What's great about it: everything What's not so great: nothing
"I felt that this technology doesn't deserve $150, maybe no more than $120. Great item, I actually increased my wireless signal's speed over my older wireless N model! Never go wrong with Netgear. Now if only the dual-band came in this design."

What's great about it: Easy to set up, can load custom firmware What's not so great: Older revision has the same model number, not good at all.
"The reason for the mixed reviews on this router is because there are actually two totally different versions of it. The original is the one in the picture, with the really ugly blue LED lightshow on top. The V2 model is smaller, has a completley different chipset, and is actually a good router.
Take time, and look at the box, if it mentions a pre-2009 date on it ( I think it was 2007) don't get it. If there are 2 different box sizes on the shelf, get the smaller one."

"I just wish we could find a good replacement wireless N for our outdated broke transmitters. Between this and the linksys wt160, I'd pass. But if it wasn't for it just stop working I do believe this has better transmission than the linksys wt160."

What's great about it: Reasonably easy setup, solid reliability What's not so great: Obnoxious blue LEDs on top (but these can be turned off), somewhat pricey, wish it was dual band
"This router replaced a D-Link DIR 655 N-router, whose power supply died (actually not even the original PS - was an eBay replacement that probably wasn't very good quality).
I decided to replace the router rather than trying to find another cheap power supply.
The Netgear router set up fairly quickly (manual setup), and I have my PS3 and TivoHD plugged into ethernet ports. Getting the wireless working took a bit of time - I couldn't get the connections to work until I changed the wireless setting to "up to 145Mbps". I initially set it to "up to 300Mbps", but this apparently was an issue for our Macs. The documentation isn't very clear on what that setting does...
We have 3 Mac laptops in the house - 2 of them with N-wireless, and an older one in the basement with G-wireless. All connect without any problems.
Current uptime for the WLAN (read from the router status page) is 45+ days - where I would have to restart the DLink every couple weeks.
One more thing about those blinking LED's on the top... I thought that the button on the back of the router was a power switch, but it actually turns the LED array on top of the router on/off. These LEDs are supposed to indicate which internal antennas are being used, but they are a distraction under in my entertainment center."

What's great about it: It was very easy to install and set up What's not so great: I can't figure out how to go back and change some settings that were "placeholders" during the initial installation
"Instruction were simple and easy to follow. I was able to add another computer with no difficulty. There seems to be no degradation to speed. My one complaint is that after the fact I wanted to set up separate restrictions for web use for myself and my son, and could not figure out how to do it. Did not read the manual, but I did read online help."

What's great about it: nothing What's not so great: dropped connection every few minutes
"I bought this wireless router based on a glowing reveiew published by a well-respected computer product website, but I should have paid attention to the multiple reviews of this router on bestbuy.com which mentioned repeated dropped internet connections. Within the first half hour of use, I had to reboot the router three times to re-establish a wireless connection between it and my brand new high-performance laptop. I returned the router for a refund."

What's great about it: Great Range, Easy Set Up What's not so great: Price
"I recently purchased a linksys WRT160N as recommended by my IT guy at work. I spent 6 hours trying to get a wireless signal to my laptop. The signal would come and go. Had to constantly reset it. I took it back and exchanged for this Netgear. I had it connected and working in less than an hour. I even had to set is up manually because I had read that the CD didn't support Vista 64bit. I didn't even bother inserting the CD. The router setup site is simple and easy. I took my laptop up the 3rd level of my house (the router is in the basement). I had 4 bars of signal!!! The unit has been hooked up and running for 4 days with no problems, no dropped signals, and no resets. I would highly recommend especially if you have a large house and need the extra range."

What's great about it: It worked right out of the box, where the Linksys didnt What's not so great: Nothing yet
"I went wireless to keep the kids happy when they return home from college, and want to work online anywhere in the house. Purchased a Linksys WRT 160N at first, what a mistake. I had issues with conectivity constantly. For me, If you need a call to a help line for something as simple as a wireless router, the manufacturer didnt do their job right. Returned it for the Netgear WRN 3500. It works perfectly. Install was a breeze. The wireless connections were made quick and easy. Connection to the network is fast and reliable. Strength of signal is very good throught the house. There is no bloatware that shouldnt be needed, if the router does its job of keeping your network secure. If you need a wireless router, try this one, it worked for me."

What's great about it: All wired ports are gigabit; eight antennas for maximum range, on-end design for performance What's not so great: Nothing
"This router replaced a four-year-old WRT54GS (nothing wrong with the GS except poor wireless range). Despite having to configure via the browser (Setup Wizard does not support Windows 7 x64), the network was completely back up and running inside of thirty minutes. Now I have no excuse for staying with wireless-G (the only wireless device is an XP-based laptop)."

