What's great about it: The zune itself is nice, very small, lots of features
What's not so great: Worst Customer Service and Support ever Encountered..
I'm sorry, but I tried giving the zune a shot after my Ipod nano ended up in the washing machine somehow.
DON'T DO IT!
Don't get me wrong, the device itself is very nice with lots of features traditionally absent in apple nanos, but at a price.
I've been on the phone with these people for hours, for different instances. First off, I had ordered a dock insert so the smaller zunes could fit in the av docks. They sent headphones once, and the wrong insert twice!!! After getting sick of this and the very slow software and the terrible Zune Marketplace software, I cancelled my account online. Still charged me for another month and would not refund, even when i was on the phone demanding it!
Please, if you read this consider Apple. Yes, it's another ten bucks, but worth it. Trust me.

bought one of these for my girlfriend last year and she uses it everyday in her car stereo and when jogging. she loves it. the only problems are the chargers. it seems to work well with a wall AC charger, but we have had difficulties getting the unit to charge fully with a usb cable. also, watch out for the 3rd party car chargers, we had to try 3 times to get one that would actually work. i blame this more on the cheap quality of the charger, rather than the Zune, but beware... it is finicky.

What's great about it: when it works, it plays music
What's not so great: battery life; freezes up; software
the whole thing freezes up frequently, especially if it is changing songs and you touch anything. So I went to online and discovered that they all do that- great, so I'm supposed to find comfort in bad electronics with other fellow annoyed customers have the
same problem. that's not quality.
the battery only lasts to the "halfway" mark and then the whole thing dies --
so I get about 3 hours out of it. I thought I would be smart and get a recharger for the car-- guess what, the recharger no longer works after 4 months of use.
The pc software that comes with it is cumbersome and does not give you functionality to actually manage and move your files -- you have to do everything through Windows and then let the zune software pick up your changes to package it to the zune.
in my opinion, this is a typical Microsoft product -- they didn't
take the time to quality control what they were releasing, they
cared more about getting it on the market. This would have been par for course except for one of the whole reasons I chose Zune was so it would be compatible with the awful Vista OS-- silly me, I should have known better. I have not had any other MP3's, so I can not compare them to say what would be better-- but I do know that after only having this for a year, I'm going to break down and spend the extra money to get something else because I'm so frustrated with this thing. This is a bad investment, a product that was not tested and not quality checked.

What's great about it: Easy to set up, fair price, fun stuff
What's not so great: Short battery life
I decided to get a new mp3 player and am content with my purchase of the 8GB Zune. I've had it for a month now and have had no difficulties. The features are great, it was easy to understand and install, and continues to be easy and fun to manage and organize. A relief from iTunes. There's lots of really cool things on the Zune, especially for the price. The headphones are terrible, but that's not a huge concern because it's worth it to spend money to buy nicer ones...and that's not even a Microsoft thing...all mp3 players come with generic headphones! Overall, a great buy.

What's great about it: It's Different! Not another IPOD groupie!
What's not so great: Not enough attachments.
I got my son the Zune 8GB for Xmas 2 years ago. I've never heard a complaint. I even gave him an opportunity to trade it in for an IPOD but he declined. He loves his Zune. It gets attention because It's different...not everyone has one. The only problem I had was finding a recharging clock radio docking station for it. I did finally find one from a generic brand name and have found it to be comparable to my other son's IPOD clock radio dock station. I would buy another Zune, if not just to be DIFFERENT.

What's great about it: Sound quality, screen clearity, battery life, durable, radio & fair price
What's not so great: Problems with freezing up, touch pad feature & difficult to understand
Overall, it's a decent piece of work. At first, it freezes up and has trouble with it's touch pad. I returned it three times before I came to realize they were all like that (unless I just had a bad batch). It wouldn't be my first choice for someone who's not good with electronics (unless you're one of those rare people that read maunals). I personally understood it because I'm just good with electronic, but friends of mine couldn't even figure out how to scroll. Though it's not all bad. The sound quality is clear and very had wonderful volume control. The screen it very clear. The battery life is very good for a person (like me) who is always out and doesn't have time to charge things. I think it's fairly priced and the fact that it has a radio was a deal breaker for me.

What's great about it: the price, easy to set up, durable
What's not so great: battery life, control pad
i first had the 8 GB iPod nano. i bought a zune because it was comparable to the iPod but a little cheaper. the iPod is a better product over all so if you already had one i'd say to stick with it. if you already have all of your music on itunes the zune software will autoatically transfer the music over to its library. some of the music purchased from the itunes store may not transfer over but you can burn it onto a cd and re-copy it to the zune.
if this is your first time buying an mp3 player, go with this zune. the control pad sometimes messes up when playing the games on it but its a minor problem. the battery life is shorter than an iPod but it also is quicker to charge. also, the zune marketplace music is cheaper than itunes music.

