Incredible!   02/06/2008
By Anonymous from Milwaukee

What's great about it: Everything
What's not so great: Vista (spanish for: useless)

"This is one of the best laptops out there if you can get it for 1249 like I did. Incredible graphics (512 dedicated NVidia!) 3GB Ram!, N compatable wireless, Centrino mobile, bluetooth, DVDR, labelflash, HDMI output, everthing rocks on this sweet machine, well except for vista which is a totally worthless O/S other than that the processor could be a bit faster but for the price you cant beat this computer. I would watch for sales and save yourself the 300 to 400 dollars at its regular price because for nearly $1700 you can find similar laptops with faster processors and more features I.E. Blue-Ray and other features. For $ 1249 you cant beat this"

Want a HIGH powered laptop? Get this!   02/06/2008
By powergamer from lake forest, ca

What's great about it: Geforce 8800M GTS 512mb DDR3(discrete), solidly built, great paint job, not as heavy as comparable laptops
What's not so great: slow cpu only 1.6ghz core2 duo..thats it really!

"I had been studying this new laptop that best buy carried since last week when I saw COD4(call of duty) being demonstrated on this huge 27" widescreen lcd. I didn't know it was a laptop that it was connected to! Wow that day didn't get a chance to check it out because I was looking for something else in best buy. So a week later I decided to research about this particular notebook and man am I glad I did.

One big thing about this is it doesn't require deep pockets at only $1300 which most of you got it for with a free game that is a steal! I had to pay more because it is in so high deman and being out of stock at most stores. Even though I paid $1699 I don't really regret it. The only thing that appears to make it lag is the processor, but I have put an order for the t7500 2.2ghz core2 duo processor. Using that higher performance chip I'm now in the same class as Dell XPS' and Alienware. The 8800GTS is the most powerful graphic chip available on a notebook except the 8800GTX which Alienware has I believe? Just this one graphic chip can literally take out or compete against the SLI dual chips as long as they aren't 8800gts' SLI'ed.

Take my word for it and get this laptop whether its priced higher then usual because this kind of deal won't last forever. I bet it will go higher and higher! I even purchased a processor to replace the bottleneck one in this easily raising the price to almost $2,000+ But that's me and unless you're into gaming like me you don't really need to upgrade the processor it does everything and anything a normal computer can do =)

I got Lucky   02/04/2008
By jaylind from Aurora, Colorado

What's great about it: Price $1249.99 battery life, HDMI out, etc.
What's not so great: Too smooth finish (fingerprints),#'s across the top hard to read.

"I just got this laptop, it replaced my HP Pav. ZD8000.
Bestbuy had it on sale for $1249.99 (not $1349.99) and had none left in the area. I was going to buy the FX desktop, but the wife asked the manager to sell us the floor model. They said yes and we walked out with this bad boy. The same night the wife looked it up and it was showing for $1699.99 I thought there was a mistake someplace, but I called Bestbuy and they said it was a sale price and not they are on backorder for 2 weeks at the higher price.
I have loaded Adobe CS3, Crysis demo, Battlefield (all versions from ea), Oblivion, google earth, DVDFAB Plat., and much more. All run great no lag or problems. I don't like the upper section for multimedia and sound. the buttons are similar to the RAZr phones. The volume button did get stuck last night (volume kept rising on it's own). It magicly fixed itself overnight. HDMI out worked great I was playing oblivian and just pluged it in and off we went. The screen is decent my HP was better. I would wish for more USB ports. And I heard the video card was upgradeable for the future. Something my HP was suppose to do but doesn't The numbers across the top was subdued and hard to read in lower light. I would also like to see a laptop with illuminated keys. This is my initial eval. I will post again in a month with updates.

What's great about it: good looking, fast, graphics card a+, price is great
What's not so great: smudges, too good looking to touch it

"I saw this the first weekend it came out, and had to buy it immediately!

I was able to get it for 1350, but it seems gateway realized that they can charge more for it!

Call of Duty 4 look great...

Went from 2 year old gateway to this one, I am satisfied with the performance of gateway.

Overall, an AWESOME laptop that is worth the $ because it is one of the best things out there right now!

