I have ATT DSL and a Mac. I was expecting to spend an entire afternoon replacing our old, always terrible functioning 2Wire modem/router.
And I didn't have to because this modem/router was super easy to set up. We couldn't even get the 2Wire signal in the bedroom -- 30 feet away! But the Actiontec always has a strong signal and even seems faster than the old modem/router.
Fast to set up. Easy user interface. Good range.

Of all the hardware that I've add to my computer, this modem was the easiest. Just follow the instructions and you're up and running in a few minutes.
Reliability has been excellent and connection to the internet quicker.
What more can you ask for.

I bought this ActionTec gateway, because my previous gateway was an Actiontec (GT704), and it performed well and lasted a long time. I also figured that another ActionTec gateway would be easy to set up for my Frontier (formerly Verizon) DSL account, as the last one was easy to set up.
The hardware seems to be well-designed well-made, and it is performing great. Measured DSL speeds are about 10% higher than they were before, and wireless networking has a greater range and is noticeably faster.
However, even though ActionTec claims that this gateway automatically installs on Verizon DSL networks (which this still is, even though the name has changed to Frontier), it took me several hours to get it installed, and only after lengthy calls to both ActionTec and Frontier technical support. When I tried to use the automatic set up option, the set up program decided that I am on a PPP network, when my DSL is provided via DHCP. Even when I manually matched all settings with my previous modem, I could not get a connection. The ActionTec technician that I spoke with was very helpful, but in the end told me that I needed to get settings information from Frontier. It took close to an hour with a Frontier technician to finally get up and running.
One of the main purposes for my purchasing this new gateway was to implement more modern Quality of Service (QoS) settings for my network. This gateway indeed has those settings, but the manual is next-to-worthless in explaining how to implement them. It assumes that I know all of the acronyms and what they all mean. I'd even be OK if there was additional info on an ActionTec web page, but there doesn't appear to be any.
Perhaps this gateway installs more easily on other DSL lines, but it was a struggle for me.
What's great about it: Fast, great wireless range, well-made
What's not so great: Hard to set up, skimpy manual

Purchased this on strength of reviews, and wasn't disappointed. Only 10 min. to set-up; very fast w/strong signal. Really should be AT&T's default modem/router - it's that good.

After upgrading my AT&T DSL service to 6.0 Mbps, I received a 2Wire modem to replace an older modem, about a week ago. As described in many other reviews, the 2Wire kept dropping the DSL connection, every few hours, even though the line quality (attenuation and margin) numbers were very good. I read many reviews over the past week about the Actiontec GT724WGR being easy to install, as well as it being an improvement over the 2Wire modem. The reviews were accurate. It took about 10 minutes from opening the box to being online with this modem. Excellent speed and no dropouts in the first 24 hours. If I dont update this review, you can assume that I have had no issues with the modem.
What's great about it: Installation was very easy. DSL connection and speed are excellent. Wireless range is great.
What's not so great: Nothing.

The original 4-year old Westell DSL modem provided by Verizon also worked with AT&T but every so often I would have to "reset" everything as a connection issue would arise.
What led me to buy this modem was the Westell was malfunctioning where even after resetting back to default it would not allow me to adjust or enter the user passwords.
This modem worked straight out of the box. The initial setup involved connecting the modem, opening up the browser's web page, letting it detect the ISP (mine being AT&T), entering the username and password, and then adjusting the wireless and security.
What's great about it: initial easy setup
What's not so great: a bit pricey, recommend adding the foot attachment as it does get hot.

I bought the router to replace my 2wire provided by at&t, at first I was worried since is not supported by them (at&t) and any call asking them how to set-up your actiontec could result in $100.00/hr consultation.
I decided to roll the dice and take my chances, and I am glad to tell you that I was not disappointed. The set-up takes only about 10 minutes, all you need is your user name and password from at&t.
It's faster, it's on all the time, big difference if you compare with the 2wire. Others companies should take the example from actiontec.
So, do yourself a favor, and get it, you will not be disappointed.
What's great about it: Easy to set up.

After having fought for 3 days with a new D-Link DSL Modem router I bought this Actiontec unit. Within 20 minutes of starting the setup process it was up and running with my wireless settings configured and everything. It detected my ISP (Bellsouth) and after inputting the password and info it set everything up perfectly. An extremely easy set up and the router is working great. Also it is not running nearly as hot as my my old Netgear unit.
What's great about it: Ease of installation
What's not so great: A bit pricey

I just threw away my 3rd 2wire modem router... truly junk. I was concerned about finding a modem router that would work with my ATT DSL service. I opened up the quick start manual and it had directions for all the existing internet carriers including ATT and Verizon customers. I was literally up and running in less than 5 minutes. I have a good strong consistent signal and I couldn't be happier.
What's great about it: Easy Cheesy Setup... WOOOoooOOOO HOOOOOOOoooOO
What's not so great: Maybe a little spendy

My 2wire stopped working on me. I went in and find this modem/wireless router on sale and figured why not, even though it's not a brand I recognized. Easy to set-up and put to use, but then again, what modem isn't.
Worked fine on the computer, but won't stay connected to my xbox live account, and it's hard wired straight to the xbox. Thought it was related to my ISP, but had the same problem the next morning. This is going back to the store today.

This DSL router maintains a log of all of your web activity which can be viewed by anyone that can access the device (even remotely if not protected from that). They provided no means to disable or erase the logging.
Selecting "Private Browsing" in firefox will avoid a log from being maintained by your computer, but it will still be logged in your router.
This is not explained anywhere in their literature or user manuals and most users are probably not even aware it exists. It is viewable by logging in to the router, going to utilities, and selecting web activity log.
If you value your privacy, DO NOT purchase this device!
What's not so great: The router logs all of your web activity and Actiontec did not provide a means to disable or erase it.

This replaced a Cisco router and Westell modem (AT@T). I was never able to get highest download speed with this configuration. After installing the Actiontec, (which was a breeze, no need for cust. service), download speed was 6mbps. (previously it hovered between 3mbps and 4mbps only). Signal strength is fantastic compared to the Cisco router. Great buy, highly recommended.
