, DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT BUY THE ZUNE GO GET THE iPOD AND SAVE YOURSELF SOME TIME AND MONEY!!!!!!!!!"

Equal If Not Better Alternative To The "I Pod"
12/28/2008
By DDaavviiddfrom Boston, MA
What's great about it: FM Radio, Ease of Use What's not so great: MarketPlace selection limited compared to "I Tunes"
"I recived the 8GB Zune for X-Mas. The software was a snap to download and very easy to use (anyone who writes otherwise must be very simple minded). The only downside is that there is less offered content than on I Tunes. I wanted the Zune due to it's radio feature, it's ability to tag a song on the air so you can download it later is a great feature as well. All in all, this is a great product that is equal to, if not better than the "I Pod" Nano."

What's great about it: cheap What's not so great: battery life, breaks fast, terrible music store, bad iPod wanna be
"I bought the zune about a week after it came out and I was VERY dissapointed. 3 months after i got it it started breaking down. when i looked at the details it said it had a battery life of 20 hour paying music, well it only lasted 6 hours of music before you need to charge it,ON LOW VOLUME! the music store is garbage. half the music is unavailible andthere is a lot of problems when you buy a song it will have errors and wont load up. Sure it may be cheap, but wouldnt you rather get something you would enjoy 3X more? if you want a good mp3 or video player. go with ipods"

What's great about it: It is cheap, a lot of features compared to other players What's not so great: nothing is bad
"I got the Zune a week ago. I am very very impressed with the Zune's performance! I love the fact that it has a radio and it has great reception.
The overall look is very nice and the setup is nice. The user interface is just fantastic. I recommend the Zune to everyone I see.
While the screen is not huge it is a nice size to watch short videos.
I have a 8GB Zune just for the information"

NOT GOOD!!!
12/07/2008
By Garrett4from long beach, CA
What's great about it: the Zune Pad, sharing music, headphones What's not so great: Marketplace, sharing music, sometimes the battery drains, etc.
"There are some things that are good about this product, and even more that are bad.
The good things about the zune is that the zune pad is cool. This is that thing in place of the circle on an iPod. You just scroll up and down, left and right, kinda like a laptop. the other good thing is the headphone quality. I never saw any problems with them, but unfortunately, I accidentally broke them.
There is one part that goes both ways. Sharing music is cool, especially for discovering songs in full form. But the bad part is that not many people have zunes, so that is kinda pointless.
Now for the bad stuff. I see Marketplace as a complete failure. If you are the kind of person that likes to watch movies, definatly go for iPod. There are no movies, and the TV shows stink (in my opinion). The other thing is the music. Sure there are alot of the "popular" songs, but I found that many of the songs I was looking for were not there. The other thing that is bad (and I'm not sure if this is just me accidentally leaving it on, or a problem with my battery) is that the battery likes to drain. Sometimes I listen to It, and I turn it off, and I come back to it afew hours later, and it's completely dead. then I have to charge it, (which takes 2 hours) and then go back to it.
Overall, I don't like this product, and I am going to get an iPod."

What's great about it: Size, Look, and Quality What's not so great: Only 8gb
"The Zune is one of the best MP3's out there on the market. The sound quality is perfect and how easy and fast it is to add and remove music is awesome. It's as simple as drag and drop or just click sync to your Zune. I just also wished that the Zune came charged so that I could listen to it right away instead of waiting several hours before I can turn it on. Also if you are new to Zunes there is a secret way to turn off your Zune, Hold the back button and the down button on the touch pad at the same time and it will shut off the Zune insead of making it go to sleep when pressing and holding the play button."

Don't buy this if you don't have Broadband
12/05/2008
By OceanPoetfrom Lake Isabella, CA
What's great about it: Nothing I could tell, I couldn't even get it to turn on What's not so great: It won't do anything without software, and that's not included in the package.
"This could be the greatest player ever, and I had high hopes for it, especially since it has a radio to listen to as well as my tunes. But it doesn't do anything without software, and it doesn't contain any, not on the player or in the box; you have to download it from the Zune website. It's not an expecially big file, but for a dial-up connection, it took me 9 HOURS and 12 minutes to download the 131 mb file. I went to install it and the installation had to go back online to check for updates. After another 30 minutes it informed me that updates were 2% complete. I cancelled and I'll take this player back. I live in the mountains where there isn't any kind of broadband connection, and am stuck with dial-up. I won't be stuck with this Zune Player though. It would have cost Microsoft probably about 4 cents to include the software in this package, or to have loaded the program on the player itself--after all, it's basically a USB storage device. I'm having the same kind of clueless engineering on my latest PC with Vista. I've been a PC man since 1983, but I just became an Apple man..."

Irritated
11/22/2008
By hydranyfrom Minneapolis, MN
What's great about it: size, shape, audio/video quality What's not so great: frequent crashes, poorly sealed from dust, non-intuitive support software
"I tried the Zune instead of Ipod because of the "sync/social" feature. That part works --- if the Zune works at all. After some weeks without crashes, it now shuts down regularly in the midst of a file, whether audio or video, and the onboard reboot procedure only works about half the time. This leaves you Zuneless until you can plug the device into the computer that has your Zune "collection." The "social" feature doesn't function for software bought on the Zune marketplace, so why bother with the latter if you want to share even on a limited basis. The Marketplace rules read llike something from airport security, anyway. Physically, the device is already admitting nonremovable dust, and the touchpad gets erratic, particularl y when you've scrolled a bit too rapidly. Are these problems software or hardware related ? With this manufacturer, who can say ?"

Excelent player and same price as an ipod nano
10/28/2008
By minkisfrom Mesa, AZ
What's great about it: easy interface, touch-sensitive scrolling as well as the conventional joystick movement. no moving parts What's not so great: easily changes songs if bumped in a pocket, hard to remove sync cable if headphones are plugged in.
"to start, this is my second Zune. I also own the original 30gb version but I wanted something smaller. the 8g is limited on how much music it can hold, but it's still plenty for my 6gb collection. the wireless mode is generally useless unless you have a friend and want to send him/her a song, which can only be done a set number of times per track (I believe it's twice?). Generally it's just a battery waste. The unit does not come with a wall charger so if you are going to be without a computer you must buy one. The ZunePad can be turned on or off depending on what you like better, and if you're using the Zune in a pocket I reccommend you turn it OFF. the Zune software is easy to use and is constantly being improved. in other words, it's not Vista. transferring songs back and forth to another computer is painless and unrestricted. You can use the Zune to play through your stereo or TV using the Xbox360, a Zune AV dock or just a regular (and very inexpensive) headphone to av cable. The player does have a slight pause between songs, so those CDs designed to be played seamlessly get chopped between tracks but it's not a bother. If you are looking for an MP3 player, I would STRONGLY SUGGEST the Zune."

What's great about it: feels solid What's not so great: Zune program is not user friendly.
"Had to replace the unit within the first week and then again within six months. Unit constantly freezes up and/or stops in the middle of playing songs for no apparent reason. Turns itself off. Program renames songs and/or names of artists for no reason. A frustrating and extremely disappointing purchase."

What's great about it: I like pretty much everything about it. What's not so great: Sometimes the turn wheel will go to something else, a little annoying but over all good
"SO the first zune i had bought, the battery would not hold the charge so I would say to buy the warrenty for it just for that issue. I heard that alot of people were having that issue so I'm glad I did. Thats the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5."

What's great about it: everything What's not so great: no equalizer, or wireless internet
"this zune is very good. it supports music, zune games, photos, videos, and radio. The picture is very good for such a small device. The only problem is you cannot adjust your sound settings so that you can have more bass, treble, vocals etc."