Get this computer and realize that GATEWAY is moving up the PC ladder.

Amazing laptop for enthusiasts   02/03/2008
By Satsugai from Florida

What's great about it: Keyboard, GPU, Style, Upgradability!!
What's not so great: Screen resolution could be higher

"This is the fourth laptop I've purchased, and am very happy with it. It is a gamer/enthusiasts dream laptop. The 8800m GTS is top notch. The laptop runs near silently with the stock CPU, since the cpu cooler is built to handle 2.4Ghz CPUs.
I had a Hitachi 7k200 200 GB 2.5" drive laying around, and purchased a second one from best buy. In RAID they perform as well as my 2x 74G Raptor RAID0 array in my desktop. If I did not have the single 7k200 laying around, I would have bought one of the WD Sata Scorpio 250GB drives from best buy and installed that for a 500GB raid0 array.
The Socket P 1.66Ghz Core 2 Duo CPU is easily replaceable, allowing for future upgrades to even the Core 2 Extreme Socket P CPUs.
The Laptop overall is an excellent buy at any price, and has plenty of slack for futureproofing. Anyone who is interested in picking up a gaming laptop for a good price should consider this laptop as a top tier price/performance buy.

I love it   02/02/2008
By PhantomBestBuyReviewer from NH

What's great about it: Sleek, stylish, very nice keyboard, great video card, 3 gb memory, 250 gigs of hard drive
What's not so great: Processor could be faster, screen seems a little pale, movies look a little grainy to me

"This is my third lap top. I've owned a Compaq and a ACER before this. I would say that hands down this is the best laptop I've ever had. My experience is that laptops are skimmped on in parts or have a cheap feel or look bad. This one has none of thoes qualities. I like the orange and black look. The keyboard doesn't feel compressed and I do like the full number pad. I know that some people think that the 17 inch screen laptops are heavy but I don't feel like 8 pounds is out of my lifting range. So far I'm very happy with the computer. I do think the screen color seems a little muted compared to other laptops. I know this laptop is a little more expensive than most but you get what you pay for. One last thing, maybe it's because of bad luck but my other laptops died or ended up with broken pieces at some point in there lives. To me the warranty is worth it. Portable electronics = short life spans."

By tjsanda

What's great about it: GPU, 2 hard drive bays
What's not so great: wimpy 1.66 processor

"I bought this right when it came out for $1350. Now it's on sale for $1250 and the pricematch is only good for 14 days. Oh well, this is still an awesome machine!
I scored 7023 3d marks right out of the box. Now I have upgraded to the T7700 processor and it scores 8316. Crysis auto set on medium graphics before upgrading and high settings after.
Also, the memory speed doubled after the upgrade. Now I just need to install 2nd hard drive for the raid feature and I will be happy.

Amazing!!!   02/01/2008
By iz360

"This laptop is a new step towards upgradeable laptops. Thats right. You can purchase a new processor from newegg/tigerdirect and install it in under 5 minutes. All it takes is a phillips head screwdriver to remove the panel on the underside of the laptop.
So that means in 2 years when you think this laptop is behind. Go ahead and spend 100 bucks and put in a better processor.
The graphics card is top of the line for the Geforce 8 series so realistically you should be able to play games for 2 more series or around 3 more years.
I am very happy that i got this thing. I bought the 3 year warranty to cover it too and i cant wait to start using this thing. Just waiting right now for it to fully charge for the first time.
I cant believe it's so cheap. You can spend another $250 and upgrade the processor to a 7500 and youve got a computer that compares to an Alienware for less than half the price. Thank you Gateway

Best price / performance by far!   01/30/2008
By binro from Miller Place, NY

What's great about it: Price, Graphics Card, 2nd hard drive bay, bluetooth, upgrade potential
What's not so great: lower end CPU bottlenecks GPU

"I was doing research for a good laptop for about 3 weeks. I had a limited budget, so my goal was to get the most bang for the buck. I wanted a laptop that would be a good workhorse for a decent period of time.

I came accross a review of this laptop on an excellent website dedicated to the laptop user community and became quite interested.

