Don't pass this up. Excellent Value02/23/2008
By texaspjafrom Houston
What's great about it: Has everything. Best value for price. What's not so great: Dark number lettering on keyboard.
"Hard to believe I found this in a Gateway. Only a few laptops even offer an 8800M graphics card and you’ll pay over $2.5K for a name-brand. You can't beat the graphics card anywhere at this price. Expansion slot, eSATA, HDMI, VGA, Blue-tooth, built-in camera, and HD audio output. Where's the kitchen sink. I use Netflix and my HDMI output to my 42 inch plasma TV adds new value to the instant watch movies from Netflix. The wireless connectivity is excellent and provides the maximum reach and quality on my pre-n router. Don't worry about the slower CPU. The performance is great for games and very adequate for imaging software. I'll upgrade to a faster processor later when the prices fall a little more. You can already get a T9300 2.5GHz for $320. Don't know if Gateway will offer a Blu-ray DVD replacement drive, if not you can use the eSATA port. It rocks already, and gives you upgrade capability later. This is my desktop replacement. Not the best for traveling as it is large and heavy. Hey but you can if you want."

Yes taking candy from a baby02/19/2008
By Acklendfrom Belleuve
What's great about it: Versitility and expansion's What's not so great: minamul
"K to start with this laptop was on reg price for 1699 i missed the 1250 price then just under the 14 day marker it went back to 1199 now thats the best priced laptop i have ever seen. just a quick glance here im a 20yr + comp tech so just to get a basis of how im going to type this comment. For this laptop is just stealling candy from a baby at 1199 but if it gose back to 1699 still the very good buy. Now this laptop has expansion bay for a snd hdd so u can do duel boot or raid (not bad) now also u can upgrade the cpu to a 2.8 (thats from GateWay them selfs. Now for features just drool with the 3 gig's of ram , nividia 8800 512 mb deticated with minimaul share and hdmi wide 17" and hdmi out put ya the list goes on. Now i would say for gaming this dose a very good job to get the most out of it just turn on the power opt's to porformence and the same with the visual effects part to so u get all it has to offer and for just for fact i got a desk top on dsl and i upgraded with draft wireless N and me and my girl can both play Lord of the rings at the same time with no hicups and the frame rate on graphics and just as good. So the other thing i can rave about this laptop is u compare the stats of what it has from blue tooth to external ports and you'll find this laptop fits multi rolls from a Tech like me refreshing in Collodge to gamers to pro's on the go also let me add it dose have a 1.3gig pxl cam with uni mic not bad i played around with video emailing with it and yes it rocks. so for a would say for mid rage for high low range price point u cndnt do a better job on the find my hats off to gateway and bestbuy. now for the unfortunite down sides the con's. the only two i have found is the ram memery is only 600mhz (not realy a down side but if u want to do alot of rendering or compiling might to go 800 but if thats not an issue its good to go) 2nd is that the finish is glassed top so the finger prints (but dnt worrie i found in the tv & video section they got a cloth & spray combo that works and helps dust to) Yes these arnt realy down's but all i could find from a tech usage point ^.^ wen u go laptop shoping just look at stats and compare what u want and can use and wish list and compare that to this find you'll see that this will fit mutible bills here any how good luck and have a nice day \(=^.^=)/ <== full happy face stamp <=== ps. this laptop made 2 allienware ppl jellus (average price tag is 5k) this is 1199 with more ability than there allienware for long jev (meaning it has upgradeability for less money then they would have to pay to keep them up to date)"

Very Impressive02/19/2008

What's great about it: Design, Full size keyboard, Looks fast just sitting there. HDMI What's not so great: Battery sticks out about a 1",Screen Res, Cpu speed, Outside Could have been matte instead of gloss
"For the price it is realy the best deal out there. I have allready ordered a T9300 to replace the T5450. The 8800GTS shows up as 8800gt in the setup so look for some new drivers soon. If you know laptops, then I can definatly tell you that when this sits next to my XPS M1710 and XPS m170 , this realy stands out. I was just ready to buy a XPS M1730 from dell outlet for $2200 when I stumbled on this. I wish it would do 1920x1200 but my I am so happy with the display that I can overlook that. The battery is also not flush with the bottom. It sticks out a inch on the back. It also has a extra hard drive bay so you can add a second hard drive. If you have a chance to get one, go now. Go get one. Plus the color is pure awesome, especialy if your a Longhon fan."