What's great about it: Has Pictures With Music, Great Audio Sound
What's not so great: Short Battery, Music Costs $15/Mo, Erases Music You Pay For all the Time,Short Batt Life, Uncomfortable Ear Buds
I strongly regret buying this, waste of money. I got it for Christmas hoping it would be a good MP3 player and I wouldn't have to pay $1/song like on an iPod. A lot of people I knew had iPods and I thought it would be great to finally get an MP3 player. You don't actually keep the songs, you like rent them with a zune pass. I don't want to pay a "Bill" every month just to have music on an MP3 player. Even if you pay the ripoff price of $15/mo it still erases your songs like once every two weeks. IThe ear plug things are also very uncomfortable in my ears. t is rediculous and DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!

What's great about it: Nothing
What's not so great: Customer service
I bought the Zune after having my iPod stolen from the gym I go to (I liked the FM receiver option). Not only was this device quirkie...it was ridiculous. I had been a past iPod user and was used to the easy changing and re-arranging of music, playlists, etc. The Zune will NOT allow you to sign in and just re-arrange or whatever you want to do...it locks up, makes you completely delete and reload your music in the order you want it....who wants THAT??? I ended up (after two weeks of trying) returning it to the place I purchased it) and bought the iPod. Two months later $14.99 charges started showing up on my VISA for "joining" Zune-pass. I took advantage (although they took advantage of ME) of their two-week trial offer. I cancelled the membership via the internet...and when (two $14.99 charges later) were popping up on my VISA they said "you didn't call our telephone representative, therefore your Zune-Pass was still extended for each month". WHAT??? Cancel does not mean CANCEL??? Nowhere on their website did they indicate that I had to phyically call and talk to a representative to cancel my subscrption. So very ridiculous! I asked "where" I was talking to and he said South East Asia (for customer service). I asked them repeatedly to refund my money they charged me for and it was "not something they were able to do from THERE". I pressed that they had very poor customer service standards and what they were doing monthly was stealing money from me via my VISA card with unauthorized charges...I'm here to tell you... he didn't care at ALL. BUYER BEWARE!! I vowed to tell anyone and everyone of my poor experience all around. Don't buy the piece of junk nor have to deal with the substandard Customer "non" support. I still have a headache >:-Z

What's great about it: screen, video, background image setting, zune pad (touch)
What's not so great: sometimes crashes and is slow, not an ipod... and has 2 extra buttons...
i understand that microsoft is a little late and is trying. but apple is the leader when it comes to portable media devices. operating systems on the other hand, sorry, but windoze is not nearly as cool a mac osx. ok, back to the zune, what reallly grinds my gears is the slow processor on the zune (compared to the 80GB and 30GB), when looking at an image, click, and it goes to the image menu, when scrolling down, its waaay slow.
but hey, that doesnt really matter. the wifi is an amazing feature, you can zync with other devices, when you send songs to other devices, you can only listen to it 3 times. but when you send a photo, you have the choice of keeping it or deleting it from your inbox (you can delete songs too).
its too bad you cant send short video clips though, thatd be cooler. anyways, if you have windows and adore microsoft, then this is the ultimate player for you, cause zune software doesnt run on mac, and itunes runs slow as h*ll on windows. same thing applies for ipods/iphones...

What's great about it: radio...
What's not so great: everything!
I recieved one for xmas of 07. it worked okay up until feb. 08 when I left it on my shelf for a couple days, finally when i went to bring it with me on a trip, it would turn on & give me an error message. id plug it in to a power source & it would continue to give me the same error message. i called zune service & they sent me a new zune. low & behold, not even a few months later in june or july, i was having problems with this new one as well! the battery would be charged fully & as soon as i start listening to it, at the most random time it shuts off. theres no way to turn it back on as the reset buttons wont turn it back on. the only way to listen to it is if its plugged into the computer or the wall. im S.O.L. on this one, my warrenty is up. stick with ipods people, ive yet to have a problem with my 1st gen ipod nano & ive had it for years!!! zune sucks!