Here is a laptop that has a host of features that makes it quite future proof. The laptop can accept a CPU upgrade to the new Penyrn CPUs, it has asecond internal hard drive bay with a raid controler, and it has the 2nd from the top video card currently available to laptop users. This GPU is so powerful it comes close to outperfoirmig most of the recent SLI dual GPU rigs from such boutique laptop brands like alienware.

I dont know what the other guy who reported 3dMarks was doing, my guess is that he didnt change the battery settiings to High performance, because you will get much higher 3dMarks then he reported. I ran the benchmark after I changed the laptop performance to High, and received a 3dMark of 7011. Yes 7011 out of the box! I has been reported to hit well over 8000 3dmarks when people changed out the CPU to a more substantial choice.

The cooling of this laptop is also exceptional. The GPU never gets over 65C under the most extreem gaming conditions.

Overall you cant do any better for this price point. It is impossible to find the same feature set for this price point. Gateway could easily charge another 300.00 for this machine and people would be more then happy to buy it. There is alot of good press on this laptop and it won some decent allocades at the CES show so get it fast before its to late and its either out of stock or Gateway came to it senses and realised that it could make 300.00 more per unit.

What's great about it: 8800M GTS Mobile Graphics card, 3Gb Ram, eSATA, 2 HDD Bays, Nice paint job, Battery Life.
What's not so great: Finger prints show up everywhere!! Tinny Speakers, Processor could be faster.

"This is probably one of the best laptops you could find in it's price range. The Gateway P-6831FX has a screaming graphics card, topped by only the 8800m GTX model. The most amount of ram that Vista will recognize 3 Gigabytes having only 2 DIMMs. A Decent 1.66 GHz Dual Core which could be a little faster making it a 1.8 GHz or even a 2.0 GHz. Given that this is a Gateway laptop it is awesome for gaming. When I ran 3DMark 06 with everything maxed, I still got about 4862 marks which is 42% better then everyone else did. That is very good for sub $1,500 gaming laptop verses gaming desktops. There is probably no better buy then this one. All that I have to say is that if you are a huge gamer and you want to bring that experience on the road with you and not pay $3,000 then this is the laptop for you. The Battery life on this guy is amazing. Sitting there doing nothing with everything set to it's lowest settings I still got almost 5 hours of battery life. Watching a movie on the hard drive I got about 4 hours of battery life. Playing games I still got about 2 hours of Battery Life!!!! Playing games is not really recommended with this laptop unplugged but it still works like a champ.

Some of the gripes that I have with this laptop are minor and really only cosmetic. The case of this laptop is beautifully painted, that just means that your finger prints will show up everywhere. The shift key on the right side of the FULL KEYBOARD is smaller then normal. The Laptop only has 3 USB ports, I just went out and bought a USB hub so problem solved. The speakers compared to the Toshiba's with the Harman/Kardon stereo with built-in sub-woofers are very Tinny. There is only 1 output for speakers anyway so you can't hook this up to anything but normal desktop speakers to make it sound better. The touch buttons at the top near the power button are not really touch, you have to press on them with a little bit of force. The volume control next to them is touch sensitive however so all you have to do is roll your finger across it. The wireless switch can be hit accidentally creating havoc for online gamers playing wireless. The battery sticks out a good half-an-inch so in some notebook/laptop bags or cases you have to take the battery out of the machine. Take in account the actual dimensions of the laptop because if you buy a case that says "Fits most 17in Laptops" it probably won't fit.

Other then those few gripes which again are minor and cosmetic this is a great laptop for it's price.

Affordable gaming notebook   01/28/2008
By Vashar

What's great about it: Value, Gaming Performance, Aesthetics, Upgradeability
What's not so great: Keyboard Layout, Pre-installed Bloatware

"I bought this notebook instead of upgrading my 2 year old $1000 gaming desktop. Upgrading it would've cost over $500 for a new motherboard, CPU, and video card (that's the least of what I buy when I go upgrade shopping). I was attracted by the video chipset and the price mainly.