Outstanding deal02/18/2008
By PopFreakfrom Des Moines, Ia
What's great about it: Price... Gaming What's not so great: headphone jack and other plug ins
"I feel like I got the deal of a lifetime here. My laptop died on me Friday night. it waqs 3 years old next month, so Saturday I went to best buy to buy a new one. I'm a gamer so our choices are severly limited to start with. As soon as I saw this Gateway(my last was a gateway as well) I was in love. The price was $1699 which is what I expected so i bought it. At the register it came up as $1349. Clerk had no idea why adn we checked the numbers to make sure it was the same machine it was. I was really happy now. then got the 18 month no interest deal. So I log on to Best buy.com and see the proce has dropped to $1199 + a free game, I called up the best buy and they said they will match the ADD. So in my mind I just saved $500 cash plus get a free game. Now the machine runs spectacular, everything works. my games run so smooth is breathtaking. I normally game on my recliner with a laptop desk on my lap. I have to set the laptop about 4 inches off the left edge so i can use a mouse so with the headphone jack on the right front side it kinda messes with me a little, but I just have to adjust for it. no big deal. I dont care for Vista much, but it looks like I'm stuck with it. Great buy on a great product."

Great Workhorse02/18/2008
By kosmoskidfrom Ringgold, GA
What's great about it: 17" Screen, HDMI, eSATA, RAM, Processor What's not so great: Smudges easily
"I've had this laptop for a little over a day now, and I have put it to work with almost anything I can imagine. Zips along nicely through everything I've done so far. Games run great, and so do all the other things I bought for. Video editing, graphic design, and work. By far an amazing product. Vista runs along nicely. A little bit of a learning curve from XP, but still after an hour or so I was very capable of using it fully."

What's great about it: 17' inch screen, 3gb ram, video card, and everything else What's not so great: None, almost perfect except VIsta
"I usually build my own computers but I couldn't pass up this buy. It has everything you could want packed into an affordable laptop. The one downside is vista, so what i did is quad booted it with vista, Ubuntu, xp, and OS X Leopard. I Couldn't ask for more. Great display, 512 mb video card for great gaming, huge hdd, and plus it is made by gateway. They have awesome support. I recommend getting the 3 yr warranty also. DO NOT PASS THIS DEAL UP, there is nothing better for the price, I promise."

A truly solid gaming laptop02/13/2008
By forelisfrom Phoenix
What's great about it: 8800 gts, 3gb ram, 17" display, dvd burner ... (plenty of features) What's not so great: Glossy screen
"This laptop performs better than some mediocre gaming desktops I've seen purchased within the last 7 months -- for the same price. 3GB of ram is really the perfect amount for today's OSs. The 3D performance won't dissapoint. Easy score of 7000 in 3dmark06. The only serious drawback for me is the glossy screen -- it is very reflective. I'm not a big fan of glossy screens."

"Great video runs games like COD 4 with greatest of ease. Best bang for the buck, drqwbacks are cpu and slow ram speed but they are easilty upgradeable thru a port on the bottom of the notebook. Great battery life for all it does, a little on the heavy side so not the best traveler."

What's great about it: Everything What's not so great: Processor
"This ia the greatest buy for $1250 plus a free $50 pc game. I am a PC geek and have had over 100 laptops and desktops. This is the best deal I have got yet. It is not worth $1699 but is cleary worth $1250-$1400 around the timeframe of Jan or Feb 08. Gaming is great. Looks are great. And the OK CPU is upgradable. The video card and gaming is worth every penny."

