What's great about it: Classic 2d Gameplay, Attractive Artwork, Challenging Levels What's not so great: Seems too difficult or cheap at times
"I was very impressed with this game. The difficulty was just right, aside from being frustratingly difficult on your first attempt or two at a level. The nature of these games is such that once you play a level a few times, you'll learn the spawn locations and it will get much easier.
There are about 9 levels in this game, so the length is just about right, and pretty much every level has at least one cool giant boss to fight.
This title is classic 2D gameplay that does not betray Contra's roots."

2d where it belongs

What's great about it: Responsive controls, excellent hit detection, unlockables for replay value. What's not so great: No online co-op only local co-op.
"If you like side scrolling shooters, I highly reccomend this one. If you loved Contra 3 on your SNES, I highly reccomend this one. If you want the original Contra complete with Konami code goodness, I highly reccomend this one. The Teen rating is appropriate lots of blood (many different colors) bullets and explosions. There are two unlockable characters that are female, and of course in bikinis & combat boots. It is as hard as it's always been, actually a little harder, I got thru Contra 3 easier than this one. You might want to get the NERF Armor for you DS---this one definitley inspires controller tossing. No Online mode, which I have to admit is the only thing that dissapoints in this game."

Challenging, but incredibly fun

"Contra 4, which serves as a 20th anniversary celebration of the beginning of the Contra series, is hard. Really, really hard. But that's a good thing--it's nice to see a video game that makes you work to finish it, and the challenge adds to the replayability. The levels are well designed, and the bosses each offer unique challenges. The arcade mode--the main Contra 4 game--would be a solid game by itself, but the unlockable content is what makes this game a top-notch title to me. Challenge mode offers single-level challenges that give a different spin on the game, and also allow you to see levels you might not have reached yet. Thankfully, you can unlock this mode by finishing arcade mode on easy difficulty. Add in the ability to unlock two other classic Contra games, and there's a ton of different ways to play Contra 4. And that's a good thing, 'cause if you really want to beat it, you're going to need the practice."

Very Challenging Game

What's great about it: Great story, gameplay, What's not so great: Nothing
"Boy, do i suck at games or just Konami wants to embarrass me and others. Besides that, the game is beautifully made and is very fun and challenging like the classic Contra 1, 2 and 3. I would have put that it was hard in the cons, but, that was my own mistakes. And for people like me who are still on level 4, go give it to a relative and brag that you beat it too many times."

What's great about it: Very Challenging What's not so great: What Cons?
"Easy the best game I've played on the DS so far. I've had the game for a few months now and I've only been able to get to lvl 7, and that only because I REFUSE to use the 99 life code."

What's great about it: Old School Contra Feel What's not so great: Very Difficult
"Everything about this game is a throwback to the classic Contra games of your childhood. This is a must-have for any Contra fan. Very difficult game, which some may consider a "con," but I like it. Many DS games are way too easy and have no replay value...this one does!"

Best DS Game To Date
11/22/2007
By jchazzyfrom Southern Wisconsin
What's great about it: Challenging, Highly replayable What's not so great: Not suitable for casual gamers
"Game is hard, hard, hard. And I love it. Tired of all the easy games for the DS. They finally gave me a challenge. Pays homage to original Contra in all the right ways. The graphics are great, brings back the fun of the side-scrolling genre. Has both a standard Arcade mode with 3 difficulties that are fine tuned for balance as well as a Challenge mode that tests your skills in various ways. Also, includes unlockables, such as the NES Contra and Super C, as well as comic books, characters, museum of the past games in the series, and exclusive interview with series producer, some guy named Nobuya Nakazato. The music from the old series, as well as new tracks, is really amazing. You could play this game over and over and still have a blast. I personally found the game challenging and sometimes, down-right hard, which, if you are a true gamer, you will love. If you're not a die-hard Contra fan, this will get alittle tideous, but try it, you can't go wrong, you will have a blast. I have had it for 4 days and can't put it down."