I like to play my games in as high quality as possible, but then later opt for performance when I need to play my best... this notebook as allowed me the pleasure of enjoying my games with luscious high quality video. Audio is a little lacking due to sub-par laptop speakers, but with generic ear buds, it sounds much better. The display is nice, with a higher than advertised resolution (1440x900), but it's viewing angle is very limited - I find myself adjusting the screen angle 2-3 times before settling down and again when I adjust myself in my seat or bed.

Vista is a nice addition. I'm no longer afraid of Vista after hearing all the bad word-of-mouth comments about it. After some tweaking, using BlackViper's guide (google it), it works in an acceptable manner with more bells and whistles. Gateway includes a recovery disk which you can use with vLite to install a lighter version of Vista if you are a more experienced power user who wants more control over your computer.

My experience has been, for the most part, pleasurable. My biggest beef with it has been the near useless Fn key taking left Ctrl key's spot and contributing to carpal tunnel syndrome. I'm about to tape them both down with a couple toothpicks. Also, the size of it is a bit of a problem - it won't fit my laptop backpack which is rated up to 17" and is 19.5 x 13.5 x 8. My other minor beef with it being with Vista not being able to look into XP computers on my network, a daily error prompt about a Host Service being stopped and terminated, and the nature of Vista being extremely annoying before tweaking.

What's great about it: 17" screen, large HD, 3Gigs of memory, outstanding video card
What's not so great: The color, battery hangs out the back about an inch, a little on the heavy side

"I was looking for a gaming laptop that I could also do business work on. This laptop fit the bill. Outstanding graphics. Will run any game on the market. Keyboard has a great layout. If you are a gamer this is the laptop for you, and at a great price you can not beat it."

Non Gamer buys Gamer Computer!   01/21/2008
By pixiejenna

What's great about it: 17'' screen, numeric keypad,
What's not so great: not many.

"I was looking for a laptop for a while and I was going to get a older model Sony Viao until I found this gem! My sister-in-law had a Gateway and I used i for a weekend when I was visiting and liked it enough to check Gateway out and this beauty! With the harddrive and memory at this price it can't be beat. I was nervous about seeing the screen on battery only due to past experiences on 17'' laptops on battery power only, and my fears were absolved! The screen was easy to see on battery power only, no change what so ever the screen was crystal clear. I almost bought the red model they have for less money but I really like the 17'' screen plus the numerical keypad is great if your in accounting one less thing for you to lug around!

The only cons for me are really cosmetic really I don't really like the black/orange color combination, I call it my halloween laptop. I would also like the outside to be aluminum/metal instead of plastic. Also a extra usb port or two would be nice. You can't see it in the pictures but the battery pack sticks out in the back about a inch.

Best buy indeed   01/20/2008
By redtiger777 from Missouri

What's great about it: Amazing video performance
What's not so great: CPU restricted/left side of laptop gets hot next to vent

"You really can't beat this price for a laptop with an Nvidia 8800 video card. Will run all current games with all details on. Played thru the Crysis demo with high detail. Only occassional framerate dips...but definitely playable.

The pros don't stop with the amazing video card though. Screen is beautiful. I upgraded from a Sony VAIO and found the Gateway screen to be much better (hard to believe). Also, note that the tactile feedback of the keyboard is first class. Full keyboard (with number pad) is rare for a gaming laptop.

As previous reviewers have mentioned, CPU is easily upgradeable making this already great buy to be even more future-proof.

Do not hesitate. Once our local Best Buy put this laptop on display, they sold out within a couple days. I cannot recommend this laptop highly enough! Gateway is obviously back in the game!

Great Gaming Laptop, Great Buy   01/20/2008
By Wyld1 from Michigan

What's great about it: Nvidia Card, 3gb ram, Beautiful 17' screen, Everything Else
What's not so great: Gateway won't be making XP drivers for some Components (sound ones I believe)