Good for the money02/11/2008
By randymyze
What's great about it: 3GB Ram, Geforce 8800M What's not so great: Weak CPU, Slow ram
"The computer is a pretty good buy for the money, but has a few drawbacks. I bought the computer for work since it has an okay processor, 3GB ram, and a good video card. I thought it would be good for some entertainment as well (movies, games, etc.). The resources do allow it to run several applications smoothly. I can have several office apps, messenger, a web browser, several instances of visual studio, and some support apps all running at once and they run smoothly without crashes. I can run media content on great settings and games also run smoothly. So those are the good points. Here are the drawbacks I've experienced. It came with Home Premium which is okay, but for work I needed to upgrade to Vista Ultimate (for developer tools and bitlocker). - The board has a TPM (trusted platform module) but it isn't enabled by default and Gateway's custom BIOS doesn't have an option to enable it. So there is no bitlocker available in TPM mode with the mobo. - The customized Nvidia drivers that Gateway writes don't currently support DX10 which is a shame considering a selling point of the system is that it's graphic option is an Nvidia 8800M-GTS/512. - Gateway customer support is pretty good at handling default config problems, but have no real idea how to deal with anything non-standard. Overall not a bad machine for the price, but I think that next time I would stick with a more established enterprise/business solution and keep anything entertainment related to my desktop at home."

Happy with purchase02/11/2008
By LaptopReviewerfrom New York, NY
What's great about it: 8800 GTS video card, good bang for buck What's not so great: Low end CPU, placement of the DVD drive.
"This is a great gaming laptop as well as work laptop. Plays most games at the highest settings, if not medium. The only thing that I didn't like was the CPU however even with the low end CPU all games worked great.
Example Unreal 3 TF2 Lost Planet Crysis
One thing that did bother me is the placement of the DVD drive. I kept hitting the eject button when I moved the laptop around. Not a big issue, after about a week I got use to it. Build quality is excellent no flex."

Awesome System02/10/2008
By Anonymousfrom San Jose
What's great about it: Great Bright Screen, Super fast Graphics, Price of $1250 What's not so great: Not much, Maybe the CPU. But it is upgradable.
"Best bang for your buck on any level. Not really a laptop. It is really just a portable desktop. It is a monster in size and weight. That shouldnt bother most people since most people really dont travel with their laptops. I would say if you like to travel than this laptop may not be for you. Battery life is about 2 hours so it really needs to be plugged in all of the time. The Hi-Def display is killer. Games are played with ease and with all settings maxed out. I guess my biggests complaint would be that the nice high gloss finish shows every finger print. So if that is the worst thing I can say about it than I guess I was just looking for a fault. My friend just purchased a dell with about the same stats except a 8600 video card and he paid about 2 times the price and he was missing the video cam. He is a little up set with me because he feels ripped off. Awesome deal Best buy. Thanks for the early release of this product. Gateway is still only taking pre-orders and Best buy has it on the market."

What's great about it: Speedy performance and easy program setup What's not so great: Wasn't sure I liked Windows Vista at first
"I acctually do like WIndows Vista after just a few days of getting used to it. But about the computer, starting with the great professional look, it is definately an eye catcher. It is so easy to watch a DVD, just load and touch the DVD button on the top of the panel. You can even pause, stop, forward or reverse. Same goes with music CD's and I absolutly love the volume control right at my fingertips! The moniters graphic are outstanding. In comparison to my last gateway laptop it really doesn't weigh that much more and fits securely in my old laptop carrying bag. Some other great features are loading and fileing digital picts with ease. Also the wireless on/off switch is great for air travel and when you would just rather not pick up on someone elses wirelesss network while working on reports in the local WI-fI coffee shop. In all I would say this is the greatest computer I've ever owned."

