What's great about it: Lots of storage, great software, very nice

"this is the best mp3 player yet. i started with creative mp3's then ipod, now since i got the zune im not getting anything else. the only problem is that the software is hard to get used to and might seem bad but after you figure it out its awsome."

HEAR the Difference!!! 04/28/2008

What's great about it: Big screen, FM radio, and cool features.
What's not so great: NO EQUALIZER!!!

"I had been looking at the zune and ipod for quite some time now. After a little research I decided on the 80GB Zune. Initially, i was blown away. It has a lot of cool features, but when i put in the earphones to listen to music i was severely disappointed. As a musician, I have well trained ears and the quality of the sound was horrible. Naturally I started to look for an equalizer only to find that there wasnt one. So I then tried several other earphones and headphones. Still, all i got was flat, dull, and nonexiciting sound. The main purpose of these devices is music, so it has to sound good. I took mine back and exchanged it for the 80GB iPod which has better earbuds and 22 EQ settings. If your main intention is listening to music go with the iPod, I promise you wont be disappointed by the sound and you will most certainly HEAR THE DIFFERENCE."

Amazing MP3 Player 04/28/2008

What's great about it: Great sound and picture quality
What's not so great: Headphones make noise when moved

"The Microsoft Zune 80 is the first MP3 player I've owned. It has everything that I need, and much more. The main reason I bought it was to use in my car, and it works perfectly for that reason. As I stated for pros, the sound quality and picture quality are amazing. The only problem I've found with it so far is that when the headphones rub up against something, you hear it quite easily. I'm guessing it's because of the type of material the outside is made of, which feels kind of like a bungie cord. Other than that, the Zune is a great MP3 player which I'm sure will last me for a long time."

"This is the best MP3 + other features you will get on the market. Efficient, perfect size, with music, video, pictures, podcasts + more, the 80 gb harddrive is perfect to store everything you could want. I recimmend these over ipods. The best possible thing you can buy if you want to listen to music right out of your pocket. I love the Zune, they are perfect. The touch pad is great, easy you use, Zunes > Ipods. Zunes are so much better in every way than the ipod. And the wireless connectivity to other Zunes, is so great and useful, lets see an ipod do that."

"My wife and daughter bought IPODs I bought the Zune. My daughters IPOD can no longer be connected except to charge and fixing is more than a new one. My wife's doesn't work either. My Zune is going strong. The IPOD has proprietary formats and everything must be converted. Zune uses normal Windows formats and I haven't had to convert anything. There will never be another IPOD in our house!!"

Better that IPOD 04/28/2008

What's great about it: Lots of space for all your movies, music, and pics. I also have a 30GB version that is just about full.
What's not so great: Trying to figure out what else to put on it.

"I really like being able to have my favorite show or music at my disposal. I also keep pictures on it to show off to my friends. This is much better than the IPOD. The price is right and there is some third party software for converting similar files to be played on the ZUNE."

"when my ipod of eight years broke this year i thought i would try something new and get a zune. bad idea. it is harder to use. the turn wheel usually doesn't work and it is extremely slow. if i were you i wouldn't buy this product."

An iPod Replacement 04/27/2008

What's great about it: Large storage, great screen, radio, very nice hardware
What's not so great: Weak software, limited video formats supported

"So my iPod died a few weeks ago after only like 18 months, so I was not looking forward to buying another. The Zune is a worthy replacement. Audio sounds quite good, video looks great, built in FM tuner and strong battery life when the wireless is turned off.
There are a few caveats. The Zune Software while not hard to use is not quite as good as iTunes. Also, the video player takes WMVs and MPEG4s(no avi, divx/xvid support), but there are free programs out there that make the conversion so that has not been a problem.
All in all, it has been a good purchase and if you want a music player with good video capability, look at the Zune."

Zune Over an iPod Any Day 04/26/2008

What's great about it: Glass Screen, Software, Sharing, Social, Radio, Good Amount of Memory, NO SCRATCHES WHATSOEVER
What's not so great: No Extras, No Internet (Compared to the iPod Touch)

"This is the best MP3 player I've ever had. See, I buy all of my CDs and since I have a bunch, most of them couldn't fit on my old 30GB iPod. So, the 80GB Zune gives me plenty of room for whatever I want. Also, I went through 3 iPods, but it always had a problem that couldn't be fixed. My first and second had syncing and battery problems and my third fueled my decision to get a Zune. My iPod had an internal crack, which went across the entire screen, syncing problems, battery probems, and the headphone jack was fading. I know what you're thinking, this guy can't take care of his stuff! Well, actually I do and most of the stuff that happens, I don't even know it happens until I see it for the first time. With my Zune, I have zero problems. I just miss the clock and games, but I bet those are coming in the future. In a nutshell, buy a Zune and forget about an iPod."

Best MP3 yet 04/22/2008

What's great about it: Lots of room for Everything, Movies, Music, Pictures
What's not so great: A little big, (ok for watching a movie but you don't do that every day)

"We have had 4 different Mp3 players now, Creative's Zen Micro Photo, Sansa E 250, 1gb old Sansa Sandisk and now the Zune. This one is by far the nicest although the biggest. We have had no problems putting files on it or having to rename anything. Have not put movies on it yet but the stock music videos are excellent sound and pictures. Would highly recomment the largest MB you can afford as you are only going to put more files on it not less and there is only a fifty dollar price difference between the 30gb and the 50gb. Very much worth the extra money. Wish the 50gb came in different colors though...."