"Great System, Only real draw backs:
1) it only has 3 usb ports, but we can live with 3.
.
2) at the moment we're stuck with Vista, XP roll back will be possible at some point, but we're missing some drivers at the moment. I'm sure someone will piece them together soon. However gateway won't be providing them. Maxium PC had some great articles on Living with Vista, you can find them online.(free)
.
3) The CPU is on the small end of what is available at the moment. However, IT IS UPGRADEABLE.. search notebookreview.com for details. (likely doing this would void your warrenty though) Also you be able to put in a new Penryn CPU when they are release =)
at the moment the current CPU is enough for anything most people will want to do. also once you have a new CPU the system will recognise more Ram so you can go to 4GB..
.
Really this is everything i needed and more, Screen looks great,
mouse pad is off centre but what gamer uses a mouse pad?
battery life for non gaming purposes looks to be around an hour and 40 mins..
Graphic System stays cool around 45-50 celcius for non gaming, 60ish during gaming,
up to 85 is considered fine, has been tested up to 145 celcuis with no ill effects..
Gateway online support is solid..
All around a great buy at a price you won't be able to beat, similar alienware systems are going for $2000+

Seriously... a Best Buy   01/19/2008
By Csuave from Edison, NJ

What's great about it: Great price for such a powerful video card (nvidia 8800 gts 512) and easy access to the CPU makes it easy to change.
What's not so great: The CPU is the only bottleneck. But, it can be replaced very easily.

"Seriously... this is a great buy for that video card. It runs everything very well with the only exception being Crysis. But, it can even run Crysis fairly well even with this weak CPU.

The processor is easy to change and Gateway still honors the warranty if you decide to. The laptop also has a great cooling system. The higher end models run the Intel Core 2 Extremes so you should not worry about cooling since the laptop will pretty much be ready for the challenge.

Really an unbelievable buy. I also own an Alienware Area 51m-7700 and I currently prefer this computer for gaming even on the older games. The computer is much quieter than I had expected especially when compared to other gaming laptops (i.e. Alienware).

Don't reconsider... this really is the best buy.

P.S. - The screen resolution is actually 1440x900 (there was a typo on the site... I own it I know) and the computer can be upgraded to 4gb of RAM.

What's great about it: Graphics=Nvidia 8800GTS w/ 512Mem, 17in screen, looks Great, 3gig Meg extended Mem
What's not so great: CPU Not top notch but doe's a gret job. Mouse finger pad off center

"Got this gateway 3 days ago and I've put it through the test. Had it on for hrs, watched a movie.. (Good) Took it to work, loaded software on it.. No problems..
Now the Graphics test.
Call of duty 4 on line and off. Excellent (Wireless)
Game Recomended: Pentium 4 2.4GHZ w graphics NVidia 6600 or Higher. Did lock up once, but no problems since then.
Quake Wars Enemy territory on and off line (Excellent) Wireless.
Game Recommened: 3GHZ for Vista, NVidia 5700
Both where minimum system requirement recommendations.
World of Warcraft.. (Excellent)
Test where done at High Video settings.
Using a wireless Keyboard and mouse combo 2.4Mhz.. Worked great also!
The wireless (WiFi) does a great job.
I've installed my Office 2007, works fine.
I did try to install Nero express, didn't like it. PowerDVD was not recommended either. I watched the movie on Microsofts Media.. worked fine.
Other than that..GREAT LAPTOP.
Before I found this thing, I had gone to the web and shopped there for a gaming laptop and was winding up with 1800 to 2500 hundred Dollars. I choose to check this out because of the Nvidia 8800 GTS... I'm glad I did.
I'll be looking for something to take the Graphics and CPU to the next level..So Far I haven't found anything asking for more than Quake or Call of duty 4 modern warfare... If you want a gaming system and a worker and don't want to spend the bucks... This Laptops it.
I'm putting this against my Desktop I built..
Desktop..Asus Motherboard 1066FBS, Cant remember the Model, cost $200 M9N32 something deluxe????
CPU: AMD 5600
Graphics Card: Nvidia Geforce 8800GTX
Ram 2 Gig
2 SATA Hard drives 250GigX2 w/ RAID 0 settings
22 Flat screen.. ACER
1 THING!! READ THE SMALL OPERATORS MANUAL, this is my first laptop so I don't know if this is the norm. Make your backup disk for your drivers. This Gateway only comes with OS Vista. There's a program installed to make them.. Takes 4 cd's to make.. each about 702 mega bites used. These disk will contain the drivers for the Gateway Laptop.