Unreal Deal!!!!! A+++++++++02/10/2008
By Bunakfrom Fort Sill, OK
What's great about it: Excellent Components, easily upgradeable HD, CPU, Ram...great on budget What's not so great: None!
"Hello, I have searched high and low for the perfect gaming laptop and I have owned and returned just about every gaming laptop out there. (ask my wife) I came accross this laptop by reading a review online and luckily, I was able to score one for $1249 at Bestbuy w/a free PC game. You cannot find a deal like this with these specs anywhere. I paid $2700 and $2400 for my XPS and Alienware and returned them both because I felt guilty of spending that much money on a laptop. Not that I don't have the money, I just didn't have peace of mind with them. So, when I saw this one, I did a double take on it. I have had it for a few days and I already upgraded it to 4gb ram, t7700 Core 2 cpu, and added an extra 250 gb hd for raid config. I also swapped out the LCD screen from my other Gateway so now it has a resolution of 1920x1200 1080p hd quality! The cool thing is it took me about 30 minutes to do all of this because of the easy access to these components! Performance is superb and build quality also...I don't know why people can't run Crysis but, I can on max resolution and high quality with no problems. So after all my upgrades I spent about $1800 which still does not even come close to the expensive $2700 XPS laptop I returned...ha ha. Even if you can't upgrade any components, it is still an above average performer out of the box. Anyways, if you are on a budget, want a great gaming machine, look no further...this is the one...I love mine!!!! Thank you Bestbuy and Gateway for this great product. A+ P.S. One other thing I noticed is the material of the laptop is the exact same as the Dell XPS M1730. Gateway is back!!!"

Gateway P6831 FX
What's great about it: Graphics Card,CPU,Expansion Capabilities, 17" Widescreen Display What's not so great: has some unnecessary pre-installed software, would be nice to have the Vista Home Premium 64 bit OS pre-installed
"I purchased this notebook on 01/25/2008 from my local Best Buy. I am very pleased with this notebook computer. I was looking for a nice desktop replacement that I am able to play my games on as well as do business related activities. I am very pleased with the performance of this computer. The Nvidia 8800M graphic card performs extremely well for gaming. Even though the processor is a 1.67 Ghz it performs very well combined with the 3GB of RAM. This laptop has a very spacious 250GB hard drive and an empty bay to add an additional hard drive and utilize the RAID capabilities of this unit.I have been able to play Halo 2, Bioshock,F.E.A.R,Crysis as well as the Half-life 2 series of games at maximum detail settings flawlessly. The only thing that I did do with my notebook is update the operating system to Vista 64 bit I feel that the system performs better with it vs. the 32 bit edition.I really like the quality of this notebook as well as the glossy finish. It does pick up fingerprints very easy but nothing that cant be wipe away with a soft cloth and mild cleaning solution.I was really taken with the orange/copper accent that was built into the case of the unit as well. this is my first gaming notebook purchase and after narrowing my decision down to 3 choices this is the one I picked. I feel that this was a very good decision and I am very happy to be an owner of one of these Gateway P6831 FX notebook computers."

Awsome laptop02/08/2008

What's great about it: Screen size, CPU power, Graphics card, laptop styling What's not so great: Man, this thing is heavy!
"Tried to buy this a week ago but they were sold out. So I got a rain check and boy am I glad I did! The very next day the price jumped up $450. I got a call when the laptop arrived and they honored the sale price when I payed for it, about $1330 after tax. Personally I like Vista, it looks and runs great. You just have to read a couple of tweak guides and configure it the way you want. I ran 3D Mark 2006 on it and got a score of 7000, which is pretty good. I could spend a few hours tweaking this computer some more to achieve a higher score but for me that's just to much of a hassle. I loaded Crysis on it and it ran beautifully with all the settings on high. Coming from an IBM 14" Thinkpad T30 to this laptop is an awesome experience! The built in wireless Internet is a bonus because on my old laptop I had Sprint wireless card plugged into it. The connection I am getting now with this Gateway is so much more faster. The HDMI out is another bonus. Playing Crysis on my Sony 42" wide screen really immerses you into the game. I could go on and on but you get the idea. Buy this laptop and you won't be sorry."