Much better than an IPOD 04/22/2008

What's great about it: Wireless sync, interface , Zune software , screen size
What's not so great: closed wi-fi, Zune software

"If you do NOT need:

1. wi-fi
2. iTunes

Then this is far superior to an Ipod (not a Touch) . Once you load the device using Zune software (which is not that bad , but believe it or not I prefer the iTunes interface and usability) it is very easy to use and get started. I love plugging it in and having my subscribed podcasts sync automatically without connecting to a PC.
The lack of Wi-Fi is only an issue if you need it. I have a Blackberry so I get my wi-fi fix there. Otherwise if you truly need wi-fi in an mp3/pvp/etc player then sacrifice storage and price and invest in a Ipod touch - Otherwise Zune is superior than an iPod Nano or Classic"

Nice Portable A/V Player 04/21/2008

What's great about it: Great capacity for the size, nice osd, wi-fi sync, xbox 360 compatible, great battery life, easy to use.
What's not so great: Moderately poor software design, difficult and time consuming to organize & name music

"I havent had a good mp3 player for a few years. I wanted to wait until these things got a little more tech-savy and functional before buying a replacement. My last one was a .5gb samsung and although it was ultra-portable there just wasnt enough storage, and eventually it just quit working. I did some research and decided to buy the Zune 80GB. I love being able to sync music, video and pictures via my home wireless network. Also cool to trade songs with other Zune users on the fly. Unless you need the physically smaller unit youre crazy not to get the 80gb. Its 10x the space for an extra $50. I have thousands of songs and 20 or 30 music videos and Ive barely broken past 6gb.

I read a lot about the Zune software being difficult to use and not working well. I figure it must be operator-error and that Microsoft (the creator or Windows, Office, Xbox 360, etc etc) would never make such a bad software package for their mp3 players. I was wrong. Its not the worst software Ive ever used but it certainly has a lot kinks that need to be worked out. Go download it and try it out before you buy your Zune and see if you like it. The Marketplace side of things is great and works well. They even have Zune Pass which allows you unlimited download access for almost any songs/albums for $15 bucks a month.

The problems come into play with the sorting & filing of your existing music. To be properly sorted all files need album, artist, track info, album art, etc to be stored correctly. These attributes are unable to be edited within the Zune software. This means you need to use Media Player or Mp3 Tag software to edit your mp3 files. This can be a nuisance but you would want to do the same thing for any player and it's a one time deal. Once your files are saved correctly then you have a sweet mp3 collection.

Overall I am very satisfied with the Zune and I think it's one of the better mp3 devices out there."

"I switched from my 4 year old Zen Micro to a new 80gb Zune and I absolutely love it! I was able to move all of my music, a bunch of pictures and SOME videos. The only downside I have with the video player is the lack of DivX support. A lot of videos that I would like to watch on the go are in the DivX AVI format which is one of the few not supported. The only other downside to the Zune is the lack of an ability to que up multiple podcasts. You can only play them one at a time and then you have to manually switch to the next podcast. Not that big of a deal, but it can be annoying. Other than that, this is probably the best player for the money. A must buy if you are looking for an alternative to the iPod"

Great competitor to the IPod 04/20/2008

What's great about it: Good sound quality, beautiful screen, size
What's not so great: lack of videos on zune.net, no equalizer

"The zune is a great alternative to the IPod... it has plenty of storage space (80 gig) for music, videos and pictures. The design is sleek, even though the physical size of the device is somewhat large. The screen is just beautiful, it might actually work for watching videos, like the latest episode of your favorite show.... unfortunately you can't download any movies or TV shows from Zune.net. The zune sounds good, but at times I wish it still had the equalizer. The wireless sync feature is really nice to have, but with the size why wouldn't you just put your entire music collection on the zune to begin with. One of the best things is that Microsoft is continually updating and improving the zune software, and you don't even have to pay for the updates (unlike the IPod)."

iPod killer 04/20/2008

What's great about it: Screen, user friendly, good headphones, MUCH better materials than iPod
What's not so great: Missing equalizer

"I bought this player instead of iPod Classic and I'm glad I did it. It's got great big screen, only resolution could be better for videos, but it is great like it is for everything else and at least it can work longer on one charge. It is usable for videos but still, it is better to watch it on a big tv ;-)
The touchpad is very sensitive and if you need to move only one position, you can press it so you can never be missing what you want like on iPod. Also menus are very intuitive and the software works good too. If you do not like the software, you can use some alternatives, not like with iTunes & iPod where you have no choise.
The body is a little thicker than iPod's but it is made from MUCH better materials that don't get scratched so fast. Most of iPod users use cases because of this but Zune don't need it that much which compares its thicness.
If you are not audiofil you will be OK with the headphones. I see more problem in missing equalizer, because sometimes I really need to make at least small adjustments but there is no equalizer :(:(
Conclusion: iPod is dead, buy Zune!!! it only should have had equalizer"

Only trade 3 songs per day
Only play traded songs 3 times before unusable
Other independently made music manager programs which are more proficient are made erroneous by Micro$oft"

"Wow. ALL MY MUSIC IN ONE PLACE. Not at all complicated to use - even for techno phobes. Sound quality is remarkable - I'm hearing things in my music that I never heard before. The controls are intuitive and, well, cool. The screen is gorgeous and graphics are great. Because it is so easy to use, it is actually enjoyable to add music and to create playlists. If you want lots of storage and a device that you'll want to use ALL THE TIME, this is for you!"