What's great about it: Stable, reliable, easy to use config page What's not so great: CD does not support 64bit OS, kind of pricey
"I replaced a Linksys WRT310N with this device because the Linksys would reduce my speed from Comcast over the course of a day. I would reboot the Linksys device and 12 hours later my speed would go from 30Mbit to 12Mbit and then in 24 hours I would have a speed of 1-3Mbit.
So far I'm very impressed with the Netgear product even though the CD does not work on 64bit OS's. Take a look at the back of the router for the default login information and URL, since it's printed on the device make sure to change your password. ;)"

What's great about it: Very easy to set up. The security features that are pre-installed are hard to beat. What's not so great: The only thing that brings my opinion down about this router is the max speed it can generate.
"For a Gigabit "N" router I expected to at least be able to pull 500+ MPBS, and would like it to get a solid 1,000, like it is very capable of doing. The problem is that they maxed its speed (Wired or not) at 300 MPBS. I don't really have any use for anything over 150 anymore, but I'm sure when I upgrade my Home Theater system and build my new desktop I might want to go with something that gets at least 600. I could pay $50.00 and buy the D-Link version of this and that has some outrageous speed that I think I would enjoy. Not that you, or anyone else for that matter would be able to tell the difference unless they tried. Other than that, it is an excellent piece of Wire-less technology that is ever so simple to set up and run. I've always trusted Net Gear because of its ease, and security, and in those two aspects this product cannot be beat."

What's great about it: looks good What's not so great: router resets itself when I try to access it.
"Apart from software not supporting a 64 bit file system and apart from router resetting itself every time I try to access it. It does looks smart. I will be taking this one back tomm. and looking for something that will work right out of the box. I have used other routers without as many problems as this one. There is no paper instructions in the box which makes it very hard to set up if you can not install the needed software. There was not indication on the box that 64 bit was not surported"

What's great about it: Price What's not so great: Everything else
"I recently upgraded from DSL to Broadband and needed a router. I called Best Buy and they recommended this NetGear router. First, you cannot use the set-up disk with Vista 64bit. I have a laptop which is 32bit, so no problem. The set-up is confusing and LONG. Short of the story is that I got it set up and the range was just horrible. I previously had a 2Wire-g gateway that had far superior range, but wanted to upgrade to N for gaming, etc. The range was AWFUL with the Netgear. Even my iPod Touch was at one bar in the next room.
So, I traded for a Belkin N+ Gigabit, which is essentially the same, $79 and has a USB port where you can put a flash drive to file share. The range is AWESOME. PLUS, the set-up was so easy! Works on Vista 64bit...didn't have to unplug anything from my computer to the router to the modem (which Netgear requires you to).
Don't waste your time or money on this Netgear. I can recommend the Belkin but am also going to try a D-Link just to compare."

What's great about it: nothing!!!!! What's not so great: horrible customer service
"I bought this router and couldn't get it install (on my standard windows machine with comcast service). One of the reasons that I bought it was because the box said 24/7 support. It's not free support. It may be 24/7 but it's paid support. So I call up the 800 number. The automated voice runs me through a bunch of options, advises me that it's paid support, and then gives me another 800 number to call and then auto disconnects. So I hang up and dial yet a 2nd 800 number. That automated voice runs me through a bunch of options, sends a text to my mobile phone and then auto disconnects. Then I get some strange message on my mobile phone about a $9.99/mn charge and the message wants me to type "yes" to agree to it. I'm pretty sure that if a bunch of people sat around a room and trying to figure out a more ridiculous and NOT HELPFULL system of technical support, they would be hard press to come up with something worse than what netgear has in place. At this point, I gave up. The router has never been installed and I will return it tomorrow."

What's great about it: Looks, lights, quality netgear product What's not so great: Nothing so far
"I just purchased this product today and so far so good. Everything connected real well and got up and running without any problems. It's a quality Netgear product and it looks amazing with all the flashing lights and whatnot. I would have liked to see something so nice cased in a metal housing rather than cheap plastic but that's how almost everything is made. My one complaint so far is that it's a 'gigabit' wired router and they make sure you know that as it's plastered all over the box. That being said they've included a cat5 cable, not cat6 which to me doesn't make any sense as that would be a weak link in your 'gigabit' network. Other than that i'm happy with the purchase."

What's great about it: Powerful signal What's not so great: Management interface is flaky
"I bought this router because reviews I had read indicate it has excellent range, and our existing D-Link Extreme-N 655 range is not good enough for whole house coverage. I wanted to install the Netgear downstairs, connect wirelessly to the D-Link for its network connection, and have it provide the wireless signal for our downstairs PCs. When I configured the repeater function and rebooted, I could not connect to the router wirelessly or even through a direct wired connection - I could no longer manage the device at all. I pushed the router's recessed button that resets it to factory settings, and read the documentation more closely. The repeater function only works with other Netgear routers - you configure one as the base station and up to 4 others as repeaters.
As disappointed as I was, I changed strategy and just replaced my existing D-Link with the Netgear. It was a struggle to configure - as others have noted every little change causes a router reboot. A few times I could not login to the management interface over my wired connection after this reboot, but switching my target from http://www.routerlogin.com to http://192.168.1.1 got around that. It seemed to lose the connection to the cable modem quite often, so I had to reboot that a few times as well. The D-Link defaults to 192.168.0.x but the Netgear defaults to 192.168.1.x, and that little change in network ID has caused some config problems in other devices: I had to reconfigure the Linksys wireless bridge that we use for our Blue-ray player, and redefine profiles in both our laptops.
Now that it's configured and active, it seems to be working well. Its signal is stronger than the D-Link, but not a whole lot stronger. The gigabit ports were a MUST for me, and they work well enough. I don't need dual band (at least not yet), and at a sale price of $99 it was a good value."