What's great about it: Bright screen, will not over heat. What's not so great: battery life, heavier than other laptops.
"This is a portable desktop. With larger than other 17" laptops, the screen is very visible and the games are more enjoyable to play that the competions laptops. I bought this laptop when it was on sale at for $1,249.99 and now they are $1,699.00. It has much more than the XPS for the price. This is my first gaming laptop and I wouldn't trade it for any others. Slick design and easily readable keyboards are what makes this computer a plus. No loud noise. It's compatible for all internet cards and the speed seems faster when connected. These are no longer on sale for the price I paid for, but it's is still worth buying for $1,700. Highly recommended for the students and the parents who do not want to buy their kids laptops such as Dell XPS's."

Stellar value/Stellar gaming laptop02/07/2008
By arossfrom Aurora, Colorado
What's great about it: Large widescreen display, runs every game out there What's not so great: Battery life
"This is one of the best values I have gotten in ages. If you are looking for an excellent Gaming/Multimedia laptop at a friendly price, this is it. The system comes installed with Vista Premium. Setup is super easy. I was online in less than 10 minutes. Sports a gorgeous 17.5" widescreen LCD display, built in Camera, Wi-Fi compatibility, BlueTooth compatibility & HDMI ports. 3 USB ports, a slot for pretty much all flash/memory card media and a multimedia backlit display panel. The graphics card smokes! It's an NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS with 512MB RAM & full DirectX10 support. Throw in the Core 2 Duo Processor & 3GB of system memory, & you have everything you need for all your Multimedia/Gaming needs. It has a full size keyboard & a CD/DVD R+W & burner. This laptop will run Crysis & Gears of War at all High settings & will run games such as Bioshock, CoD4, Hellgate London, & the Witcher at all max settings. The only downside seems to be battery life, but this is common with most laptops. You can expect 3 hours on a single charge but much less if you are gaming. All in all this is a fantastic value. A comparable Alienware gaming laptop would run you around $2100.00 & if you were on of the lucky ones like myself to get this rig when it was on sale foor $1250.000, then you know what a fantastic value this really is. Even at the full asking price of $1599.00, you're still getting a great deal. Highly recommended!"

What a buy!02/07/2008
By JBJMNfrom Lakeville, MN
What's great about it: Large Display, Ultra Fast, Flexible Design What's not so great: DVD Keyboard Controls, Not Enough USB Ports
"We are anything BUT gamers in our household. Wanted to upgrade laptop from Thinkpad T23 to newer product with larger display, more memory, and faster response times. The primary purpose of our laptop is for internet use, photo management/editing, music, and a moderate level of business-related use. Purchased this Gateway for the 17" screen, 3GB of RAM, and 250GB hard drive. I didn't even realize until I brought it home that it had an extra slot for an additional hard drive, which is going to be great as we continue to use hard drive space with our family photo collection and music downloads. This laptop was a GREAT purchase for our household. Haven't had a single issue with freezing or time delays, despite all the bad things you read about Windows Vista. Had to cleanup a few pieces of 'junk' software on the machine, but not nearly as much as the HP that my parents bought last month. Also took a bit of time to customize Vista to avoid all the 'permission required' pop-ups (turn OFF user account control). My only complaints are that the 'touch' buttons for DVD control take more than a simple touch to activate. Also can't yet figure out how to turn off the mouse touchpad, as we use an external mouse 100% of the time. Finally, I'm a little surprised that there's only 3 USB ports...seems a little light given the # of USB peripherals & add-ons that most avid computer users demand nowadays (easily fixed with a portable hub, I suppose). We ended up purchasing on sale from Bestbuy.com at $1249, which is a steal compared to the current price at nearly $1700...so might be worth your while to wait until the price comes back down. But even at that price, I can assure you that it IS a great laptop and has met or exceeded every expectation I've had."