What's great about it: Easy to sync, great podcast and audio book handling, sounds great, small rugged and great for the gym.
What's not so great: Tricky to find the center of the touch pad. Wish the 16GB model was more available.
With some birthday money burning a hole in my wallet, I decided it was time to buy a new MP3 player. My 2GB Sansa e250 had too many irritations. I investigated all the iPods, Sony’s and Zunes, and decided on the Zune 8GB. I wanted a 16 GB, but couldn’t find one anywhere and didn’t want to wait any longer (plus I had some reward zone coupons for BestBuy)
Since I mostly use my MP3 player at the gym, I wanted a player that could withstand activity, was easy to operate, not too expensive, and was more or less automatic with Podcasts. My older 2GB Sansa e250 was too limiting on space, and took too much work to update. Most of my music is in WMA format so I really didn’t want to mess with an IPod. I love the ITouch but I think it’s a bit bulky for the Gym, and it’s a lot more expensive than my Zune.
I am very happy with the Zune 8GB. I would have liked the 16 GB for the extra space, but almost no one carries them. With a few Reward Zone coupons I was able to buy the 8GB model outright.
A few features I like that I did not find reported elsewhere: The Zune will remember where you left off with Podcasts and Audio books when you go back to them. It has an “instant on” feature, taking literally no time at all start up. My old Sansa took a minute or so, to refresh its data base every time I started it (because of the micro SD card slot). The Zune menu is nicely organized, easy to navigate, and the touch pad is intuitive and easy to use. The text on the screen is somewhat small for my middle aged eyes, but is still readable. I’ve been surprised how roomy 8 GB’s are. I have a very large music collection but I’m able to keep my most current albums on the player, plus a few Podcasts, and then sample new albums from Zune pass with plenty of room to spare. You can only listen to one song at a time anyway.
The Zune handles Podcasts very nicely. Podcasts update automatically, including deleting ones that have already been listened to. The Zune software makes it very easy to set up and manage podcasts: a must for the gym. You can sync wirelessly through a network: great if you leave your cable in your notebook bag and are too lazy to dig it out. You can also sync and download tracks from Zune Marketplace wirelessly. It will play both Audible and Overdrive audio books. This is great news since our local library supplies Overdrive books for free.
I gave Zune Pass trial a go and I think I’m hooked. Having a virtually limitless supply of music to sample is addictive! It is set up very nicely to find music that you like. Since you get to keep 10 tracks a month, the $15.00 monthly fee becomes a pretty good deal. Messing with my music collection is my main hobby, and Zune pass really expands my horizons. I’ve been able to check out albums and artists without risk, and find old albums from my LP days that I never got around to converting. The Zune software tracks what you listen to, and kind of documents your listening patterns. It’s a feature that is more useful than it might sound.
Finally, the Zune sounds very nice indeed, and is far clearer than the three or four other MP3 players I’ve owned in the past. I’m very satisfied and think it’s a very good value at $139.00.

i had my first zune for a month and then all of sudden it just stopped working. so i took it back and got another one. it was working fine and then the battery started to be really bad. the battery will be fully charged and my zune will freeze and turn off and not turn back on. so i have to drain the battery for 2 days and then charge it. its such a pain. it makes me mad because all the money you spend on them and then they break so easily. i would recomend getting somehthig better.

What's great about it: It looks nice
What's not so great: Terrible battery life, software sucks
I just bought the Zune 8 and I am returning it after 2 days. Terrible battery life. I charged it for 4 hours and the charge lasted little over an hour. There is no sound equalizer so you are stuck with the sound. There is no user manual. I went to the Zune site for support and it is not that good. You can not download, that I have found, the user manual in one PDF. You have to print bits and pieces. The software is not that intuitive. After playing with it an hour and checking the web site I finally figured it out. Overall it is just not worth it. There are MUCH better players for less money which are less trouble. I am taking mine back.

What's great about it: Easy sync, Good On-line player service, Decent Customer Service
What's not so great: Poor Hardware
As for the on-line music service, Zune is getting better on a weekly basis. There is a large selection of music in all genres. For $14.99 a month you can sample as many songs and/or complete albums as you like. You also receive 10 free songs per month as part of the $14.99.
Here's the bad. I bought my 8gb player in late Dec 08'. In Feb 09' the player froze and didn't come back on. I then went through all the to-do's for troubleshooting. After 2 days, I allowed the battery to die hoping it would help in the reset. No luck. I called support, they walked me through the same steps with no luck. The player never worked again. Customer support was very helpful, they sent a box to me for shipping back to them. All at no cost to me. Finally after a 2 1/2 week turnaround (to them and back to me) I received a NEW player. I received the new player and IT DOES NOT FUNCTION!!! I called back and they were apologetic and we are going through the same steps again.
I hope that this is isolated. But receiving a brand new device that does not work was completely ridiculous . Wouldn't it be tested first?? BEWARE.

What's great about it: slim, neat looking, touch pad, lcd screen is very sharp, lightweight, headphones that come with it,
What's not so great: nothing.
For the record, I stay clear of IPODs/Apple products. I started out with a Creative Zen V which works fine but it is only 1GB and not nearly enough memory for me to use. Then I purchased a Samsung YP-T10 which broke in the first day and from there ended up buying this Zune 8GB. I couldn't wait to get home and set it up. The player is very thin and neat looking you will love taking it with you and the features of it are fantastic! Music, Videos, Games, Pictures, setting pictures as wallpaper, and a built in radio. I bought a bunch of hurley socks for it and a case to keep it from getting broke. I would highly reccomend this player for anyone looking for an alternative to ipods and a player that's sexy, reliable, and easy to use.
